BOOTMGR is compressed - no CD drive - Roxio BackOnTrack link is broken - now what?

My friend here was using a HP Mini 110-1016LA with Windows XP and decided to compress the C: drive to save space.  This compressed an essential file and when she turned it back on got this error message:
BOOTMGR is compressed
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart
I did online research to try to figure out how to solve this problem.  I found lots of information (in Spanish) here:
http://www.odomera.com/2009/07/auxilio-me-sale-bootmgr-is-compressed.html
Basically you're supposed to insert the Windows installation discs to recover the compressed BOOTMGR file, but since the computer does not have any CD drive and didn't come with discs anyway, it has to be done from a USB.
Here is what I came up with:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02510149&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_US...
In that link HP provides a solution, but it is dependent on being able to download a program from Roxio.  They provide a link, but that link doesn't work.  I searched some and found another link, but it didn't work either.
The first blog provided a solution that works if you have Vista or Windows 7: http://www.odomera.com/2011/01/disco-inicio-usb-vista-y-7.html
But this is XP so no luck.
Microsoft provides a download for floppy (!) but I suspect it wouldn't be useful:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=18804
And... this link looks promising, but the browser freezes when I try to play the video, so I'm a bit nervous about just downloading from the link provided and running it on my computer.
http://tuts4tech.net/2009/07/14/creating-a-usb-bootable-xp-recovery-console/
Can you help me here?  I'm computer-literate but not an expert.  Maybe you didn't need me to provide all the links but I figured it couldn't hurt to let you know what I've already tried.
Thank you ever so much.

HI,
I just checked the link and it does work.
It brings you to a registration page. You will need to register and then you can access the download
There is no cost.

The download is large, 146mb

  • Just installed a new 1tb sata drive into an old g5. Now what is the best practice to use it?

    Hey all
My old g5s memory was full so installed a new internal drive.  I have so far partitioned and named it so it is on the desktop because I saw that in a youtube vid. I'm wondering if that was the best thing to do to use it and if so how should I go about using it since my other drive is full and much smaller at 80gb.
    Thanks for any help =]

Best way to get an exact bootable copy of your old drive to the new one is with Carbon Copy Cloner...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    Or SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Then boot from the new bigger HDD by setting it in System Preferences>Startup Disk.
BTW, what size Partitions did you use? OSX loves lots & lots of free Space.

  • ML failed Hard drive failure - restored TM to External, Now what?

If I'm reposting, please point me to a thread, I'll try it. Just didn't see exactly what I thought I need, and I'm new to the Mac beyond just using it.
Tried to install ML on an iMac 2008 running Lion. It failed saying the hard drive failed. It took several restarts, but finally got to where I could do a restore from time machine - which is what I thought I wanted to do. But because the internal drive is "marked" to have failed, I could only restore to an external. I am now running from that 2TB external. I ran DU to try to check the internal. Even during the install, DU said the disk was fine. After the restore there was once that Verify Disk failed, Repair Disk seemed to have worked, but still didn't dare trying to reinstall ML or boot from it. I erased it, hoping to get the OS and all my data from the external to the internal.
Can I just copy it? What is my next step?
    Thanks,
    Rick

Sounds like the drive has failed or is failing. You'll probably need to replace it.
You can try to clone the system back after erasing the drive with SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner

  • BOOTMGR is compressed in my macbookair bootcamp partition!

I somehow managed to compress the hardrive and when I went into bootcamp the screen turned black and says "BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart". Unfortunately whenever I press ctrl+alt+delete it does restar and remains on the screen. I can't even access my mac partition. Is there any way to fix this?

If it is not giving you access to your mac partion either, there isn't much you can do.
I would try to insert the windows disk into your superdrive/external optical drive, restart, and then use whatever recovery options are available, if nothing happens, I reccommend taking to a technitian who works with windows pc's and macs

  • I unistalled roxio backontrack from my hp mini, thinking I didn't need it, and now it won't start.

