Can a JList display a JPanel with JButtons, JTextField, etc....  ?

I've created a JPanel widget component that I hope could display on a line in a JList. The widget contains a JTextField, a JButton, a JCheckBox, etc...
I'd like to insert these JPanel widgets into a JList, and have the JList box render them.
The Widget does implement ListCellRenderer
public class VOWidget2 extends javax.swing.JPanel implements ListCellRendereras the following
    public Component getListCellRendererComponent(JList list,
                            Object value, int index,
                            boolean isSelected, boolean cellHasFocus)
        return (JPanel)this;
    }I also set it in the JList as a DefaultListModel
DefaultListModel model = new DefaultListModel();
for(VideoOut curr: voList){
     VOWidget2 vow = new VOWidget2(curr,isHost);
     model.addElement(vow);
jListVideoOutWidgets.setModel(model);I had hoped to see the JPanel rendered properly inside the JList, but instead it does a toString() on the Object and displays the text from that.
Here is my question. Can you display a JPanel based widget inside a JList? Or should I just use a JTable instead.
All the examples I find on the Internet only show example of JList rendering a JLable with an icon and text. Why? Why would the ListCellRenderer return a Component if the most complex thing it could display was a JLabel?

Can you display a JPanel based widget inside a JList?Yes.
but instead it does a toString() Implementing ListCellRenderer on your widget panel does not make it the renderer for the JList. You need to create a custom renderer that simply returns the "value" from the getListCellRendererComponent(...) method. Then you need to set this as the renderer for the JList.
But as everyone else has mentioned you won't be able to edit any of the component or interact with them in any way. Attempting to do so would basically mean duplicating the code thats already available in JTable, which is why everybody is suggesting you just use a JTable.

    Not that I know of since the iPad does not have a Thunderbolt port and I know of no adapters to go from the iPad digital adapter or component cables to the new display.

  • How to display a JPanel of JButtons on ImagePanel?

    Hi
    From the Swing Hacks examples, I can display a JButton on an ImagePanel no problem. But when I put this JButton in JPanel, then add the JPanel to the ImagePanel, the JPanel with the JButton is not displayed.
    Can someone please explain why this is?
    Here is the ImagePanel code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class ImagePanel extends JPanel {
        private Image img;
        public ImagePanel(String img) {
            this(new ImageIcon(img).getImage());
        public ImagePanel(Image img) {
            this.img = img;
            Dimension size = new Dimension(img.getWidth(null),img.getHeight(null));
            setPreferredSize(size);
            setMinimumSize(size);
            setMaximumSize(size);
            setSize(size);
            setLayout(null);
        public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
            g.drawImage(img,0,0,null);
    }And here is the code to add a JButton to a JPanel, then add the JPanel to the ImagePanel:
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class ImageTest {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
           ImagePanel panel = new ImagePanel(new ImageIcon("images/background.png").getImage());
           JPanel buttonPanel = new JPanel()
            JButton button = new JButton("Button");
            buttonPanel.add(button);
           JFrame frame = new JFrame("Hack #XX: Image Components");
            frame.getContentPane().add(button);    // WORKS!
            //frame.getContentPane().add(buttonPanel);   // NO BUTTON IS DISPLAYED???
           frame.pack();
            frame.setVisible(true);
    }Thanks

    setLayout(null);When you use a null layout then you are responsible for setting the size and location of any component added to the panel. The default location is (0,0) so thats ok, but the default size of the button panel is also (0,0) which is why nothing get painted.
    Don't use a null layout. Let the layout manager layout any component added to it.
    Also, I would override the getPreferredSize() method of your ImagePanel to return the size of the image, instead of setting the preferred size in the constructor.

