Bridge Ignores .CR2 files in camera, but OK on Computer

I am having a problem using Bridge to see and/or transfer raw files (in .CR2 format) from my camera (Canon EOS20D) to my computer.  When I open the window in Bridge to transfer pictures from my camera to my computer, all it "sees" are any .jpg files that are on the camera.  It does not recognize in any way that I can discern the existince of the raw files.  No icon, no preview, no nothing.
If I use the Canon software that came with the camera to transfer the files to folders on my computer, then Bridge sees them with no problem.  I can browse them, I can open them in Camera Raw, I can open them in Photoshop.  Once they get on the computer, they are fine.
I am using PS CS4.  I have installed the latest version of Camera Raw (5.4).  The computer runs Windows XP Pro, and Windows is all the way updated.
I have tried corresponding with Adobe Tech support who suggested: i) Installing the latest version of ACR.  (They apparently did not read my query telling them that I already had the latest version installed.  This has caused me to lose confidence in them.)  ii) Purging the cache, which I did.
However, the problem persists.
I would be grateful for any helpful suggestions that any of y'all would be willing to make.
Thanks.
John

Even if that would work, of course, the fact that I can't make the transfer

If it works with a card reader it could mean something is wrong with the camera settings.
I don't know the camera so I'll leave it to one of the users here who does.

  • How do I import raw CR2 files from camera into LR5? I get an error message

I'm trying to import raw CR2 files from my camera into LR5. I get a message "Files appear to be unsupported or damaged." I know they are not damaged. Does LR5 support raw files? I can do this in Bridge and it converts them to dng files. This would be ideal for me if both could be done in LR5.

Not sure what the problem is if you say the files re recognized in Bridge? You could test the CR2 files by downloading the free Adobe DNG converter - latest version 8.6 (keep your CR2 originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)and then import the DNG’s. It’s an extra step but I use it all the time to batch process into final folders.
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Adobe Bridge Changed Cr2 Files to CR2.Jpg

I'm so exhausted trying to figure this out! I'm a new Photoshop user. Just purchased it. Imported or opened Canon 40D raw files to see slideshow. I usually copy the original raw file from the cf card to a folder on my external drive. Now I need to go in and edit them in Lightroom 2.5 and I only see a small size ( 256x170) file "IMG_8611.CR2.jpg (what?). Does Adobe Bridge change file formats on its own? This is scary! Are the original cr2 files still located somewhere on the external drive? What's going on here? Also, is there any person to person support at Adobe? This is terrible. Thanks.

In the first post you said you edited the RAW file in Lightroom.  Now you do not mention it.  Where are you editing the file?  If in Lightship I don't believe the normal mode is to generate a XMP file.
When you open Photoshop it does not automatically open camera raw, so confused here also.
The least confusing way to edit is to open Bridge and right click on RAW file, then choose "open in camera raw".  You edit and then click done to save edits, or open image to go to PS.  If you double click image it will open PS and the same ACR window.
You can set up Bridge so that the external drive is a "favorite".  Beware that if you have Bridge set to "open on startup", the external drive may not be recoginzed as Bridge can load before the computer can recognize it is connected.  Disable this function.
You say "I go to the folder and open the image directly into Camera Raw".  Is this a separate window with all the adjustment sliders that is titled "Camera Raw 5.x"?  Once you do your edits here and click Done it saves the edits and puts a little weird circle in upper right corner of thumbnail to show it has been edited.  If you click Open Image it opens it in PS with the edits.
How do you save the picture once you have made your edits, Done, Save, Save As, or ?
You ask "Is there a way to find where the XMP's are and if I can find my original CR2 file in there somewhere? "  As I said in previous post you use Win. Explorer.  It should be in same folder as file, with same name.  NOTE - not all files generate an XMP file, depends on the edit.  Some of the info is written directly to the file.

