Both itunes and quicktime just stopped running

Just recently, my itunes just stopped working. At first it was perfectly fine, then it couldn't read anything from my ipod, then it just wouldn't start up. I kept receiving a message "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration". So I went first to the itune discussion forum to try and reset the audio, but there was no quicktime audio tab. so I tried to run quicktime and i recieved this message " Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Quicktime\QuicktimePlayer.exe
This application had requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please Contact the application's support team for more information.

I kept receiving a message "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration"
Okay. That one is most commonly caused by a problem with your QuickTime. (iTunes uses QuickTime for audio and video playback.) So that's consistent with the error that you're getting when you try to launch QuickTime.
So let's try swapping out your QuickTime, as per the following document:
iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes has detected an audio configuration problem

Before trying the update again, use Microsoft's Fix it solution at http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall. Use it to uninstall iTunes and Quicktime. It bypasses this not uncommon problem. When the solution finishes, the selected program will be uninstalled. It can take several minutes and I have seen as much as half an hour.
After iTunes & Quicktime are uninstalled, try the update again.

Is your iPhone connected to your computer using the lightning cable or are you doing WiFi sync?
Sometimes the iPhone doesn't show up in the side bar if you're using WiFi syncing, if its not working, then be connected to your WiFi on your phone and on your computer (Same network) let me know how it's going, if it doesn't work still. Turn your phone off and on again and put in your pass code then try to sync it (keep your phone unlocked and not in sleep mode) tel me if it appears in the side bar.

  • ITunes and Quicktime won't run

I had itunes and QT working fine when I bought my Ipod. I bought my son a Nano and that is when everything went bad. I have tried everything the apple website has to offer. I am at the point where I was able to download and install the latest version of itunes and QT from the Apple website. I installed each separately. They seemed to install fine. When I click on either of them they open for a second and then close with no error message. I am using Windows XP Home. I have an old version of Norton 2002 on the computer that is no longer operable. I tried unistalling it, and that disables by ISP login. Needless to say I have issues. Can anyone help, because Apple and Microsoft sure won't. Thanks,

    hi dukefafl!
hmmm. if both itunes and QT are failing to open when you try to launch them (with no error messages whatsoever), the first thing i worry about is infestation of the PC by Qoologic adware. (usually with that, people will see a brief "flash" of an itunes license screen when they try to open itunes ... but the symptom isn't universal.)
the free trial version of Ewido has been been cleaning that up for most people:
    ewido anti-malware download
if no joy with that, we'll try checking through a few of the rarer causes of the "error message free" launch failures. (Your Norton is unlikely to be the culprit in this case ... the error message free launch failure associated with that typically only hits people with NIS 2005.)

  • Both ITunes and Quicktime will not open

I can't open either ITunes or Quicktime. Each time, I get the iTunes or QuickTime Player "has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I tried repairing both, was able to uninstall & reinstall iTunes but still get same error. Quicktime would not uninstall, removed it through Windows Install Clean Up, cannot re-install.
    Here are the errors:
    AppName: itunes.exe AppVer: 7.6.2.9 ModName: quicktimestreamingauthoring.qtx
    ModVer: 7.4.5.67 Offset: 0001685c
    EventType : BEX P1 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P2 : 7.4.5.67 P3 : 47edaedf

    P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000
And the one during the Quicktime install:
    Error writing to file: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTimeStreaming.Resources\ QuickTimeStreaming.Resources.qtr
Verify if you have access to that directory
Please help! I am pulling my hair out!

I wish I had an answer for you; all I can say is, you're not alone. I've been unable to open iTunes (7.6.2) all day, and after reading your post, I tried QuickTime: yep, it only crashes, just like iTunes. FWIW, here's what I tried: restart, repair disk permissions, CD start, using Time Machine to restore iTunes 7.6.1 (now I have both that and 7.6.2, but neither works), calling Apple tech support (they want $49 to see if they can come up with something else).
Also FWIW, this problem started this morning; last night, I upgraded Safari (3.1.1). I don't know why there'd be a connection, but...?

  • HT1657 what do i do if i rented a movie on itunes and it just stopped in the middle?

i just rented a movie in itunes, and it stopped at 1:37. is there anything i can do to fix that?

Try quitting and restarting iTunes, and if that doesn't help restart your computer. If the movie still fails, go here:
    iTunes Support
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.