  • Can't get display to work with nvidia drivers...

    hi everyone,
    on my new system i can't get my nvidia geforce 6600 to work with the proprietary drivers.
    i went through a new xorg.conf hassle to get a working display. vesa driver was suggested, it worked but slowly. nv driver works somewhat slowly as well.
    using nvidia driver 8774, screen goes blank, my monitor fells asleep, and i don't have a clue about what's going on. i cannot switch to a text-based console (ctrl+alt+F2), all i can do i ctrl+alt+backspace to restart (?) X server, and after a few second, my system seems to reboot by itself.
    any advice is appreciated. thanks !

    there seems to be troubles with acpi and edid frequencies. i tried to uncomment the UseEdidFreqs line, with no luck.
    i don't have any idea about what to try next...

  • Can my computer display 'extended desktop' with a second monitor?

    I believe I have a G4 Quicksilver 867 (2001) (bought it used and figuring out which model G4 is not that easy). I recently got a second monitor, but I only seem to have the option to have a mirrored setup (which works well). Is there anything I can do or rather what are my options to get it to show extended desktop. My video card is
    Chipset Model: GeForce2 MX
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 32 MB
    Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0110
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 1049
    Will I have to get a new graphics card or is there a workaround of some sort?

    Thanks, not what I wanted to hear, but helpful. hope you'll answer a couple of questions. I bought this computer as a second (do taxes, surf the internet, connected to my wireless router, escape my three kids wanting to use the primary). I've been very happy with it for its limited use (my primary is one of the first Imac G5's).
    1st: Do you think it's worth putting a faster processor in it? My G5 has the latest OS, but I'm hesitant to go past 10.411 with the G4 867
    2nd: Would you recommend a video card update to run extended desktop?
    3rd: Can you run extended desktop on the original IMAC G5's (1.8 ghz, GeForce FX 5200, 64 mb ram)?

  • Can Apple Cimima Display (DVI)  work with iPad 2 Mirroring?

    Hey all,
    Just wondering I have a Apple 23 inch Cimima display lying around and was wondering if I could use it with my iPad 2 for miring? I have both VGA & HDMI adapters so is there a adapter for the VGA or HDMI adapter so that it will work with DVI??
    - Thanks Zach W

    It will not work for mirroring. You need HDMI.

  • [fixed] can not open display :0?

    I don't know which part cause this error, I'm using KDE and intel's driver, everty time I boot the system, run an application, it will fail with "cannot open display". Then I need to log out and log in, then every thing will fine.
        And sometime the system will freeze when wake up from sleep state, lock screen's background is displayed but no password input dialog.
    These issues is quite similar, but I just don't know where they are from. But at least this is a system issue, not a single application.

    Sorry to reply so late
    Yeah, it's now definitely a problem, every time I start system, then every application won't open with this error. And just as I explained, they all tell me they can't open display or just with another message: "No protocol specified". The first time I see this error message is when I install VMware Player.
    And now the details of this problem: it will appear after entering KDE desktop, and cause everything with GUI(Qt or Gtk) failed to run. This is not a problem raised immediately: Cause I can run Konsole at first, but then everything including Konsole will not run.
    As root privilege cause this problem, and I use sudo to connect to network, maybe this is a bug of Konsole?
    Seems not, cause I can get out of this by re-login, this must be a bug of KDE anyway.
    That's all I can supply. In fact, I'm really confused by this problem. And horribly, I'm being used to this problem, I'm being used to log out and log in to get out of this problem.
    Maybe this is why I forgot to reply this post, sorry again for this.

    Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

    in MySQL the correct name for your encoding is euckr (note:
    no dash)
    reference: mysql manual chapter 10.9
    change your connection string to:
    useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=euckr

  • VERY annoying thing with XServer "Can't open display" after a while

    This issue is *very* annoying I would love if someone could help.
    I had this issue for a long time, thinking I'll fix it. I googled, but everybody seems to have the same problem, but no fix (only temporary ones).
    So here's the problem : I installed archlinux on my (very old) laptop, everything works great, now I even installed the XServer, which however is causing this problem:
    everything works good for a while, but after a while, I can't launch any new programs, but existing ones work good... If I try to start any X-App in an already running terminal, it gives me:
    No protocol specified
    xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :0.0
    However, all already running apps run fine, they even can create new windows!
    The only fix I found for this is to kill & restart the xserver with ctrl+alt+backspace.
