Broadband Usage - "unusual" spikes in our usage

In May we received a "warning" email from BT about our usage - and being fairly new to BT broadband I started to investigate the usage meter. As far as I can tell the ONLY way for me to see daily usage is for ME to log on daily and manually record the previous days total.
I called BT and they told me that due to data protection law they are unable to provide me with any detail about our usage, apart from the running total.
Not happy about this I made a complaint, and got put through to a chap who was able to tell me that in the previous week we had 1 days usage of 12GB and another of 5GB. Our totals for the previous 2 monthly were 19GB and 21GB respectively.
Our total for May was about 41GB (i.e. about 1 GB over our contract)
We do not watch TV on line
We do not stream music
We do not "game" on line
We do email, internet searches and download podcasts (and have done this for years).
So the question is why are BT unable to provide ANY detaild data about broadband usage. They are able to record daily usage but why can't I see it?
Has anyone any ideas or suggestions about how to deal with this thorny issue with BT. You wouldn't go to a petrol station and pay for a full tank without knowing how much fuel you'd out it!!
Thanks.

The data protection reference is cobblers. If there was anything in it how would Plusnet (owned by BT!) be able to provide all the detail you need in their usage monitor? Your question should not be why are BT unable to provide more detail, but why are they failing to.
If this is the first time you've exceeded your limit you won't be charged. Quite a few people have questioned alleged increeases in their usage lately and there have been reports of successful challenges to BT. Best thing is to keep an eye on it and report back here if further problems seem to be in the offing.

  • Spike in Data Usage

    Hi
Since updating both my 4S iphones to 5, I've had a huge spike in data usage on ATT.
    My habits haven't changed.
How can I try to determine what is causing the data consumption?  I am getting data over use alerts constantly, even when I am not doing anything on my phone.
Been trying to get help from ATT.
Are there specific features that are culprit for consuming data?
    Thanks
    AS

        Hi Ostaters5,
Data overages are no good! I’m going to show you a way to look at your data usage more closely. Most devices provide information in the settings with Data Monitors, and they’ll give you a much clearer picture. Allow me to walk you through it. Go to settings>cellular>scroll down to use celluar data for:> Please list the applications with the highest GB/MB in order. This will let us know what is using your billed data. You can turn off cellular data, and turn on the option to use the application only on Wi-fi in this same screen.

  • BookmarkDav Client spikes my cpu usage when I start up my computer

Has anyone noticed that the BookmarkDav client spikes the CPU usage when it first starts up? Is this something that can be fixed or is there a problem? Thanks for the help.

It has to startup just like everything else in the system, so it's probably normal

  • Anybody experiencing an unusual amount of data usage? Like there's no way your possibly using that much data?

Anybody experiencing an unusual amount of data usage? Like there's no way I'm using that much data???

Many people complain of this, but depends on if it is a JetPack-type device or a phone.  Usually comes down to a phone turning off its wifi when asleep or idle, or apps running wild in the background, or a hotspot device with many connected devices.

  • How data usage is saved in Current usage / Data   ?

i like to know who does the data usage is saved under Current usage / Data   ?
for example at 3:15 shows i used 110 MB  and about 3:40 shows 5MB
is the 110MB usage  saved as one time use or tru out a x amount time ? and how does Verizon calculate the size of data and time the data was used .
    thank you

Hello there nosferatu2xlc! Thanks so much for using your Data Usage tool at My Verizon. I love that feature. I recommend any customer with a smartphone do the same as you are! The data usage is calculated at the close of connection. So the 110 mb that you show for 3:15 is all data reported to have been send/received by your phone for a browsing session that ended at 3:15. The same is true for the 5 mb later in the day.  We calculate data based on measurement of info we show transmitted by your phone on your line. I hope that helps!

  • Error: Component Usage MODEL Cannot Reference Component Usages

    Hi,
I have a scenario where my main component acts as a place holder for views from several view components, all of which implement a common component interface.
The data (contexts) for all of these views are obtained by context mapping from a common component (model component). Hence, I need to pass reference of model_comp to each of the view comp's through "enter_referencing_mode" done in a method called set_model( ) in each view comp's component controller.
I have taken care not to explicitly instantiate the model in any view comp., but instantiate the model only once in my main comp and pass its reference around.
However, I get a dump "Component Usage MODEL Cannot Reference Component Usages" . The CX_WDR_RT_EXCEPTION is raised in the method ENSURE_NO_REFERENCING_MODE of class CL_WDR_COMPONENT_USAGE.
(If I remove data-binding of any UI elements placed on the view components (i.e, model context values never used), it no longer dumps! But that's not possible.)
    Please help!
    Best regards,
    Adithya

    Hi Sascha/Regina,
Thanks for your replies. As far as re-modelling my application goes, we are too far ahead with this to re-think on the refactoring of model into assitance classes. I will take into account for all subsequent developments.
However, could you please provide me with some tips which could help solve my problem: Model component context is used first as the view is loaded as soon as I navigate to the next step in the Roadmap. I am not instantiating explicitly or having any reference to model component's cotnext in WDDOINIT of comp. controller of any view component.
The code for the set_model method (to pass the model comp's reference around) is as follows:
    method SET_MODEL( )
DATA: l_ref_model TYPE REF TO if_wd_component_usage.
      l_ref_model = wd_this->wd_cpuse_model( ).
      l_ref_model->enter_referencing_mode( model_usage ).
Also, suppose I have two component usages (one for the model comp, one for a custom-built value help comp) in each view, should both be instantiated in the main comp. first and the instances of both be passed around? If so, how do I do this, using the same method -(above)?
    Many thanks,
    Adithya

  • WHERE IS OUR USAGE MONITOR BT

    Hi,
Now this is a COMPLETE RANT!
I am FED UP with my teeth seeing people talk about being threatened by increase of bills or changing contracts to the next product up because their usage is more than the product they have paid into.
For example, BT Bullies Granny , BT Charging for excessive use and wait for it, Went Over Option 1 FUP.....How To Upgrade? All of this when, NO USAGE MONITOR exists on the BT Website.
This really frustrates me because people are being pushed by upgrading to the next option where there could actually be better deals, lets face it, if a product does not work with the client, why continue with that product - move on!  Im sure you would revert back to Heinz Beans compared to Tesco Value Beans a!
Another item that really frustrates me is how BT looks after it's customers, the lack of any compassion and bullying to make sure those who are struggling to pay bills on time get either cut off or phone numbers changed.  Also, increasing direct debit payments which do not match the persons circumstances of calls and line rental, ok maybe one month you spent £2 more than normal, does not constitue an increase your DD from £30 to £75 pcm hay!
BT, you seem to be spitting in our faces, YOU are serving us as customers in a very bad way, WE are trying to advise YOU how YOU can help us, PLEASE LISTEN TO US, give us a USAGE MONITOR, GET RID of the term UNLIMITED, it is not an industry term which includes FUP, TELL US what we are paying for, something easy to understand with NO SMALL PRINT.
LISTEN so we can all be heard!

Think the way you wove the term Granny and blew her allowance should be classified as an offensive remark that sterotypes the older generation with limited resources as a legitimate target for ridicule.
Being old or elderly comes to us all eventually. . .
We all don't have the brain of our youths and this can be distressing. . . as can remarks from youths or the ill-mannered.
well i have a friend who is 73 who spends alot time downloading flightsim planes, and playing on his xbox and internet and mail and ive yet to hear him complain hes gone over his limit.
your age comments have no meaning, since for one its not even the woman used in the example who has posted, shes not technicaly a granny either since it was his mother and bt did not bully her. and where does it sterotype anyone. and what has limited resources have to do with anything, nice try on a posh sounding post though. what we really need to do now is find a 90 year old who downloads 100g xbox demos and music a month who keeps being told hes over his limit and ask him how he feels.
have a look at www.downloads.com they do free stuff for pc and mac and its cnet so its safe.
It is not the case of stereotyping or ageism that is the problem, the problem is BT a large worldwide organisation can not provide a utility to advise its customers there usage of broadband by day month or period, others can provide this, my mobile operator provides this so why not BT!

