Can a new Mac Pro run FCP 5.1.4?

I've been checking around to see if I will need to upgrade my FCP 5.1.4 when my new Mac Pro arrives. From what I've read it should run O.K. but I wanted to hear from anyone out there currently doing that to see if there are any issues.
Thanks.
Jamie

FCP 5.1.4 is dubbed the Universal Crossgrade...meaning it works on PwerPC macs and Intel macs.
It will work fine.

My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes and re-boots when installing updates or new software. I can only perform these operations while in the safe boot mode.  I have reloaded OSX twice. Does not solve the problem.  The machine is brand new. It replaced a previous MacPro that would not support the new Mountain Lion.  When my new machine came in.  I swaped the dirve out of my old unit into the new and ran the new Lion update.  The machine has had this aforementioned problem since that time.  Also, I had the Legacy version of File Vault running on the old machine/drive, which I also turned off(thinking that was the problem)  but that did not fix the problem either.

  • New Mac Pro running Snow Leopard?

I literally picked up a new Mac Pro today at the local Apple Store and it is running Snow Leopard (10.6.4). Is this usual? I don't get the latest operating system on this puppy?

    Be grateful.
You don't want Lion, not today, not quite yet.
Apple still sells 10.6.3 DVD as well as a combo Snow Leopard and Lion on USB thumb drive $69.
In the past priro two OS, there was 10.X.6 DVD but not this time.
So Apple has their giant 1GB combo updates plus another 500MB of supplemental updates for other programs and patches.
Your OEM DVD has Apple Hardware Test.
Mac Pro can still run 10.6.8 just fine.
Macs that only use Lion use network installs, .network hardware test.
Lion recovery partition though can check the health of all hidden hard drive partitions as well as repair so that is nice and for $30 you might want to TEST Lion on another hard drive at some point. Better that then splurging on 3rd party system tools.
The 2010 can take a faster processor. The limitation? still SATA2 means bandwidth and performance hit for storage hits glass ceiling. That SATA 6G SSD for instance.
    Blessing in disguise to me.

  • New Mac Pro for FCP - should I do 8 cores or faster clock?

I'm setting up a FCP station to replace a 2.3 GHz dial G5 and I'm wondering which would be better - an 8-core 2.26 GHz or a 4-core 2.93 GHz Mac Pro.
Right now the G5 is most likely to choke up when rendering/auto rendering within FCP.
Based on price and the trends in parallel processing, I'm guessing I should go with the 8-core, but that old-school MHz addict in me keeps second guessing. I'd appreciate any advice/insights!

    American Flannel wrote:
I heard the new four core mac pro dusts my 2.8ghz 8 core in benchmarking
That's not exactly true. I've been doing some research in the past 24 hours and it seems that the benchmarks (like Geekbench) in which the new 4-core "dusts" the previous 8-core are those which include memory tests. Memory tests will run much faster on the new Nehelems because they use faster RAM.
But the early 2008 8-cores are scoring higher on some benchmarks which score single and multi threaded tasks and don't get hung up in cumbersome RAM tests.
As for the current 4-cores versus the current 8-cores, it seems that the 2.96 GHz 4-cores are beating the more expensive 2.26 8-core procs in single-threaded operations. In FCP, only Compressor is optimized for multithreading, so I'm guessing the real benefits of the extra cores won't be visible until both snow leopard and a new version of FCP.
Why a new version of FCP? Because from what I've gleaned, Grand Central will not make single-threaded operations run better, but will give developers tools to more easily utilize parallel processing. So it would seem FCP will need a significant upgrade to take advantage of what 10.6 has to offer. Don't know if it'll be a .5 or a full version upgrade, but I'm betting on one of them.
Please don't take this as gospel... if I'm wrong about any of this, I'd love to hear a contrary opinion.

  • New Mac Pro with FCP X makes  added text titles gibberish until rendered

While the latest version of FCP X works fine on my iMac, on the 2013 mac pro when I add a title (apple supplied) there is only a bunch of squiggles on my monitor when I try to play the segment.  If it renders then all is good.  The problem is it is difficult to edit the titles (size, font, etc) since they are not legible.  This is with a new project, standard footage beneath the title, etc.  I think this is a bug in how the GPU works in the new desktop mac pro.  No other problems seen, anyone else?
    OS 10.9.2.

I also did re-boot prior to re-opening FCP X.  Another thing, once rendered, I can make changes to the text and while it is re-rendering this anomoly does not happen (bar over rendering section with text but can skim normally).  It is only when adding new text (such as basic title, blur, etc) that it does not display correctly.  I did upgrade my memory with OWC 64 G, and use a promise Pegasus 2 R6 to store all the video only using my internal drive for boot and programs.  I have encountered no other problems.

  • How do you connect 3 HDMI monitors to the new Mac Pro running Maverics. HDMI to thunderbolt adaptors only support 2 displays. The fine print in Apple docs HT 5918 indicate  the Mac Pro will only support 2 HDMIs.  Anyone found a workaround?

