BT Option 3 & 'Fair Usage'?

have lodged a complaint about this - Option 3 states 'unlimited broadband', and the only reference to any limitations is the phrase 'subject to network management'. This was part of the package sold to me over the phone as a replacement for my existing plan given my family are heavy users and i was regularly being billed for over-use on the previous deal. No mention was made then of a 100GB limit per month, no action has been taken seemingly by BT to slow down my speed, I received no email warning me about this, and there's no mention of 100GB in my contract nor anywhere on the website, even on the fair usage page. In fact, the only network management I can see is someone charging me 40 quid on my last bill.
Rang up before Christmas and told by BT adviser that the charge was incorrect as I was on unlimited and would be taken off the bill. No it wasn't.
Rang last night to lodge complaint - dept closed at 8.05pm, even though website states it's 9pm.
Compliants rang my mobile today and didnt leave a message.
Rang this evening, to be told of the 100GB limit (does 300GB apply to Infinity?) - a limit on an unlimited plan? Is my usage unfair (two teenagers in house!)? Why the air of mystery about these figures?
Anyone else feel misled?

300gb applies also to total broadband option 3

  • Fair Usage Policy On Total Broadband Option 3?

I know the usage on BT Total Broadband isn't actually unlimited and it has a fair usage policy. This used to be 100GB but since BT Infinity came in I can't seem to find the policy on BT's site. Has it changed?

    Hi.
The 100GB figure has never been on the fair use policy site, and neither does the new figure of 300GB appear (it's been that since middle/late August).

  • Fair Usage - but how do you tell??

Yesterday morning I had an automated email from BT saying that I was up to 80GB d/l for May, and that my speed would be throttled if I went over 100GB. I'm on Option 3, and this is the fair usage policy kicking in. This morning I had another email saying that I was over 100GB! So, I spent 1 hour on the phone today trying to find someone in BT who could tell me how the 20GB was racked up in a day. No chance! Nobody seems to have a record other than some sort of cumulative ticker. Yes I can download a broadband monitor (which I actually did after the first email), but if it's at odds with what BT says where are you then if they don't have detailed records? Records on the router are pretty useless although show since rebooted on Monday:
    Connection time
    3 days, 04:48:24
    Data Transmitted/Received (MB)
    915.9 / 1986.5
So, about 2 GB, NOT 20. I'd challenge anyone on an 8 meg line to actually get enough speed to actualy d/l 20GB in a day!! And no, no one's broken in to my wifi connection.
I'm really annoyed with BT now and wished I hadn't swapped from Nildram, who had records online right down to your last session.
    What now?

    Hi.
This is the massive problem that BT fails continually to answer. The initial email only says that you have exceeded 80GB, it could actually be 99.5GB if the user had got say 20GB a previous day. This omission is appalling in my view and needs correcting immediately, as users are not given accurate figures. As can be seen by all the folk posting on this topic, the belief is that the user has possibly just surpassed 80GB.
They have said that there are no daily figures, I challenge this to be completely incorrect and false, otherwise people would not have received emails on 2 consecutive days as the OP above.
To the moderators, I ask again - please can you tell us how the data is added up on a per user basis. When is the system polled (it is *clearly* daily at least, otherwise you need to explain how these emails could have been sent).
I've also said before that I believe an email should be sent when 50GB are reached, this should be very easy to implement.
Just for info, a continuous download of 400KB/s (e.g. on a line in excess of 4Mbps) - will result in 20GB in about 14.5 hours.

  • Slow broadband. Fair usage exceeded??

    Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can help me.
I am on BT option 3 and had no idea that they had a fair usage policy until I recieved this E-mail -
    Dear Customer,
We thought you'd like to know that your broadband usage in April is now above 80GB.
In accordance with our Fair Usage Policy, and to protect the online experience of all our customers, if your monthly broadband usage goes over 100GB, we'll restrict your broadband speed at peak times (typically this is between 5pm and 12am, but these times may change depending on the demands on the network) to 1Mbps for 30 days.
Please note: your service won't be affected in any other way - we'll restrict only your speed, not the amount you can upload and download.
We'll email you again to let you know if your usage exceeds 100GB. For more information please see our Fair Usage Policy.
Since then my broadband has been running at a snails pace. It is now 00:30 and running the BT speedtest at speedtester.bt.com I get this result:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 446 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-500 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :4160 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 500 Kbps
    Why?
I used to get speeds of 5-6mbps and now I'm getting this? What does it mean "The acceptable range of speeds is 50-500 Kbps"??
I want my fast connection back.
Yes I over downloaded this month (mostly due to streaming HD movies on zune) but the e-mail states I will only be throttled at peak times. Its nearly 1 am and my connection is terrible!! The only source of TV in my house is the sky player on the xbox and it wont even connect. Its been like this for days now. If anyone can help I would be much obliged.
    Thankyou.

