BT Infinity Variable Speed

I had BT Infinity installed on 27 July, previously no problems with BT Broadband. After 10 day bedding in period the speed was variable, and on occaision dropped to below 1 Mbps, although it could provide 37+ Mbps for a lot of the time. BT Engineer attended on 14 August and re-installed it, providing a new socket in the upstairs room where my main PC is sited. Line tested before engineer left and no problems reported, and no internal interference reported.
Problems persist, and speeds still drop to below 1 Mbps on occaision. Yesterday I recorded a download speed of 0.12 Mbps (Speedtest.net), which is both absurd and also less than you could have got with dial up in the 1990s. The PC concerned is connected by ethernet cable to the HH3. Bizarrely (and worryingly) my wireless laptop was reporting a download speed of 37.50 Mbps at exactly the  same time as the PC speed dropped. How can a wireless connection be faster than an ethernet connection? The speed drop can happen at any time of day, yesterday it happened at around 3.00 pm, other times it has happened in the evening.
I resolved yesterday's problem by going into the Home Hub Manager and disconnecting the hub, and then reconnecting it. So far so good, although the laptop reported a download speed of 17.50 Mbps this morning, back up to 36+ this p.m. PC is currently running at 36+ Mbps. Get the impression that this is not the end of my problems.
Interested to know if anyone has any idea what the problem might be, or if anyone has had similar problems which they have now resolved.

If you are on a HomeHub 3B, there was a firmware bug that meant wired connection sometimes went absurdly slow.
Go to the HomeHub web interface and check the firmware version (at the bottom of each page).  If it says "Software version V100R001C01B031SP12_L_B | Time & date 14:57 22/08/2012" you've got the new version, so that can't be the issue.    If it says something pretty simular but with 'SP09' in it, your firmware still hasn't been updated; when it is things will probably improve.  If it says something very different, you've probably got a different Hub.
I don't think there is any way you can hurry along the firmware upgrade; it's automatically pushed out by BT.  Do make sure the modem and router are up and connected all the time, including at night, as that is when they push out the upgrade.

  • Copy and Paste Variable Speed Ramp Curves?

Is there any way to copy and paste variable speed ramp curves from one shot to another.
I've got a rough cut with lots of speed ramps, and now I have to conform renders that came back from Color (pre-prepped with out ramps) to the offline with the same frame ramps.
I can't seem to do it any other way than by eye match, which is less than great.

Right click a clip in the Timeline that has the settings you want to transfer. Choose Copy.

  • Can't select "Variable Speed" for Still Image Motion

I am using FCP 5.1 to add motion to still images. I've placed my still images on the timeline and added the appropriate keyframes in the Motion tab of the Viewer to Scale, Rotate, and move the stills on screen to my liking. But the speed is locked to "Constant," and I want to change that.
Specifically, am rolling a still image on-screen, freezing it in the middle of the screen a few seconds, and then rolling it off-screen. Doing this is easy: I just add a keyframe and type in the off-screen coordinates, then add another keyframe and type in coordinates somewhere on screen. But I want to vary the speed that the image rolls on-screen, so it moves on-screen quickly but then gradually slows down until it finally stops (freezes) in the middle of the screen.
Unfortunately, the "Setting" popup menu under "Time Remap" in the Motion tab of the viewer is grayed out and locked to "Constant Speed" (and yes, my still image clip is indeed selected and being displayed in the view). I cannot figure out how to unlock that popup so I can select variable speed.
I can choose Variable or Constant speed just fine for any imported "video" clips -- only still images are locked to Constant for some reason. Is this just a feature limitation of FCP 5? Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.

Why so much sarcasm in this FCP forum, Studio X?
Yes, it was in the manual, which by the way is quite large. And I didn't say how long it took me to spot that in the manual either -- a long time. I didn't spot it the first time I had read through that section (yes, I had read it before). And the fact is, you didn't know it either, otherwise you may have cared to point it out (for not only myself, but for others reading this forum too).
I participate in numerous other forums on other sites. Many times, people ask questions that are very simplistic to me -- I know the answers and I know those people putting forth the questions could easily have looked up the answer. Nevertheless, I take time to be helpful to others. For truly, some day I may be in their shoes, lacking time to read every part of every manual out there.
I am therefore thankful to those who likewise respond in a tactful manner to my queries, with the productive aim of helping others rather than condemning them. Thank you, David Harbsmeier, for being consistently positive and very helpful in this forum!

