C655: Physically replaced hard drive, NOW WHAT? Don't know the very next step.

Start of History: Received HDD failure message 2 weeks ago.  Researched on here and discovered I would have to replace drive.  Backed up computer with disks and it took 5 to get everything backed up and also made a "Repair disk Windows 7-64 bit".  Purchased new drive and Upgraded memory (2ea X 4s=8) while I was in there.  So, this morning I physically installed my new hard drive and memory.  When I turned on the laptop, it asked for a boot disk.  Couldn't remember if that was on the Repair disk, so I removed new hard drive, installed old drive and looked at Repair disk.  It showed three boot "something" files.  I reinstalled new drive and used the Repair disk to start computer.  It did some "stuff" and then a pop up to choose "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" or "system recovery options".  I have absolutely no clue which to use.  Tried the SRO and it required me to select and search for "something" that lead me to believe it was just to repair the old drive.  So, I cancelled and went back to the TRW.  That lead to something asking me to install disks.  The only disks I have are the back ups, so I tried them, but it read the 1st disk in about 3 seconds, then ejected it and asked me to "set the 1st disk".  Don't even know what that means.  "Set"?  Whatever the case, I don't think I have the correct disks made from the old drive.  End of History.
Currently have the old failing hard drive back in laptop till I get some answers. Hopefully before this thing dies for good. I purchased the laptop new and have the disks somewhere at home in Texas.  I am on the air force base in Charleston and don't have immediate access to those disks and if I were home, it would take me a while to locate them.  So let's assume they aren't availabe at this point.  Here is what I need to know.  Are there other disks that I need to create from my laptop?  Which option should I be using TRWizard or SROptions?  If TRWizard, what disks is it asking me to install?  If someone is able and willing to educate me on each step regarding the software prior to removal of the hard drive and then the same baby steps at turning on the computer for the first time after physically installing new drive, that would be helpful.  Constructive, "dumbed down", with crayola photos etc.  I need step by step everything.  Standing by and waiting for help...

New hard drive is a Toshiba MK5059GSXP
That drive does use advanced-format technology.
   MKxx59GSXP Hard Disk Drive
We've had mixed results restoring to such drives. See my original post here.
Give it a try. At the first opportunity, install the new Intel storage driver. (I've read reports of its being installed from a thumb drive prior to completing the restore.)

  • Replaced hard drive now what help

I =have the crt imac snow edition, I replaced hard drive all I get is a blue globe on start up, I have the software restore disc have placed it in nothing happens tried the holding down c key to start from the cd, Nothinh happens I have read numerous threads hoping to find the answer.

First of all, are you sure the CD you inserted is truely bootable and designed for your iMac (and not specific to another different Mac)?
Anyways to reset PRAM, while turning on your iMac, hold down Option + Cmd + P + R (I know, hard to do that 4 key combo).. and you should hear some "boing" sound, wait until you hear two "boings" then you can release and try to hold down 'C' again to boot your CD... I think that's how that works... someone can correct me or clarify if I'm not 100% correct....

  • Iphoto library on external hard drive now does not show all the photos when i access it from macbook

i backed up iphoto library to an external hard drive.  Deleted photo library on the macbook.  After transferring some new photos to macbook from a camera, when i access the iphoto library on external hard drive only the new photos show up.  Originals are still in files, but don't appear when opening iphoto library on external hard drive.

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Replaced Hard Drive now warranty is voided?!?

I had to replace my HDD on my MacBook Pro mid 2012. I had lost the original drive and needed to take it to the apple store. Before taking it to the apple store I figured I should see what they could do. After discussing what happened they are now saying my warrant is void for replacing the hard drive. However, I thought you still could up to 2012 models.

I think I am unclear on the details.  When did you buy this computer?  Was the computer still under warranty when you replaced the drive?  What about now? You are now asking them to replace the drive you installed in the computer?  I can undestand them balking at the idea of doing that.  They do not feel an obligation to warranty anything that may have been affected by  work you performed or parts you installed.   I don't know how it works in your case with "user serviceable" components, but generally technicians are told to not work on something a user had handled.  Apple doesn't want to be responsible for anything you have touched, even if you have been extremely careful.  With present warranties you can't even touch a screw without voiding all warranty on a machine.   In your case you have a few serviceable parts.  Let's say you replaced the RAM but not the drive, then the drive went.  As long as you hadn't touched the drive at any stage it would still be under warranty, but not the replaced RAM.
No, it isn't always easy to work with warranties as they are set up, but as you are asking them to cover things, so you have to play by their rules.