Hi Legion, when did you reveive this email ? It says April in the text, it's now almost June.
Have you checked other email accounts (including any spam folders via webmail) - in case the 100GB throttle email has been received. The email does say "typical peak period" - what does your connection test say this morning ?
Note that the IP profile says 500, it could be a coincidental line problem glitch. Give your router a power cycle (close the connection via the router login, power down, wait a few minutes, then power up). See if anything with regard the profile has altered. Even so, it can still take a couple of days for the speed to increase ....
BT Mod support, this whole thing needs sorting out asap. The email does *NOT* give any useful detail, just "over 80GB" - what does that actually mean ? I'll keep saying it until something is done - change the wording and put the actual usage and date/time reached in the email. Give the user daily figures. Also implement an email system gviing the user notice when 50GB is reached (again with exact usage at a date/time). Put 100GB in the FUP documentation, so that people are aware of this figure. It's not a secret any more.
It's simply not good enough these days with the ever increasing usage and reports of people like Legion.

Is the Fair Usage Policy still 300gb?
The reason I ask is that I've just checked and I'm at 294gb up until 23:59 on the 27th yet I haven't received any speed restriction warning emails this month when you usually get a mail at 240gb.

Re: BT TO SCRAP 300GB LIMIT!.
    on 08-03-2011 16h27
    Hi everyone
Yes, this is true! BT Total Broadband and BT Infinity customers will benefit from the removal of Fair Usage Policy (FUP) controls when they begin to be removed from April 2011. Once removed, heavy user customers will be able to download/stream as much as they wish without having their speeds restricted.
BT will remove the FUP controls currently applied to customers with ‘atypical’ usage. Today atypical users are restricted at 300GB usage and account for less than 0.5% of the BT customer base. BT will not target any individuals with restrictions based on usage levels. However, we still have traffic management policies that will restrict certain applications / protocols, such as P2P, when the network is busy.
As BT continues to invest in the network and network bandwidth we can now remove these restrictions and ensure the experience of the wider customer base.
(Note that charges will still apply for going over limits on BT Total Broadband Options 1&2 and BT Infinity Option 1 but traffic will not be managed.)
    Thx

  • Extremely Unhappy With the Fair Usage Policy

Can someone please answer me this, what is the point of having a 20mbps unlimited connection when there is infact a cap of 100gb pm? It's such a rip off my blood is boiling!!!
I've gone over the limit apparently and had my internet connection butchered as a result. The assistant on the phone said it's a "slap on the wrist" I seriously thought what an unprofessional cow and wanted to tell her to f*** off if I'm honest. I don't expect such rudimentary terminology to be used on me when I'm a paying customer, it's outrageous.
Now I read the fair usage policy and find out why my BitTorrent speeds have been so terrible, even before the recent capping of my speed. On a well seeded torrent (2000+ seeders) in a fully port-forwarded uTorrent I am achieving 30KBPS. After midnight they improve but still only averaging around 300KBPS. They throttle P2P as part of the draconian policy! Use GLASNOST (google it) to see what horrible things they are doing with your P2P!
Can someone explain to me how you justify limiting a so called "unlimited" bandwidth at a rate that is only 60GB more than your capped packages? This is clearly false advertising and your fair usage policy is the worst I have ever encountered. Either this is resolved or you can forget it, I'm cancelling my subscription, you will not get another penny out of me, and you can take it up with my lawyer.

They say its not limited as you are only crippled during peak hours and can down as much as you like in the remaining hours **bleep**

  • Fair usage

The fairly well hidden group calling fair usage policy should be amended, as it does not state in there than a premium member, who gets an allowance of 600 minutes a day, will be charged minutes even if they are not the one who makes the original call.  As will all other premium members who happen to be in the same call.
For instance, a 10 person call, 9 premium members, 1 non premium member.  The non premium member makes a croup call, they are charged nothing at all for that call, but ALL 9 premium members will have their minutes used up in that call.
If that call happens to last a total of 600 minutes, including redials after the 4 hour limits are reached, then ALL 9 premium members will have used up their daily allowance and will be unable to make any group calls for the rest of that day.
Meanwhile that non premium member can continue to make calls to others who have premium using up their minutes.
Skype is denying that minutes are used up for receiving calls, but it is happening time and time again to my friends and myself.
Skype, what is the point of people getting a premium account if they know someone else who has one?
9 people could all be paying for the same call. (10 if all 10 happen to be premium)
Nowhere in the FUP's does it mention that all premium members in a call will be charged minutes, regardless of who makes the call.

Thank God there is no limit. I have dealt with Direcway's satellite Internet fair use policy. The service is useless for 24 hours after reaching 250 MB of downloads and data. I hope that we don't end up with a FUP someday.
You can watch YouTube streams all day long etc.

    Hi,
My Fair Usage Policy - 6 hours per day is about cross the limit. Is there any ways to reset it before GMT 0000hrs

    Unfortunately no
Otherwise if everyone could reset it on their own then there is no point for the restriction.

  • Fair usage policy

Does BT`s fair usage policy work both ways?? In the months when i dont use  Broadband as much, why isnt this discounted off the months when i do? Surely on a fair usage policy this should apply!

  • Received" Fair usage policy violation warning" ema...

