Brand new Manual for Final Cut Pro X

This is a support forum for FCP X so I was wondering if it is allowed post here the information that I just finished a brand new Manual for this program "Final Cut Pro X - How it Works". It is available from my website as a pdf file in 11x8.5 format.
http://DingDingMusic.com/Manuals/
I'm writing "Graphically Enhanced Manuals"  for many years now (mostly for Logic Pro) and applied the same concept to the new FCP X. I thought it is especially helpful with all those changes in FCP X to provide lots of graphics and diagrams to help to understand the fundamental changes under the hood and the new concepts that shocked so many editors.

David,
thanks for the link. I read through it and you are right, It looks like I'm in violation of the Terms of Use.
However, there are a two things that I find interesting.
There is no acknowledgment whatsoever or any "thank you" from Apple to the potential participant for doing Apple's work for FREE, that is - providing appropriate customer support. Many users, including you David, are spending countless hours to help Apple customers.
Not only does Apple take that service for granted, it also prohibits those who help others to list at least their own website, to let people know what the helpful user is doing for his day job. How about if Apple would prohibit the exchange of business cards at their WWDC for all participants or not allowing their speaker to mention their product or business.
This is an "Apple Support Community" where Apple expects free "Support" help from their customers but overlooks the "Community" part. It doesn't have to go all myspace-style, but  you want to get to know the people (especially the helpful and competent ones) and what is wrong to have their website listed in their signature or one line about their new book or video tutorial. As long as it is topic related and not about their sports memorabilia business on eBay.
Letting users know that there is a new book or video or podcast available about the product on the Forum  IS HELPFUL to the user community regardless if the post is coming from someone who used the product or the author himself.
The only legal exception I found in the legal document is:
"Do not use the Site to sell or market your products to others and do not post a URL unless it directly answers a user’s question"
That means I can answer a question with a link to my book and the reference to the page number where I explain or answer that topic. Everybody can figure out how to play around that system so why not go the common sense route and get rid of the questionable restrictions in the first place.
And - if you listen Apple - at your next quarterly results meeting, between all those big sales and profit numbers, a nice little thank you to all those "free customer support" on the forums would be nice.
(Was this again a violation of "2.2 Do not add Submissions ... Discussions of Apple policies or procedures"? - I don't know. I usually have a lawyer sitting next to me when I'm writing Apple posts, but he went out for lunch)

  • Why is there no disc for Final Cut Pro X, is there one coming, and how do I transfer the program to a new machine from the download?  Thanks!

    Hello:
Why is there no disc for Final Cut Pro X?
    Is there one coming?
Can and how do I move the downloaded application from my old machine to a new computer?
    Thanks!

You purchase FCX in the Mac App Store, there is no disc. You can reload past purchases under your account within the app store. You should also be regularly backing up your system

  • New Canon EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro

Just thought your would like to know. From canonrumors.com
    http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/04/canon-updates-e1-plugin-for-fcp/
Canon today announces the latest update for EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro – the company’s custom-developed software application that provides quicker and easier editing of EOS Movie footage in Apple’s Final Cut Pro software suite.
Launching to coincide with the start of the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas, EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro version 1.2 will make the importing of EOS Movie files even easier, allowing users to transfer files from any folder, without needing to mirror the folder structure on the camera itself.
The update also enables smoother importing from Canon’s EOS 7D, EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV models, allowing users to import footage without requiring the THM file generated by the camera.
Originally launched in February 2010, EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro is designed to quickly and seamlessly convert EOS Movie footage from Canon’s leading range of EOS DSLR cameras to Apple’s high-quality ProRes 422 codec. The plug-in allows users to convert footage at approximately twice the speed of Apple’s standard conversion, creating a smoother workflow for the rapidly growing number of videographers shooting HD video content on DSLR cameras.
EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro version 1.2 will be available to download for free from 25th April 2011.

And I just spent over an hour yesterday explaining to a client how utterly essential it was to maintain the exact folder structure for proper log & transfer:/
If I say that once a day to students, I say it a thousand times.
On top of that I just started Carbon Copy Clone today with all my updates in my editing lab. Not the end of the world but it's a little time consuming on 80 stations. Oh well.

  • What is the cost for Final Cut Pro if I don't have a previous version to update?

What is the cost for Final Cut Pro if I don't have a previous version to update? I see the $299 price for updates.
What is the brand new purchase price?

Thanks so much. Yes I was thinking on the lines of PwnySlaystation's response.
    I appreciate the help.
Will this new version run on OS 10.6.8?
    Thanks for the help.

  • What is the recommended set up for Final Cut Pro re: Scratch Disks etc

What is the recommended set up for Final Cut Pro with regards to Scratch Disk etc.
I have a lot of projects and at the moment they are all over the place on various external HDDs etc.
I just bought a new Firewire 800 External HDD and want to get everything straight but I'm not quite sure where to start...
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank You

Media Manager (available from the File menu bar item) will consolidate all elements of your project together with a linked copy of the project file to a single folder in a location of your choice. There are various options to leave out unused footage, include handles etc. Safest way is to copy the files. Delete the originals when you are sure the copy works.
The user manual has a detailed description of how MM works.

  • Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro Now Available...

There's been so much talk about the 5D, 7D, 550D on this board that I'm going to point to the EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro. This is supposed to speed to transcode of Canon Camera H.264 to FCP-friendly formats and let you add more metadata along the way.
    Enjoy!
Canon webpage. Under Drivers & Downloads. Once you select your OS, "Mac OS X", the download should appear near the top of the "Software" list.
    Note: (from Quickstart Guide)
This plug-in software allows you to convert MOV movies shot with an EOS Digital camera into ProRes files at high speed in the (Log & Transfer) window of Apple's Final Cut Pro.
FWIW: The quick start guide says cameras involved are 7D, 5D, 1D, no mention of 550D. Sort of odd.

For users in North America to make the Canon EOS REBEL T2i work (550D for Europe):
    1. Install the new Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...nloadDetailAct)
    2. Go to Library/Application Support/ProApps/MIO/RAD/Plugins/CanonE1.RADPLug/Contents/Resources/
    2. Open up cameras.plist
    3. After the 7D info add the following lines of code (keeping to the coding structure):
    <key>T2i</key>
    <array>
    <string>Canon EOS REBEL T2i</string>
    </array>
    4. Save the text file. Close it. Everything should work now.
    Cheerz.

  • Sony NX30 or Canon XA10 for Final Cut Pro X?

I produce for nonprofits and am about to purchase a new iMac with Final Cut Pro X, and need to also purchase a video camera. The Sony NX30 or Canon XA10 are in my budget, but my challenge is that I'm not a real technical person, and so need to be able to import the footage easily into FCP-X. ANY advice on which camera would be best? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

This forum is not really suitable for comparing cameras as few (if any) people will have experience of both.
As the cameras are both AVCHD there should be no difference regarding the "ease of import".
The only thing that should concern you is whether one performs optically better than the other  .  .  .  .  if neither, then get the cheaper.
Google for camera reviews, but treat with caution those written by customers.
The best reviews are usually by professional testers who subject them to a standardised battery of tests.

  • Student Help advice! what is best iMac model for Final Cut Pro and logic pro

    Hi
I am currently looking into getting a iMac, but is toggling to device if I need a 27inch or a 21inch(top model),which will be used for Final Cut Pro and logic
There is a lot of money being invested iMac, and I really not want to be stu k with a computer that not going to keep up with the amount of work load in the future.
The specs that I have on mine are..
    21inch
    Upgrades include
    Sdd drive 512gb
    Intel core i7
    16gb of ram
    Or
    27 inch
    Upgrades
    Fusion drive or sdd 250gb
    Intel core i7
    (Possible graphic card) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5 [+ £105.60]
(Ram is way to expensive so will buy from second party)
Anyone who has brought a iMac for final cut or logic what would you likely buy?..Am really stuck on the hard drives between the 27inch fusion and 512gb on the 21inch
    My budget is £1900
My fear is that the 21inch top model's graphic card may not be good enough for advance editing on Final Cut Pro In the future when I start to get more deep into editing..logic really only needs 8gb to run smoothly..buts its the final cut specs that am having problems deciding. I know iMacs are not future proof or technology lasts for that matter, but I do expect to have it run good for a number of years before I upgrade again.
If anyone can give me some advice, or even tell me about there set up they have for media work please let me know.

All kinds of things affect system & HD performance, I can't tell you why your 4 year old Mac is slow.  Just because your old Mac is slow doesn't mean that a new iMac will be equally slow.
You are correct about the issue with the smaller fusion drives.  It's one of the reasons I am not high on recommending them.  Everyone thinks they want power & performance but don't understand the gap between marketing and real life performance.  The 1TB fusion drive however should give you a good combination of rapid access and sizeable storage capacity.
I have used external FW800 / 7200rpm drives for years and have never had a problem with any of them.  I consider them very reliable but admittedly I DO NOT use consumer drives like the WD MyBook that the big-box stores sell.   For the most part I assemble my own with OWC Mercury Elite enclosures.  In the past few years I have centered on WD Caviar Black and WD Scorpio Black drives.  I also have some Seagate Barracuda 7200.xx drives.  They all perform excellently and reliably.
Pls. refer to my earlier post for what i recommended to you.

  • Code for Final Cut Pro 2 not being accepted by FC Studio 2

I upgraded to OS X 10.4.11 from 10.4.2. The FC Studio 2 icon would bounce a few times and stop, but nothing else would happen. 10.4.2 was reinstalled, erasing everything. An attempt was made at starting FCP 2, but the OS is not finding the files necessary in OS 9.
Upgrades Final Cut Pro 4 and FC Studio 2 were made since purchasing FCP 2 as a full package approximately 7 years ago, but FC Studio 2 is not accepting the code for Final Cut Pro 2. How do I correct the problem short of buying the full FC Studio 2 or buying a new hard drive?
    Thank you.

