Call compiled LabView from Delphi

Argh! I've done this already, but try as I can, I can't remember how, nor can I find my simple example!
I have a Delphi program that needs to communicate with my LabView app. The LabView app will be compiled into a standalone executable using the LabView (V7.1.1) Application Builder, as the target machines will not have LabView installed; hence, I can't take the approach of automating LabView.
For discussion purposes, the LabView app has a string control and a "go" button as controls, and a string indicator for indicators. The Delphi client supplies an XML fragment as a text string to the LabView app's string control, then "hits" the go button. The LabView app then processes the XML fragment, and outputs the results to the string indicator.
The LabView app is contained in a VI that has the aforementioned controls and indicator as input and output terminals, and has been compiled into an application with the "Enable ActiveX server" option selected. The Delphi app is built using Delphi 2007 for Windows.
How exactly do I import the LabView app into the Delphi programming environment? I've tried many things, have gotten close, but I'm not sure if I've got it right. I can connect to the LabView app, in that running the Delphi app starts up the LabView app, but I can't access the VI's controls or indicators.
How do I access the VI's controls and indicators from Delphi?
How do I simulate a button press?
This is very frustrating, as I had prototyped this six months ago!

Yes, that is exactly what I am looking for! Right now, I can only "see" a few, very generic methods, such as the GetVIReference() function in my second post. What I don't get is what to do with my "newapp" variable; how to I access the front panel controls and indicators?
Looking back at my second post, it seems the VI.Call may not really be the right thing to do, is that right? I have demonstrated to myself that the newapp.Connect call starts the LabView app - so then, I suppose the VI.Call is illegal, as the VI is already started - is that correct?
So I'm guessing that, after newapp.Connect, all I need to do is read/write the front panel controls/indicators, right?
But how?!!!
I'm not aware of a way to insert a LabVIEW front panel into an ActiveX container in another application, but even if you could, you would still need to use the ActiveX Server interface to actually access the data by the rest of the Delphi program.
That would be cool, but not necessary. Probably, I'll end up bringing the LabView app to front, and just using its front panel as is. That said, if someone know how...
The LabVIEW application doesn't even need to display the front panel, but can instead be called by the Delphi program, run in the background, and be polled/updated when needed by the Delphi application.
That's the other possibility...

I would try this with the newest service pack since it seems this assertion does
not exist in later code lines. It appears to be related to a class loader
issue. Do you know what version of the Java VM Delphi uses?

RFC call from Delphi (Bad Variant Type error)

Well, I'm trying to call an RFC function from Delphi via ActiveX objects..
I have Codegear 2009 installed and it works without any problem..
But on another system with Delphi7 installed when I ran same code it gives "Bad Variant Type" error when assigning SapLogonControl's connection object to SapFunction's connection parameter... Both computers have same SAP installation. And on both systems ActiveX objects imported correctly on Delphi.

As I said while Codegear 2009 runs this code without any problem, Delphi 7 crashes on that assignment.. Also I tried outside Delphi, and the file compiled with Codegear works on both systems while the file compiled with Delphi 7 again crashes on buth systems...
Is there a problem with Delphi 7? Should I use at least Delphi 8 or something for compiling?

You must use Non-Unicode RFC library for Delphi 7.0.

Can LabVIEW call a function from a .sys file or is LabVIEW limited to dll access?

My vendor has sent me a .sys file with functions accessing their hardware. Can i call these function from labview directly or do I have to wrapper the .sys with a dll?

Well a sys file is a kernel device driver. LabVIEW does not have any direct way of accessing such a driver. The way kernel drivers are accessed is usually through a DLL which makes calls to WinAPI functions such as CreateFile(), ReadFile(), WriteFile(), CloseHandle() and DeviceIORequest(). Since these WinAPI calls are basically just DLL calls too, you could theoretically use the Call Library Node to call them and access the kernel device driver in such a way.
However for any kernel device driver with more than one or two device driver calls, it will certainly be easier in terms of development, debugging and maintenance of the code, to write actually a dedicated DLL in C/C++ for this device driver and access that DLL from LabVIEW, especially if you consider the LabVIEW datatype limitations when designing the DLL interface (Basically this same DLL can then be called from any other Windows development environment, be it Visual Basic (similar datatype limitation as LabVIEW), Delphi, (Visual) C, LabVIEW or also various scripting environments like Python and Lua.
Some of the necessary WindAPI calls are rather involved and pose quite a bit of trouble to get the parameter data right in LabVIEw.

