Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air? I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups. Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
1. Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
2. Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
3. iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
4. Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
5. Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.

Only Pages, Preview, Pages for iCloud beta, and Pages v2 or later on IOS 7 can open native Pages v5.2.2 (.pages) documents. Sending a Pages v5.2.2 document to someone without Pages v5.2.2 is futile.
If you are using Gmail or Dropbox, you will need to right-click on that Pages document, and then choose compress from the contextual menu. You can then attach filename.pages.zip, because it appears as a single document, and not a folder.
Pages v5.2.2 has a Share button on the Toolbar. Providing your document is already in iCloud storage, you can Send a Link to iCloud via the following:
The Share toolbar icon also allows you to Send a Copy to Email, Messages, and AirDrop. This will present you with the document export sheet, the same one you get if you chose to File > Export To menu item, as the alternative.
If you are sharing document content with an MS Office user, then the document you want to send them is either a Word .docx, or .doc. If they want just a read-only view of your content, send a PDF, for improved cross-platform exchange.

This isn't the fault of firefox. Firefox is a web browser, not your email provider. I'd suggest contacting them (whoever you use, gmail, yahoo, etc.) and asking for help.

Then boot in Safe Mode, (holding Shift key down at bootup; takes longer to boot this way so be patient), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

But if you look closely at that picture, you will see a possible issue getting a VGA cable seated fully in the adapter.
You may want to try a Fry's or Microcenter or other "giant electonics retailer" to find other brand names.

Why is the storage of apps on my mac book air so large?

I have just downloaded Os x Yosemite on my mac book air, and when I checked my storage my app's section is very large. It says I have 43.33GB of apps, but when i check the amount of my apps in finder it only says I have about 10GB. One day i check it's 36.45 the next day it was 43.33 every when i didn't download or delete any apps on my computer. Why is this happening?

Using MacPro as telephone: can anyone recommend an external voice modem

I'd like to use my MacPro to make and receive calls through a landline (not VoIP), using my computer headset for audio.
Parliant software (PhoneValet etc) doesn't seem to work for this.
Searching the forums and internet suggest that current Macs don't have a voice modem and that an external voice modem might work.
Can anyone confirm this? If so, what model of voice modem would be compatible? I can't seem to find any online.

There is no telephone modem included with any of the new Macs, but you can purchase Apple's USB modem. However, they generally can only be used to dial a phone or use for a dial-up internet connection or faxing. To actually use the computer for telehone calls you would need some VoIP system such as Skype.

Advice, yes. Don't get just one drive. So many people have hundreds if not thousands of dollars of media on one drive. The one sure thing about a drive is it will fail, and along with it all the files for which you have to pay for each download. Everything should be on two drives. Don't keep the drives in the same place. A thief or fire will take both.
After that it's up to you. Firewire is better for high demand such as video editing. Otherwise USB is cheaper. Many like the new 1TB or larger drives but in reading reviews on them I recently decided to stick with a pair of 640GB drives that received a solid 5/5 stars. If you're doing portable you want a smaller drive. Many of those get their power from the computer but I'd opt for one with external power source.

My Mac says I have 49gb of Photos.
That's not remotely possible! At least I can't fathom how it would be possible.
I also have 135GB of Other, with no clue what that means.
And, I see no increase in space on my macbook since telling my iphone and ipad to backup via iCloud.
I want to be able to see a more detailed overview, so I can trim some fat.

Why would you? It's a backup, not a replacement.

Can anyone recommend a good KVM switch for a PC/Mac pair?

I want to run my Mac and PC off of the same USB keyboard and mouse and use the same monitor. Naturally, to fix this problem I bought the first KVM switch I could find (how different could they be?) which was a Belkin variety. Worked ok right at first, but by day 2 I was having switching issues - the monitor kept switching between the two endlessly, though the USB seemed to switch ok. The Mac refused to sleep, though. I'm taking the Belkin switch back and trying something new.
Has anyone had any success with a KVM switch? If so, what flavor?

Personally I love my IOGEAR USB KVMP.
I own 2, both of them are 2 port units
Best part of IOGEAR is they come with all cables & power supply.
Worst part is most models dont have Audio support, so every machine needs their own speakers.

2 other USB ports on the back let you share other devices like Printer and Scanner. I am able share my keyboard, trackball, monitor and printer with my newer MDD Dual G4 and an Intel Celeron 2GHz PC I have that runs Linux.
My other KVMP drives 2 other older Macs, a BWG3 and a USB upgraded PM7600.
The front has a button that you push there is less than 2 second delay for monitor and no software needed.
The USB ports are all USB1.1 if I recall so the style is fairly universal if out of date.

Can I use an external battery pack on my 17" Mac Book Pro?

This may sound like a crazy question, but is it possible to safely use an external battery pack on my Mac Book Pro?.....specifically a Bescor Video Light battery pack which I can just plug my a/c power cable into. This would be very useful in the case of a local power failure (which actually may just happen tonight, as we are currently in the middle of a blizzard).

Yes, you can use external battery packs — but I wouldn't use one that I wasn't perfectly certain was very carefully controlled.

As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

when you opened the shared library with the newer version of iPhoto (iPhoto '11) you were given a warning that your library would be converted and could not be used by older versions - you clicked ok to go ahead - there is no updo available - either upgrade to iphoto '11 of the MBP or load your backup of the iPhoto '09 library on it - older versiopns of i{Photo can not read newer libraries

I'm not getting a clear picture at all of what problems you're seeing. If you are seeing online accounts have their passwords changed, those accounts are being hacked. Someone may already have access to some account and is using that access to reset passwords on other accounts. Change the password on EVERY online account you have. Be sure to use a strong password, and don't use the same password on more than one site.
If you are seeing changes to your bookmarks and browser history, your Apple ID may be one of the accounts that has been hacked. After changing the password on your Apple ID, you need to lock it down with two-factor authentication:
