Bridge crashes with camera raw 4.4.1 installed, OK with 4.0

When I use Bridge with camera raw plugin 4.4.1 installed to navigate to a folder with at least one raw image shot with Sony Alpha 100, it consistently crashes. I can open the same image using Photoshop and Camera raw without a problem, so the image is not corrupted. Bridge works as expected with raw files from Sony Alpha 700.
If I revert to camera raw plugin 4.0 it works like a charm for Sony Alpha 100 pics, but my new Sony Alpha 700 is not supported.
I have tried using a clean user account, with no caches at all so that can not be the problem. I'm on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.3 and CS3.
Here is an excerpt from the crash log, showing that it is indeed the camera raw plugin causing the trouble:

I'm still looking for some help.
Now that I've learned a little bit more, let me try to restate my problem. In using both a Nikon D200 and a new Nikon D300. For software I'm using PS CS3 Extended Edition, as a part of Adobe's CS3 Design Premium suite. My Dell Inspiron 530 is running Vista Home Premium.
As I've said before, my problem is that I cannot open NEF files shot with either the D200 or D300 (and they are uncompressed NEF files). I downloaded the new Camera Raw plug-in, ver. 4.3.1, and unzipped it to \program files\common files\adobe\plug-in\CS3\file format. The Camera Raw.8bi file is dated 11/30/07 and is about 10,446,000 in size. Then I run a search of my hard drive to make sure there are no other Camera Raw files anywhere. Then, in PS Bridge, I purge the cache of the file folder where the NEF files are located. Then I try to open a NEF file and get the following error message in a PS CS3 Extended box:
"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."
Then, immediately afterwards I ran another search of my hard drive, and the Camera Raw.8bi file is GONE, DISAPPEARED, VANISHED.
Is the problem with the CS3 Entended Edition?
Can anyone help me out here, particularly you Nikon shooters?
Thanks for any advice.
Bob

  • PSE 8 compatibility with Adobe Bridge CS 5 Camera Raw

I have Photoshop Elements 8 installed with Camera Raw 5.5 on a Windows 7 64-bit platform.  I recently purchased Photoshop CS 5 which came with Camera Raw 6.2.  I think both products work well independently, with the exception noted at the end of this posting.  Where I'm encountering an issue is when I use Adobe Bridge to access an image file for processing which invokes Camera Raw 6.2. -- the changes made to the file show up in Adobe Bridge, but are not observable when the same file is viewed in the Photoshop Elements Organizer.  When I look at the file properties I can see that Camera Raw 6.2 updated the file and the updated date does appear in the file properties accessible through PS Elements Organizer.  However, the items listed in the Camera Raw metadata are different in the two products (PS vs PSE).  Since the sidecar .xmp files are a form of XML, I'm wondering if Camera Raw 6.2 is writing data in a structure that is not supported by Camera Raw 5.5?  I've tried to update PSE Camera Raw to version 6.2 following the instruction that appear on line, but it does not seem to install.  Durring installation there are no error messages, but after the "installation" PSE Camera Raw still shows version 5.5.  I noticed this first when editing a large number of "legacy" .jpg files, but I also have concern when editing Nikon .nef files.
It's a bit hard to tell, but when editing .nef files in Camera Raw 6.2 the changes may migrate to PSE once I tell PSE to update the thumbnail view.  But what I observed was a very distinct differece in file's visual appeared when viewed in Adobe Bride CS5 vs PSE 8 Organizer.  The PSE 8 images had greater color saturation.  This leaves me wondering what's going on.

