Can anyone suggest a simple system for backing up my MacBook?

I have a MacBook 120G which runs Tiger. I also have an Aiport Extreme, which is connected to a printer via USB. I want to buy an external hard drive to create a safety back up of my whole system. I have been trawling the suppliers' websites, getting more and more confused. Can anyone suggest the simplest solution for a simple-minded user like me? These are my main confusions:
a) Can anyone suggest what type / make of hard drive I should buy in order to be able to store my computer's contents and re-boot it in the event of disaster? Will a non-powered hard drive do the job or is it somehow better to get a powered one? It would sit near my desk so I am keen to avoid fan noise if at all possible! I believe I'll need to 'partition' the drive in order to make it bootable, or something - if this is correct, what kind of hard drive is easiest and idiotproof for this?
b) I think I've concluded it's not worth binning my Airport Extreme and replacing it with a Time Capsule. But is it worth buying Leopard in order to get Time Machine? I believe I can still use the Airport Extreme to connect to the hard drive so that Time Machine would make backups regularly and wirelessly? If so, do I need to use a USB hub from the Airport Extreme so that I can still keep the printer connected? I can only find one HD which has a built in hub - the Iomega Minimax - but I have read reviews saying the fan is noisy. Any other suggestions?
Any help and suggestions about this would be very gratefully received. Many thanks
Steve

Leopard is a nice upgrade (if your computer has 2GB of memory) and TimeMachine is convenient but it isn't the only way to create a reliable and simple backup system. If you decide TM is your solution buy a drive that has 2 to 3 times as much space as you are using on your computer now. If you are using 80GB of your drive now, buy a 160GB to 240GB drive for TimeMachine. It keeps multiple backups and eats up drive space pretty quickly.
Lots of good backup programs exist but the one I really like is called SuperDuper! It will create an exact duplicate of your hard drive and you can set up a schedule so that automatically backs up new and modified files at specific times/days. With my MacBook I connect it to my external drive on Friday evening and let SuperDuper! do its work overnight. If you chose this router or another that doesn't use TimeMachine, get a drive at least as large as your computer's hard drive.
The Western Digital MyBook series is a good choice and so is the Seagate FreeAgent series. I'd avoid self powered external drives like Western Digital's Passport series unless you intend to travel with the drive. They require special proprietary cables to power the drive which are easy to lose and expensive to replace, among other things. If you can afford a firewire drive that's generally preferable because firewire is faster than USB but the speed difference isn't blazing. If you do you backing up over night speed won't be an issue.
Whether you use TimeMachine or another program, this is just once phase of a backup plan. If you experience a break-in, fire, or flood the backup drive is probably going to experience the same fate as your computer. You also need to think about taking a backup of your most important files off-site. This can be as simple as once a month burning a DVD of your documents, digital photos, and email to a DVD and taking it to work.

Hi I've list the sound on my IPad can anyone suggest how to get it back please? Thanks

    Hello Brumell,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are unable to hear anything from the speakers on your iPad.  To troubleshoot this issue, I'd like you to follow the instructions in the article below.  Even though the article states it's for iPhone, the same troubleshooting applies to your iPad.
iPhone: No sound or distorted sound from speaker

  • Can anyone recommend a simple example for displacementmapfilter? I just want a simple expand effect.

As the title says, can anyone recommend any simple displacementmapfilter examples?
I have a bitmap image of a sleeping animal that I would like to add a small effect to that will make it look like it is breathing. I'm guessing this should be pretty simple with displacementmapfilter - a spherical distortion tweened over time over the animal's chest.
    Any suggestions?

i don't think there's anything simple about the displacementmapfilter. i've tried to explain it before but i've never had the feeling that i was able to convey understanding.
here's the displacementmapfilter at work:  www.kglad.com, click snippets, click displacement.
    here's the source code:  www.kglad.com/Files/forums/displacementMapFilter_AS3.fla
p.s.  there's commented-out code in there that used a squeeze and bulge function during my early experiments that could probably be used by you.

  • Can anyone suggest a Lightscribe system that works with the mac?

I bought a LaCie Lightscribe drive. I got it home and was excited because everything was supposed to be plug and play for the Mac. It wasn't. I installed the driver and downloaded the interface to print to the disc. Everything looked like it would work as most stuff does on a Mac --easy.
But when I got to the print dialog box -- it said it couldn't find the drivers. I re-installed, updated, tried different cords, rebooted, rebooted the drive, tried a different interface. It was frustrating because the drive recognized the DVD and tried to let me watch the video in iDVD and Toast recognized the drive.
But when I got ready to print--no drive.
Anyhow, after talking to tech support I boxed it up to send it back to LaCie. Now I am wondering if there is a lightscribe system that will work with a Mac. Anybody have any success stories?

    Hi MHaddox
And welcome to apple discussions. LaCie is actually one of the better S-Drives for mac in terms of an external burner (at least from reading this forum). However, I haven't seen too much posted in terms of the Lightscribe feature itself. Perhaps one or more of these links will help (if not just come on back):

    Good luck on this.

  • Can anyone recommend a case/bag for a 17-inch Macbook Pro?

I just received my 17-inch Macbook Pro (the latest model) last week and I am now looking for a carry case or bag big enough to fit it in.
    The case/bag must have/be:
    Waterproof.
    In a style for men.
Have an over the shoulder strap (or hooks for one).
No indication that the bag contains a Macbook Pro (which would be an advertisement for thieves).
A pocket big enough for at least the charger.
Available at a UK based store/website.
    Thanks in advance!