  • Replaced hard drive - now Intel Rapid Storage Tech screen comes up first?

A couple of weeks ago I replaced the hard drive in my Pavilion dm4-3090se laptop with a 240GB Samsung SSD (the laptop came with a 500GB hybrid hard drive that is now my backup).
Everything runs fine, except when I first turn it in I get the screen shown in the picture below and it takes a good 5 or 6 seconds before it closes it and opens Windows. How can I make this screen go away?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Are you running Windows 7 or Windows 8? I see you still have the 32 gig mSATA acceleration cache drive installed and it has the Intel Rapid Storage acceleration partition on it, just disabled. Can you find the Intel Rapid Storage control panel and reformat the 32 gig accelerator drive? It will look something like this:
I can also suggest just physically removing the 32 gig acceleration disk drive. You don't really need it any more. You can't acclerate an SSD and would not need to do that anyway since having a main SSD is even faster than having the accelerator. See page 44 of the Manual:

  • Replaced hard drive - now I get kernel panic when I load installation disk

    Hi all,
I just replaced a dead hard drive on my Powerbook G4. The Apple Hardware Test says everything is fine. When I put in the installation disk that came with my laptop (OS 10.2.3) and hold down the "C" key I just get the polite suggestion in several languages that I reboot--from surfing the boards I think this is called a Kernel Panic (?). If I don't hold down the C key the computer just crashes. It is possible that my installation disk is bad--was accidently stored in the attic for a couple of years and I only went to look for it after my hard drive died. However, the AHT disk was also stored up there and it worked just fine. I have the phone number for Apple to call about replacement disks, if no one thinks I've overlooked some other possible cause.
    Thanks,
    Lori

    Lori:
I am glad you were able to boot from your co-worker's disk. As you noted, that isolates the issue as being a faulty install disk.
It looks like I'll be purchasing 10.4.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail Version of Tiger. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales 1-800-692-7753.
You can find the Full Retail Version of Tiger, if you shop carefully, at online outlets like FastMac Retail $159; CDs $179, HardcoreMac Retail $199, CDs $249, AllMac Retail $149, CDs $179, etc. If you know what you are looking for, read all documentation carefully and ask questions of the seller, you may be able to get Tiger on eBay.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • I want to upgrade my software, but it says I need more start up memory. I keep my stuff on an external hard drive so I don't know what is eating my memory. How can I check this?

How can I figure out what is eating my memory so I can upgrade my software?

Do you mean disk storage space or physical RAM? The latter is memory, not the former. If you mean the former:
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
If you mean RAM, then you have to add more to the computer which is not possible on Air models.

  • Swapped out hard drive now what ...

Hey everyone I took my 20gb out of my PB G3 Lombard and put it into my iBook 500 and it worked for a while then got VERY hot , way hotter than the old drive in it which was the original 10 GB . It then started to lock up after about a couple of weeks of use . It got worst and I tried to reinstall the OS and it got to almost the end and stopped , you could tap the left palmrest ( were the hard drive is ) and it would go for a sec or two and then stop , tap again then then would stop again until finally it wouldn't budge . I took the original and put it back in and put the 20GB and put it back in my Lombard, tapped it and it started and finished the install and has been running cool and fine ever since . Please, I want to replace the hard drive but not have this happen again . The 20 was a PATA Travelstar . Any guess as to what went wrong ?

I should add that I really like people keeping older hardware performing useful tasks. Heck I still boot up my 1986 MacPlus every so often and use a mid 90's mac as an email server much of the time. But I don't think this drive is worth spending time on. Too small and showing very serious signs of wear and tear. It is simply not worth the trouble or the risk. I can pretty much guarantee it will let you down within the next few months if you use it in any important role.
    Cheers

  • Replaced hard drive - now can not install an OS - any ideas?

That's right. The iMac was given to me and the "giver" did not give me any CDs etc. (very old iMac).
Anyway, the hard drive was bad, so I replaced it along with 512 of RAM.
I am unable to install any OS because all my OS X versions are upgrades. I just want to see if the thing will work worth anything with OS X before I keep it.
    I bet I'm stuck aren't I?
    D.