  • Set variable speed?

    Help!
I am having trouble plotting variable speed in Final Cut Pro.
I go to 'time map' and look at setting keyframes to control speed but it seems to be really imprecise and random. There doesn't seem to be a way to set precise values eg. setting the clip to ramp from 0% to 400% or down from 100% to 50%. Or even set 1000% to 3000%.
And when i plot keyframes in 'time map' it doesn't seem able to tell what the speed value is that's being set.
    Any ideas?

Chances are you'll need to export out the sections of a clip that you want to remap.
FCP will look at the entire clip to extrapolate the remapping.
IOW, if you're trying to remap a :30sec section of a 20 minute clip, FCP will apply it's remapping to the entire 20 minutes.
So just export out your :30 (with a bit of handles for good measure), bring it back in and remap that.
Post back if it doesn't fix it for ya.

  • Variable speed in FCE

Can one create a variable speed clip? Say start a 100@ at the beginning of the clip and end at 75%?

No, the ability to keyframe speed is a function reserved for Final Cut Pro. However, you can try using Piero's [Time Remap|http://web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/PieroFFCE_Effect/TimeRemap.html] filter to get a similar effect.

  • Error Communicating with Camera (only during variable speed playback)

I have my camera, a Sony DCR TRV480 plugged in via firewire and am playing on the camera and watching on the monitor. This works fine unless I use the "variable speed playback" option on the camera to slow down the video. Then Imovie goes blue and gives me the "error communicating with camera" message.
My videos are way too numerous and the details of fine motion too important for importing and then playing back on slow-motion to be a practical option, so please do not suggest that.
What I need is to see in Imovie what I see on the Cameras LCD.
Any ideas if its a problem with Imovie or related to limitations of firewire or the camera output or what?

Obviously, when you slow down the video, the camera isn't sending a DV compatible signal through Firewire. Since iMovie is designed to handle only DV, iMovie goes blue.
There is nothing you can do about that.
You may try "JES Deinterlacer", which produces better slow motion than iMovie. It's free.

  • Exporting variable speed slo mo to Motion for optical flow, how?

    Greetings,
I have FCP 7 and Motion 4. I am new to using Motion. I want to either export a variable speed clip from FCP to Motion and add the optical flow feature, or build a variable speed change in Motion, but I can't figure out how to do either!
The 20 second clip is in reverse-slow-mo, and progressively gets slower (from -38% to -4%) as set in FCP using keyframes. When I "send" the clip & it opens in Motion, the in-out points aren't recognized, (the whole unedited clip shows up) and when I set the timing to "variable" in the inspector, (under "timing", for time remap) the clip disappears in the timeline altogether.
I've also tried to create a QT of the clip as 100% but in reverse (just to have less to build in Motion) but I cannot figure out how on earth to use the graph in Motion (under time remap, variable speed) to create a variable speed change to progressively slow down. This is the key issue for me-- how to create variable speed change in Motion??
I tried one other thing in Motion, the "add behavior", and added "Speed Change", couldn't figure out this method either-- how to make clip progressively slow down, and also how to apply the optical flow to that speed change (seems optical flow only works with time remap method?) Any help would be greatly appreciate.
    AKJ

Although it does occur, the media isn't ALWAYS mangled... did you try workflow 1 above?
As far as I can tell from your description, baking the speed change in before sending to Motion is not going to work as the clip will already be retimed.
I agree, changing versions mid project is a bad idea. When faced with this recently, I bought a $50 500gb hard drive, installed Leopard and the new version of Final Cut Studio onto it, booted into that drive, opened up a COPY of my project in the FCP7 and did what I needed.
I found no issues, so just continued in FCP7. However, if I did find issues, I would have done only what I needed the new version for, then rebooted back into the drive with FCP6, opened my original project, then imported the results.