On my Windows 7 64 bit system the original version of Camera Raw.8bi was found in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements8\File Formats\ and had a size of 11,781 Kb shown in Windows Explorer.  The file properties listed the size as (12,063,088 bytes).  The digital signature was signed Thursday, September 03, 2009 3:34:37 PM.  To the best of my knowledge this is the version that shipped on the PSE 8 disk which I installed in December 2009.
There is another copy  of Camera Raw.8bi found in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats\ and had a size of 11,856 Kb shown in Windows Explorer.  The file properties list the size as (12,140,496 bytes).  The digital signature was signed Friday, August 20, 2010 3:30:03 AM.  This date post dates the installation of Photoshop CS 5 on my system so it must have happened through some (automatic?) update.
The Camera Raw.8bi file that I've down loaded from Adobe for ACR 6.2 is the same size and has the same signing date as the one identified immediately above in the CS5\File Formats\ sub folder.
When I copy the down loaded file into the Elements8\File Formats\ sub folder PSE still indicates that ACR is version 5.5
I also have a copy of ACR in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats\ with a length of 14,526 KB shown in Windows Explorer.  The file properties list the size as (14,874,576 bytes) and the signing date as Friday, August 20, 2010 10:39:07 AM.  I presume this to be the copy of ACR used by Adobe Bridge and Photoshop which I installed as a 64-bit application.  Since the signing date (but not the time) is the same as the date for the file in CS5\File Formats\ I'm guessing that it is also the result of an automatic update to version 6.2.
Something that's not making sense to me is that the down load was approximately 50 MB and I'm messing around manually moving a 12 MB file into a specific sub folder.

  • Can't open NEF with Camera Raw from Bridge

I recently updated to CS6 and got a new Nikon D600.  Downloaded the lastest DNG converter but when I pull up files in Bridge I can't open them with Camera Raw anymore.  My process was to open in Bridge.  Select the NEF files I wanted then click mouse+control, which gave me a menu to open in Camera Raw.  Now my only option is Photoshop CS6.  I downloaded the trial for Photoshop CC and Bridge CC but still can't select to open with Camera Raw.
What is going on?  I have never had issues like I have been.  HELP Please.

From your description it sounds as if Camera Raw isn't installed, or is installed incorrectly. In Photoshop go to Help/about plug-ins/Camera Raw and verify that you have it installed correctly. Since you are on a Mac, I cannot advise as to where it should be installed.
The other thing I have been thinking about in your situation is, how were these images downloaded from your camera?if you used an older version of Nikon Transfer it can alter the files so that they cannot be opened in Camera Raw.
Do you have other software like ViewNX2 or CaptureNX2, and will those programs open your files?

  • Bridge CS4 HATES Camera Raw 5.2, refuses to play

I've been dealing with this issue for a week now with no success.
Bridge will not open raw files in Camera Raw. period. Bridge will show raw image thumbnails, but I keep getting that annoying "Camera raw editing is not enabled" dialog box when I try and open them. I get the dialog when I try and access the preferences through Bridge as well.
I've tried everything I can think of:
    - Opening PS CS4 ACR first, then clicking the Bridge button to launch Bridge. I've also tried opening an image and editing it first in PS.
= Made sure that ACR was installed in the correct location. It is, because PS ACR works, and Bridge obviously recognizes the plug-in.
    - Tried raw files from different cameras.
Completely installed both Photoshcp and Bridge AND erased my harddrive. I am and was using OSX 10.5.5
    - Created another user. Interestingly (I think), PShop and Bridge didn't work at all with Camera Raw. The Camera Raw plug-in was installed in the right place, but the permissions were locked for the file for this user. I tried to change them in the GET INFO box, but it didn't help. I had to download the ACR fresh from Adobe and erase the other one to work with this new user account. And no, after doing that, Bridge still would not open ACR files. Going back to my real user account, I had to erase the ACR file and do the same thing, because now the permissions for THIS user were locked.
    - So, I tried to repair permissions on the entire system next. It fixed a couple things that had to do with Quicktime.
Now I'm back to square one. It seems like this might be a unique problem to me, but I have seen other forums that include people on both PC and Mac with this same problem. Their fixes do nothing for me though.
Are there any genius relationship experts that can get Bridge and ACR to be friends again?!
    Thanks

    Philip,

<br /> It's perfectly OK to have one copy of ACR installed in the correct folder for each different version of Photoshop you have installed.
    <br />
<br /> I have every version of Photoshop from 7.0.1 through 11 ("CS4") happily coexisting on my machine, and ACR 2.4, 3.7, 4.6 and 5.2 in its corresponding folder.

