Booting HP DV9000 from 2nd SATA HDD

I have an HP DV9000 with Windows 7. I cloned the original boot drive onto a 1 TB Hitachi and, after hours of hacking and frustration (Documented on another post), it now boots and runs fine. I then installed the original (bootable) 250GB HDD into bay 2 and it works fine--as a second data drive.
Now I want to be able to boot off of it (dual-boot). All of the various "Change Boot Order" options on the ESC and Function keys and in Setup allow one to change the order by *device-type* (CD, USB, SATA, NET), but not by specific device *number*. Therefore, I can choose "SATA Drive" as the primary boot device, and it defaults to Drive O (first internal SATA). There is no option I can find to boot to drive 1 (2nd internal SATA). I can put thatsame drive into an external USB adapter and it boot fine--just not as the 2nd internal.
Anyone have a soution????
This question was solved.

No you have figured out the second bay is not bootable. The second bay is just for storage. It is actually a usb connection and is not a true SATA interface.

Here´s my problem.
I bought a SATA-Ultrabay-Adaptor to use it for a second HDD in the Ultrabay-Slot.
I bought the red marked SATA (see above) and put it in the left Bay. Therefor the Floppy-Drive had to go. But the A31 didn´t start - "Operating System not found".
I swapped the CD-Drive with the SATA-HDD-Adaptor. Now the laptop starts the way he should, but performance on the SATA-HDD is very poor. Only UDMA2.
I updated the BIOS and the Embedded-Controller but the problem still exists.
IDE Controller: Intel(R) 82801CAM Ultra ATA-Speichercontroller-248A

Why wont the laptop start when the HDD is in the left Bay-Slot?
2.
Is there any chance of getting the HDD working with better performance? It could run in UDMA6-Mode.
Regards,

Hi, Nycto.
Thanks for your reply.
Yes. It is a SATA Adapter.
This one on EBAY (Germany): SATA-HDD-Adapter
The Hard-Drive is the Hitachi
This one: SATA HardDrive
The Infos about my system came from "Everest Home Edition".
I too recognized that the SATA is identified as an IDE-HDD. But I thought that this is ok cuz the Adapter is SATA -> IDE.
Jumper
The boot-HDD (PATA) is jumpered as master.
The SATA doesnt have any jumpers or pins where i maybe could put a jumper onto.
Another SATA
I would have tested another SATA, if i would have had one in hands. But i haven´t.
Broken Adapter
Thats what I thought first too. Thats why I bought a second one (see above) from another distributor.
But the problems remains the same.
BIOS-Settings
Boot-HDD is the built in PATA.
I excluded all other shown Devices in the Boot-Menu with the "!".
Another strange thing I found out today.
In the Device Manager the Hitachi SATA is shown as Device 0 at the Secondary IDE-Channel.
But I also have "Tune Up Utilities" for doing some other kind of things.
There ( under System Information -> Drives" the Hitachi SATA is shown as Slave Drive on the Primary IDE-Channel.
Now what the heck is going on there?
Is it possible to attach some pictures to my postings?
I haven´t got a webspace where I can host some images.

• Boot MEGA 180 from PCI Sata card

My onboard IDE controller has given up the ghost so I have purchased a PCI sata card to use a spare sata disk, the problem is I can't see any way to get the 180 to boot from the PCI card. Anyone any ideas?

Yep - I disabled the PATA ports.
No - the card has no bios - I guess this is the problem.

• Can I boot a Windows OS on my iMac from an external HDD?

I have two hard disk drives:
One is inside of my 2009 iMac, running leopard. Also on my internal drive is a Windows OS partition, currently running windows 7. One is a WD 1TB external HDD, which I boot Mountain Lion off of. The thing is, I'm running out of room on my internal hard disk drive. Since it is entirely possible to boot Mountain Lion from my external HDD, would it be a good bet that I can make my iMac do the same for a Windows OS? Or is this not the case?

