Bridge cs3 preview and slideshow question

Hi
i have a question
does bridge cs3 need cache (drive space) to preview a photo or to see my photo with the slideshow feature ?
i mean does bridge need to render and store the photos in the database to let me see in the slideshow or browsing
i don't talk about thumbs
or does it on the fly?
thanks

If you don't need High Quality for thumbnails then select Quick Thumbnails in preferences.
I think as soon as you point Bridge to a folder of images it goes to work caching the thumbnails and previews.  I'm using cs4, have forgotten how cs3 does it for quick thumbnails.  You could point Bridge to a new folder of jpegs and watch the rotating indicator status display at the bottom; and you might get more information by posting in the Bridge forum.

  • Full screen preview and slideshow are blurry / fuzzy

    Hi folks-
I just upgraded from CS2 to CS4, in part to improve efficiency of selecting photos - I wanted the zoom and loupe features. Unfortunately a very basic function has been compromised and I'm hoping there's a solution: In both full-screen preview and slideshow the full-screen image is notably blurry. This is a problem for two reasons: 1. I can't judge pictures accurately by just flipping through them in full-screen mode (without zooming to 100% to see if they are well-focused). 2. I can't use Slideshow for, well, slideshows. I've had to resort to keeping another app (like Windows Picture Viewer) open just to be able to quickly flip through and evaluate images full-screen or to show slideshows.
I've tried setting all the options related to image quality (they mostly have to do with caching thumbnails and speeding 100% viewing); I've tried purging the cache files. Nothing helps.
    Any ideas?  Thanks!

It seems to me that there is something wrong with it.
I am trying Bridge CS4 as a viewer for my JPEG files.
I also noticed that the previews were fuzzy. I activated the high-quality previews as well as the option to generate the previews at screen size.
Here's what I noticed. I went to check out a specific photo that is quite sharp with a number of straight lines, angles, details, where it's very easy to detect a lack of sharpness. That photo immediately looked fuzzy to me, which didn't jive with my memory of it. I quickly opened it in other viewers, which displayed it as intended with all the expected sharpness.
So, I went through the settings to see where the problem could be and I immediately thought of checking the box to get software previews instead of hardware, restarted the app, purged the cache, tried again. There my photo had recovered its sharpness, or at least most of it. I thought I found the culprit, but not quite.
I went to browse other photos and found one in particular with a lot of fine detail (hair) and that photo also didn't display all the sharpness that it should have (I was still using software mode). The difference was very slight and to make sure of it it required A/B comparison between Bridge and PS, but there was a difference.
Now I tried the opposite. I went back to hardware rendering mode, restarted, purged the cache, tried again. That second photo looked alright in preview, but the previous photo looked fuzzy again.
So, it doesn't work the same way for each photo...
What's the main difference between the first photo, obviously fuzzy in hardware mode, and the second one, alright in hardware mode but slightly fuzzier in software? The ratio. The first one is a vertical photo, the second one is horizontal (close to square).
I quickly checked other vertical photos and they showed the same behavior...
Now staying in hardware mode, I noticed something else. When I preview the vertical photo and click on it, or double click, it quickly jumps, switching between 2 versions of the photo: the one displayed originally (fuzzy) and another one, with a very slightly different size, which is sharp. During that manipulation it also briefly displays "100%" at the top of the screen. It doesn't stick when you click and immediately switches back, so it looks like a glitch.
Now in software mode, I tried the same, this time you can click once on the photo (which is originally displayed *almost* sharp). When you click once, it displays "100%" but also displays a very slightly smaller version that is clearly fuzzy. Clicking again goes back to the other, less fuzzy one, but doesn't display "100%" this time.
Doing the same test on horizontal photos shows no change that I can see.
So, it seems to me that in the preview mode, Bridge has trouble displaying some photos (vertical ones?) in their actual resolution (100%)
and since there is a slight resizing going on, it brings fuzziness. This doesn't explain the very slight fuzziness seen on horizontal photos in software mode.
Now I'll mention, for those still awake, that I saw no fuzziness on the same vertical photos when I go to Review Mode with *hardware* rendering. Photos there are sharp. Now if I go to the review mode with software rendering enabled, vertical photos are not 100% sharp (akin to the small difference I mentioned earlier while in software mode), while they are sharper in preview.
To sum up, it seems that the only configuration that gives me consistently 100% sharp (=as they were meant to be after post-processing) photos no matter what their orientation, is when I stay in hardware rendering mode and use the Review Mode, instead of preview.
This all really smells like a bug.
For info, I am using Windows 7 and an ATI HD4850 card, and this only about processed JPEG files, not RAW files.
Perhaps the preview is really meant as a quick preview and not a tool to view final photos at 100% accuracy...