I have a HP mini 110. I've had it for a couple of years and it started saying that I didn't have enough disk space, so I went to the Add/Remove programs and started deleting stuff I had downloaded and didn't need (not important things, just stuff like games). Then I came across Roxio Backontrack. It was taking up a lot of room and it said that I rarely used it and the last time I had used it was in 2009 (three years ago), so I googled it and people on the interenet said I didn't need it. So I unistalled it. My computer had to restart, and when starting it again, it wouldn't boot (or start, whatever). It would show the screen where it asked if i wanted to start normally, go through safe mode, or start at the last good configuration. Well, I tried the first two and it would show a whole bunch of white numbers on a black screen, it just sat there forever, I couldn;t click or anything. Then I restarted, clicked on 'last good configuration' and it started loading windows, but stopped and just had a black screen and sat there (it was a black screen that was lit, so it wasn't off, it was just black with no mouse and no movement). It didn't even get to the screen where I typed in my password to open my account. I also tried pushing the f2 and f12 and that didn't do anything either.
So, my question is: What happened to it and what do I do?

I have encountered the same exact problem! I have tried EVERYTHING, including what potent has suggested.
It won't let me do anything. How do I do a factory reset when I can't access any funtions of the HD? When I was searching the internet for answers, it seems many HP Mini 110 owners have encountered the same situation. So I would have to say that it has SOMETHING to do with the Roxio Backontrack???? We can't all have a virus that's causing us all to have the same exact issues, can we?? Unless it has come in something that 's already pre-installed?? Has there been a resolution to this?
I know for a fact that there hasn't been anything downloaded to either of the ones that I purchased, other than Norton 360 internet security.
I bought 2 of these for my grandchildren for Christmas & I gotta say, they have been nothing but trouble from the get go & I really feel that my money was wasted on them. The only thing they have done with them is play games on Nick Jr. & PBS Kids & occasionally watch monster trucks on youtube. They don't get much chance to use them, because EVERY time they turn them on to use them, there's SOME kind of issue with them.
PLEASE help with this issue so that the money spent on this one isn't a TOTAL loss!!

  • What if computer run into "Bootmgr is missing" or "Hard Drive Failure"

Most of us have the experience of computer run into error, such as bootmgr is missing. The most common reasons for BOOTMGR errors include corrupt and misconfigured files, hard drive and operating system upgrade issues, corrupt hard drive sectors, an outdated BIOS, and damaged or loose hard drive interface cables. Hard drive failure is another frequent error,it is arouse by physical damage or logical error. Once this problem occurs to you, any data stores in it would be in danger.  If you want to Fix Bootmgr Error by yourself. These following steps may be available for you to deal with the problem. Step one. Burn a rescue boot disc or USB drive. You need to download Fix Genius and install it  into a computer ,then insert the CD/USB and run the program to burn it . Step two. boot your computer from CD/USB Enter into the BIOS and change the Boot Device Priority ,then save the changes and exit. Step three.Fix "Bootmgr is missing" or "Hard Drive Failure" Insert the CD/USB then you will enter into the WinPE system, and click the Fix Genius icon there on the desktop. After run up the program, config the parameter according to your problem. This rescuing process would last within minutes. It is the best one I can find among the solutions. As the time past, it is a time information refresh very quickly, Maybe there is a better one for you to fix bootmgr is corrupted and Hard drive failure if you have time to search online. please let me know if you find it, I will be glad with you.