  • Problem: files on ipod but not on computer- am i gonna lose all my music?

    hi,
hopefully i'm not screwed. i basically had to erase and reinstall everything on my harddrive yesterday. i had my songs backed up on a flashdrive. i synced my ipod with itunes and tranfered purchased songs to the ipod. today, i deleted some songs from itunes and attempted to sync by ipod with my library and got an error message saying that about 200 music files couldn't be found. these are songs that i didn't buy through itunes. i did something i now realize is stupid- i deleted the songs off my flashdrive. i thought once i synced last nite, the songs would have been saved in my 'my music folder'.
is there anyway that i can start over and transfer the songs on my ipod to my itunes library and not lose the songs that weren't purchased through itunes? if i uninstall itunes and reinstall it, will songs on my ipod then get transferred?
    thanks...

*is there anyway that i can start over and transfer the songs on my ipod to my itunes library and not lose the songs that weren't purchased through itunes*
The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • Camera Raw not working/recognising CR2 files - CS5, Mac

I cannot get Camera Raw to work. It worked before but took some fiddling around to get it to work. I am using CS5 on a Mac. My camera is supported by the version of Camera Raw I have and it is the latest update for CS5. Help please.

    Hi there
    Thank you for your questions.
    I am using Mavericks.
    Camera is a Canon 6D.
Camera Raw is 6.7.1.340. According to Adobe my camera should be recognised by this.
This is the message I get when I try to open a CR2 file.
Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information.
Yes, all Readable Documents is selected in the first drop-down menu. Bottom drop-down menu is Camera Raw.
In Bridge the CR2 files appear as white rectangles instead of images.
I realise that I can convert my CR2 files to DNG but from what I have read on Adobe information I understand that this is not a requirment as Camera Raw should work without having to convert every image to DNG first - or am I completely misunderstanding this?

  • Why have my edited CR2 files disappeared from Bridge?

When I edit my CR2 files in Cam Raw I pull many in at once and do my adjustments.  Then I click done and they all go back to Bridge and they show the edited version as adjusted CR2 files.  Then I highlight them and pull them into the export panel for resizing into small jpegs for my facebook page.  That has all changed this week and I have no idea how or why!!!!!!!!!!  Now when I adjust and click done the edited version does not show in bridge and when I use the export panel the unedited version is resized.  I have looked in every preference file and tried everything to get the edited version to show with no luck.  WHY would this be changed???  Is it something I need to reclick???
If someone actually sees this and answers please do me a favor and answer to my email: [email protected]  as I may not be able to find this post again.   This is my first time posting a question...

Hi Ann and welcom to the forum
The operating system you are using makes a difference, but with Windows they will be wherever you saved them to, so long as they saved OK.  Do they appear in the Photoshop > File > Open recent list?
You could try using Save As with a new document and making careful note of the file path, or just use the Windows seach facility from the Start button.
So what Operating System are you using, and have you found those files yet?

  • Recovered CR2 files won't open with CS3

Hey, I need help with this!
I worked in a photoshoot with a Canon EOS Rebel XSi and SD memory; then I had troubles trying to download them because the memory wouldn't let me do it, so I used the 'PC Inspector Smart Recovery' and I recovered all my CR2 files indeed. BUT! some of them won't open with Photoshop CS3, most of them do, but there's just some others that won't open and I really need to get this job done
My camera files always worked perfectly with photoshop CS3, plugins are installed, I really don't know what went wrong.

I am having a similar problem.  I downloaded CR2 files from my camera to my computer and CS3 Bridge will not recognize the files, allow me to open in Camera Raw or open in CS3 Photoshop.  I also stuck the same memory card in a Lexar mem card reader and attempted to download to my Mac in CS4 Bridge and that version of Photoshop and Bridge won't recognize the files either, however the CR2 files do appear, where I can view the thumbnails, in iPhoto.  All original files are still on the memory cards (4 cards worth of wedding photos!).  I've downloaded Camera Raw updates for both cs3 and cs4 on my windows pc and my mac and still no luck.  I'm at my witts end! Help!

