Camera Raw Photo Processing Challenge

No pressure, just a bit of fun here.  In a recent thread I posted a raw file to illustrate a sky color issue, and several people showed an interest in processing it into an image using techniques they often use.
Let's do it again, with a better image this time.
Imagine you've been contracted to do a shoot of a Dark Charcoal Mustang GT for a brochure.  You drive the car to a scenic spot on a pretty day, take some photos, and now you're back at your computer with the raw files.  Your goal is to produce the following:
A 2400 x 1600 pixel sRGB image that makes the car look great.
The image might have elements you want to remove, colors you want to improve, shapes you want to distort...  Do anything you want to try to make the car appealing - mild to wild!
I've posted a Canon EOS-40D raw file here:
http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/IMG_1728.zip
Open this image using Camera Raw, tweak it as you see fit, and post the 2400 x 1600 pixel result in this thread.
Have fun!
-Noel
P.S., here's my result.  You might want to wait until you finish until you look at my interpretation.  Or look at it now and one-up me!  All in fun!

Rob Cole:  Also nice work!  You also chose a bit warmer color balance than I did, though not quite as warm as Yammer's.  However, in your case the sky and clouds seem to have less depth than I would like (e.g., the subject of my other thread on sky colors being a bit washed out).  And, like Yammer's, the tone curve in the darker parts almost hides all the tire detail, though as I mentioned above maybe this is actually a plus.  You did also bring out the depth of the reflections in the surface of the car nicely.  Looks like you distorted the image as I did to both level things a little and offset some of the perspective distortion.  P.S., I didn't figure out which buttons to press on your site to download the full resolution image.  But I was able to get it full screen, which was enough to judge quality.
I note that neither of you chose to use Content Aware Fill to get rid of the poles in the image.
I don't mind "criticism", as long as I *think* we're looking at the same thing - the business of color management really grinds me though - lots of people think they understand what's supposed to happen, but that's not whats happening but they don't know it, and they think others are messed up or wrong, and maybe they are, but nobody really knows... - been there too many times.
My take on your take:
- I agree the sky needed more work, but also: the overexposure/clipping made it difficult to bring out cloud detail without it looking artificial (next time drop exposure by 1/3 or so when shooting).
- I like the pinch of warmth in the background (most of the clouds, and foliage), but not in the car nor the road .
- tire detail: agree again - I enhanced it a smidge in the next version (see link below).
- I applied default distortion correction (via profile-base lens corrections), but no perspsective adjustment - mostly just rotated it (counter-clockwise).- I'm waiting for Lr4 to remove telephone poles;-}
Note: The next version:
(additional enhancements done entirely in NX2)

  • Camera Raw Photolab Processing

Why do drugstore photolabs always mess up my camera raw photo prosessing versus jpegs? There processing is dark and the greens come out brown. The photos look perfect on my moniter. I use Pro Photo color settings & 16 bit. Is it something I'm doing incorrectly with my settings that makes it incompatible with the automated photolabs?

You should send JPEG images in sRGB mode. Those types of labs are not equipped to handle 16-bit images nor are they programmed to work in Prophoto color space.

  • RAW Photo Processing in Different Programs

It "Seems" to me that Aperture does not recognize RAW photo processing from another program. I use Canon Digital Photo Professional for downloading and initial processing of my RAW photo's. Again, it seems that when I want to do additional processing of these photo's in Aperture, the original corrective processing in Digital Photo Professional is NOT carried over.
Can someone shed help clarify this for me - Thanks.

It's raw, not RAW. Raw is not an acronym, it is a word meaning unprocessed data. A raw file is the unprocessed data from the camera's sensors. You never even see the raw data. It has to be converted to RGB pixels before you can see it on your monitor. Any editing you do involves either (a) adjusting the parameters used in the conversion, or (b) adjusting the pixels after conversion. No raw processor that I know of changes the original raw data. The changes apply to the converted image. It really makes little sense to adjust an image in one program, and then open the raw file in another and expect to see the adjustments. By the time the adjustments were made, it was no longer raw. If you save as a 16-bit TIFF at full resolution, you lose nothing except disk space. (And perhaps workflow efficiency.)

