Buying a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual with a PPC 7450 Processor???

I just purchased but have not received as of yet a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual PCI-X 1 GB 160 GB. In the Details it is stated: "1.8 GHz DP PPC 7450 (G5) x2 RISC Processor."
A friend of mine mentioned that the PPC 7450 is a G4 processor but it might have been used in what is referred to as a G 4.5 PPC. That the true G5 processor should be a 970 fx processor!
Can someone quickly confirm one way or the other. The machine might ship to me tomorrow (Monday) and I will tell them not to ship if I have been misled.
Thanks much for a quick response.

If it's a Power Mac G5, then the description that it's a PPC 7450 is wrong (a G4). G5's are 970.
Since it is hard to mistake a G5 for a G4 Power Mac, and G4's did not have 1.8 GHz processors (unless it has a third party G4 upgrade) or PCI-X, it is likely that you are getting a Power Mac G5.
I've never heard of a "G4.5" description. Apple sold G4 Power Macs up to 1.42 GHz in the curvy plastic case, and then sold G5 Power Macs in the squarish aluminum case. You can't put a "G5" PPC in a G4 Power Mac, and you can't put a "G4" PPC in a G5 Power Mac.
But it wouldn't hurt to contact the seller to verify that it's a Power Mac G5 (huge aluminum case).

Hi, I would like to buy a power mac G4 quicksilver and install the latest hardware i.e. i5, SSD etc., is this possible?

Intel i5 processor upgrade? No way, no how with the OEM PPC board.
The "Latest" hardware that can be used with the original G4 motherboard is imited to used 7445/7447/7448 3rd party processor upgrades (all obsolete), PCI expansion, AGP graphics (only used as all are obsolete), new IDE drives (capacity support dependant on model year) and PC133 memory.
SATA and SSD can be used, but only with PCI SATA controllers or the specially configured IDE modded SSD from OWC.
PCI controllers will get you about SATA 1 data rates. The adapted SSD on IDE won't get beyond 60 MB/s.
You could use the case and put a mini ITX or micro ATX board in to support the i5. Of course you could then run Windows 7. If you want to run OS X, discussion ends here and begins your use of Google and searching for "x86" and "Hackintosh".

  • Upgrade card recommendation for my Power Mac G5 1.8 GHz Dual

    Hello Folks,
I have a Power Mac G5 1.8 GHz Dual that came with a nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 64 MB graphics card.
    QUESTION:
Has anyone here upgraded the Graphics Card ( nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 64 MB ) from their "Power Mac G5 1.8 GHz Dual"?
If yes, how was your experience doing this? Do you like your new graphics card?
Which 3 cards would be good upgrades on this system?
I am looking for a little more graphics power.
    G5 1.8 GHz Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thanks for the reply Edwin.
The ATI X800 XT is a nice card. I little high on price, but it is awesome.
What are the best reputable places to buy cards like this at the best prices possible?

    Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)
Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?
    Thanks very much.

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.
    Thank you.

  • System disks for my power mac mdd g4 1.4 dual processor

i bought this power mac mdd g4 1.4 dual processor off from craigslist,no disks at all he didn't have them,so where can i get the installation disks?

Apple's Customer Service sometimes has OEM disk sets for older machines.
    www.apple.com/contact/
Chances are slim, though, that they would have them for a machine that old.
You can find retail disk sets for older OS X versions at places like HarcoreMac, but their prices aren't cheap. EBay and CraigsList are other possibilities.
Your G4 MDD dual 1.42GHz machine is termed the "Power Mac G4 (FW800)" model by Apple. It originally came with OS X 10.2.3. It's max OS is OS X 10.5.8, the one apparently on it now.
Since the machine is running OS X 10.5.8, you should probably seek a retail OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) version.

What version of InDesign is best for my MAC (OS Version 10.6.8 with a 64 bit processor?

InDesign CS6 v8.1.0 should run without problems.
The cloud versions do not. They would require OSX 10.7.5 and soon OSX 10.9:

  • Looking to buy a Power Mac G5 - some input please

    Hello,
I have an older MacBook Pro 17" and a newer Imac I plan on selling. I want something good for video editing via FCP.
I have been looking at the Power Mac G5 but I am no computer expert.
I can buy an older used one with the following congif.
The G5 is about 3 years old (I'm told) but was almost never used (I'm told).
    - Comes with 23" LCD
    - Has a total of 5.5 RAM (added to original 512 config)
    - Airport Extreme Card
    - Leopard OS
    - original box, manuals and disks
    - Original order number: Dual 2.5GHZ SuperDrive M9457LL/A
    - L2 Cache: 512K per processor
    - Frontside bus: 1.25GHz per processor
    - DDR SDRAM main memory: 512MB PC3200 (400MHz) Supports up to 8GB
    - 8X AGP Pro graphics: ATI RADEON 9600 XT with 128MB DDR SDRAM
    - Hard drive: 160GB Serial ATA; 7200 rpm
    - Optical drive: SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
    - PCI slots: Three open full-length PCI-X slots: one 133MHz, 64-bit slot and two 100MHz, 64-bit slots
    - Expansion: One FireWire 800 port, two FireWire 400 ports (one on front)
    - three USB 2.0 ports (one on front)
    - two USB 1.1 ports (on keyboard)
    - AGP 8X Pro slot with graphics card installed, including ADC connector and DVI connector
    - Bays: Two internal hard drive bays (1 occupied); one optical drive bay
    Also Added
    - Hard drives: 250GB Serial ATA
    - Graphics: ATI Radeon 9800 XT with 256MB of DDR SDRAM
    - Wireless Internal Bluetooth module with antenna & Bluetooth Wireless keyboard & mouse
    - Display: Apple Cinema HD Display (23-inch flat panel) M9178LL/A
Question: Would this be a good computer for video editing?
What should I expect to pay for this complete configuration?
Thank you very much for you input!
    Tammy