  • Bridge CS3 Previews/Slideshow Scaling Too Slow on Powerbook G4 15"

I've been using Photoshop CS3 itself for months and it's plenty fast. Bridge, on the other hand, is unusable for me right now because when I click an 6-megapixel jpeg image, a fuzzy/blotchy preview showed immediately, but it takes a full seven seconds for a high-quality preview to show. The exact same thing occurs in the slideshow mode. Of course, once the high-quality preview has been cached, it shows up instantly, but this is a real issue for newly-viewed files.
Is this a known issue? If so, is there a way to make the high-quality preview reasonably fast, so that there's only a delay of a second or two max?
Graphic Converter is quite snappy for previews and full-screen slideshows on this ~1.6 Ghz G4, but I would prefer to use Bridge for its advanced organizing features and integration with Photoshop.
    Thank you for your help,
    Cameron

    >It makes no difference whether your files originated as 10- or 12-megapixel digital camera files or as 120 MB 16-bit Tiff scans, 4,000 images are still 4,000 images!
    <br />
<br />Actually, no. How files originate makes
    <br />b all
    <br /> the difference!
    <br />
<br />E.g. a film scan is by definition very slow, so processing, sorting, culling, stacking all occur prior to a few hero images being selected for scanning. Those activities occur manually rather than in software.
    <br />
<br />Similarly - again with no disrespect intended - your 4000 images captured over weeks on a slow digicam with a film-centric mindset are
    <br />b nothing
<br /> like capturing hundreds or thousands of shots, many of
    <br />i dynamic subjects,
<br />during intense DSLR RAW shooting of a day or two.
    <br />
<br />E.g. the other day I was alone (meaning no helper to control the feisty new pup) walking my new lab puppy during failing light and decided to shoot a pic for emailing to friends. I would run away from the puppy, turn around and shoot continuous high speed autofocus pix of Ruby as she ran toward me. Even though Ruby can run almost as fast as I can, in 5 minutes of failing light I had shot 50-100 12 MP RAW images that then needed to be keyworded, stacked, stacks reviewed for ranking and culls, and an email generated.
    <br />
    <br />
    <a href="http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1ybNMDLvrZ84DrWBMZ0a5QE8fKUkY" /></a>
    <img alt="Picture hosted by Pixentral" src="http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1ybNMDLvrZ84DrWBMZ0a5QE8fKUkY_thumb.jpg" border="0" />
    <br />Nikon D2x, f/4, 85mm.
    <br />
<br />The whole process was easy and fast. With a low end point-and-shoot in failing light I would not have had 50 properly exposed, properly focused naturally lit pix that needed close comparative evaluation. At best one would end up with one or two focused keepers; no fancy software necessary to cull a dozen out-of-focus pix.
    <br />
<br />My point is simply that folks who are evolving into DSLR workflows, especially those of dynamic subjects like people (with constantly changing expressions that are well suited to shooting stacks of quick image captures), should beef up their hardware, buy the Aperture tutorial/CD, download the Aperture and/or LR trials and check out a modern workflow.