It doesn't make sense to me either. As Thomas stated, the crossgrade that required you to send in your old FCP install disc was for Final Cut Studio version 1 (which included FCP 5.1) - NOT version 2. And regardless of the fact that you sent in your install disc, you should still have the serial number for FCP 4. It was printed on two stickers that were attached to the "Installing Your Software" booklet that was included when you purchased FCP 4 (upgrade or full retail versions).
There is NO need to have the old software installed in order to install and upgrade to FCS 1 or 2. All you need is the serial number form the older version; you'll be prompted to enter it during the install process for FCS 1 or 2.
FCP 2 may install on an OSX version, but will NOT run on ANY OSX version - it only runs on a full installation of OS 9.

  • Change for final cut pro HD from Pinnacle Studio 10

    Hello,
After lots of problems with Pinnacle Studio 10 (windoooooows.....) I finally chose to change for final cut pro HD on Mac OS 10.3.9
So far so good, I did lots of tutorials to learn but there is one very remarkable thing I really miss. Maybe there is just a thing in my configuration to fix...
Is it possible to view a part of a movie without randering it after every simple change? It must be technically possible because studio does it for years now, even with overlays.
Because I just upgraded my ibook with lots of RAM just to try out final cut for the moment, everything runs fine but rendering does take a few minutes/hours.... Well it is ok just to try out maybe I would get a macbook pro if final cut would assure me.
    I feel like cutting blind!
Studio renders right before exporting, this may take a few hours but I would do this during night...
As I said, maybe its all my fault and I just have to change some configurations....
    thanks for help
    Fabi

Make sure your RT settings (upper left menu in the timeline) is set to UNLIMITED RT. This means that the render settings will be adjusted to play back at the best resolution they can without rendering. You might get a green render bar or orange render bar. If you get a red render bar, that means that you have a filter or two that isn't RT and requires a render, or you have too many layers to allow for RT playback.
If you simply drop a raw clip into the timeline and have to render, that means something is wrong. Your clip settings and sequence settings don't match. You need to choose an Easy Setup that matches your footage, then create a new sequence.

  • Help for Final Cut Pro X training book.

    Hello everyone!
I've recently decided to study to get the Apple Certification for Final Cut Pro X level 1, so I bought the book "Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro X" by Diana Weynand. Due to a mistake of mine, I bought the edition released on October 2011, knowing later that there is a 2012 version and a new one coming out in just a month.
I'd like to know if I can still handle the exam studying this book released on 2011, or if I necessarily need to get the latest version coming out sooon.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    - Alex

I understand. I don't feel like waiting so much time, so I need to choose.
1 - Start studying my old 2011 book since I have it here, and see if I can make it before the exam is updated (I have no idea how much time it'll take me to study the entire book though, even if I study everyday).
2 - Buy the Motion 5 book and get that certification while waiting for the new FCPX book to come out.
3 - Just waiting for the new FCPX book (which means wasting time waiting).
Thanks for your answers and patience.

  • Keyboard for Final Cut Pro

The new thin keyboard that comes with the Mac Pro is not to my liking.
It continually runs words together when I type because I'm not hitting the space bar effectively. I'm also having to hit the keys harder just to ensure that the keystroke is recognized.
I also miss my ps2 PC keyboard that had colour-coded keys for Avid when I was on a PC.
Can anyone please suggest a usb keyboard that has shortcut keys for Final Cut Pro (latest version) and has extra usb ports (at least one) on the keyboard for the mouse and other usb peripherals and works correctly with a Mac Pro and includes the eject key to open/close the dvd bay doors on the Mac Pro?
    Thanks for any advice.

As far as 'color coding' your keyboard, I have had great success with a sticker set from
    www.editorskeys.com
I know some people want the 'official' color coded keyboard, but the cost of that compared to $20 for a sticker set is something to consider. I have had my set on my keyboard for over two years and have had no problems ... and I edit 5 days a week, eight hours a day so they have been 'put to the test'!!
    good luck

  • Problems with Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro

After about two weeks of using the Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro, I've found some clips are cut short when they are transcoded to Prores and appear in the browser. Has anyone else had this happen?

Yes, just started using this and noticed pretty soon afterwards. Seems to happen when I start clicking around or doing anything that uses the processor more than just surfing the web, but that's just anecdotal. I immediately stopped and started using MPEG Streamclip, but I really want the timecode.
Most recently, I had Log and Transfer open, transcoding some 7D footage, and a few of the clips didn't come in—they were left with the red stop-sign symbol/exclamation point. When I clicked to "retry," it stopped importing the current clip and started on the clip I retried. I clicked "retry" on another unimported clip, and again, the clip import stopped and the new clip began processing. I let it go through and, after the checking the footage, I discovered it had been incorrectly named the first clip's filename! Needless to say, I hand-checked every file to make sure it was the right duration (a few weren't), deleted the files from the Capture Scratch folder, and reimported—making sure I didn't touch the computer.
I hope they fix this bug, whatever it is.
BTW, I've experienced it on two separate Mac Pros.