Picked up my bag shortly after I purchased a 17" MacBook Pro.
Swissgear Ibex.  Quite literally one of the best made laptop bags I have ever seen, truly reflects quality with eas of use, price wise a little on the high end, but if you intend to move around with a £2500 macbook, this really is a great option.   Slightly bigger than just a laptop / charger, but with empty pockets its really not that big at all.
--- As I was typing this I checked amazon, price has come down drastically since I bought my bag, now around £50. Bargain.

  • Can anyone suggest a nice-looking scholarly font?

For several months, I've been looking for a good scholarly-looking font. I like Cardo, which was praised elsewhere last year; but it lacks bold and italic variants, and development on it seems to have ceased. I also like Georgia (see the new NYTimes), but it seems unable to produce macrons over vowels without distorting the vowels themselves -- and I need macrons to write in Latin.
Can anyone suggest some other candidates, for which there is a full set available?
    Thanks

This could turn into a broad and deep discussion with many opinions!
Serif typefaces are considered easier to read on paper; sans serifs are considered easier to read on screen.
Baskerville is a good serif typeface with all the formatting (i.e. bold, italic) and character (i.e. accents, symbols) options. Garamond too, and it's a little more condensed if you need to shrink something to fewer pages. Times New Roman bores some people, but is also good. In my opinion, none of these three typefaces are distractingly "different" and they all look good.

  • Can anyone suggest a app or programme for creating a simple text based logo with a font I already own?

    Hi.
I run my own company and would like to create my own simple text based logo using a font I've downloaded. Can anyone suggest an app or programme that will be simple enough for a dunce like me to create vectored graphics and reliable enough to create something professional and usable, please?
    Thanks.

I believe if you copy the font into the font folder, any application should be able to use that font.

  • I turned my iPhone3G off and now it won't turn back on. Can anyone suggest what I should do?

I turned my iPhone3G off and now it won't turn back on. Can anyone suggest what I should do?

    plug it in
in a charger or a computer system
if it does show the charging - let it stay there and have it nominally charged - the battery may be failing.
if it does not show anything on screen - try resetting the device (top power button + home button for approx 10 -12 seconds) or check the cables.

  • My iPad was logging me out so I have reset it - I cannot log into iCloud now and also my login for app updates defaults to an incorrect email address can anyone suggest how to re configure

My iPad was logging me out so I have reset it - it retained all apps but I cannot now log into iCloud and when downloading apps it defaults to the wrong email details so the iPad doesn't recognise it to update - can anyone suggest how to resolve this

Have you attempted to access your Apple ID through iforgot.apple.com ?
If you have access to the internet, you should be able to go through the process of resetting your Apple ID password via security questions or email.
Assuming that you use the same Apple ID for iCloud and the iTunes/App Stores, resetting your password may help you log back into iCloud and the iTunes/App Stores.

  • I am putting together a proposal for a Final Cut Pro Workstation to use with a tapeless HD camera.  Can anyone suggest the best camera (in the 5-10,000 dollar range) ?  What hardware and software should I include in the package?

I am putting together a proposal for a Final Cut Pro Workstation to use with a tapeless HD camera.  Can anyone suggest the best camera (in the 5-10,000 dollar range) ?  What hardware and software should I include in the package?

This is quite an open suggestion, but here are some ideas which might get you started.  There are good HD cameras in your price range from Sony, Panasonic and Canon (and maybe other manufacturers). Tapeless formats vary.  I have only worked with Sony XDCAM which seems pretty good to me.  File sizes for material shot at 35MBS are not too huge and, with the free Sony transfer and conversion programme, are easy to bring into the computer via USB direct from the camera or from a fairly inexpensive converter.  The Sony XDCAM EX3 can produce results well up to broadcast quality.
As to hardware, you'll need a powerful MAC - iMac, Macbook Pro or MacPro with 4GB or more of RAM and a good video card.  Softwarewise, FCPX is quite a bit cheaper than FC Studio 3 and of course it's 64bit and can make better use of multi-core machines than FCP7.    It's also designed to handle HD formats with less hassle than FCP7 and is matched to the latest versions of Motion and Compressor.   But you'd probably be wise to search reviews of FCPX before you make your choice - it has some issues.
A good HD monitor will be essential and, for colour correction etc, you may want to consider a second monitor or HD TV foe editing. ( A MacPro is generally the best machine to connect a second monitor to).
This should give you a good editing system, but there are many other things you could add (Photoshop, professional sound monitors, etc)
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • Can't logon to Match on iphone 4s.  asks for ID and P/w.  ID it displays isn't complete, therefore password is incorrect.  Also says I'm not subscribed to Match, which I have been for 2 days.  Can anyone suggest anything.   Thanks.  jwbsr

Purchased 'match' 2 days ago and since then I have been unable to turn on i-tunes match in settings on my iphone 4s.
When I tap the switch to turn on match, I'm prompted for ID and P/w.  The ID on the prompt isn't complete, therefore when I enter the password, it isn't accepted. Also, sometimes the response comes back that I'm not subscribed to Match and go to my computer to subscribe.  I'm  completely lost at this point.
Been playing with for almost 3 days.  Can anyone suggest what I could do?    Thank you  jwbsr...

You must sign into the mobile iTunes Store with the same iTunes Store account ID you used to purchase iTunes Match. So... when you are prompted, if the information already in the text field isn't correct change it so it is.

  • I'm travelling and trying to back up my new iPhone to iCloud. I have sufficient storage, am connected to wifi and it's plugged into a power source and yet it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?

I'm travelling and trying to back up my new iPhone to iCloud. I have sufficient storage, am connected to wifi and it's plugged into a power source and yet it doesn't seem to work at all. I'm currently in India. Could that be the cause or can anyone suggest any reason why this wouldn't work?

"gets stuck" - are there any error messages?
If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

So, you can't Install OSX to the external?
Or you can't boot from it when you do?