  • Error opening both iTunes and Quicktime

Hey I'm having trouble opening iTunes, everytime I get the "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." window. And while opening Quicktime I recieve Error #63441 prompting me to check as to whether or not Quicktime is properly installed or not. Might I add that I have installed the standalone player nad still receive this message.
Furthermore, neither application shows up on my Add/Remove Programs list. Obviously I am now at a lost, if anyone could help me that would be more than fantastic.

    hi Sandy!
After downloading the standalone Quicktime installer and saving and running it, I received error 1722 - 'There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support ....'
hmmm. the 1722 isn't tremendously common. but in general low-1700-range errors seem to be associated with problems or interference with the Windows Installer on a PC. so we'll focus on that angle for a while.
first let's do some spring cleaning and maintenance.
download fresh definitions and run vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer "online" scans, run those as well. Then do a disk cleanup, run your favorite disk checking/repair utility, and do a disk defrag. reboot.
if that doesn't show anything up, head to Windows Update and make sure you're up-to-date in that regard. (we're trying to ensure here that you have Windows Installer 3.1v2 on your PC ... there were a few unusual problems on some PCs with 3.1v1.)
if that seems in order, try method 1 from this document (usually a better bet with a 1607, but worth a try with the low-1700s too):
How to resolve Common "Windows Installer" Problems
if no joy yet, let's try making sure that all background applications are switched off prior to the installs (just in case there's something else apart from just security software interfering with the install):
Close Applications Running in the Background
... and failing that, we throw the rest of the InstallShield Tips and Pointers at the beast (they can be of some help with the less-well-documented and/or recalcitrant errors):

  • Both itunes and quicktime wont open!

so its been a few days and my itunes has not opened.
a message keeps popping up that says::
itunes has encountered an needs to close...send//dont send error report.on some topics i read that the problem may be quicktime-related, so i tried opening up my quicktime player. however, that would not open either!
i dont want to uninstall itunes because i dont want to lose my music, and im afraid to uninstall quicktime because i dont know if i have the program to reinstall it later on.
    someone help!
    thankss,
    ashley.

    hi ashlay!
here's how to do a careful standalone reinstall of QuickTime:
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

  • My Itunes will not launch. Shows up in processes, tried uninstalling and reinstalling both Itunes and quicktime. Ran CCleaner. Restarted several times.

I've tried everything I can think of to get this to work. It was working. I've tried every solution I could find on other boards.

Solved. Seems to have been an external HDD that has failed. I had some files on it that Itunes was pointed to. Didn't notice the drive had failed. Itunes seems to be working now with the drive off.

  • Installing iTunes and QuickTime on an HP laptop running Windows 7.

    I get error 2738 when:
              installing todays downloads or when
uninstalling a preinstalled 2009 version of QuickTime.
I have seen and successfully applied the solution offerred at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1331.
    Twice.
Restarted the computer and applied that solution again, and again with the message indicating success.
And each time get the error 2738 message.

I also looked through the earlier messages and saw something about
a logon as a simple user.
Did this and then noticed the uninstaller in QuickTime folder.
Used this and QuickTime uninstalled without error (2738 or anything else).
Continued to be logged on as this simple user.
Ran the iTunes installer (answering yes to security questions).
Installed both iTunes and QuickTime without error.

  • Error Messages for iTunes and Quicktime, what do I do?

Hello, I'm in need of some help.
Let me walk you all through what I did for the last 4 hours:
(important note: I suck at far too much computer stuff, so I am fully aware that as you read the following, at certain points I probably made the problem much worse than it needed to be, I am not proud of this, but everything you read did happen, stupid as it probably was for me to pursue the problems in the particular way that I did. Hindsight is 20/20.)
I updated my iTunes v7.7 to v8.0 today, and after trying it out for a while decided that I didn't like it and wanted to go back to what I was using before.
So, because I didn't know what else to do, I tried to re-install the original iTunes software that came with my iPod (a 20gig classic I bought in 2004). That version of iTunes was v6.0 (again, 3 years ago).
Part way through the installation process, I got a message that said that, because I had a newer version of iTunes on the computer already, it wouldn't install the version on the disk.
So I uninstalled v8.0, restarted my computer, and installed the v6.0 from the CD-ROM I had.
It was then that I found I had NONE of the 6000+ songs in my iTunes window. I checked my computers files to find that they were still in the library, but my iTunes screen was completely devoid of all my music.
So I tried to get it all back on the player. I discovered that by right-clicking "Play" for the individual files from the folders in my iTunes that they would come up on the player, but that meant that I'd be clicking in 6000+ songs, one by one, till they were all back. I didn't want to do that.
So I tried a system restore (again, read "important note" at top of post). After that happened and I was looking at my desktop again, tried opening iTunes, and it gave me a message that said:
"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
And it asks if I wanna send an error report. I decline, then try opening Quicktime. Same message. So I try to uninstall both programs (i know, i know, "important note"), and iTunes uninstalls, Quicktime does not, because, as my computer puts it, "a fatal error occurs."
But since I have iTunes uninstalled, I go to apples site and download iTunes v8.0 again. After waiting for all that to get done, I get the same error message.
So I peruse this very discussion forum, and after looking for a good while at what is being recommended I go to a site and download v7.7 again.
Again, I get the same error message.
So here I am. I've tried working it out myself for the last 4 hours, and I seem to have made things worse.
So please, please, PLEASE, I ask for any help you can provide.
Can I get my iTunes back?
    Is my Quicktime corrupted now?
    Am I totally screwed?