  • FCP7  Variable Speed Dialog

I noticed on watching a Final Cut video of someone doing a variable speed change, that they had "Ease In" & "Ease Out" in the speed dialog box. (command J).
However, I only seem to have "Start" & "End" on mine with icons showing different curve (ease in/out) angels.
    Why is this?
    thanks.

  • Variable speed question

I'm trying to do something that seems pretty simple and can't figure it out even after reading over the manual several times and searching the forum.
i want a clip to start at 100% and gradually slow to 50%. in so doing, i want the duration of the clip to extend from say 10 sec. to 15 sec (i want the same in and out points, with a gradual speed change). how do i gradually slow a clip without being forced to speed up another part of the clip?
    -matthew

In the Motion/Time Remap tab of the viewer try to change the green line to something like this: Variable Speed 100-50:
    1. move the cursor over the 2nd point at the end of the light grey area (OUT point); the cursor becomes a small crosshair; right click on the point and select Smooth.
    2. drag the blue dot (Bezier handle) that just appeared, down so the light blue line is no longer horizontal, but takes a direction midway between horizontal and that of the virtual segment connecting the 1st (bottom left) and 2nd (top right) point. Now the line has a shape of a long S.
    3. drag the 2nd point (the Bezier handle should follow without changing shape) down at roughly 2/3 rd of the graph, so it should resemble the picture in the link above.
Why all this? point 1. allows to create and control a curve at the clip OUT point; point 2. changes its default speed to an approximation of speed = 50%; finally point 3. slows down the central part of the clip so that the overall speed dynamics is what you are looking for....
    Easy ?
Well I believe that using my suggested free Time Remap plugin is much easier... just install it and follow the instructions in my previous answer above and in the download web page. But I'd like also to know your opinion.
    Thanks

  • Variable speed on Audio and Video

I see other people have this problem but I can't find the solution. It's occasional buzzes on the speakers when I'm watching a video. The mouse momentarily freezes--fraction of a second--and the video jumps. Sometimes the busses are pretty quick and have a slightly different tone.

Have already phoned BT about the issue the first time, when they told me to reset the modem, this was despite the service not having been active for 10 days & I was under the impression that you are supposed to leave it to acheive best speed. I have saw the connection wirelessly get about 63Mbps down & 18/19Mbps up for several days at a time.
The problem seems to be, its running at a speed where browsing is generally always fast enough. I am only catching that the connection speed is essentially half of what it should be when I run speed checks via several speed checking websites including BT's own.
I have read the problem of Christmas lights, & at least in my home for now, I can eliminate that as the cause. I don't have any Christmas decorations/lights up just now. Just wondering if there is anything that could explain why I am getting such low download speeds, but the upload remains on Infinity 2 levels, when previously I know the connection can run a lot lot faster.
Any help advice would of course be greatly appreciated.

Just restarted my Home Hub 5 & this is the result from the internal Hub manager.

Not quite the dizzy heights of 70Mbps I've seen before, a little improvement which I've also saw before upon a restart/reset. Just wondering what the issue is with the speed dropping. When I have BT Broadband with the Home Hub 3, I never had any issues with speed, it connected & was rock solid. Already regretting upgrading to BT Infinity 2 as when you don't seem to check the speed you are getting, it seems to drop. Only noticable when you actually run a speed check to see if you are actually getting what you are paying for.
Surely I shouldn't need to keep resetting/restarting my Home Hub 5? I know its bad for the connection & to be honest I think its an issue with BT's new installation of FTTC cabinets in my area. The engineer changed my telephone socket face plate over, so its a filtered socket at the main line. No other phones in the house have filters on them as they are no longer needed, so I'm just looking for answers as to why I'm seemingly not getting anywhere near the speed I am paying for (I know with the internet speeds can vary, but its been twice now in about a month I've caught this connection running at just over 30Mbps, when its happily ran before at nearer 70Mbps).
Hopefully the further tests/results can shed some light on this for someone more knowledgable.
Thanks again for the replies so far & of course for any further help/advice with regards this issue.
