Buffalo Linkstation is not recognized when plugged directly into mac

I recently received a Buffalo Linkstation and tried setting it up, when i got it all up and running, the lights come on, but it won't connect to my mac, it's connected via ethernet cable
I do not have it plugged into a router and don't want to go get one, I have two wireless routers, but when i first used one for both the internet and the linkstation, it was too slow, and when i tried using one for the internet and one for the linkstation, they interfere with each other and defeat the purpose.
I just want it to go from the hard drive to the mac, then when i get it all set up, i'll add a printer
I know this defeats the purpose of the networking capability and that i should just go get an external hard drive, but I did have one and it stopped working, so i sent it in and got this.
Any help whatsoever would be appreciated

I've never seen one of these puppies but your question
was intriguing so I looked at Bufflalo Technology's web
site. They claim to have a built-in ftp server, and that
sounds like how you're gonna connect. The first thing to
do is figure out the linkstation's ip address. Hopefully the
default will be listed in the manual, or maybe you set it
in the setup process. Otherwise, you've got to search
your network for port 21. If it gets its ip address via DHCP,
you need a DHCP server in the mix. I bet your wireless
router has one, and you could use it to get you going.
Once you have the ip address, you can mount the device
in the Finder using Command-K and entering
ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the ip address.
Good luck!

  • Toshiba backup drive not recognized when plugged into thunderbolt display.

My Toshiba backup drive does not mount to my MacBookPro when plugged into my Thunderbolt Display. It works beautifully when plugged directly into my MBP, and other USB devices work beautifully when plugged into the same USB ports on the Thunderbolt Display.
All my equipment is pretty new. The Toshiba is currenlty configured to be my Time Machine back up drive.
    Laptop: 15" Macbook Pro, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 100 MHz DDR3, Mac OS 10.8.5
Backup Drive: Toshiba 500GB Canvio® Basics USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive
Apple Thunderbolt Display: 2560 x 1440, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics
When I plug the backup drive into the TB Display, usually nothing happens. The blue light on the drive doesn't come on, and it doesn't mount to the desktop. If I wiggle the USB back there, sometimes the blue light will come on, and sometimes it will mount for a minute then go away. This is true for all 3 USB ports. I have not had problems with any other USB devices, but the only other ones I've plugged into the Thunderbolt are my keyboard, bluetooth headset charger, and other items that probably use less power than the backup drive.

But the cable works when plugged into my laptop. Plus, the cable connection is pretty specific to the device; I'm not sure if you can buy another one seperately.

  • Disabled ipod not recognized when plugged back in to itunes.

Daughter's disabled ipod (second time) is not recognized when we follow instructions to enable it and plug into itunes.

HT1808 is the article you need to follow. You need the section labeled "Placing the device into recovery mode."
You need to power the device off. Once the device is off press and hold the Home button or the button on the front of the device and while holding the Home button plug in the device and continue holding the home button until you see the image below.

  • Can connect to internet when plugged directly into linksys cable modem but

I have an Airport Extreme router, am running Windows Xp, and can connect to the internet when I plug my laptop directly into my linksys cable modem. I can also connect to the internet when I plug directly into the airport extreme via cat 5 cable. However, when I try to connect wirelessly via airport extreme, I cannot get on the internet, even though it shows I have excellent signal strength on the laptop, have a solid green light on the airport, and all lights look right on the cable modem. It says something about error -6753. This is what I am doing now; I am connected to the airport via cat 5 cable, and am downloading all software / firmware updates for the airport, do you think this will fix my problem? How do I diagnose if my problem is with the wireless settings on the laptop, or with the airport? thanks, this is extremely aggravating.

Welcome to the discussions forums airporteggstreme.
I found a couple of posts that may be relevant. They point to the fact that your PC may be looking for a different address when it's connected wirelessly versus its wired connection. I believe you'll solve the problem by making sure both your Airport and your PC are configured to get their IP addresses via DHCP. If all else fails "hard reset" your Airport, unplug your PC's Ethernet cable and set it up wirelessly. That should work.
    Here's the link: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/228336.html
It refers to an Express but the Extreme will be similar. If you scroll way down you'll find the following:
In order to configure the Airport Express you not only need to connect to it as the access point but *also need to treat it as a DHCP server.*
If you connect the the AE as a base station but do not have "Obtain IP address automatically" in your network settings you will receive error code -6753. I racked my brain on that for a while after doing a number of hard resets. Once I went into my PC's network settings and removed the manual IP address I had set there (192.168.15.104) and set for automatic ip address retrieval I was able to configure the AE using the admin utility.
Once you have finished configuring the base station and set it to join your existing network, you can change your PC's IP back to whatever you need for your own purposes.

  • Is there a USB hub that works as well as plugging directly into Mac?

Some items don't seem to work as well when they are plugged into my "entrega machub 4U" as when they are plugged directly into my Mac Pro (i.e. my Logitech Web cam). Given the low number of USB ports on my Mac, I need a hub that can handle my accessories. Can anyone recommend a brand that works as well as plugging directly into the Mac?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Computer says usb/device not recognized when plugged in??

When I plug in my sons ipod nano 7th generation, just recently says usb/device not recognized and doesn't light up when plugged into the wall either??? Any suggestions??

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • IPad 1 disabled, not recognized when plugged in to any computer

I have an iPad 1 and I've been trying to get this fixed for about 2 days. It gives this message "iPad is disabled, try again in 23 million minutes" and whenever i plug it in to any computer it says "USB device not recognized". I also tried DFU mode and it still does it. Is there ANY way to restore the iPad ON the device. Or is there any way to get it fixed?