Using the website Mac2Sell, I get a value of about $1,400 for that config (not including the monitor).
While this machine could be just fine for video editing with Final Cut Pro, it does have several drawbacks:
    1) Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 and above can leverage the graphics card for some effects (the FxPlug ones). The Radeon 9600 in this one is a very slow card, and won't provide much benefit for those effects, or for running Motion in general.
    2) You'll need to add a separate hard drive if you're going to do editing. Perhaps you already have an external drive that you've been using with your MacBook Pro or iMac.
    3) Since this machine is about 3 years old, it's out of warranty, even if it had AppleCare on it. So, any part failure would have to be replaced out of your own pocket, and this can get very expensive depending on the part.
For around $2,000 to $2,300 you could get either a refurbished Mac Pro or a brand-new entry level Mac Pro. Both would run circles around the G5 you're looking at. While I love my PowerMac G5, the Mac Pros are much faster, especially since the Mac Pros have at least four CPUs and the one you're considering only has two. Add a Dell 24" monitor and you'll have one great editing machine.

  • Power Mac G5 fails to start up with Airport Extreme card in.

    Hello.
I just received a 'new' Airport Extreme card for my Power Mac G5 1.8 (900fsb). I just installed it and it failed to start up with it in. The mac started up but without my Apple LCD and any USB devices. I did a PMU reset on the logic board and took out the Crucial 3rd party 512mb RAM and tried again but it won't start up. When I take the card out it's business as usual.
Is it the card or the mac that's at fault? Has anyone had this problem too?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    This problem can happen if:
    - the card has not been fully seated into its socket (doing that can take a firm push) or if you installed the card upside down
    - the card is defective
    - the card socket in the PowerMac G5 has broken or bent contact pins
Check the installation you did with:
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/apec_c.pdf
If you are sure the card has been properly installed, you are gong to have to either (a) try a different Airport Extreme card or (b) let an Apple dealer or service center take a look at your PowerMac G5.

  • Power Mac G5 - Won't start up with the beep noise.

    Hi all,
I am wondering if someone can help me with my problem. I've just gone to turn on my G5 after dusting out the inside (i unplugged the power supply and then lightly dusted the inside) and now it won't turn on.
The power light comes on, but there is no beep, and the fans start, but they gradually get louder. The white power light then flashes once in a while
Can anyone offer any help please?
    thanks
    Mark

Well - as long as you have pressed the button firmly once, that should be it.
I did wonder if you had disturbed the RAM while you were rummaging inside - is there a pattern to the flashes of the white power light, as described at the bottom of the page here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302527
If not, as the mains power has been disconnected, it's just possible that the internal back-up battery may need replacing

  • Power Mac G4 - Have you had success with a SATA Drive?

I am replacing a bad SATA drive- have any of you used a SATA drive and had a good experience with it?
the Seagate 1TB I'm replacing is less than a year old. I only want to do this once.
    thanks!

    Hi-
I've been using WD SATA drives for over 3 years in my G4's, using Firmtek Seritek PCI controllers.
    No issues at all.
I have several WD6400AAKS drives, which are very fast and very reasonably priced.
The WD Black drives are excellent as well, with the 2 I have providing reliable eSATA transfer for a couple years.
    Performance is shown Here.

  • Is my Power Mac G5 with 2 x GHz that cost nearly £2000 now finished.

My Power Mac G5 has 8Gb of ram with 2 x GHz processors and runs like a dream. I mainly use it to record music for Television. The man in the Mac shop told me I can't upgrade my system to Snow Leopard. That's not very good is it.
However I'm sure the kind people at Macintosh will respect the fact that there are many customers who bought PPC Macs not so long ago and don't plan on buying brand new replacements quite yet since they are still happy with their current machines.
Does anyone know whether Steven Jobs plans to allow us PPC users to upgrade to Mac's "Lion" OS next year?