  • Previews and Slideshows: a perennial question

    Hi all,
I make slideshows in Aperture (and iMovie and iDVD) only once a year, and it seems like I have to re-learn it every time.  To all the people who claim that iMovie and iDVD are intuitive, I guess you and I are very different!
But that's beside the point:  I know that, for Aperture slideshows to look good, previews have to be set to (at least) the resolution of the playing device.  And I know that that's spelled out (a little bit) in the Aperture manual in the Chapter 5 section on "Previews."
My first question is a bit of a vent: why is there no discussion of preview quality in Chapter 20 on "Slideshows" (where it might be useful!)?
And then my real question is: can I -- just before generating the slideshow -- simply "select all" of the versions I want in the slideshow, raise the quality on the previews in "Preferences" and then "Regenerate Previews"  -- and then generate the slideshow.   (And then go back to previews in Preferences and set it where it was?)
    Thank you!

On the second page in the Slideshow chapter of the User Manual, this section is separated and highlighted:
"About Displaying Sharp Images in Slideshows
To display slideshows at the best quality, you should set Aperture to create high-resolution previews. In addition to setting previews to their highest resolution, you should also use full-size previews to prevent upscaling with large displays. If previews are not available, images in the slideshow may not be as sharp as they would be otherwise. For more information about creating high-resolution previews, see Working with Preview Images." (http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/#chapter=22%26section=2)
The Previews page (linked in the original) is one of the most comprehensive of all the help pages.

  • Bridge CS3 Preview won't begin to Play unless "nudged"

Bridge CS3 on Windows XP.  I'm trying to Preview HDV .M2T files.  When I select an .M2T file the first frame will appear in the Preview pane correctly.  If I hit Space or the Play button, the Play "arrow" icon changes to a Pause icon, but the file won't begin to play.  If I move the scrub pointer at all, the file plays correctly from that location.  If I let the file play to its end, then hit Space or Play then the file starts playing correctly.  It just seems the .M2T video files won't initially start playing in the preview pane unless the scrub timeline is touched.  Searched all forums but couldn't find a similar problem.
Some additional details - I tried changing the file extension to .mpg but problem persists.  If I go to another directory and select an MPEG-2 .mpg file it previews correctly.  Same with a .m2v file.  Seems like the sticking problem is with HDV .M2T files from my Sony Z1U.  Will try some other formats.  Could it be a codec issue?  I do Nero ShowTime installed on this same PC.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - TIA.

Thanks for checking out that clip.  It must be something on my system - I'm suspecting it's possibly a codec from Nero ShowTime.
I did double-check the two items you suggested.  The "play automatically" box does as it should and tries to start playing the clip, but just as if I were to hit Space it simply freezes at the first frame.  In the thumbnails size box I've entered 999MB with no change.
Again, it's not that the clips won't play at all in Preview.  They will play if I nudge the scrub bar.  They'll also play from the start if I first play them to the end.  It's just the very first time you try to play (or autoplay) the clips, they won't go.  Strange...
Well, thanks again for trying and if anyone has any other suggestions I'd appreciate them.

  • Color Cast Only On Mac Generated jpg files When Viewed In Bridge Cs3 Preview

    Hi,
( Issue With Cs3 Bridge Viewing Jpgs - Getting Colour Cast on the Mac Generated Jpgs Files Only When Viewed In Bridge Cs3 On PC )
Using  CS3 creative suite Mac & PC and viewing all files on the PC.
We have  psd files when viewing in bridge they are  ok and save jpgs via PS3 both on the Mac & PC off the same PSD file that we started with.
But when viewing these jpg files in bridge we get a red cast only when viewing from the Mac generated files from the same PSD we started with.
When we open the jpg files up in Photoshop all of them are ok we no issues only when viewing in bridge we get the red cast.
All PSD files have the same information content:
    Bit depth
    Colour space
    Pixel size
Why are we getting this happening.
    Thnx

Thanks very much for that lead, NormanPCN. I do have Auto Tone checked, though the rendered files in the example above do not have XMP sidecars. I will try unchecking Auto Tone even so, and post back when I see what happens.
    Thanks again,
    Kieren
EDIT: Bingo! I took Auto Tone off in ACR Preferences (in Bridge) and the non-RAW files immediately regenerated thumbs and previews. They now are indistinguishable from the PSD. There is still the very slight difference which I mentioned between the PSD and the CR2. While that seems odd, it is small enough to be relatively trivial.
    Many thanks!