    No, check this:
Media you've bought from the iTunes Store or songs you've imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default. They won't be deleted by removing iTunes. Although it's highly unlikely that you'll lose any of your iTunes Library when following the steps below, first make sure that your iTunes library is backed up. See iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive for more information.

  • IPod touch black screen, not recognized when plugged in

I just brought myself an iPod touch 4th gen so I decided I would give my old one to my brother so I was clearing it off for him and some other things when I accidentally pulled it out of the computer I then pressed the sleep button to turn it on but the screen remained black so I tried plugging it back
In the computer but it shows it as a unknown device then I tried plugging it into the wall charger which didn't work either. My friend thinks it might be in dfu mode but if it was wouldn't the computer still recognize it? Any suggestions? Please and thank you :)

Google for a third-party repair place or sent it to Appe. See:

  • Nano 7th generation not recognized when plugged in

I just bought a new Nano and when I plugged it into my PC, nothing happened but the iPod turning on. I have gone through the tutorials on troubleshooting this situation, but nothing has helped. I have no problems plugging in my older iPod shuffle.
I have tried every USB port on my computer, I have tried resetting my iPod and restarting my computer. I even made a new Apple ID thinking I needed 1 per device. I was going to re-install iTunes but my computer wasn't cooperating.
Any suggestions? The device never even asked me to name it and it doesn't show up on the list on the left side of the screen within iTunes.

I re-installed iTunes twice and found other tutorials that should've helped. Now when I start iTunes it says that it recognizes there is an iPod plugged in but it can't be identified. When I run a diagnostic test, it fails to recognize the iPod is connected.
Any thougts? This seems to be a common problem.

  • Headphones Not Recognized When Plugged in, Internal Speakers Won't Mute

Hi all, I've scoured these message boards looking for a solution to this problem, but couldn't find a solution that worked.  Hopefully someone can!
    Toshiba Satellite C655-S5312
Edition: Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium (R) CPU B950@ 2.10GHZ
    Installed Memory: 4.00 GB
    System Type: 64-bit Operating System
The problem I'm having is that my computer won't recognize my headphones or any other external audio device when I plug them in. The internal speakers continue to play no matter what. I used the jack fine one night and the next morning it wasn't working. I've checked these external devices with other computers and they work fine.  My computer is just over a year old and no longer under warranty, but I can't imagine it being a hardware issue after such a short time of use.    I had this problem before right after I got my computer back from a repair shop.  Turns out the guy didn't reinstall my drivers.  Now, when I tried to follow those same steps, I'm getting nowhere.  I can say that I noticed that the available drivers on the Toshiba website have changed.  Before it was RealTek and now, after updates, it' was SmartAudioHD and now High Definition Audio Device.  I don't know if that bears any significance, but I thought I'd include that anyway.  I've tried uninstalling the driver, but everytime I restart my computer it's there under Audio Device Manager.  Tech Support said that my comp automatically adds the driver so I'll never really get rid of it.  Does that make sense?
    Troubleshooting steps so far:
1.) Uninstall and reinstall drivers (restarted my computer after)
2.)  Control Panel--->  Device Manager---> Sound, Video Games and Game Controllers---> High Definition Audio Device (was SmartAudio before updating driver during troubleshooting)---->right click and "Enable" is checked
3.)  Control Panel---> Sound---> Playback Tab (in Sound Dialog Box)---> Speakers (HDAD) green check mark but Headphones (HDAD) red downward arrow and "Not Plugged In" (Can enable or test because it's not detected)
Am I missing a driver?  Am I missing a vital step?  Please someone help me!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you are using Windows 7, go into control panel click on sounds and make headphones default. When you are not using your headphones you will have to do this procedure again to restore speakers on the laptop or computer. I am using Microsoft Gaming Headphones and had to do this because my toshiba laptop did not recognize it was plugged into the USB port. I have no problems with the plain speaker headphones only the ones that plug into the usb port.

  • Usb not recognized when windows7 installed on mac book pro retina

    Hi,
I am trying to install windows 7 to mac book pro - retina display with mavericks.
I managed to come to the point where windows installed and starts and I need to install the boot camp on the windows. I am having problems at this stage. Windows does not recognize the usb drives and i cant install the boot camp or connect to the internet, nothing. I restarted the machine several times but still no luck.
When i open it in mac, i can access the usb drive. When switched back to windows there is no usb.
    Can someone please advise?

The USB thumb drive itself is either USB 2 or 3. It's a hardware thing.  Not sure how to tell what type it is through a computer, but some usually the packaging indicates which it is.  Sometimes the drive itself will have it written on it somewhere. You will need to delete the bootcamp partition in OSX using the bootcamp assistant and redo the entire process using a USB 2 thumb drive. After that the process worked as indicated in the boot camp instructions. The bootcamp drivers were automatically installed after windows rebooted itself.
I am not 100% sure that this was the issue, but when I went from using a thumb that I knew was usb 3 to one that I was sure was not, it all of a sudden worked.  It could have also been that it just did not like the usb 3 drive I tried to use the first few times as it was a generic drive from Microcenter.

  • Ipad not charging. Plugged directly into usb, but has a not charging message. Why??

Having problems with my Ipad. It tells me it is not charging. How ever it seems to gain power wheen plugged into PC. How ever will not gain anymore than 5%life. Do i have a faulty battery?

So if it's left over night??
It would most likely finish the charge. As an experiment you can leave it for a couple hours and make note of the charge percentage before and after. If you turn the iPad of or put it to sleep to speed up the process, or alternately use the included power supply.