If UR looking for original Cd's - check out your local "quokka' mag - you know, the one that has all the for sale items - furniture, whitegoods, computers etc - here in Perth Australia we have teh 'Quokka'. Anyway, try all the 'imacs for sale' contacts until you find either someone who has original CD's for sale - this could be someone who gets bulk intakes of 2nd hand computers - PC and/or Mac - often they get shipmetns of @nd hand computers form schools and the original software Cd's as well- you could pick up a bargain?!
What colour is your iMac?? Apple has a chart to distinguish it's computer series on its info base - I think (hang on and I'll go find it for U) ...... ah, here it is - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58669 - will help a little bit in differentiating between models.
Look, Mr Singitloud-in-the-shower, these G3 iMacs are great little beasts - I just love them - even at 55 - and today I've pulled my first one apart - but it's a scrap piece with the CDRW and HD already scavenged - but it's my learn-on machine - now I just need to find where on the web you can find reliable fix-it info so I can learn more repair ideas.

  • Replaced Hard Drive now another problem.

Today my friend replaced the hard drive on his iBook G4 933mhz as he feared it was dead after the machine wouldnt recognise it - very much like my G3 did a year ago - whilst doing so when he was taking the power button lead up from the logic board - due to the way it was deisgned it looks as if the whole thing has been taken up from the logic board, even after that he couldnt just remove the top connecting bit, he put it back in place but when he closed the machine up after replacing the drive it doesnt switch on.
Is ther any way of soldering this back onto the logic board? or is it now even more buggered than it was before?
    Thanks

    Scampdoodle,
There's a life lesson learned here,
Don't let friends work on your iBook unless they are certified. Bring it to your local Apple Store/Reseller or someplace like PowerBookRes.
No, I don't think you can solder it back on without causing more damage. Most documentation warns to be extremely careful when removing the top case because of the speaker and power wires. Those wires are fragile and can easily rupture, which causes problems (one of the reasons why certified technicians should do these things). You may be able to buy a wire from a place like eBay.
    Good Luck,
    Jon
PS Don't forget about places like PowerBookResQ;. They do iBook upgrades as well as troubleshooting.

  • New hard drive, now what??

HELP!      Just had to have a new hard drive on the computer.  tried moving itunes........finally got the playlists/etc to work - but, I have many duplications of the playlists (manually deleted those already) and the "date added" is now a new date for every stinkin' song.
    a few questions:
***is it possible to have moved the file from old data file to new hard drive, import media into itunes and keep the "date added" that was originally attached to each song??  (or still do that???)
***also, after doing the reinstall and the importing media, I ended up with 3-4 copies of playlists when I opened up my itunes.  Manually deleted them, but wondering what I did to get them there in the first place.
***and, now that the songs are there - I can't edit anything as I was able to before.   Everything is "gray" and won't let me edit.  I tried following the directions (in forum) to change from read only but my computer wasn't agreeing.   any tips on how to do this??  the only thing that comes up when I follow the directions is "owner" - none of the other users on the computer.   Running Windows 7.
thanks - I appreciate the help - computers aren't my strong-point.  this is really frustrating!!

....Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. Use the Change Permissions... button grant to your account...
Do you get the Change Permissions button? Once you've done that there should be options to add additional users and adjust their permission levels.

  • I install a new hard drive now what??

i took my laptop to the apple store and it turned out the hard drive shot so i purchased on myself and installed it myself using the website ifixit. everything when well but now what do i do next? i tried to install the software but nothing happen it stops in the middle of installation process.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Did you format your new drive before attempting to install the software? If not, You need to do this first. Often drives are shipped not formatted for Macs.
Using your install disc, navigate to Disk Utility. Go to the partition tab and partition your new drive with one partition and be sure the format is "Mac Extended (Journaled) and the Partition Map Scheme is "Apple Partition Map". Once the drive is properly formatted, you should be able to install your software successfully.
    Good luck!

  • Erased Hard Drive now what?

Ok so I sold my Macbook intel running latest version of Leopard. I put in the original Leopard DVD and rebooted using the "C" key. I selected my hard drive and erased it with a one pass option. Now with the Install DVD still in I reboot and get the Mac OS X language selection screen. I select "Use English for the Main Language." and hit the arrow. I then get the following error message " Mac OS X cannot be installed on the computer" For Mac OS X System requirements .....
    help what do i do?

When you want to post a topic, first go to the particular Discussion. In this case that would be Using Mac OS X Leopard, here is the link: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1225
On the left side you will see: *Post New Topic* Click there then fill out the Subject line, then compose your post, then click Post Message. That's all there is to it.
Also a good idea to read the Apple Discussions Terms of Use before posting here.
    http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa
As to your external drive issue... *"Tiger was able to see the drive but Leopard just does not see it and I have no idea how to have this drive mounted correctly under the new OS."* Try repairing disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