I recall how a lot of service bureau systems stayed with OS 9 because "it works" and all their workflow and graphic design really didn't need all new software, hardware, etc.
Your G5 2.0DP came out in Oct 2003.
My SE/30 was a great buy in 1989 for $4100 too, but replaced that with Quadra 650 and then PM7100 and eventually some G3s and G4.
People with Snow Loepard complain about how it is a memory hog, sluggish, Safari 5 doesnt' run well, issues with Java, Flash and more.
You could pick up an iMac from Apple Store Specials next year after Lion has been out and had time to iron it out.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/imac
Lion sounds like a lot of... consumer mobile support for pads, phones, and all these new fangled gadgets and new interface. Give it a year or two to mature. I still don't see that the path from Tiger to Leopard and on to Snow Leopard were more than some service packs and optimizing the kernel to be able to boot 64-bit kernel (like Vista 4 yrs ago).

  • Upgrades For Dual 1.8GHz G5 Power Mac

    Hi
I have just bought a power mac g5 and i am confused with what some of the other posts are saying about ram. The spec is 1.8 GHz Dual Processor, 1GB Ram (8x128MB Chips), 64MB graphics card. I am looking to upgrade my ram to at least 2 GB. Is the spec i need ddr pc3200 400MHz 184 pin, as this seems to be expensive? i am also looking at upgrading the optical drive so it can read/write dual layer discs, i have found 1 on ebay with lightscribe aswell. should this be ok?
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=35 0227215181
i am also after onboard bluetooth and wireless. i already have a d-link bluetooth usb but would prefer the bluetooth card and antenna. is it one combined card? is it possible to get a wireless n card with this model?

If you want you can get some upgrades from OWC In wookstock, Illinois in the usa . I see you are from the uk that maybe to far for you .What do you want yo upgrade first . I would do the graphics card, but I would get the nvidia 6800 gt or better . they go for about 200 dollars in the us , I dont no how much thats in pounds . But www.owc.com is a good place to look and ebay .

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 - Move Hard Drive to another G5??

    Hi,
I'm using a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 w/ OS 10.5.8 with my Pro Tools 7.4.2 HD3 rig, 2 internal hard drives and tons of external FW hard drives.  It's being hinky with me (every time I reboot/restart the Mac, I have to take the side cover off or it won't boot; wierdest problem ever), and being that I don't want to plunk down thousands of dollars on a new Mac and all new Pro Tools equipment, I'm hunting E-Bay for an exact duplicate of my Mac, of which there are plenty.  Since PowerPC architecture is long dead, they are dirt cheap.  No reason not to have a spare.
    My questions are:
If I buy another Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 machine, and swap the hard drive it comes with, and use my already functional hard drive (with the OS, Pro Tools and all related plug-ins installed), and move over my Pro Tools cards and 8 GB of RAM to the new(er) machine, will it boot up and work without me having to reformat/reinstall everything?
I also see numerous Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 machines out there as well.  What are the chances of doing the same as question 1 with this?  I know the processor is different, but would my already formatted and functional hard drive care?  I don't think this will work, but I have to ask.
If Question 2 is even possible, would upgrading to a Dual 2.7 even be worth it as far as noticeable speed improvement?  Superior Drummer, EZ Drummer and EZ Keys are all real time plug-ins that need the Mac's processor/memory to work. They don't use the Pro Tools cards to work.  So, would getting that extra 200 Mhz of processor power even matter?
The reason I ask is that reinstalling the OS and Pro Tools is not the issue; 4 hours and it's done.  BUT, reinstalling Superior Drummer, EZ Drummer, and EZ Keys, along with the mountain of expansion packs, will literally take several days of work.  If I could just plop my old hard drives and 8GB of RAM into a newly purchased G5 Dual 2.5 or 2.7, and not go through that, it would be AWESOME.
Thanks for any feedback on this.

Just got done making the transfer to the "new" Dual 2.7 G5 I bought off E-Bay.  (yes, on Christmas Eve, because....well.... I have no life).  Worked dead, solid perfect!!!  I'm grinning from ear to ear right now.
I had to reset some pref's in Pro Tools (not an issue),  Just got done running Pro Tools through its paces, and it works perfectly.  All plug ins run (had to re-authorize Superior Drummer and some related plugins because it detected the change in system serial #, again not an issue).  Other than that, it worked like it always has. I loaded every third party plug-in I could find, and every third party program I could find, and so far everything works without any issues.  Only exception is Team Viewer locks up when I try to close it (have to Force Quit), but I couldn't care less right now. I use that twice a year if that, and just to have someone help me remotely.
Thanks for the info and help.  This made my Holidays.

  • Power Mac connected to a TV

    Hello everyone,
I am thinking of buying a Power Mac for home and until I can save up the extra money for a cinema display I was thinking of hooking up the mac to my LCD TV. It has a DVI connection and in theory can be used as a computer screen. Does anybody out there do this already and if so has they encounterd any problems. I live alone so no fighting for the TV.
Most of the work I do is video( FC suite) and photo (Adobe CS). My TV is a Philips 32PF9830.
    Any feed back appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    PowerMac 2x2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    It works.
A couple caveats. The DVI connection does not support sound, so if you are trying to watch DVD's you need a different connection for sound, using SPDIF or line out. The resolution of most TV's does not match that of a decent monitor.