Microsoft does not allow a installation of any version of Windows on an EHD. This is not an OS X or iMac issue,it's strictly with MS Windows.
However, some people have developed hacks to make installing Windows on an EHD possible, the keyword is hacks so you are left on your own to find out how to do it and support it.
Sorry for the discouraging news but unfortunately that's how it is.
As a work around I'd recommend moving large libraries to another EHD, examples of large libraries are iTunes, iMovie & iPhoto. Apple provides instructions on how to do this, you can find them at:
iTunes: How to move the library to an EHD
iMovie: How to move the Library to an EHD
iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
If you make these moves then you can do a standard installation of Windows on your iMac using either Boot Camp or virtualization software such as Parallels or Fusion.

• Can I boot from a SATA drive? What if it's RAID?

I'm planning on getting the MSI 875P Neo FIS2R 800FSB motherboard. I'm also planning on getting ONE SATA hard drive. Can I boot from the SATA drive? Do I HAVE to set up it as a RAID drive? Can you boot from RAID drives? RAID and SATA confuse me a little. Anyone care to help?

I'm using the MSI 865PE Neo2 board and I'm having this problem. It probably has an easy solution, but this is my first build, so I'm not sure exactly what to do.
MSI 865PE Neo 2 Mobo
2.4b P4
Seagate SATA 80GB HDD
Panasonic FDD
Lite-On DVDROM
It took me a little bit of experimenting, but I got the BIOS to recogonize the DVD & HDD. It seems every time I got it to recognize one, the other disappeared. Anyway, like I said, BIOS recognizes all 3 now.
I go to install XP and it says I need to install the drivers from a floppy (after I had previously hit F6). Well, where do I get the drivers? I have a CDROM that came with the mobo but I don't know where to find the drivers for the SATA controller on it. ???
Can someone help me by directing me to a download and/or the file names that I need to transfer to floppy for Win XP installation? I would appreciate it. Thanks.

• Trouble booting from USB/Sata

I have a T430s, and put a different drive in it to run Linux. After connecting the previous drive to a SATA-USB connector, I tried booting from the external (Windows) disk, but am not getting anywhere. I moved that drive (recognized in the BIOS utility) to the top of the list, but when I start I get a message to "remove disk" and start again, as if it's trying to boot from a non-bootable CD.
Any ideas? I need to run native Windows periodically but hate having to keep swapping out the drives. This should work, right?
Solved!

Windows won't run through USB port by default. You'll need some fiddling to get it to work.

• Qosmio G30: Booting from external ESATA HDD

Dear All,
I'm trying to boot from an external HDD connected with a express/34 card that has an BOOT feature. It works like a charm on a other manufacturers notebook because the express/34 card is recognized without problems. I can choose the external sata HDD as bootdevice.
My Qosmio G30 BIOS (V3.5) seems not having this option. Any suggestions? Thank you for feedback!

Such boot options depending from the BIOS.
The BIOS which is installed on the G30 does not provide such option. So unfortunately, but there is nothing to do!

from the little information you posted i cant se you got the exact same problem.
it sounds like you have the wrong boot order set.
must set scsi to get it to always boot from a sata drive.
his problem is the computer does not recognize a harddrive is there

• K9A2 CF Sata HDD BOOT Problem

Hello all.
Got this nice MB yesterday, and everything got running without problem.
Today, a few hours back, my computer shut itself down, and after that
it wont boot with ANY Sata HDD. The computer boots up, you get a 1-2 second
glimpse at the BIOS data, then the computer shuts down.
I don't have any problem with my sata burner. With that my computer boots up OK.
I have tried to flash the BIOS from 1.2 to 1.6, and still the same problem.
Beside the Sata HDD trouble, everything else is working flawlessly.

• Can't boot windoze from extra sata ports in MacPro?