  • Can´t open files with camera raw

    Hi!
I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 and the option to open files with Camera Raw is disabled in Bridge and in PS.
    Can anyone help?

While each situation can be different this has been discussed on several threads. Scan down the list or do a search. If you can't find the answer, post a note.

  • PSE 9 does not come with Camera Raw 6.2?

Photosho Elements 9 does not come with camera raw 6.2
, I downloaded the trial version which came with an outdated 6.1... the only version of 6.2 is for PSE8 and does not work with PSE9 how is this possible? How can they release a product with an outdated ACR????Now we have to wait for an update to a new product???Come on people!!!

Cheap shot, Phil. Up to now, Mac users got no Organizer but a special bonus: full Bridge, full access to full featured ACR. With this version, both platforms get the same stuff -- it's less than full Photoshop/Bridge CS5, at a small fraction of the price.
I admit, as a Mac user who shoots RAW, I liked the old trade-off...but I can understand the desire to make the two products consistent. If that makes PSE "inferior" for you than you should stick with Bridge CS4/Raw 5.7, or move up to the full-featured siblings, or switch to Lightroom.

  • Bridge CS6 and Camera Raw

I am unable to open jpegs into camera raw through Bridge CS6. Camera Raw preferences are unavailable. I am using OS 10.9.2.

Did you recently update to camera raw 8.4?
If so, you need to replace the existing camera raw 8.4 plugin with the one from this link:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/acr-84-bridge-cs6-metadata.html

  • Open with camera raw is gone, any ideas?

Open with camera raw is gone, any ideas thanks?

    AND FROM THE FINDER:
Kevin, you keep trying to open files in ACR using the right mouse click menu in Finder and it will never show up. Use Bridge, select the file in the content window and then use right mouse click on a supported file.
Supported are Raw files according to the list provided on this page:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
And jpeg and tiff if you have set the camera raw preferences to handling jpeg and tiff files.
But this works only in Bridge because ACR is a plug in that opens in PS and Bridge. If you choose to the Open With Route you always open ACR in Bridge.
Setting jpeg and tiff to 'open automatically with settings' means that if you have previous applied ACR settings (the icon for it shows top right of the thumb) you are able to double click or use open to open the files in ACR using PS.
Setting the prefs to open jpeg and tiff always in ACR means you can use the same options for opening Raw files, but this is not recommended because opening a simple jpeg file in mail or whatever also opens the file first in ACR instead of PS.

  • Problem loading large DNG images with Camera RAW!

    Hello,
When loading large DNGs with Camera RAW 4.4 (for example, DNG dimensions are 9984x6656) CS3 says "cannot open the image because this is not a right kind of a document". EXACTLY THE SAME file is loaded without a problem using Camera RAW 3.7 and 4.0 (did not test other versions). Have you specially prevented loading of large files? Wouldn't it be better to provide this as an option? It's a real disappointment - new version of plugin CANNOT do the thing that older versions CAN. (Simply using older version is not an option, as I need to load RAWs from new cameras, like Canon 450D).
Dear Adobe, please correct this problem :)

It might be wise to give some insight like how the DNG was created, by what version of what software, if ACR is hosted in Photoshop or Bridge... What platform you are using, how much RAM, memory allocation, etc.

  • Help render the raw files edited with camera raw how?