  • Canon G9 CR2 File Problems

I'm running into some troubles with this combination of CR2 files from the Canon G9 and using Lightroom 1.3 or Photoshop CS3.
When I import the files from the camera using Lightroom's import function (and yes, I have the 4.3 camera raw update installed), Lightroom brings over both the .jpg and the .cr2 files (so far, so good) but then I run into problems.
First problem: The .CR2 files have improper white balance set on them. catastrophically so, as I'm using the camera for infrared shots and without the original white balanace settinsg taken at the time of shooting the shot is useless. The .jpg's are fine, but obviously lack the full details of a raw file, which I would prefer to work with.
Second problme: When I right click on the .cr2 image in Lightroom and choose to edit it in Photoshop, the result is that Photoshop opens the file as a Tiff image and I never get the opportunity to use the Camera Raw loader settings for the raw image in photoshop, which are fairly important to me.
Third Problem: If I open the image directly in photoshop, it will initiate the Camera Raw 4.3.1 loader (a good thing) but still has the color balance issues. And for an instant when the file loads in camera raw 4.3.1, a triangle warning sign shows in the upper right corner of the picture then dissappears. I have tried using the Adobe RGB, Colormatch, ProPhoto and sRGB settinsg, 8 and 16 bit, all to no avail, I still lose the white custom balance as shot.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated, I've thus far been totally unable to work with raw images from the G9 regardless of what versions of the various software and tools I have loaded.

Hi, thanks once again for responding.
My dilemma is that the final results of an artifically induced white balance through channel switching won't give the same results as the false color image produced when the original white balance is done on-site using the non-IT filtered color metering system of the camera. It can give an approximation, but it will lack in a great many nuances.
IR images taken using the Canon G9 produce correct .JPGs, but the processing of the CR2 files by camera raw is flawed in the way that it is handling the white balance settings in the CR2 it seems. Images produced by other camers such as our Nikon D80 or others that use formats other than CR2 come through perfectly. Only the CR2 images are incorrect. This may be linked to the use of custom white balances instead of standard white balance settings, perhaps something in the file contents identifying which white balance (the camera has approximately eight) is being used and should be processed. Or perhaps the file itself is being incorrectly produced by the camera. Who know, eh?
I know the CR2 format in the G9 is relatively new and full support will come in time, but I'd hoped that it was some obscure setting that could get us back on track. In the meantime, we are using the .JPG images from the G9, which come through correctly processed. But this is sub-optimal, and one of the primary reasons for settling on the G9 was to have the raw images. Afetr all, how many 12MP compact cameras out there produce raw image files, eh? :)
If nothing else, perhaps this conversation will prompt some research and eventually correct processing of CR2 will emerge.

  • Can't import Cr2 files from my Canon 60D into LR5

I took a trip to New Zealand and I shot in Raw +low res jpeg.  I uploaded the files to my little Asus tablet I had purchased right before my trip because I was running out of SD cards.  This is the only place I have quite a few images as I formatted the cards to reuse them.  I have transferred them to an external hard drive with no problem and then to my main PC which has LR5.  It doesn't seem to 'see them' when I try to import.  Any ideas? I tried opening one of the images directly into Photoshop CS6 and then I saved it as a jpeg file - then I was able to import it into LR, but I have 100's of photos and not sure I can do a bunch at a time, but at least all is not lost.  Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

When you say "grayed out" do you mean a gray area instead of a thumbnail as can happen when the monitor profile is bad or do you mean the thumbnail is dim and washed out to indicate an image that cannot be selected as they would be if they had already been imported into the catalog?
You talk about shooting RAW+(low-res)JPG but no where to you talk about what happened to those JPGs.   Did the JPGs remain on the tablet when you transferred things to the external hard drive prior to attempting to import or are they on the external hard-drive, too?  Are you importing them along with the raw files, but have Treat RAW+JPG as separate files unchecked, so the JPGs have become the sidecar file to the CR2s?   The size of the companion JPGs shouldn't matter as far as what happens with the CR2 files when you work with them.  They take up space on the card and the tablet memory but I guess you wanted them so you could review your pictures on the tablet since the CR2 files are not processable on the tablet so wouldn't be visible.
Have you imported your camera's raw files into LR before?  What is different this time from previous times, the source of the files, or the fact the files were on a tablet, or that there were companion JPGs, or the type of import is different because you usually import direct from the card?   What type of import did you do, Add, because the files are supposed to stay on the external drive as the normal place for your images, or Move (or Copy) because the photos end up on an internal drive, normally?
When you open the JPGs in Photoshop, do they first open in Camera Raw or do you not see the ACR plug-in and they open straight in Photoshop?
When you say the saved JPGs out of Photoshop are 1/5th the size, do you mean pixel-dimensions size where a normal 4000x3000 image becomes 800x600, or that the file-on-disk size is of the CR2 files is 25MB but the JPG is only 5MB on disk?  Images don't just become smaller in pixel dimensions without a resize happening, and it is perfectly normal for a JPG file to be much smaller on disk than the original raw file, since JPG files use lossy compression.
The imprecision of terms "grayed out" and "size" is confusing to me.  I worry that somehow you don't have any CR2 files, only small JPGs, or that the CR2 files became corrupted because they were put on the tablet since you've never done that before.  Can you provide an example CR2 file, uploading to www.dropbox.com and post a public download link, here--a file that you don't mind others seeing, just so it can be checked for corruption?