I had the same problem when I went to upgrade to 8 and then downgrade back to 7.7. To fix this is a little involved, but you can do it. Let me put it this way, I talked my mother through it on the phone, and she has a hard time finding the power button So no worries, I'll help you get back up and running. I am running Vista now, so I am going off of memory for Vista, so bear with me.
    I would do the following:
    1. Uninstall both iTunes and Quicktime by going to Control Panel-Add Remove Programs, and choosing first Quicktime then iTunes.
    2. Clean your registry. Easy now, it is not that hard. To do it, go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download and download CCleaner. It is free and has NO spyware. Install it and run the registry cleaner. It will remove any trace of both programs from the registry. Now you have 2 choices.
3a. Now I would install iTunes 8. Because you already installed it once, it converted its database file that it uses to track the library and play lists up to the iTunes 8 standard.
3b. If you have no problem loosing your playlists and library settings, you can go back to iTunes 7.7. To do this, first search for "itunes.ttl". To do this, go to Start-Search Files and Folders- and type in "iTunes.ttl" Once the search finishes, it will tell you where it is located. Navigate there using Windows Explorer or My Computer and delete it. Now you can install iTunes 7.7 with out any errors. You will not loose any files! just your playlists and it will not remember what is in your library.
As far as adding your songs again, did you try to re-importing your music? If you go to the file menu-add folder to library. It will bring up a dialogue box that will allow you to browse to the folder with your music.
Let me know if this works. I will help in anyway I can.
    Good Luck,
    linesma

  • Itunes and Quicktime won't open.

I recently had a problem with Itunes, which deleted anything new I purchased or downloaded. I found out that if I rebuilt the library the problem could be solved, but I didn't want to risk losing any data so I didn't do it. I figured I'd wait for an update that would fix it and a couple days later I downloaded Itunes 7.3.1. The download did not go smoothly at all. During the course of it: it had to stop downloading and download both Itunes and Quicktime seperatly and it kept saying that my Quicktime was not up to date (something it's been saying for the last couple months). I've tried fixing that before, but when I do it prevents me from going into Itunes.
Now after downloading 7.3.1 neither one of the programs will open. Itunes says, "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration." and Quicktime says, "Runtime Error! ... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."
I'm starting to get really annoyed with Itunes, for the last couple months it's had nothing but problems. Can someone please help me.
      Windows XP

    Hi Clyde33.
Itunes says, "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration."
Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
Quicktime says, "Runtime Error! ... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."

  • ITunes and Quicktime will not launch

I cannot get my iTunes or Quicktime to launch. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, upgraded, and tried several fixes that I found on this discussion board. No Luck! I'm using XP Pro SP3. When I first installed iTunes, it worked, but then quit working about 4 weeks later. I'm using the latest versions of both iTunes and Quicktime.

The error message you are getting suggests that you do have one of the problem codec packs installed on your system or you have had in the past.
Quicktime does not install Quicktime.cpl in the system32 directory.
It is possible that one of them was installed without you knowing with other software, I think Storm may get installed with other things although I can't name anything.
You must look for the things on my list and uninstall them if you find them. Check in Add/Remove programs to see if there is an entry there.
When you have uninstalled the problem items go on to the next stage. If you can't find anything you had better go on as well.
Download the stand alone Quicktime (the one without iTunes):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Now Remove Quicktime using the method in this article (just Quicktime):
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
When you come to your C:\Windows\system32\ folder you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart you computer
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check if it starts.
If it does you are in a position to find out if iTunes is OK.

  • ITunes and QuickTime will not work..Yeah, another one

Despite my best efforts to try to solve my problem on my own and not both you kind people, I've been working on and off at trying to get my iTunes working, with no positive results at all. It's honestly been so long, I don't recall what might have sparked the issues, but every time I try to open iTunes or QuickTime they will begin to open but fail, bringing up the common windows error message:
iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
QuickTime Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
So far, I have totally deleted both iTunes and QuickTime twice from my computer- first just through Add/Remove Programs pathways, then more in depth with Registry Crawler to try to remove any traces of the programs- all before re-installing the two programs. Both times have failed, still leaving me unable to open either program, so I've broken down and come here- hoping to find anyone willing to lend a hand to help fix this issue so that I can finally listen to my music the way I used to.

    Perfect information, thanks.
That combination is almost always caused by some application stashing old QuickTime componentry down in your system files. (Codec packs and video converters are the usual suspects, although some Games might do it too.)
Let's go looking for the old stuff.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "system32" folder.
What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file/folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)
