Broken Xorg after update

After I did system update (pacman -Suy on Sunday 22th from ftp://lysator.liu.se - official repository) the Xorg didn't started I just got the screen:
/etc/profile: line1: n#: command not found
/etc/profile: line1: thennfor: command not found
/etc/profile: line1: dontest: command not found
/etc/profile: line1: thenn: command not found
some gdm-binary[1181]:WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted xxx seconds I had before update
gdm-binary[1181]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory:maximum number of X display failures reached: check X sever log for errors
Before update I deleted the "/etc/profile.d/locale.sh" due to manual at archlinux.org.
My Xorg.0.log is:

I tried to generate and use new xorg.conf with "Xorg configure" but it didn't help. I tried the copy back the deleted locale.sh file, but it didn;t help either. When I deleted the corg.conf, the starting process was successfull in way I got to gdm login window, but I was unable to login due to infunction keyboard and mouse also. Did somebody also have or had the problem like this? Can somebody help?
Thanks

For better investigation I add also "messages.log". I do not have the command "xorgcfg" available on my system. As I understood from "x.org.wiki" the xorgcfg command is just the graphic configuration tool with same function as Xorg -configure.

  • [Solved] Severely broken system after update

I need help with system that doesn't boot after update.
I tried to make pacman -Syu on a system which was not updated since 2010 xmass... probably being overwhelmed by number of issues I did something wrong, but now the system is in a very bad state.
I think that the main issue was glibc update. I followed the instruction to install all other packages before glibc, but every second package was complaining about glibc (although they all updated). Then pacman became broken, but I solved this and finally everything got updated.
Everything looked fine right after update, but now the system is "unable to find root device" on boot.
I tried to boot with recent arch usb stick (cd drive is broken in the computer), but it doesn't boot (reboots right after "loading archiso.img"). I managed to boot with ubuntu usb stick. I chrooted to my arch partition using these instructions:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chroot#Change_root
then, following pacman wiki I reinstalled linux, mkinitcpio and systemd.
It didn't help. The last thing I can think of is to reinstall all packages via chroot. Is there any handy way to do this, taking into account that some packages could have been installed from AUR (I don't care about them at this point, but I wouldn't like this to stop me from reinstalling all other packages)?
    Any other ideas?

It's not a solution since arch installation usb stick doesn't work for me, as I mentioned above. I must either make this installation work, or move to ubuntu (gah!)
    edit:
I managed to boot. After the error message at the beginning I'm left with "you can type exit to continue booting, but it will most likely fail"... it doesn't fail, and system appears to be working normally (well, except some error about consolekit when X is starting, probably unrelated).
Now the question is how to avoid this error message at the beginning...

  • Broken functionality after update (gnome, pam, glib2, systemd, etc.)

I upgraded my system yesterday after going for a month or two without updates and a ton of authentication-related stuff broke. Here are some of the issues/symptoms I'm currently experiencing:
    Seeing this message in journalctl:
    May 22 13:13:50 deepspace1 slim[203]: pam_loginuid(slim:session): set_loginuid failed
Pulseaudio is not started when logged into GNOME; aplay does not list any cards when invoked by my user:
    [mcmlxxxvi@deepspace1 ~]$ aplay -l
    aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
    [mcmlxxxvi@deepspace1 ~]$ sudo aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC662 rev1 Analog [ALC662 rev1 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
When I start pulseaudio manually, it only lists the dummy output.
    USB sticks no longer auto-mount
I had been using GNOME 3 on forced fallback and logging in through SLiM.
I tried to upgrade libreoffice, which made me upgrade glib2 (to 2.36.2-1), which caused some other problems (pnglib, etc.) so eventually I upgraded everything (including kernel, systemd, pam (to 1.1.6-3) and gnome (to 3.8)) without rebooting. A couple of hours later I was suddenly thrown out of my session and saw something about some journaling/logging utility being passed too large a block (cannot find it in the logs at the moment) on the console. I rebooted and after logging in, gnome-session-failed (the "Oh no" screen) was started. GNOME started successfully when I logged in as root.
Googling around, some threads on here and based on the PAM message above, I tried to downgrade glib2 (to 2.36.1-3, 2.34.3-1, 2.34.2-2 and 2.32.4-1), to upgrade pam (to 1.1.6-4, which had appeared in the meantime) and then downgrade it (back to 1.1.6-3 and then to 1.1.6-1).
glib2 downgrade led to nowhere - later versions led to gnome-session-failed, while with earlier ones GNOME would not start at all). Downgrading pam led me to a situation where I received a "Login incorrect" after entering the username (both console & SLiM) which I had to fix through init=/bin/bash .
Following the advice here I cleared the hidden GNOME files and was finally able to log in (default mode, not fallback). Enabling fallback via gsettings (gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session session-name gnome) brought back gnome-session-failed.
So I'm led to believe that I originally had 2 problems: fallback mode, which I read had been disabled, and the authentication problem. I'm currently struggling with the latter and would like help on how to approach the situation.
I'm not sure which logs would be needed for troubleshooting, and I'm still quite clumsy with journalctl, but will provide any logs requested.

You should *never* do partial upgrades.  There is a reason why everywhere you see people saying that "partial upgrades are not supported".
I am not sure how you can be "clumsy with journalctl".  As far as its most basic functionality, it is pretty darn straight forward.  Though that is assuming you are willing to do a quick read of the man page... or even the output of "--help".

  • [Solved] Broken arch after update

Hi. I'm trying to install wine. So I uncommented multilib lines in /etc/pacman.conf & made 'pacman -Syu'. After restart system booting stops at "reached target graphical interface". Temporarily I've disable sddm service, so I can login in tty. However some services and modules can't be loaded still. For example I can't load iwlwifi for wireless and nvidia modules. I also tried to reinstall graphics packages such as bumblebee, mesa, nvidia but it's not helped.
'Dmesg | grep -i error' shows nothing. 'cat /var/log/Xorg.0 | grep EE' chows:

Well, I've loaded fallback image of initramfs. Now it works & show "Linux BooBook 4.0.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Apr 29 12:00:26 CEST 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux". Thank you, guys.

  • Broken ipod after updating!

I updated my daughter's ipod and now it keeps flashing on and off with apple logo. What does this mean? Did I brake it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • [SOLVED] broken libraries after update

I'm getting this error when trying to start akregator:
error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libkontactinterface.so.4: invalid ELF header
When I run the file command on /usr/lib there are several files that are identified only as "data" including the one producing the above error.
I think this started after pacman upgraded a lot of kde libraries a few days ago. At the end of a pacman run, ldconfig gives errors such as:
ldconfig: /usr/lib/libkpimtextedit.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start.
Any ideas on what went wrong and how to fix it would be most welcome.
    Last edited by dan34 (2013-11-09 19:22:16)

Yes, this seems to be one of the few times to use --force, but only for the kdepimlibs installation.  It also begs the question, though, of how those files got there.  Did you install any KDE related software manually?  If not, your package database may have been corrupted, which would leave me wanting to check the health of the disk (fscks first, then smartmontools).
Edit: the incorrect elf type would suggest the former: I suspect some libs were manually installed, but the wrong architecture was used.  This might even happen with some "click here to upgrade" crap on some tools if they were running as root.

  • Multiseat with Lightdm broken after updating Mesa

    Hi,
I've been using a multiseat configuration for months now, and it was working almost perfectly (almost - multiseating is far from being really stable yet IMHO, but anyway).
I updated mesa-libgl a few days ago and confirmed packages replacement, but right after rebooting my second seat didn't work anymore. The display stays black and no login screen shows up, although I suppose a signal is still sent as the monitor doesn't go into sleep mode. The first seat on the other side is working as usual, no difference noted.
In the processes, I can only see one Xorg instance (used by the first seat), when I'm supposed to have tow instances, one for each seat and with different parameters. It's like the second seat is crashing, but I can see no trace of such crash in the logs (kernel.log or everything.log). Even the Xorg.1.log contains all the informations as if the display was running fine.
The day after updating Mesa, I also updated Lightdm but it didn't change anything (I had a brief hope for a moment).
My configuration is the following :
        - Nvidia GTX 760: used on seat0 as dual-head with Nouveau driver (Layout-Main in Xorg)
        - Intel GMA: used on seat1 on single-head with Intel driver (Layout-Aux in Xorg)
I'm using Lightdm with this configuration:
    [LightDM]
    minimum-vt=1
    run-directory=/run/lightdm
    [SeatDefaults]
    greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter
    greeter-show-manual-login=true
    session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession
    greeter-setup-script=/usr/bin/numlockx on
    [Seat:0]
    xserver-command=/usr/bin/X :0 -sharevts
    xserver-layout=Layout-Main
    [Seat:1]
    xserver-command=/usr/bin/X :1 -sharevts -novtswitch
    xserver-layout=Layout-Aux
The Xorg configuration for the seats is divided into two files:
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-serverlayout-main.conf

When I disable the primary seat configuration in Xorg files (I just prevent the file from being loaded), and after I restart Lightm via
    # systemctl restart lightdm
the display shows up correctly on the secondary seat (and not on the primary, which is logical so far). So in the end it seems I just cannot have both seat running at the same time, but individually they work fine.
My logical assumption is that the recent upgrade of the Mesa packages somehow broke this configuration, but I cannot find why and how.
    FYI, here's what I tried:
    - play with Intel drivers options in Xorg (NoAccel, DRI, ...)
    - play with Xorg options on the command line of each seat (-sharevts, -novtswitch)
    - switch to Nvidia proprietary drivers (but here also, only the primary seat works, but that may be for a totally different reason, which is why I used Nouveau ever since I set up this configuration)

Ha! I searched something like that during my investigations, I was wondering if it wasn't about the recent logind changes, but I gave up due to the lack of documentation

  • IGoogle (and perhaps others) broken after updating to 6.0.2 -- broken for ALL versions of Firefox now.

    Hi folks,
Note: I've found a way to post images... here they are...
    [http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j480/_Melk_/iGoogle_Firefox_broken2.png iGoogle Firefox Broken (same in version 5.x, 6.x & 7.x)]
[http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j480/_Melk_/iGoogle_IE9_Working.png iGoogle Firefox IE9 Working (was like this on FF too before last update)]
This is a good one so bear with me, I'll try to be as precise as I can.
I updated FF to 6.0.2 yesterday and since then iGoogle (and perhaps other pages.. not sure on this) does not display correctly anymore.
Most evident is the fact that the links "Advanced Search" and "Language Tools" shown (usually) on the right side of the search edit box, don't show up anymore.
Other changes are the graphics which are used by the gadgets. In IE9 & FF before the update, each gadget showed round corners, not anymore in FF after update. Also, if I try to change the theme, the buttons "Add This" don't show up in FF now.
Now, here's the kicker! I completely removed Firefox from my system, meaning uninstalled it using the remove settings as well. I also deleted my profile folder & the Mozilla Firefox folder after the uninstall. Then I reinstalled version FIVE (5.0) to see if I could revert to the why things were back then, and behold, same problem!! So now, I can't repair my firefox to work properly even if I return to older versions!? wow
Tried system restore to a few days ago, that didn't fix it.
Tried version 5.x, 6.x and even the beta 7.x (all from scratch after uninstalling and deleting the profile folder + program files(x86) Mozilla folder) --- still NO FIX! ack! ;)
Frankly, I'm at my wits end on this one. I usually can repair pretty much anything computer/OS related, but this one has me stumped.
Thanks in advance for ANY help provided.. much appreciated :)
    /cheers
P.S. I also tried safe mode (took the broken FF picture in Safe Mode), but it has the same issues. In other words, I'm now officially unable to have ANY version of Firefox display iGoogle correctly anymore (5.x, 6.x, even beta 7.x). Be it bare bone, with or without addons, etc etc. All this caused by updating to 6.0.2 from 6.0.1.
Note that I've done tons of updates before without any issues. Also been using FF for the last 6+ years I think (been a while ;) )

Turns out that it's iGoogle Styling that has changed! Not a Firefox bug (although there are bugs in the new iGoogle).
The changes to my homepage (iGoogle) happened just as I was updating 6.0.2. So this led me to believe it was a Firefox bug, and since IE9 still shows the OLD style on iGoogle, it reinforced this belief.
After reading up on it on the Google forums, and chatting with a great tech support on Mozilla tech, I realized it wasn't Firefox. So you can dismiss this as a human error ;)
    /cheers

  • Xorg doesn't start after update

After updating this day (my system was last updated at the beginning of July
this year) I have some problem with Xorg. The server just doesn't start, and
the screen is black. I can get back to the console with Alt-F1.

Edit (08.08.2008): All right, don't bother answering this question anymore. The problem is no longer important. This topic can be closed, since it won't be solved.
(I think it was caused by some error during copying files while updating my system.)

Only question left is:What are the correct permissions for /tmp since I'd like to set them back to default.

  • Paste from illustrator now broken after update

after the latest update of Pages 08, i can no longer paste symbols from Illustrator CS. certain parts of the symbols are broken up after Pages gives me an error message reading: The media can't be used because you don't have access privileges, because it has no content or is corrupt.
    worked fine last week.
    thanks,

See this discussion to see if it helps. iPhone 4 Message:SIM Required (in phone that has no SIM card slot)  While it was originally for the iPhone 4, I have seen a couple of Verizon 4s customers also post. • [SOLVED] After xorg-server update backlight is not behaving

After updating a Thinkpad S540 today the system goes into dim backlight level for the screen during the initial stages of the boot process, and recovers to normal brightness after the password has been entered in the KDM greeter and the user logs in to KDE. Running KDE the brightness behaves normally, but when the system shuts down after logging out from KDE the text output during shutdown does into very dim mode again.
The brightness parameters when logged in to KDE look fine.

Booting with kernel parameter systemd.restore_state=0 gives a normal brightness throughout. So this must have something to do with the saving of the brightness parameters by systemd. The clue is in the journal log above:
systemd-backlight[200]: Saved brightness 11 too low; increasing to 46.
I wonder how I can get systemd to reset the stored value which is too low to be sensible?
Has anyone seen similar behaviour and if so is there a proper fix instead of the workaround in the bug I have filed upstream as below?
    Filed arch bug https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/41390
    and upstream at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81884

@iskandr , @ens  about backlight and fn keys:
keys work (I checked by xmodmap) and backlight control works, but only by:
    /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
old scripts which used for example:
    /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    stopped works.
I wonder if this is a BUG or new feature? Where are handlers in clean Linux / systemd responsible for action to acpi keys which controlls backlight? ( I checked and it's not acpid /etc/acpi/handler.sh - acpi keys backlight controll works without it ). (moreover, acpid is external application as well as xbacklight, gbacklight etc... It should work OOTB, without these applications and also in the console.)
to turn on old interface as before 3.16 try add
    video.use_native_backlight=0
    to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line in /etc/default/grub  ( remember about grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg )
    it turns on old interface:
    ls -l /sys/class/backlight/
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 08-15 13:36 acpi_video0 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/backlight/acpi_video0
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 08-15 13:36 acpi_video1 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video1
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 08-15 13:36 intel_backlight -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/intel_backlight
and everything works again as before 3.16.
    http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver … 0d681c171e
This is another BUG (also occurs to my laptop). I see that the code is ready, so wait for a fix update.
I wonder also whether and where to file a bug report (about fn keys + backlight control).

  • [Xorg] crash after updating

    Hi all,
after updating arch, i've encountered a really strange issue.
Xorg doesn't want to start anymore. Or should i say, it starts but crashes within a second...
I thought it came from xfce4-svn (my current wm). But i've also tried to use fvwm and the same problem occured...
Finally, i've tried to installed blackbox and after startx command, it seemed to work........ until i tried to launch firefox within a terminal (unable to find a shortcut ), and the same crash occured... enlightenment seems to have the same behaviour (but a mouse move is enough to make the xserver crashing)
I've tried to change my xorg.conf file but it didn't solve the problem at all (so i restaured the previous)...
I then decided to re-install both xorg and xfce4-svn, but it neither worked...
Having tried all the solutions i could imagine, i post there, hoping that someone would be able to solve the problem out
PS : sorry for possible english mistakes (i'm french )

  • After updating to Firefox 4, Arabic letters are broken when using punctuations.

In Arabic writing, signs (''' َ ّ ً ِ ٍ ْ ُ ٌ''' ) are used as punctuations with letters. After updating to Firefox 4, a space is created after every punctuation. words become broken.

    Problem solved.
    1- Start Firefox 4 browser.
    2- Type in Address Bar : '''about:config'''
3- It will tell you : '''This might void your warranty!'''
    4- Press : '''I'll be careful, I promise!'''
    5- Type in Filter Bar : '''gfx.font_rendering.harfbuzz.level'''
    6- Change Value to '''1'''.
    7- '''Done. '''

  • App Store broken after updates

    OSX 10.9.5, App Store Version 1.3 (201.7)
After updating some software, the App Store broke, looks like the CSS is not loading. Furthermore, "Some updates could not be installed automatically" - the App Store icon shows "1" in red circle, in it the Update part also shows "1", but clicking on Updates icon displays nothing.
I've sign out of App Store, and after than i cannot sign in back (connection failed).
Also, the suport page in safari looks broken too:
    Please advise

Following the updating of a number of iPad apps on my MacBook Pro today (April 18) I had EXACTLY the same problems occur as mzagor described in an earlier post. Everything seems identical in my screen displays to the screen shots shared by mzagor, with the addition in my case of the iTunes Store not loading and throwing up error message windows stating that,  "iTunes can't verify the identity of the server "init.itunes.apple.com". The certificate for this server is invalid. ..."   7 additional similar certificates follow as iTunes attempts to log in to other Apple servers.
I spent over an hour on the phone with an Apple tech, not knowing that others were having a similar issue as I. We almost got to the point of reinstalling Mavericks - but I balked at that. The well meaning tech suggested that this could be a hardware issue and that I should have the computer checked at an Apple Store (90 minutes away).
    HOWEVER!  on this same MacBook Pro, I can, using a DIFFERENT User login (which had been previously created) successfully log into;
    -  the iTunes Store,
    - the App Store, and get to
    - the Apple web site Support section through Safari,
without any issues or error messages and with the each of the screen displays showing up as they should. I can log into my Apple ID account without issue.
It would appear that there is a connection to the stated difficulties I am experiencing, with the act of updating apps using the App Store in Mavericks (v10.9.5)
Hopefully, the issue will be acknowledged and a solution will be found and shared quickly.