  • Lightroom slideshow  - preview and slideshow shows dark pictures

All presented images in lightroom 1.2 are fine. Only when viewing a slideshow, the screen switches to black. This is also the fact during previewing a slideshow. In the film area on the bottom of the screen, the relevant images are marked and the counter changes according to the chosen changing time.
During the time version 1.0/1.1 was used, everything worked fine: Any suggestion for a solution?

Updating the video card driver has solved this for a number of Windows users.

  • I have lost catalog, previews and slideshow

I made a slide show. When I wnet in to change something the pictures would not come up in either slideshow, library or develope. An Error box said something about the previews were corrupted. I looked up what to do (delete the previews and let it rebuild) It did not work. Now I am in a really big mess. Others of my pictures are a missing. All the pictures from the slide show are missing. I know that the originals are still on my computer but I need to get back to the slideshow and how it was set up. I need help really fast. The customer is expecting the corrected version of the slideshow in 2 days!

I realized when I wrote the note that details were being left out but I was almost afraid that I would scare people off, at least that is the way it seemed. I have been looking for an answer for days now and no one has answered. Thanks DJ.
I am running a PC on Microsoft Windows 7. I use Lightroom 4 upgraded to 4.4.
I am not a techy, I am a Grandmother that loves photography, and Lightroom, but for the life of me there are some parts of Lightroom that I just don’t understand.
I loaded and fixed up some pictures in Lightroom and then made a slide show from the pictures. The pictures are not mine, I am doing it for an organization.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3ms3xlWgbE . When I went back in to make some corrections I got an error message.
I put the exact error message into Google, which said :"Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches".   It never did fix itself so I  found several sites that said I needed to delete the preview cash. Now this is where, to me, it gets complicated:  I didn’t know where the preview cashe was so I put it in my programs and files search and to my surprise it showed me a bunch of catalogs that I didn’t even know that I had. I selected the one with the most recent activity on it and deleted the preview cashe. It didn’t seem to do anything, no error message, nothing. When I went back into the catalog that had the pictures and slide show in it, it seemed to be gone.
I understand that it may have deleted it but it has never attempted to rebuild it and now all of those pictures and their changes seem to no longer be in Lightroom. I am afraid to do anything else for fear that I will really screw things up.
Now that I am calming down a bit, just from finally making contacting with someone else about this, I do realize that the pictures being missing is another problem. Can I discuss this with you later?
Is this forum the only way to talk to you? I was afraid that what ever that delete was that I hit deleted a bunch of other pictures.

  • CS3 ratio and text question

I just don't get this ratio thing.  I'm editing a project in widescreen.  All of my assets show 720x480 under Video info in the project window, yet they all fit in the wide screen format in the timeline output.  I don't get that because 720x480 is 4x3.
So I open the text window to insert some text and I see that that window is in the 4x3 format and I don't know how to widen it so that I can move the text anywhere on the widescreen timeline.
My main question is how to get the text window to be widescreen but if anyone can lend an explanation to this whole ratio thing I'd also appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Craig

There are two "Aspect Ratios." The first is the Aspect Ratio of the Frame Size. That is the 720 x 480, that you see. Then, there is the PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio), that John T. mentioned. In SD, there are two common PAR's, that determine how the images are composed, using non-square pixels. Basically, they are 0.9 and 1.2 (CS4 and CS5 have corrected the rounding of these PAR's just a bit), meaning that for Standard (4:3), one has rectangular pixels that are taller, than they are wide, hence the 0.9 PAR and for Widescreen (16:9), they are wider, than they are tall, hence the 1.2 PAR. It's the same pixel x pixel count, but those pixels are different sizes of rectangles.
Good luck, and hope that this helps,
    Hunt
PS - for 4:3 Titles, you can use the fixed Effects>Motion>Scale (unchecking Proportional), but do watch out for "stretched" Text, as it might be easier to redo, than alter those visual attributes.