There are some caveats to be aware of when replacing the hard drive! While in theory any SATA drive is compatible, I have experienced problems with a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB and a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640GB recently.
With my WD drive I have had to adjust the power management settings (using a command line tool called "hdapm") to prevent it from spinning up and down every 20 to 30 seconds, and which was also leading to momentary freeze ups. While this may kill my battery a bit quicker, I'm hoping the drive will at least live an average lifetime. (Batteries may be more expensive, but they're a lot quicker to replace than a hard drive).
My Seagate drive has exhibited far less frequent problems but the occasional noises it made have never sounded healthy and after 6 months is now being replaced under warranty. There were also a number of days where I would get excessive beachballing for no reason I could identify, and that I concluded must be hard disk related. I couldn't find anything here or elsewhere on the internet to indicate what the cause of that might be.
So my limited experience of hard disk replacement hasn't been a great success and I'm beginning to wonder if getting an official replacement from Apple might be a safer option in the long run, despite it being more expensive. I read somewhere that the hard disks supplied by Apple have custom firmware that works better with Apple's own power management strategies.

  • HP Mini 110 recover with Roxio Backontrack

Hello, how long does it take for Roxio BackOnTrack to recover the default image for an HP Mini 110? It's been almost two hours and and still says Please wait until the process is complete. Is this normal?
    Thanks

    Hi DeniseLTF,
I understand your computer has been doing a system restore not for 9 hours. I would turn off  the computer as it is having issues. Here is a document if System Restore fails to create a restore point or fails to restore.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can't doing anything abouty this, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • I've replaced my optical drive with an SSD drive, now what?

So now I have a formatted 60GB SSD inside my iMac in the optical drive space, alongside my existing 1.5TB spinning drive which holds the Lion OS.
What would be the best way to proceed? Should I . . .
Load up the Lion thumbdrive and install Lion on the SSD (ignoring for now the Lion OS on the 1.5TB drive) and then import all settings from the old drive to the new one?
I want all system and all applications to be loaded on the SSD drive and the remaining space I plan to use for editing purposes, such as movies, photos etc. Load them onto the fast drive for editing then off onto the spinning drive for archiving and later re-editing and use.
So once I have a new OS installed on the new drive, what do I delete off of the old drive to get rid of the operating system there without losing any data?
Just the System folder or the System and Library folders? What about the User folder? It's huge obviously, so I clearly can't bring that in, but are there parts of it that should be on the SSD?
I'm also running Parallels, so should I drag _that_ applications folder over as well, _out_ of the Users folder? How about the Virtual Machines, the Windows.PVM and Linux.Pvm virtual machines?
Instead of installing Lion, maybe I should drag the appropriate folders over?
I'm sure it's going to be a mix of these, but not sure what the optimal mix is.
    Thanks,.

I opened my iPhoto library today which was stored on an external hard drive and several of my videos now will not play at all. The weird thing is that each file shows a duration of 1 second and when I open them it just shows one frame. What the !&%$#@ Where did my original video files go?

Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back up both of them (time machine)  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010)
What option has the faster GB/s?

Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.
WD RED models are designed for RAID and NAS and 7.2k instead of your more standard slower green 5400 rpm green models while still costing less than WD Blacks.

  • Hi, I had to re install my itunes library from a hard drive to my new laptop. Now I cant sync my iphone because itunes thinks all songs are new and basically doubling all albums. Should i restore iphone or is there a better way?

hi, i had to re install my itunes library from a hard drive to my new laptop. Now itunes thinks i am trying to add new albums and saying there isnt enoug space. should i restore or is there a better way.

Have you tried exporting a 10 second section of the footage to see if the issue shows up once the seqeunce is actually exported from the timeline. I edit on CS5 with windows 7 pro at work quite often and have no issues so I assure you that isn't the issue. I also edit with AVCHD footage when at home and work quite freqeuntly as well so I'm positive that isn't the issue. It sounds like a GPU driver has been corrupted in the way it interacts with premiere pro. What type of GPU do you have? If it supports MPE's GPU acceleration have you tried turning it off and seeing if that makes any difference?
Anyways though try to export a 10 second test section of your timeline to see if when the clip is exported from premiere it will play normally in windows media player or vlc or w/e media player you want to use. If it exports fine then you can almost be positive it's a corrupted video card driver. If that's the case I'd re-install your GPU's driver and also check your gpu makers website to see if they have a updated driver avaiable.