    Hi
    i have a problem
i use  bridge cs5 (updated) to browse my raw files
often i open my raw files with camera raw inside bridge cs5 and make some corrections like exposure , saturation , contrast and so on
but after bridge doesn't re-render the files
i mean the thumbs ,previews , the slideshow still are in default setting
when i click and open with camera raw inside bridge or with photoshop cs5 ,the raw files look with corretions
but again bridge show me not with the corrections
    i run under w7 32bit
    what could be the problem?
    thanks

    mantralightroom wrote:
i see previews and thumbs with the edits but with a big delay
    thanks
If you are using HQ On Demand you will get fast thumbnails, but there will be a delay in generating the preview as Bridge builds it.
The Always HQ takes more space, but faster as the data is already in cache.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem opening photos with camera raw 7.1 with Photoshop CS6

I am using Windows 7 32 bit system with 4GB ram and graphics accelerator.
I have Photoshop CS5.1 installed in the same system at it works perfectly.
What happens is when I use the B+W function, I get an error message saying that I have not enough ram.
After that, when I open the next photo with Camera Raw, the raw image will not open.
I have already maximised the Ram that Photoshop can use to 1.7GB and there is more than enough space in my scratch disk.
Anyone can tell me what the problem is?

    Hi Noel,
    Thanks for your reply.
    Just to clarify.
I applied B+W layer adjustment on my photos.  It is part of an automated set of actions which I apply to all my photos.  I adjust the B&W layer to 50% overlay.  When I click on the B&W adjustment layer, there is an error message that tells me I have not enough ram. Once that happens, when I open the next photo in raw, I don't see the new photo but only the frame of the camera raw though which I see my photoshop desktop.
It doesn't occur with the first few photos.  But by the 3rd or 4th it happens.
I will adjust it to 50% and see what happens.

  • Possible GPU Issues With Camera Raw 6.6

Over the past day on my Windows 7 x64 workstation I've done some updates.  Specifically:
The Adobe updater brought in Camera Raw 6.6, replacing 6.5.
I updated the to the ATI Catalyst 11.12 display driver version from previous version 11.11.
I allowed Windows Update to apply the dozen or so changes that were pending.
I was just doing some OpenGL testing with Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 x64 and I noticed that under some conditions I saw Photoshop drop out of OpenGL acceleration.  Specifically, when I opened a Canon 5D Mark II image through Camera Raw I saw subsequent operations stop using OpenGL acceleration even though the checkmark remained in the [  ] Enable OpenGL Drawing box in Edit - Preferences - Performance.
What I did to determine whether OpenGL acceleration was enabled was this:  Select the Zoom Tool, then click and hold the left mouse button on the image.  When OpenGL is enabled, I see a smooth increase in zoom.  When it goes disabled, I see only a jump in zoom level after letting up the mouse button.  Also, the [  ] Scrubby Zoom box gets grayed out.  As I mentioned, even in this condition, a check of Edit - Preferences - Performance still shows OpenGL enabled.
Just as a control, I saved the converted file as a PSD, and every time I opened THAT file (with a fresh copy of PS CS5 running) and did the same operations I could not reproduce the failure.  The difference being I did not run Camera Raw.
Since I wasn't specifically looking for issues with Camera Raw, I am not sure that the problem occurred every time I did run Camera Raw.  I do know that when I open images from my own camera (40D; I do not own a 5D Mark II) that the problem doesn't seem to occur.  Notably I always open my image from Camera Raw to the largest possible pixel size - 6144 x 4096, as I did with the 5D Mark II image, so it's not an obvious size difference that's leading to the issue.  Given other comments of late, I'm wondering if it could be a specific issue with conversions of files from 5D Mark II.
Nor am I sure whether any of the above updates caused it - it might done this before; I don't regularly convert 5D Mark II images.  I DO think I would have noticed Photoshop reverting to GDI operation before, since I just noticed it pretty easily, but I'm not completely sure of that either.  I do use OpenGL-specific features (such as right-click brush sizing) pretty often.
I'm trying now to find a set of steps with which to reliably reproduce the problem now, and will advise.
    -Noel

Figures.  Now I can't reproduce the problem at all, even after an hour of testing.  It probably had nothing to do with Camera Raw.
I wonder if there are latent GPU status indicators and config values stored by Photoshop based on its specific environment that might not be right for the first run (or first few runs) after a display driver update.  Hm....
    -Noel