  • Do I need to use camera Raw to process images?

Do I need to use camera raw to process raw images b4 editing with PSE? And if so do I need to download it seperately? I can't find it under help/updates in PSE

What version of PSE and which camera? Normally, if you try to open a raw file into the editor, the camera raw window should pop up automatically.

  • Camera RAW editing process

So just a few questions here, I have a process where I go through my RAW D800 photos and do general touch-ups in camera, but have been wanting to do skin touch-ups in photoshop. My problem lies in the photo sizes (45mb per RAW photo to begin with). Is there any sort of way to make a workflow that would allow me to retain the raw photos and seperate photoshop files in a convenient manner?
I'm simply looking to avoid having 2GB folder for just a few images, and wondering if there's maybe some appropriate file formats for that.
    Thanks
    Mike

I don't know what your specific needs for editing are, but if you could do your various touch-ups entirely in Camera Raw, the edits are stored as metadata (meaning a whole separate file need not be stored).  Next time you open the file in Camera Raw it applies the metadata.
I store very few of my edited photos.  I just open the raw files up again and do whatever minor additional prep is needed (e.g., sharpening) for use.
A product I don't use, but which is somewhat suited to this strategy is Adobe Lightroom.  You might want to look into that.
By the way, this is the day and age of terabytes...  A really, really big disk drive doesn't cost a whole lot any more.  Even if you DO generate gigabytes of data you could, for example, store 1000 sessions that generate 3 GB of data on a 3 TB Western Digital MyBook external drive. Such drives cost a little over a hundred bucks.  Or you could burn DVDs.

  • Can I import and export Camera Raw photos in Photos?

I don't know where to ask this question because I don't see Photos listed in any of the Support Communities topics. I want to be able to import and export Camera Raw files in Photos. It only gives me the option to export in jpeg, tiff, or png formats. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

And the duplicate reply to your duplicate question - one posting is enough

  • Displayed metadata for camera raw photos

My work flow has me making adjustments to the manufactures NEF file and then saving as a DNG at a later time. This seems about the fastest way to do it and allows me to do my DNG conversions when I am sleeping, eating dinner etc as they do take a bit of time.
It would be very nice if I could have a option of displaying in the metadata if a photo is "NEF, CRW" or "DNG" rather than what I get now which is "Camera Raw" for all file types.

The data for NEF and CRW are proprietary to the camera vendor. Therefore, even if Bridge could decode them, which it very often can't, they are meaningless.
BTW: DBG setting is exactly the same as Camera Raw

  • Can't open Camera RAW photos

I took some pictures with my Nikon D7100 in RAW format. Tried opening them in Photoshop. Error msg poped up stating it couldn't open them as they are not supported. The D7100 is listed as supported. How can I open them?

The D7100 is listed as supported.
You mention neither the Photoshop version nor the Camera Raw version you use so that statement seems unconfirmable so far.

  • Why won't my camera raw photos (.CR2) import? Jpeg won't either. Just installed Lightroom 5. Says files can't be read. Please help.

Trying to import photos to Lighroom 5 from my lexar memory card. Says files can't be read. It will not import any file, CR2 or Jpeg. Will someone please help me? I'm not good with complicated lingo either. It has to be simple for me to understand. Thank you in advance.

Are you using a card reader or trying to import via the camera? If importing from the camera then you can expect problems, switch to using a card reader.
If you are already using a card reader then  the card itself may have problems. Copy the contents over to somewhere on your hard drive and try importing from there. Make sure you regularly format your card in the camera. And switch to using a different card to see if the problem continues.

  • Why are no Pentax lenses in the Adobe Camera Raw lens profiles when processing JPG files?