  • Broadband usage high and jumping in usage

    Hi
I've been with BT for 6 years at my current address and I had this exact problem back in 2014. It is now happening again. - It turned out my on Demand service was being counted to my broadband usage!!
I took up Netflix (as the On Demand servcies being withdrawn) on the 5th of May, I received the You View box on the 8th May and set it up over that weekend. Sine then my usage has jumped, but I  had not realised this until I received an email to say I'd used 6GB of my 10GB allowance.
I checked the usage monitor on 22nd May and my usage was 6.77GB. I telephoned on the 24th May as my usage was showing 7.11GB. I have changed my wireless password and have done everything BT has asked. This morning 6.30am I checked my usage and it showed 9.5GB used! As I've had to come to work I have not been able to telephone you. I've just logged into my account (10.50am) and my uasage is now 10.36GB!!
My average usage is about 3.25GB p/mnth. Nothing has changed except for the new You view box and this weekends usage is impossible! We were away from the house during the day coming home in the evening, only watching some Netflix. It is just myself and my partner. My PC has been turned off since Thursday and my Chrome book was turned on, on Sunday Morning to change my wireless password, then off again. Our mobiles connect to the BT wifi hot spot and not our hub.
I am hoping your going to tell me that something similar is happening and you (BT) are going to fix this and reverse all charges as  I have received an email to say I am now going to be charged for this excessive use. Please help as this is very worrying!

I have started with the BT you view box a few months ago and have taken on Netflix with BT when I took on the contract. Since then my broadband usage has rocketed and is going way over my 20gb usage allowance. However I am not using my laptop or other devices much and in fact less than I have done for some time. The only reason for this must be that the netfix usage is being added to my general broadband usage. In some cases this was adding on 2 and 3 gb per day when no other devices were being used at all . BT had promised to call me and had even sent me a text telling me when the call was coming ....but it didnt happen.  I have now done an experiment for the first week in June were I have not used the you view for netflixs or on demand at all but continued to use my laptop for emailing etc as per normal. this has shown my usage as only 0.23gb. Clearly there is something wrong and the you view box usage is 'leaking' and being counted in my general broadband usage. I am very unhappy about this as I was sold the benefits of using the you view box on demand services and netflix on the basis that its usage did not count towards my bills. I have never had netflix before so there isnt any confusion about it previously being used by me. Niether have I used it on any other device ....its all been through my BT box .....and I dont want to be charged for it. If any of the ondemand and netflix is being put onto my broadband I was obviously miss sold the device in the first place. Whenever I call the customer service helpline I get different answers and am told that someone will call me back ...they never do ...check your CS phone tapes of my calls and you will see.
looking at the community forum I can see that I am far from unique with this problem .
Can someone call or communicate with me to solve this asap it is of great concern to me.

  • Preview eats up CPU usage/sudden spikes

    Hello I'm an owner of MBP 13" 2011 10.7.2
When running Preview to open large pdf files, one of the mdworker processes spikes up to huge CPU usage, as well as Preview process.
Thus, I'm having hard time reading pdf files. Is there something I can do to prevent this?
    Thanks.

It looks like you have more than enough RAM, and your system should be able to handle most documents. But 384MB is quite large; in many cases, authors may choose to chapterize a large document in order to cut down on really large PDFs. For scale, a 900 page PDF book is often no bigger than 35MB.
In short, the graphics haven't been optimized, and you'll have difficulties opening a document like this on a desktop computer.
My suggestion: chapterize upcoming documents (if you can), or save as another type of document in Preview/PDF/Save to Postscript.

  • Why Firefox Has Spikes In CPU Usage And Consumes A Lot Of RAM Since Security Update?

After applying security update 3.6.18 i started having this problem. I had this problem earlier but it only happened after several days Firefox was opened constantly. Now i have this problem several hours later after launching Firefox.
[http://i.stack.imgur.com/PJmH5.png '''Here is a picture of high RAM usage''']
'''[http://i.stack.imgur.com/tjsqt.png Here is a picture of high RAM and CPU usage]'''
    I have Flash disabled.
What is going on? Should i reinstall Firefox 3.6.18?

Have you any particular reason for using an older version of Firefox.
Whilst I rarely use firefox 3.6 now, and do not know the answer I will comment that the now unsupported firefox 4 did have bad memory problems in some cases. Some of those problems were addressed in firefox 5, and others are addressed in Firefox 7, which is due out on the Aurora channel next week.
You could consider upgrading to a newer version of firefox. If you need firefox3.6 only for limited use you could consider using Firefox portable, alongside a newer version of Firefox.

  • Is there an easy way to know which app(s) are causing spike in Data Usage?

I have an iphone 4, but son and daughter have iphone 5s and my wife a lumina.  We all spiked in data usage last month, how do we determine what caused this?  Was it Facebook or Pandora?  Some other app? There must be an easy way to find out. Please advise.  Thanks!

        GV2,
I'm glad Mrhelper was able to shed some light on this for you! In iPhones, the amount of data you're seeing under each app is for the "Current Period." Just above that list you'll see info about the Current Period and Current Period Roaming. This is just an overall snapshot of total data usage for that period of time. The Current Period does not reset on its own, so it will be counting everything from the last time you reset it through now. You can reset it by scrolling to the bottom and tapping on "Reset Statistics."
So, for example, if you reset your statistics 3 days ago and then there's 1GB used under App Store you'll know that over the last 3 days 1 GB of data has been used for the App Store.

  • Unusual BT Wi-fi usage

On my BT Wi-fi status page it says that I've used 23365 minutes, which is equal to 16 days 5 hours 25 minutes.
There has only been 15 days 22 hours 57 minutes so far this month. In the past few hours the counter has been rocketing up a significant amount.
I have not been connected to the BT Wi-fi system for this long either, only a few hours at most.
Can BT fix this issue and reset the counter to the amount of minutes I have actually used?
    Thanks.

  • FAS2240 - Datastore Usage very different to Volume Usage.

Hi,We have a VMware datastore configured on our FAS2240. I'm getting an alert on our monitoring system due to usage of a particular volume. The volume in question shows 86% utilised and the LUN at 97% within System Manager, this is also reflected within VSC. However, the datastore itself, i.e. what VMware is seeing, is only 31% used.My question is, why would there be such a difference between these figures? Is there any way to tell what is utilising this space? There are no snapshots in play.We have other volumes configured in the same way with similar VDI load and there is nowhere near as much difference between these figures. Many thanks.

  • Phone data usage info vs ATT data usage info

I have a 200 MB data plan so I watch very carefully my data usage. The problem I have is that I get different information depending on where I look. I have 3 different sources:
    - iPhone seetings -> Cellular data usage: 6 MB sent / 45 MB received
    - AT&T's website (myATT): ~36 MB of data used
    - Data Usage Pro app (from the AppStore): ~36 MB of data used
Which one is the most reliable? Obviously the last 2 sources match, but then why do I get a much higher amount when I look in the phone settings? I got the phone (iPhone 4s) about 1 week ago, with a new AT&T line, so I assume everything was reset when I started to use it...
What source should I trust? Why so much difference?
    Thanks for any tips!

items downloaded on your computer internet connection will not affect the usage on your iphone data plan.  howver if the applications you downloded have an online componant then that would affect your data plan.
