Built-in Input: Stereo plug-in needed?

Hi
I'm trying to use Audacity to convert cassettes to digital. I've hooked up a mono-to-mono line from my old monaural cassette's headphone jack player to my MB Pro's Built-In Input. However, I'm not getting any sound.
Do I need a stereo adaptor to plug-in to the MB Pro?
Btw, I believe the setup is otherwise correct since when switching to buiilt-in microphone I pick the tv, etc.

Apple tends to use special jacks and expects at least stereo plugs. You can probably wire left and right together, but the plug length is likley to be important. Too short and it is "not there".

  • No signal from built-in input and MIDI crashing

Been trying to use GB to work out some rough ideas for a track. Idea was to drag and drop the stereo track into GB and then just plug the guitar straight into the computer using the 1/8" input. When I do that, no signal is getting to GB.
I've checked the "Sound" setting under "System Preferences," tried adjusting the "preferences" within GB, and also tried adding a "new basic track" and selecting "built in input." In all cases no signal input is coming to the meters within GB.
The other thing that's going on, and I think might be at the root of the problem, is before updating to 10.6, I had a Digi-02 at my disposal and had Pro Tools LE on the computer. The version I had was not compatible with 10.6 so removed it, but I think some traces are still in the computer as every time I open GB I get a "CoreMIDI.framework" message and the audio/midi crashes. Reading the details box I'm getting the following:

I've tried doing a search for any files with "digi" or "ProTools" in the name to delete, but I'm getting no culprits. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Spotlight doesn's search Library folders, maybe that's why you don't find anything. Take a look at these two folders and remove anything that you don't need (i.e. remove anything that you don't know - in a basic setup, there should be nothing in there):

  • Built-in Input

Hi, I have a iMac 2011, and I'm trying to use the Built-in input. To play the sound from my speakers as the input/out so others can hear it.
    But however
The M is grayed out and I cannot get it enabled. Any solutions to this problem? It's been puzzling me for a couple of days, and I really don't want to re-install osx.

Yes. You shouldn't need to change anything in Audio MIDI Setup. Just plug the speakers into the headphone port.

  • Built-in Input Static

I am trying to record my guitar through the built-in input on my Macbook Pro. I set the sound preferences of my Mac to read from the line-in. Everything appears to work fine. When I play a note on my guitar, the input level reacts accordingly. Nothing abnormal. The problem is when I attempt to use Logic Pro 8 or Garageband to record. I get this annoying, random, static noise. I have it set to monitor the input and the input meters are even picking up the static noise. The static dies slightly as I play, but returns at full power when I stop. I have tried unplugging my guitar from the computer, to see if that was the cause of the problem, but it is not. It happens just when I have it set to pick up the audio from the built-in input, even if nothing is plugged into it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! : )

  • Where's the built-in input gone?

I haven't used Garageband for a while and need to do some basic recording using the built-in input for real audio.
When I go to select the input there is no option for built-in, only 2 mono options for mic and stereo mic.
Where has the built-in option disappeared to?

You need to go to GB Preferences>Audio/MIDI and change the input to the Built-in.

  • Problems with Built in input/output

I just received my new Macbook Pro 13" from the refurb store, everything has worked perfectly except an issue when using an external USB audio interface.
Whilst running Line 6's Gearbox and Logic Pro Studio 8, i can record my guitar/synth through the interface but without any output sound from the internal speakers, yet when listening back after recording i can hear it fine. I've plugged headphones into the rear of the audio interface and sound is present, so in theory plugging an audio cable from the headphone slot into the built in input on my mac should work... no.
Have run through all settings and the main problem seems to be on the Audio/Midi setup page, where when checking the built in input settings it says on the right handside "Output is not available"
I really need some help with this as the main purpose of this new mac is for sound and audio work for college/university.

    Good idea Joe.
I went to my system preferences (I'm running Mavericks) and checked.
My internal microphone shows as 'built-in'
My line in shows as 'audio line-in port'
I moved up the input volume a little to be safe
Output volume on full, but there was never any problem playing tracks previously recorded.
I still haven't reinstalled Garage Band, as I wanted to get my podcast done before the end of the month. I exported the cast as it was to an external hard drive, along with small mp3's I had been about to add in (like my jingle) then went to another computer in the house, and recreated the podcast from those mp3's. I was able to add in the introductory audio recording on that other computer and complete my podcast.
I transferred the newly recreated podcast back to my normal laptop (where the problem occurs), checked and published my podcast. I double checks the newly recreated cast (the one I built up on the other machine from mp3's) to see if I could record now  - since I recorded within that particular project on the other machine. I *still was not able to record* on my laptop.
I still cannot create another new project that allows me to audio record. My preferences for the garage band app and op sys  on my laptop, all appear to be set for sound.
I guess I will now break down and reinstall garage band. I think I've reset something in the application that an update doesn't reset.
    Thanks for your ideas.