Can Any one tell me what is the step in calling a function from a *.lib file in Labview application

Hi, I am working on Labview 8.0.
I am trying to communicate to a thrid party HW using the driver file he has provided to me.
The drive file is a *.lib file.
I am unable to call the function from the lib file.
I could get only from a DLL.

LabWindows is not the same as LabVIEW. LabVIEW cannot call .lib files. LIB files are intermediary products and you need to use a wrapper DLL that's compatible with the object format of the .lib file. It's as simple as that. LabWindows creates C application and from that perspective is no different than a regular C
compiler. That's why you can call .lib files because that's how .lib
files are used.
A CIN, as pointed out, is something completely different and will not help you.

I have created a third "selection" executable that allows the operator to choose between one of the two, but I am receiving errors when I attempt to call a LabVIEW executable from within a LabVIEW executable using either the "System exec" VI or the "Run Application" VI. If I call a non-LabVIEW executable (such as Windows Explorer) everything works fine.

As with the other poster, I suspect a path problem. You might try the
path out in a shell window, and if it works, copy the complete absolute
path to LV to see if that works. LV is basically passing the comma
nd to
the OS and doesn't even know what is in it, so you should be able to get
it to work.
The other poster commented on subpanels, which is a good suggestion, but
without going to LV7, an EXE can have open more than one VI. You can
use the VI Server and the Run method to fire up another top-level VI.
The decision is whether you want both to be in unique processes.

Error in Calling a dll built in labview from Matlab standalone

hello,
The problem I encountered is in the use of the math interface toolkit. I
created a dll which performs data fitting using a labview vi which i converted into a dll using the
math interface toolkit.
This dll is then called from a standalone matlab program. It works fine in the computer where I
create the matlab standalone program and labview dll. Howerver when i export to another
computer the matlab part runs fine but an error is reported when it tries to
call the labview created dll.
"One or more output arguments not assigned during call Parfit.dll"
The files related to this problem in the math interface toolkit (the labview vi, the corresponding dll and the matlab .m and .fig files and the standalone exe are in the attachment and named MathITproblem.zip
The matlab run time engine(for matlab 7) and labview runtime engine(ver 7.1) must be installed for this matlab file to run. the run time engines are downloadable from the web.
Does any one know the source of this error or encountered it before?

Hi Srinivas,
Just another note, I noticed that the Math Interface Toolkit version (MIT) 1.0 is not compatible with LabVIEW 7.1. You’ll need version 1.0.1. of the MIT toolkit in order for it to work with LabVIEW 7.1.
The LabVIEW 7.0 lvanlys.dll is also attached. I had to rename it with a .txt extension, so you’ll want to delete the extension.

Two difficulties I can see with this.
First the application seems to allocate the array of references
internally and return a pointer to that array. In that case there must
be another function which then deallocates that array again.
Then you would need to setup the function call to have a pointer to an
int32 number for the deviceList parameter and another pointer to int32
one for the plItems parameter.

Pass the int32 you got from the first parameter of the previous call as

How to display error messages and output from Matlab (which Matlab would typically send to its command window but no longer does when called by Labview) into Labview or allow it to be dumped into Matlab Command Window?

Using Labview 6i and Matlab 6.1. I want to be able to see Matlab warnings and error messages either in the Matlab Command Window or in Labview itself. Currently Matlab is called by Labview (which is working). However I would like to debug and/or modify my Matlab script file to better understand how the two programs are interfacing. It is difficult since no data or messages can be displayed currently to the Matlab command window. I would like to change that if it is possible - Labview is suppressing that from happening. If not possible to send these
messages to Matlab Command Window can I make it at least possible to see Matlab's actual warnings and/or error messages in Labview?

I don't think you can debug your Matlab script from labVIEW. The following webpage talks about this:

My suggestion would be to write a script in Matlab and thoroughly test it before calling the script from a Matlab script node in LabVIEW.