I am trying to connect 3 HDMI displays to a Mac Pro.  I am using a HDMI to thunderbolt adaptor and can only get 2 of the 3 displays to work.
Does anyone know of a work around.
Is there a systems configuration varaible for type of display?

USB video adapters can severely limit graphics performance.  Use ACTIVE HDMI adapters instead.

  • Can the new Mac Mini run OSX 10.7.5?

I have the new 1.4GHz Mac Mini w/4GB Ram. I bought a Mediasonic external 4 bay drive. It's connected by USB 3.0. One of the drives in the enclosure is my old HD with Mac OSX 10.7.5 installed. I've tried booting up from that drive through the USB 3 connection with no luck. Is it an external drive issue or does the new Mac Mini not support that old of an OS? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

Not outside of a product such as VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion; Mac OS X 10.7.5 doesn't contain the drivers needed to boot that Mac model.

  • Will the new mac mini run FCP X well?

I currently use a mid 2009 17 inch Unibody MacBook Pro (3.06 Ghz intel core 2 duo, 8GB Ram, and upgraded 1TB SSD hardrive) and have experienced some lag when rendering projects while editing in FCP X.  The SSD harddrive upgrade has proved increase of overall performance tremendously.  However, I want more power.
My question is:  Will the new high end mac mini, which was just announced

You'll get less problems if you move your Events and Projects off of the system drive and on to a secondary drive, to start with.  Get a FW800 drive (I've been happy with on-the-go drives from Other World Computing for years), move all Events and Proejcts to it.
Mac Mini?  Only if you get it with 16GB RAM and the Fussion Drive (which no one has really tested for video editing yet, so I'd be cautious.  Better would be the SSD drive internally and a T'bolt drive for your Events and Projects.
But, I've not seen an reliable, verifiable reports about how it holds up to real world editing.  I personally won't touch anything until I see real world benchmarks for video editing specifically.

  • Take 45s to boot a brand new Mac Pro

    Hi Mac Pro folks
I just got a brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion. It came with a 512MB SSD as the boot disk and a 2TB disk as the second drive. What I got confused is: after powering it on, the Mac Pro takes average 45s to boot to the white screen with an Apple logo.
This is actually the second Mac Pro, the previous one having the same configuration took 30 seconds to boot. As the previous one's second drive got clicking sound from the first day, Apple replaced the whole machine. Now the clicking sound has gone, but the second Mac Pro takes an even longer time to boot from SSD.
Is it normal? Has anyone ever experienced the same thing?
    Thanks for any comments.

This is a Mac Pro 5,1 so I would expect it should take less than 10 seconds to boot.
Moreover, the SSD is the only startup device under Startup Disk.

No it should take 10 seconds. That is what my SSD on Mac Pro 1,1.
PCIe cards can affect booting, especially if you boot from one.
3rd party SSD or not? \
    firmware is current?
SSD is set to default startup disk control panel?
You've done ML Recovery and checked the SSD twice: the top of the drive to check partitions, the user volume to check the system directory.
If it is 3rd party what make?
Does it show TRIM is enabled in SATA entry in System Profile?
    What else is installed.
Does not sound normal to me to replace anything except the hard drive for clicking, and then to just zero the drive.
I would never pay for disk drive from Apple when there are better prices and as good devices.

I have a new Mac Pro (running Mavericks) that comes packaged with the unusable Pages5.  I use Pages4 on my Macbook Pro and also want to use it on my Mac Pro.  Since it's no longer available for purchase, can someone please tell me how I can get a version onto my Mac Pro?

    Yes you can.
Purchase iWork '09 very cheaply from Amazon, less than $20, or migrate it over from an old System/Mac. Just make sure you update it to v 4.3.

    • I restarted the new machine.
    • Now _it asks for a user name and password_ -- which I never specified -- so, _I can't log in. I'm locked out of my brand new Mac._ The user name and password from the old machine do not work. I can't even log on as root!
    • So, I reinstalled Leopard from the install DVD. But after doing so...
    • I'm still asked for a user name and password.
*Apple's official document on resetting the admin password:* http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
    • So, I followed those instructions. I booted from the Mac Pro's install CD and selected "Reset password…" from the Utility menu. But upon doing so, there are no users to reset! The only user in the list is root, and according to the (linked) support document, one is to avoid resetting the password for root (not that I ever had a chance to set one anyway).
So, I remain locked out of my brand new Mac, unable to reset the password that somehow got set in the failed Migration Assistant procedure.
    I'm stumped. Suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. You may not have read my entire post, since I mentioned I'd already attempted two of your suggestions (reinstalling the OS and logging in as root). Unfortunately, at the time, I was unable to do either.
Since then, however, I've made some progress:
I found partial success by ignoring the support document's "warning" and resetting the password for the root user. Doing so allowed me to log in as root and create a new user. (Disclaimer to others: Do NOT do this unless you're sure you know what you're doing.)
I'm now able to log in, but am experiencing other errors -- which I believe are related to the failed Migration Assistant procedure. But at least I'm now able to log in. I'm hoping to make further progress with Disk Utility and Disk Warrior (but that would be another thread). For now, I've solved the primary issue described in this thread.
