Both iPhoto & iTunes library lost/corrupted within two week of another..

So about two weeks ago, I opened iPhoto and all my pics were gone. Turns out that all my pics were still in there, but somehow the index file was damaged (?) so I've been dragging them all out into a new library slowly since I didn't trust my last backup. Today, I opened iTunes, and it started importing my iTunes library and after a while said it was not a valid library, relabeled it 'damaged' and so on. What could be up? I just replaced my hard drive 2 months ago. Any ideas?

These problems could be related, or maybe not.
Iphoto will have a damaged database if the app is interrupted while writing to the DB. This can be caused by a crash, a force quit. It can happen if the disk is formatted in any way except Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Or, it could indicate disk damage.

Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store? When I try it tells me the pruchases have already been downloaded to this computer.

Does your purchased rmusic appears under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) ? If they do and you don't have the cloud symbol against them so as to re-download them, then do you still have the entries for them in your library i.e. where you would normally click on them to play them ? If you do then try deleting them from there (iTunes will be seeing them and assuming that you still have them somewhere) and they should then get the cloud symbol for re-downloading in the Purchased link.
If you aren't in a country where music can be re-downloaded then you could try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page,

My itunes will not open at all - I repeatedly get the message"itunes library is corrupted...not installed correctly...please reinstall itunes" I have tried opening all my itunes folders but nothing will even open.

Let's try a repair install of iTunes first.
Restart the PC. If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair". If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", click "Change" and then click "Repair".
Can you launch your iTunes now?

  • ITunes Library.itl corrupt

iTunes Library.itl corrupt. This is what i get when i open my itunes from this afternoon. i have instaled and removed and reinstatled itunes at least 3-4 times and still happens and also have run a chkdsk check more than once and it still comes up. can any one help thanks you

If deleting the files will help you out, and Windows is not letting you delete the files because they are corrupt, try Move on Boot. This little program has helped me out of a couple of jams. It's free and on Cnet:

I'm not sure if this will help, but might be worth a try.

  • Accidently deleted both my itunes library files

I accidently deleted both my itunes library files and because I restored them back from my recycle bin I seem to have managed to overwrite them with empty files, I still have all my music files that i can import back in to my itunes but how do i get my playlists back? The only place they are stored is on my ipod. I have never been able to do a backup becuse you have to do one to disk and don't seem to have the option to back up to a hard drive and since havn't found any disks that store 160gb i haven't ever been able to backup itunes.  I have a portable hard drive and have all my music backed up to it but not a backup that contains the playlists, does anyone know how to get them back

Each time you restart iTunes it assumes that all the tracks are where it thinks they are. The exclamation marks only show up if iTunes attempts to do something with the files and cannot find them.
Possible causes are that you or some third party tool like WIndows Media Player have moved, renamed or deleted the files, or that the drive they live on has changed drive letters. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you might be able to reconnect iTunes to them using my FindTracks script. To start with test it out on a handful of tracks that show up as missing in action. If it can find & repair the links to those throw larger selections at it until everything is connected.

  • Both disc drives broke within two weeks of each other?

I bought an imac and macbook pro about a year and a half ago and within two weeks of each other, both have broken. They have always been awkward to insert/eject disc to/from, but now they either don't accept discs in or wont spit them out. Surely this isn't coincidence as they get very different usage from each other. Also, i've just upgraded to 10.6.8. Is this a known problem? Can i request Apple fix these issues for free, as i don't really feel one and a half years is acceptable for the breakdown of both machines, especially as they get very little usage.
    Advice?

  • I transferred my iTunes library from one external hard drive to another and added more music on the same day. How do I get rid of my duplicate files without going through them one by one which would take forever?

Please help. I have transferred my iTunes library from one external hard drive to another plus added additional music now I have duplicates of the same music in many albums. How do I delete the duplicates without going through them one by one which would take forever? I understand how to get the "show exact duplicate" feature up on iTunes but, because they were added to the library on the exact day I can't seperate them I'm that manner. So each duplicate is right next to eachother in the exact duplicate screen.

My DeDuper script is designed to help clean up. See this thread for background.

How can I transfer my iTunes library and playlists from one computer to another?

Copy the iTunes folder (Mac: Home\Music or PC: My Music) to the same location on the new computer. If an iTunes folder already exists on the new computer (it will on a Mac) replace it with one you copied.