I normally shoot and process raw files and use the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw for processing. Some of these files are converted to jpg for use on the net or e-mailing etc. Sometimes I want to make minor changes to the now converted jpg file and often go to Adobe Camera Raw for ease and speed of use. Lately I have gone back to some files that were not thoroughly processed as raw files before conversion to jpg. When, in ACR, I go to Lens Corrections panel, Profile tab, I Enable Lens Profile Corrections and choose Setup: Auto (or Default) and get the message, "Unable to locate a matching lens profile automatically".
I then go down to Lens Profile and click on Make with the intention of choosing the Pentax lens which I used for the photo. Here is the problem - there are only six choices under make, namely Apple, Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Sony and Tamron. I have no such issues when processing a raw file in Adobe Camera Raw. Pentax lenses are automatically detected and Pentax, along with Leica, Samsung, Zeiss, etc. are choices under Make of lens.
Do other people have this problem? Is there some setting I have missed? Is Adobe just not permitting some makers' lenses, for which there are profiles, to be corrected if the files are jpgs?
BTW, I have checked and the same issues exist for tiff files opened in ACR.

Assuming I read your post correctly, and that you're trying to use Lens corrections on JPEGs and TIFFs...  I believe there's a completely different set of profiles for correcting already "developed" images (such as JPEGs and TIFFs).  If I recall correctly (and it's been a while since I read about this), it's the same set that's used inside Photoshop for the Filter - Lens Correction tool (I hope someone here will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure I read this somewhere).
If your lenses are known to Camera Raw when you develop raw files, I suggest you will need to go all the way back to your Raw file and reprocess it from that stage.  You'll get a better result anyway.

  • Does Photoshop Elements11 with Camera Raw process Pentax KIIs Raw files?

Does Photoshop Elements11 with the provided Camera Raw version process Pentax KIIs Raw files? If not, is there another Adobe plug-in that would handle Pentx KIIs Raw?

    MichelBParis wrote:
From the specifications I have read, your Pentax camera can shoot in the Adobe DNG raw format. There should be no problem with Pentax DSLRs.
This thread has been confusing.  With due respect, you are using the right terms in the wrong places.
"RAW" is a generic term for unprocessed photo from a camera.  No camera that I know of makes files like "filename.raw".  Each camera brand that shoots RAW photos has their own file name.  I think for a Nikon it is "filename.nef".  For my Sony, it is "filename.arw".
As cameras are introduced, Adobe get the file structure information from the camera manufacturer and weaves it into their products via Adobe Camera Raw or "ACR".  Think of it as a translator that can make unprocessed camera data as viewable.  ACR marches through version numbers as new cameras are produced.  Until a camera model is included in an ACR version, its RAW files are unusable in Adobe products.
There is some concern in the photo world that specific cameras brands may go out of business and their RAW format will become "unsupported".  Adobe has tried to answer that by introducing a "generic" RAW format called "DNG" and free Adobe software called "Digital Negative Converter" that uses the same structure as ACR.  The purpose is to convert any camera manufacturer's format to the generic format.  In a perfect world that is only focused on the user, the entire world would adopt DNG like happened to .jpg.  In other words, life would be easier if all cameras shot .dng files like they do .jpg.
If the Pentax KIIs shoots .dng files, I am impressed.  I've not heard of any other brand doing that.  Nikon, Canon, Sony and Panasonic have not gone there.

  • Selection in Aperture , processing in ACR ( Adobe Camera Raw )

I'm trying to figure out if there is some way to see my ratings from Aperture in finder - on original master files.
I understand "holy raw" policy and I have been following the threads about painfull renaming techniques
    ( obvious workarounds ).
Seeing my in Aperture rated raw files in finder is crucial for me because I want to use Adobe Camera Raw for processing .
I might also use DPP or Capture One for this in some situations.
(I prefere Aperture for selection work , I love loupe )
So is there som simple way to do it ?
One way would be for example if you could give a
color label ( visible in finder ) to selected master files .
That would be fine for me .
And as I understand wouldn't make any changes to the original file ( so it would stay "untouched" ).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Just re-read your first post and realised that you want to apply a Finder label to every RAW file based on rating. This is doable, but would require someone to write an app or script, like Adam Tow's app that moves metadata between Aperture and iView.
The rating for each image is held in the OriginalVersionInfo.apversion file next to each RAW file:
    <key>mainRating</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
If you are only grading into two categories and Bridge is doing what you want, then there is no reason not to use Bridge, it's likely to be faster for you, which is the main thing.
Time - setting up a hot folder takes about ten minutes, and I'd never done one before. On the other hand I know my way around Automator etc., as should anyone dealing with large numbers of images. Most of the extra steps are to bring the converted file back into Aperture, automatically linked with the RAW file as a version.
Here's to hoping that the conversion quality gets better fast!