I recently bought a 5th HD for my Mac Pro planning to mount the drive under the optical drive and take advantage of the 2 extra sata ports on the mobo. Because my Vista drive was the only one with the old style power connector ( and I have no adapter ), I thought I'd put it up there and the new drive in the sled. Long story short, the Vista HD mounts when I boot into my Mac OS(s), but it won't boot into Vista..
Is this a known limitation of bootcamp/windoze/MacPro? Will a SnowLeopard OS drive boot from that sata port or is it only going to be useful for data drives? Any other limitations of those 2 extra ports?
Sorry if this has been answered before, I couldn't seem to form a useful query..
TIA

Hi flommer,
by default Windows or better said the Apple BootCamp Drivers for Windows can not see or use the odd SATA ports.
Have a look here http://osx86.net/archive/index.php/t-3159.html for possible solutions to that.
Hope it helps

• How can I boot from an external HDD that has an OS install on it?

Hello,
I have Windows 8.1 installed on my 500GB LaCie external HDD and I am trying to boot my mac from it. I haven't had any success. Thus far, I am able to get to the Startup Menu from holding the option key and Windows does show up. However, when I try to boot it, it says "No Bootable Device Found."
Keep in mind, the hard drive has Windows 8.1 installed on it. It is not a drive to install Windows through Boot Camp.
Any help would be much appreciated.

• Satellite U400-15E - Can't boot from new USB HDD

Hello.
Recently a bought an external WD My Book with 3TeraByte to use with my Satellite U400-15E. I can use it inside Windows 7 Ultimate with no problem. But if I try to boot from it (by pressing F12 key), the BIOS doesn't even see the drive.
Is this because Toshiba doesn't use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)? UEFI BIOS can overcome the 2.19TB limitation in todays computers easily, like the following Western Digital document explains:
This would allow me to use my new external drive to store a Ghost image of my Toshiba's internal HDD for instance. I mean 3TB and even greater capacities are a reality today. When will Toshiba update their BIOSes to support UEFI?
Equipment used:
Toshiba Satellite U400-15E (BIOS v5.00 26-10-2010)
Western Digital My Book Essential 3TeraByte - Firmware v1.014 (USB 3.0 interface)
MS Windows 7 Ultimate - 32bit version
Thank you

Hello
Well... with this same computer, I already tried booting (successfully) from the following pendrive capacities:
8GB
16GB
32GB
All without problem.
And besides, before having the 3TeraByte WD, I had a 1TeraByte Iomega USB HDD from which I could store Ghost images, because the BIOS would show the 1TB Iomega drive after pressing F12 and Symantec Ghost could also detect the drive without problems.
But with this new 3TeraByte WD... the BIOS doesn't even show the drive after pressing F12.
So when you say +{color:#0000ff}So USB HDDs are not supported{color}+ are you refering booting from USB HDD?
Hum... I'm not sure about that.
I never tried booting an OS from the Iomega.
But that was never my purpose either.
My purpose is for the BIOS (and hopefully Symantec Ghost) to detect the WD USB drive, like it happened before with the 1TeraByte Iomega.
I was using a 1TeraByte Iomega "Select Series" drive.
With the Iomega I could create Ghost images of my Toshiba without a problem.
+{color:#0000ff}But you’re absolutely right: 3TB and greater capacities are reality today but Satellite U400 is older notebook model and not newest one.{color}+
A Laptop computer that has Two 64bit CPU cores and 8GB RAM capacity is not that old!
I think it could be a BIOS limitation, since it's not using UEFI.
Any more ideas?
Thank you.

• Boot from external USB HDD - Tecra M5

Hi!
Does anyone know is it possible to boot OS from external HDD connected to notebook via USB-port? There is "HDD priority" in BIOS setup with an ability to choose: USB - Built-in - Second HDD. But it doesn't work :(
I tried to boot Windows 98 from the same external USB-HDD on my home computer. Everything is OK...
The version of my Tecra M5 BIOS is 3.20.
TIA

Hi
You can boot from the second HDD if this HDD was placed in the SelectBay but not if the HDD was connected to the USB port.
Only this devices are bootable:
USB FDD, Primary HDD, SelectBay devices, Network(LAN), SD-CARD