Call function in LabView from a DLL, then access global variable from DLL

I have created a DLL in LabWindows with a function and a structure. I want to call the function from within LabView and then access the global structure. I am able to call the function from the DLL with a "Call Library Function Node" and can access the return value, but I cannot figure out how to access the global structure. The structure is declared in the DLL header file with __declspec(dllimport) struct parameters.
Is there any way of accessing this structure without using the Network Variable Library?

Yes, that's exactly right. I would include a pair of helper functions in the DLL to read and write the global variable. Alternatively you might write separate helper functions for each field inside the global structure, depending on the number of fields and whether you want to do any validation on the values.
You can pass a cluster by reference to a function that expects a struct by setting the parameter to Adapt to Type, so long as the cluster does not contain any variable-length elements (strings or arrays). The cluster needs to match the struct exactly, and sometimes that involves adding extra padding bytes to make the alignment work. Variable-length elements in LabVIEW need to be converted to clusters containing the same number of elements as the struct definition (for example, if your struct contains char name[12], you would create a cluster of 8 U8 values, and you could use String to Array of Bytes followed by Array to Cluster to convert a LabVIEW string into that format). If the struct contains pointers it gets more complicated, and it may be easier to write functions in the DLL to access those specific elements individually.
If you can't get this working or need help, post your code and an explanation of the error or problem you're seeing.
EDIT: it is also possible to include a single function in the DLL that returns the address of the global variable, which LabVIEW can then use to access and modify the data, but that's more complicated and likely to lead to crashes if you don't get the memory addressing exactly right.

How a variable in C++ gets updated from calling a labview dll running in a loop?

I have created a dll which is called from a C++ program. The dll has been created from a vi which continuously runs in a loop (this is necessary because I need to control some hardware in real-time). When I call the function from C++ I can see the front panel of the vi working properly, i.e. all variables are updated in real time on the labview panel (which I will set as not visible once i get this problem sorted out).
However, I can't get the variables' values getting updated in my C++ program and I need these values to change in which way the hardware should behave ... is there any example somewhere in which something similar has been done? I have seen some examples where a dll is called from C++ with a vi function but not running in a loop. In these examples, the vi function passes the datum to the C++ software once is finished ...

I have already an inter-process communication, where there are two threads running in parallel. In one thread the C++ code is running while in the other the LabVIEW code is running. The labview function is passing the "output" variables as pointers too.

How to call another program from LabVIEW?

Is there anyone that can answer my question? I have found a similar thread where the user needed to call labVIEW from some program but I want to do the opposite.
I made a program in labVIEW that communicates via COM-ports (serial communication) with the processor I use at the job (Ubicom´s IP2022).
Now I want to add more funcionality to this program. I want to be able to program re-program IP2022 through this LabVIEW application.
The programming is done via an Ethernet-dongle. I start a program called IP2kProg, I write the ip-address of the dongle and the program-file (.elf) downloads at this address. But how can I do this from
LabVIEW, do I need to open IP2kProg or can I send some values to it via LabViEW?

Amir,
There are couple of options:
1. If your IP2kProg program has a command-line interface, you can use LabVIEW's System Exec.vi and send the commands and parameters to it.
2. If the IP2kProg has an API / exported functions, you can call them from LabVIEW using the Call Library Function Node.

After this simple code failed i started backtracking , eventually after getting "Access Violation...etc in axbridge.dll" all the time. tried delphi "import activex control" got the same access violation.
Decided to test the example from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/beans/axbridge/developerguide/examples.html........ they both crashed on execution (calc.exe and boundprop.exe).
After this failed I tested these example classes on another machine, both crashed again.....
Also tried this experiment in VC++ , after adding the class to the Toolbox , i try to drop it onto a form, once again access violation.**PS**

Calling LabView from ASP or PHP ?

Hi;
I was wondering if someone could help me.
I need to control a spectrum analyzer remotely.. The VI's are ready, and I would Like to call/Run them from ASP/PHP in order to enable the remote client to interact with the VI's via a normal Web Browser.
Tips:
client should be able to send the VI's some data(variables).
Get the results back and display it on the web page.

In that case, you might want to check http://www.jeffreytravis.com/. He has a book called "Internet Applications in LabVIEW". The book was written before 6.0 introduced remote panels. There's also an application there available for download called LabVNC that might work for you. I haven't tried it but it sounds like it would do the trick.