I have built a slideshow in iPhoto -- I need/want the file in .mp4 format.  How do I do that?
The question may have been answered somewhere but I was sent here -- so her I am.
Still I think I need my slideshow in .MP4 format to play on windows/smartTVs and the .m4v file that export offers seems to be the only option and it fails.
I am using iPhoto v9.5.1 on a Macbook Air.
    help.

Try changing the extension to .m4v and see if that will do the trick.  It did for me on another occasion where it wouldn't play as .MP4.  If it works it's a simple solution.
I compared an .m4v and an .MP4 file in Qujicktime Player via the Winde ➙ Show Movie Inspector menu and both were  the same codec:
    H.264, 1280 × 720, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
Check to see what codec the Movie Inspector window shows.

  • Aggregate Device not recognising Built-In Input

How do I get my Aggregate Device to recognise the ‘Built-In Input” in my iMac?
In the Audio Devices window, I have set my Aggregate Device to be the sound input master to allow me to choose ‘Aggregate Device’ as the Input Device in Logic Pro X .
This, I presume, means I do not have to switch between devices such as ‘Line In’ and my audio interface (Saffire) within Logic. I can just set it to ‘Aggregate’ and happily switch between tracks with different input types automatically catered for by the aggregate device.
However, although the ‘Aggregate’ selection in Logic recognises my audio interface input OK, to use my iMac’s own ’Built In Input’ I am forced to manually select ‘Built In Input’ as the Audio Input - the Aggregate setting does not seem to be recognise it and I can’t figure out why. Everything  else seems to work fine.
My set up: In the Audi Devices window, my audio interface is first in line, with the ‘Built in Input’ next. Both are selected for Use. The audio interface is set as the master clock and has no Drift Correction enabled. The ‘Built In Input’ has Drift Correction enabled. All devices are set to the same sample rate (‘Format’).
    Thanks.

    1) How have you concluded that the Built In input isn't there? - No sound (which I do get if I manually select the very same 'Built-In Input' source in Logic).
    2) Are there only 3 pairs of inputs when you use the Aggregate Device? - Not sure what you mean. It's as shown in the screenshots.
    3) Have you tried all available (pairs of) inputs from the Aggregate device (should be 8, or 4 pairs) in Logic? - Not sure what you mean. In Logic I am merely selecting the Input Device source in Preferences - I select Sapphire, Built-In Input all OK; select Aggregate and it doesn't recognise the Built-In input.
    4) And what kind of signal are you feeding the built-in input. - Line out from my eDrums (sep. right and left channel into single, stereo input on my iMac). Again, works fine but only when I manually select 'Built-In Input' source in Logic.
Incidentally, just tried making the Aggregate Device the 'use this device for sound input' master (with and without Drift Correction for In-Built Audio selected) and... no change.
What I mean and what is crucial is to know, is whether you have set your track(s) to the right input(s). On my screenshots you see how it should also look for you on stereo or mono audio tracks. 8 mono or 4 stereo  inputs.

Mono (disregard the names, those are just mine)

  • Latency using built-in Input

I've got a macbook, 1.83ghz, 1g of Ram, and about 40gb of hard disk space left.
I've done some recording in the past by just plugging my guitar directly in to the built-in input with no problem.
Then I recorded my wife laying down multiple tracks of vocals with no problem.
Then yesterday I plugged my guitar in to add a track to a song with midi tracks and the latency problem was bad. There was far to great of time laps from when I played to when it was recorded. It was a funk tune in which I was trying to lay down a tight rhythm part. Needless to say... well it wasn't tight.
Also, then during playback, the video display was kind of glitchy. It scrolled along the measures, but it was a little jerky. Also, when I tried to make adjustments during playback, they would be very delayed in responding. For example I'd click on a button and about 2 seconds later it would respond.
It's almost as if GarageBand didn't have enough memory. No other applications were running.
Anyone else experience something like this?
    Thanks!
    Ted Vieira

Have you tried locking all the MIDI tracks? MIDI is
    very CPU intensive.
Additionally, check that GB's prefs are set to
    "Minimum Delay"
Haven't tried locking the MIDI tracks, but I didn't do that on the past recordings that worked smoothly. I recorded several vocal tracks of my wife on a tune that used approx 8 midi tracks, or so, and there was no latency in the audio input, and everything runs smoothly during playback. This new problem seems to be a new problem that just popped up. I haven't done anything new to the macbook... no new installations or anything that I can think of. Like I said, it sounds kind of like a memory problem, but I'm not running any other apps at the time of recording.
    Thanks,
    Ted