I just received an email from [email protected],and the subject was Fair Usage policy violation warning. This is ludicrous!
Basically the email says that after spying on my account, well they used the term"monitoring" which is ridiculous. they came to the conclusion that I was abusing the fair usage policy.
    Firstly I felt that my personal privacy was violated by being spied on by Skype;
Secondly , the package I bought was 10000 mins phone to call worldwide, the reason why I purchase this particular package is becoz I was looking for a pair of Valentino lady heels, in order to have a bigger chance in finding them, I would have to call up as many stores as I can. And since this is what the package offers,I don't see what's wrong with me calling all the boutiques and department store branches. What I don't understand is how could calling stores in different locations has been judged as abusing fair usage policy?
This just became very personal, also I think what Skype did and the email going thru length to explain their suspection is absolutely rude and absurd.
I demand that Skype should stop violating SKype user's personal privacy and spying on their accounts. There're so many software out there right now, which would probably offer more service and respect for the consumer, and I'm sure Skype will lose more users if they keep on spying on our accounts.
And I would really love to contact Skype customer service team over phonecall or email, unfortunately I've looked through SKype entire website, and there's no info related to that. If anyone knows how to contact Skype,do share please. I'll really appreciate that.
    Thanks in advance!

I am using Skype premium Credit which allows me to make calls from my Mobile and Laptop to make unlimited calls to 50 countries. Sometime my wife uses my laptop to make call to my home country as well. Recently she went to Bangladesh and tried calling me from there few times. She came back two weeks ago and now nobody uses it from outside Australia.
But last week I received the similar emails from Skype like yours but I am not sure what they are identifying as fair use. I have read the fair use policy and I didn't do anything that is contradicting the policy. I have tried to get support related email address from Skype web but failed. Is there anyone who knows any contact info so that we can raise the issue with?
Another friend of mine was saying that first he received an email from Skype warned him of fair-use violation who is on a 600min per months subscription but hardly use few hundreds min and his service has been terminated temporarily the next day.
So if someone cal tell us what is going on and why they are doing it.

  • Skype terminated because of fair usage policy

    Skype team,
I got a notification today morning that because of unfair usage my skype Id would be terminated and I would no longer be able to use the unlimited India calling option. I have been a user of Skype for the last 2.5 yrs and there is nothing absolutely that I would do or have done to violate the policies of Skype.
This is the only means of communication with my family in India and if this is being revoked I would be helpless.
Also I have a Skype credit of 31 USD. Would like to know what would happen to that?
Thank you in advance and I would wait for your response eagerly.
    Regards,
    Vignesh

Hi and welcome to the Skype Community,
Please keep in mind that our subscription fair use policies do not allow a subscription to be shared amongst multiple users, e.g. you should not give your Skype password to someone else to use your subscription. If you haven't done that I'd recommend to change your Skype password ASAP.

  • Fair usage policy yet again - the latest interpret...

    Like many others, I found what was on BT's web site concerning FUP quite unclear in parts, particularly the paragraph that reads;
If you exceed your usage allowance, you'll be charged for additional usage in units of 5 gigabytes (GB), at £5 per 5GB. Charges will apply from the second month you exceed your allowance and will be shown on your BT bill.
The confusing part was the reference to being charged from the second month.
Now, before the terms and conditions were changed last year it was possible to exceed usage in month one and, providing you didn't exceed usage in the next month, you wouldn't be charged. There would be no charges unless you exceeded your allowance in two consecutive months. Apparently, that is no longer the case and the reference to charges applying from the second month refers to the month the charges will appear on the bill.
Now, you will be charged for any month and all subsequent months that you exceed your allowance.
However, and I can find no reference to this anywhere on the web site, you are allowed to exceed your allowance once each year without charge. This runs from January to December but after one month over the limit, you'll be charged for every month you go over.
How did I find this? By spending 40 minutes on the 'phone, 30 of them with an exceedingly patient call centre lady who didn't quite understand it either then, after being quite insistent, speaking to a manager who apparently had to be dragged out of one of those meetings that they are always in when you try to get a query escalated!
He's promised to get the 'off-line' team to look into getting the FUP page on the web site updated but I shan't hold my breath.
To be fair to BT, although their overseas call centres come in for some stick, I've no problem with them and, as on this occasion, can usually get the information I want using nothing more than politeness and patience. Well, why not? Can't be an easy job sorting out people like me!

    Or maybe not...
    Further developments.
As it happened, I did go over my usage allowance last month (by a very annoying 0.01GB!) but wasn't particularly concerned as I'd already been assured that I wouldn't be charged if I did go over that month.
Imagine my surprise to get an email today telling me that I was to be charged £5 for that 0.01GB of overuse.
Well, I was only on the 'phone for 38 minutes this time and have now got another interpretation which, on the evidence available, seems to be how this works.
The system now is, you get one warning and after that you'll get charged. No one warning before being charged in each 12 month period, just one chance and that's it for life.
Now I don't have a problem with there being rules about this, let's get that straight, but it would be nice to know what they are and I defy anyone to find that out from BT's web site and even calling them doesn't appear to guarantee a correct answer.
The supervisor I spoke to this time promised to pass the problem on to those who look after the web site but I shan't be holding my breath but if I feel in danger of going over my allowance in the future, rest assured I'll make quite sure it's for more than 0.01GB!