Some pictures have white squares with blue and red diagonal stripes that cover almost the complete picture.
When opening those files I have the same problem in Camera Raw dailogue and even in Photoshop eventually.
I tried to open the same same pictures on another computer with the same version of Bridge and Photoshop but the problem remains the same.
It seems like the files itselves are still ok, because if you open an explorer window the previews of the pictures are all ok. And the pictures' sizes remain the same.
I tried to clear the cache in both programs but it didn't help.
    Has anyone an idea????

First see if a reboot of your PC helps.  If not,
    Resets may be in order:
Photoshop: Press and hold Control - Shift - Alt immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop.  If you get the keys down quickly enough - and you have to be VERY quick - it will prompt you to confirm deletion of your established preferences, which will lead to them all being set to defaults.
Bridge:  Start Adobe Bridge and immediately press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) until the Reset Settings dialog box appears. Select all three options--Reset Preferences, Reset Standard Workspaces, and Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache--and then click OK.
Outdated graphics drivers can also cause display problems. Go to your GPU maker's website and be sure you have the latest drivers for your card model.

  • CR2 files open from one camera, but not the other in CS2

Running Mac with CS2. My camera raw files shot with my lovely Canon 5D open and can be viewed in bridge and in photoshop, but NOT the camera raw from my brand new Canon powershot G9. They are both producing CR2 files. I can see the images in the bridge browser window, but when I double click to open I get a dialogue box that says, "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file." I have the 3.7 plug in installed. Please, some god or goddess of photoshop out there, show me the error of my ways!

    Walt,
I will answer your questions to the best of my ability. But hopefully others who are better at this than I am will offer their help as well. So, here goes.
    1. Everyone has their preferred method of using Bridge. In the Photoshop preferences I have not checked the box to have bridge start automatically. Although I use Bridge most of the time, there are occasions when I don't want to use it. So I prefer to start my Photoshop session by starting Bridge first, and then double-click on an image in Bridge to have it opened in Photoshop. In the Bridge preferences, I have checked the "Double-Click Edits Camera Raw Settings in Bridge", and I like working that way.
    2. I have seen several people comment about having this problem. And occasionally it will develop after you have been using Bridge/Photoshop for a while. The only thing I can suggest is for you to hold down the Ctrl key while you start Bridge. A dialogue will appear that will allow you to reset your preferences. There are three options and you should choose all three. I know, you haven't had it installed very long, but this "could" be the problem. One guy I talked with said that he had to do it several times before it fixed the problem.
    3. You indicated that you downloaded Camera Raw 4(5). What does that mean? Did you download version 4.5, which is the latest version? And, did you follow the installation instructions that were on the download page? The new plug-in must be put in the exact directory specified, replacing the old version that is already there. The old version cannot be put in a sub folder. You might as well get rid of it. You don't need it anymore. And, again, it has to go into the specific folder designated in the instructions. After you have done that, in Photoshop goto Help/About Plug-ins and click on Camera Raw. It should only be listed once, and when you click on it you should get a dialogue that will tell you what version you have installed.
    4. After I installed CS3, when I inserted a card into my card reader I was presented with the normal Windows options. One of the options I was given was to download using Bridge. I chose that option and indicated to always use that option. I haven't had any problems with it since. But if that option isn't there, you can open Bridge and click on the File menu. There is an option to download images from your camera. It has worked well for me.