  • Batch Saving jpg from Camera Raw PSE 6 for Mac

I'm running PSE 6 for Mac.  I'm shooting in RAW to retain all  data from sensor.  My work flow is straight forward.
Review photos on CF card and do initial throw away of bad photos.
Download from CF card to Backup drive to preserve original photos.
I upload photos to Bridge, keyword, grade, and copywrite, etc. then open in Camera Raw and process as necessary; exposure, recovery, sharpen, fill-in, crop, fill-in etc.
Select all and do a save (default is .png) to save my changes.  Since Camera Raw will not save to jpg format I open in PSE6
My workflow can change here depending on what my end product will be but usually I'll send some photos out to share which is the subject of another post.  I can't make the program resize more than one photo for email even though I have all of the photos I want to email selected in the film strip.
Anyway my process for batch saving to jpg is as follows:
Select all of the photos (I will select only those that have been cropped to the same size such as 4x6) in the film strip.
Open File > Process Multiple Files
Fill out the dialogue box (see attachment) and press OK
The next thing that happens completely negates the automated process, I get the Save As Dialogue box for every photo (see attached)
I delete the "copy" text and save
       6.  Some of the photos turn out black under preview in finder
       7.  When I try to reopen the jpg in PSE6 I get an error message (see attachment)
    Any help is appreciated.

Stop right there!  That's a very bad idea.   You should not be viewing images that are still on the card.  Download them to your local hard drive first.  Otherwise you run the risk of the software writing to the card and destroying the format.
This excerpt is from a long-gone post by author Bruce Fraser:

Opening files directly from the camera is a bad idea for a variety of reasons*, and it most certainly isn't faster than using a FireWire or USB2 card reader.
             • Drains the camera battery
             • Runs the risk of the software you're using to open the images writing to the card and destroying the format
             • Runs a small but significant risk of USB power frying the camera

  • Camera Raw 6.7 and 7.4 side-by-side?

    Hello,
I have a Create Suite 5 Web Premium installed, which includes Photoshop CS5 and Camera Raw 6.7.
I just purchased InDesign creative cloud single product subscription, and downloaded InDesign CS6. The Adobe Application Manager is now offering to install Photoshop Camera Raw 7.4. I am not sure why, since I do not have Photoshop CS6, probably because InDesign comes with Bridge CS6…
What will happen if I download Camera Raw 7.4? Will it replace the Camera Raw 6.7, or can I use them side-by-side?
Will Camera Raw 7.4 be even fictional (since I do not have Photoshop CS6)?
    Thank you

It is here (in the Camera Raw dialog, not Bridge):
    From the Help:
The process version is the technology that Camera Raw uses to adjust and render photos. Depending on which process version you use, different options and settings area available to you in the Basic tab and when you make local adjustments.
    Process Version 2012
Images edited for the first time in Camera Raw 7 use process version 2012. PV2012 offers new tone controls and new tone-mapping algorithms for high-contrast images. With PV2012, you can adjust Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Exposure, and Contrast in the Basic panel. You can also apply local corrections for white balance (Temp and Tint), Highlights, Shadows, Noise, and Moiré.
    Process Version 2010
Images edited in Camera Raw 6 used PV2010 by default. PV2010 offers improved sharpening and noise-reduction from the previous process version, PV2003.
    Process Version 2003
The original processing engine, used by Camera Raw versions 5.x and earlier.
To take advantage of the newer processing, you can update previously edited photos to the current process version. To update a photo to the Camera Raw 7 process (PV2012), do either of the following:
Click the Update to Current Process button (the exclamation-point icon) in the lower-right corner of the image preview. In the Camera Calibration tab, choose Process > 2012 (Current). To apply an older process version to a photo, go to the Camera Calibration tab and choose Process > 2010 or Process > 2003.
But, if can't launch Camera Raw, I guess this isn't much help.