  • Bridge CS5 preview / slideshow not working on 27" Apple Cinema Display

I'm using my 2009 (black key) MacBookPro and Mac OS X 10.6.7 running Snow Leopard.
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Adobe Bridge CS5 works beautifully on my MBP, my photography workflow depends on Bridge.
However, when I attach my 27" Apple Cinema Display and try to preview images by hitting the space bar I get a gray screen. Likewise, the slideshow renders only gray.
It's not the "black out other monitor". I've cleared the cache to re-render all the previews.
I've scoured these forums as well as the Apple ones, and the helpful folks currently at Photoshop World in Orlando advised me that, collectively, the kind people here know everything.   I know I can't be the only photographer who uses this configuration. I'd like to use the display for client previews/ordering.
I would so appreciate any tips you may have for me; thank you in advance for your time.
    Warmly,
    Darcy
    http://hisandhersphoto.net

Yes, thank you. I found that post - among others when researching before I asked. I tried all the suggestions in that one and in the others.
My issue isn't low quality rendering in the preview and slideshow - my issue is NO rendering at all in slideshow and preview. It's just blank. Gray.
I deleted the cache in my library and through the Bridge program itself to rebuild the previews. I tried the various options of "software rendering" on and off, and different configurations in the preferences and none seem to make the preview or slideshow work. I have all the updates from Adobe and from Mac.
I tried importing the photos I need to show my clients (who are coming to my studio this evening!) into Lightroom 3, and the LR slideshow works. But using LR and having to import photos into it is an extra step not in my workflow.
Ideally, I can make Bridge work instead of making yet another resource-consuming copy of these photos on this computer via the Lr library.
So - current state is unsolved.
Lightroom 3 slideshow and preview works, but isn't ideal since it involves importing the images into Lr. Since that works - would that mean my video card is acceptable?
Bridge can show thumbnails on the 27" display but no preview or slideshow.
Bridge preview and slideshow works perfectly on my 15" MacBook Pro.
I'm so disappointed since I bought the 27" Apple Cinema Display this week and was told it would work with my computer "out of the box" - I was sure to ask several times, "so there's nothing else I need to buy or do to make this work with my programs? Just plugin and go?" and several times I was assured, "Yes... plugin and go."
I sure would appreciate anyone who's made Adobe Bridge work with a 27" display. Thank you!

  • PSE6 Bridge CS3 - can I import from iPhoto

I have the new PSE6 (love it) and Bridge CS3 (ambivalent) and iPhoto (easy to use) on the same imac 24. I have imported from my reader into iPhoto - over 2000 pics - but want the functionality of PSE6 to manipulate images.
Can it be done? I really do not want to duplicate 2000 pics on my hard drive. The only way I have been able to do individuals is from the base directory, with no ability to browse properly. It IS frustrating, and probably only needs a little tweek.
I use a Canon 40d and have tried the sRAW concept, with crap results
    Cheers, George Cooper

    George,
    That can't be done.
If you do a forum search on
iPhoto you will find existing threads where this has been discussed before, for instance:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b4aff8/1
    You don't
    "import" images
"into" Bridge. You just browse and open them wherever they reside in the Finder.
iPhoto, on the other hand, creates a virtual library and hides your images from access through the Finder... and from Bridge.
Good luck with Elements 6. I just requested a refund for a copy I had bought for a laptop. First time I have ever returned an Adobe product, and I've been an Adobe customer for well over 20 years.
I guess if you've never used the full Photoshop, you won't know what you're missing. I found Elements overwhelmingly, oppressively limited. Even ACR is bestially crippled when hosted by Elements, even though it is the same plug-in used by the full version of Photoshop.
    The
free GIMP is far, far superior to Elements.
Oh well... I hated iPhoto too. :/

  • Don't have permission to delete files in Preview or Adobe Bridge CS3

    Help!
I'm unable to delete image files in Preview or Adobe Bridge CS3.
    Workflow:
    1. Take a bunch of photos on my Nikon
    2. Load them to my MacBook Pro, 10.6.3
    3. Open them in Preview and right-click "Move to Trash" on the photos that I don't want.
==> this results in "Move to Trash Failed. Some files could not be moved to Trash."
    4. If I open the bunch of photos in Adobe Bridge CS3 and command-delete the photos that I don't want
==> I get "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient permissions."
I am logged in as the same user who loaded the image files.
Permission on the image folder start out at
    me: Read & Write
    admin: Read only
    everyone: Read only
but even if I change all to Read & Write, I still get the same errors.
    What's going on?????