  • IPhoto 11 Library was corrupted and photobook is lost

Hi there, I have encountered various issues with my iphoto. I have attempted to resolve it and I believe I have created a bigger mess.
    Problems:
    1. many photos in "events" and "photobook" when clicked did not connect to photo for editing, it simply showed a large black screen with the warning symbol (I believe this was caused by my own mistake of moving around photos in the iphoto library when I went to "reveal in finder" . My lesson learned: do not move photos in iphoto library!)
    2. I attempted to remedy this problem by following the instructions I found on various posts here. I have downloaded the iPhoto manager, created a new library etc. However, after many unsuccessful attempts, I have simply restored my iPhoto to a backup from Jan. The problem now is that this is just prior to my installing iPhoto 11. So the photobook, I has spent hours on is now lost.
    3. I have attempted to go to a newer version of the backup from TM. But I think I am also encountering a full startup disk. (as I only now have 10.65GB available).
    Possible Solutions?
I have a 2TB external hard drive and a 1TB drive for my TM. I am considering moving TM to the larger drive and then moving iPhoto to the 1TB drive. However, before I get myself into any more messes, I am seeking your advice.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
But I think I am also encountering a full startup disk. (as I only now have 10.65GB available).
This is a major issue. OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on. Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially. Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do. Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
    To move the iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • One computer - windowsxp - two ipods. Can both share itunes library?

I have a 5th gen ipod with 3300 tracks loaded. My wife has now bought a second hand 4th gen with click wheel which I would like to share with my itunes library.
Problem is - can this be done and if so how do I go about it?
Was about to restore the 4th gen ipod but I am terrified that this will corrupt my current set up in some way. This is the last thing I want to do.
Can someone please give me an idiots guide to the steps that I will need to take to getting the two ipods linked to the same library.

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing Your Songs Manually

  • ITunes library file corrupt PLEASE HELP

My sister and I both got new iPods for Christmas. I had an extensive library, while she was brand new and I just added songs to hers. We have Windows XP and I figured since we have different screens, we'd have different iTunes. I just updated hers and went to open my iTunes. What opened was a blank screen and the message "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Kaitlyn\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT TO DO AND I AM HYSTERICAL. If someone could PLEASE answer me, you would save my Christmas. Thank you.

This is an image of what my iTunes looks like right now. If I follow the instructions on the website, everything will come back? I mean, I had SO MANY songs a few hours ago and now it looks like this...

I'm sorry I'm asking so many questions. It's just that I am so nervous about losing everything. Also, on that site, it doesn't say that it's a corrupt .itl file... will it still work?

  • Restoring iTunes Library from corrupted external hard drive

I had my iTunes library and all the associated files on an external hard drive.  This was working fine until I plugged this external hard drive into my TV to watch a movie.  When I plugged my external hard drive back into my Macbook it is no longer readable, the file structure was corrupted and it will not mount.
I got a program to recover the files and this seemed to work.  It was able to recover all the files however not the same file structure or file names etc.  Just the files.  So now I have all my files back but they are all sequentially named and stored in folders based on file type i.e. not the same folder structure or location as before.  One good thing though is that I have found the itunes library files in all the mess.
Does anyone know how I would go about restoring my itunes library with this?  I have the library files and all the audio/video files but they are not in the same location nor do they have the same names or folder structure.  Basically before they were organized by iTunes in folders by Artist and now they are in folders by file type (eg mp3, avi, mp4 etc).  Is it possible to restore it all?  Could I just import all the songs back into itunes and then somehow restore the library file to get all my ratings and playlists back?
    Or did I lose everything?

I have also found a couple of itunes library files that were recovered from the corrupted hard drive.  I have about 5 previous library files and I also have two .xml library files.  Would there be a way to somehow salvage my ratings etc from these files?  Can i restore the library from these?  Everytime i start itunes and try to select one of them it just says that the library files appear to be damaged and creates new ones.

  • I need to rename my itunes library, as I have two libraries on 2 different Mac's with the same name.  Can this be done?

Hi, I have an iMac in one room and a Mac Mini in another.  Each is set up independantly and I unfortunately gave the same iTunes Library name to both libraries, which is now making it impossible for me to use my iPhone as a remote to both libraries.  I prefer to have 2 different libraries.
Can I rename one library and if so, how?
    Cheers

You can change the name from iTunes preferences.
If you choose to share your entire library, its name appears in the iTunes window (below Shared) on other local computers set up to look for shared libraries. To change the name others see, choose iTunes > Preferences, click General, and type a new name in the Library Name field.
From iTunes 10 for Mac: Share your iTunes library