  • Bridge CS3 and Duotone: odd behavior

    Hello all.
Are there any users of Bridge CS3 that work with duotone images?
The new version of bridge displays the color mode correctly as Duotone, but now the color profile is still the profile of what it was when the image was in RGB mode (Adobe RGB, ProPhoto, etc).
In Bridge CS2, the color profile of duotone images was always displayed as sRGB IEC1966-2.1. At least then it was constant across all my images.
However in both Photoshop CS2 and CS3, duotone images show up as "untagged duotone" Color Profile what gives?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    -Andrew

    Ramón,
Thank you for your reply. The only times I have purged the cache has been through the Tools menu, as i've read from various people, including you, that the other option is "broken".
    Omke,
In Grayscale color mode, Bridge shows the color profile that's embedded in the image. That comes from the Gray Working Profile selected in Photoshop's "color settings." The only way i know of to create a duotone is to start with a grayscale image. Even the "conditional mode change" function in File > Automate converts the image to grayscale as an intermediate step.
Now, on to the original question, open to anybody who works with duotones in Bridge...
    a) Does anybody know why Bridge CS3 is treating the color profile of duotones differently than in CS2.
    b) is there any way to make it consistently show one profile? -- at this point i don't care muchly what profile it's displaying as long as it's the same for all my duotones.

  • Illustrator files aren't previewing properly in Bridge CS3

I have used bridge for ages and have never had this problem before. However I recently had to reinstall CS3 design suite and now illustrator files wont preview properly - they appear really small and instead of previewing just the art board (as it used to), it previews everything on the document including all the extraneous information I have on my specs layer that I don't need to see. I have looked through all the preference panels and can't find any way of changing this. Help would be gratefully appreciated!

Check your Acrobat Page Display settings in Preferences. They may be set different than the Windows computer. Look at the settings in the "Rendering" area.

  • Bridge CS3 no longer previews CR2 Canon

Currently previews of canon raw photos loaded in Bridge do not always show the photo, only the generic icon "CR2", and won't show the photo when slidestrip icon is selected either. It worked on previous downloads, but not currently. I can see the photos OK in Preview, PS CS3, and Iview, so it's only Bridge that has the problem. Tried purging the cache as Ramon suggests, to no avail.
Current equipment: iMac Intel, Mac OS 10.5.5, Camera Raw 4.6, Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9, Canon 40D.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

I had a similar problem. I tried everything here and it still did not work. So I went back to v 4.3.1. After going back to 4.3.1, I decided to see if I installed v4.6 manually, would it work. It did.
So if you can only see the raw icon and not the raw images in Bridge, and you have the new Plug-in v 4.6 installed, this is what you do.
1 - Close Bridge (and Photoshop)
2 - Download the previous Plug-in v 4.3.1 if you do not still have it.
3 - Go to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug ins/CS3/File Formats in your HD (NOT the Library in the users folder)
4 - Place the Plug-in 4.3.1 in the File Formats folder
5 - Open Bridge and see that the raw images are images and not icons
6 - Close Bridge (and Photoshop)
    7 - Go back to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug ins/CS3/File Formats this time installing Plug-in v 4.6.
Now I made a new folder in the File Formats folder that I called OldPlugins and placed plug-in v4.3.1 in it and I have not had any problems with it. If this does not work for you (like the person above) put the OldPlugin somewhere else.
8 - Open Bridge and the raw images should be raw images and not icons.
I trust this will work for you also.
    Cheers!
