Can i capture wireless mac addresses?

I need to provide our security group the mac address of all devices with wireless capabilities. can this be done? the mac addresses I am able to easily report on is the ethernet nic rather than the wireless nic.

BTW, they ask for the impossible, as anyone can plug in a USB FiFi
adapter - or tether their Blackberry - or ... so hopefflly they will not
be overly picky.
Sort of... there isn't a hardware category for wireless NICs. However
most of the descriptions include the word "wireless" so you can create a
custom report as follows:
Reports-->Inventory Custom Reports-->Hardware Components-->New
Then enter a Name for the report, select Type = Hardware Components,
selecy Focus = LAN Adapter. Hit Continue.
In the Criteria section [+] add a criteria
[Product Name] [contains] wireless
To be more specific, take a look at the descriptions returned without
any critera, and add any oddballs using OR grouping, so if a specific
model or the word "WiFi" appears - whatwever - you can catch it.
Finally select the report columns as needed.
Run.
We notice that on machines where the WLAN can be disabled, the MAC
address is absent ( because at the time of the inventory, there is no
wireless NIC active, but the enumeration of HW show one. ) However, you
will still "know" there is a wireless NIC.
Report looks like:
Atheros Communications Wireless LAN Adapter AR5212 802.11abg FOOUSER
F00F00F00482 127.0.0.1 255.0.0.0 1
Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 3945ABG FOO2USER F00F00F00D6C
192.168.1.41 255.255.255.0 1
Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 3945ABG ANOTHERFOO ( no MAC )
( Works, but I would certainly vote for a more easily to get at
category, same for broadband interfaces. )

    Hi,
    For changing the MAC address for Windows 7 is designed with some limitation, we cannot get over it. Thanks for your understanding.
    Under Windows 7, the possible range of spoofed addresses for wireless adapters that can be set is limited.  To be used by Windows 7, a spoofed MAC address should have 0 as a least significant bit (unicast) and 1 as a second least significant
    bit (locally administered) in the second nibble.  Thus possible values for the second nibble are limited to 2, 6, A and E.
    In other words
    MAC address:  “XY-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX” “X” can be anything hexadecimal.  The hexadecimal “Y”, written in binary format, is  Y:  “kmnp”,  where “p” is the least significant bit;
    p=0 --> unicast;
    p=1 --> multicast;
    n=0 --> globally assigned MAC;
    n=1 --> locally administered;
    So, actually MAC can be changed  to any combination in which p=0 and n=1;
    “Y” can be 2, 6, A or E.
    So the possible MAC addresses in Windows 7 for wireless adapters:
    X2-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
    X6-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
    XA-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
    XE-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX

  • How to capture System MAC address On internet

    Hi,
    I am doing internet based application. I want to capture user system MAC address when ever user is logged in to my application over internet. So please tell me how i can capture users mac address. please help me.. with out this i cant i go further in my process. please help
    Regards,,

    I think you're out of luck--the IP packets that come to your web server don't contain the MAC address; that would only be available on the LAN where the NIC resided. All the other components of the Internet don't use the MAC address (that's actually what the "Inter" part means).
    I assume you're wanting to track unique users. You might try cookies or something of the like.
    Best of luck.

  • Where can I find the MAC Address of a Airport Extreme ?

    Where can I find the MAC Address of a Airport Extreme ?
    I need this to extend the wi fi range in my home. I'm using a Motorola Cable modem and to extend with Airport Extreme, I need to set up inside Motorola the MAC Address of the Airport Extreme.
    Message was edited by: JPA3003

    There are actually 3 MAC Addresses on an AirPort Extreme......1 for Ethernet, 1 for 2.4 GHz wireless and 1 for 5 GHz wireless.
    You can normally see them by using AirPort Utility. The rub here is that the AirPort needs to be setup and working to be accessed by AirPort Utility.
    The other approach is to look on the bottom of the AirPort. The newer AirPorts usually have this information in very small print, so a magnifying glass will probably be required. Other versions embed the numbers in the foam mat.
    Note.....Apple uses proprietary settings for the their wireless "extend" feature.....designed to only allow other Apple devices to connect. So, it is extremely unlikely that the AirPort would be compatible with a 3rd party router if you are trying to use the AirPort to wirelessly extend the network.
    Let us know if you are able to do this.

  • How can I get the MAC address of my Apple TV?

    How can I get the MAC address of my Apple TV? I currently do not have an HDMI device to connect it to, and the MAC is not listed on the box or the Apple TV itself.
    (to answer the obvious, I am trying to pair it with an iPad, and I need to register the Apple TV for the network so the two can see each other)

    As long as I know java doesn't have support to work on link-layer, only internet and transport layers. You may write simple native code. On windows, IP Helper functions, like SendARP allow you to pass an IP address and get the hardware address. You store the hardware address on your database/file and later, when that machine is off, you send a frame to the address you stored previous.

    I haven't seen it on Linux, but if you need help let me know I'll check the Linux API's too.

  • Can I get the Mac address in Audit logs of Active directory server for the user's machine which connect to the network/Domain

    Hello All,
    I am trying to get the information of all the user's who connect to our Domain network by signing in using the domain account. For this I am using the Windows audit group policies ( I am not sure of there is any other way). I can see when the user tries
    to login to the network there is a audit event created on the AD/DC server. I can see the Kerberos authentication and logon/logoff events in the audit events under event viewer.
              However the info which is being populated in these events include :- Hostname, IP address, Username and so on... But I can't see the MAC address of the user machine/system. Is there any way I can
    get the Mac address of the endpoint system as its one of the important criteria for our project.
    Any inputs on this would be appreciated, incase if there is any other way other than group policies please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Kavish

    If you use DHCP, you can query the DHCP server. There's no builtin
    method to get the MAC address directly.

    Where can I find the Mac Address for my iPod Touch? Is it on the box somewhere? I lost my iPod a while ago, but I was told that if I had the Mac Adress, I would be able to retrace it. Help!

    You were told incorrectly.  Knowing the MAC address will not help you track your iPod.  The only way to track your iPod (and then only under limited specific conditions) is to have turned on Find My iPhone on the iPod before it was lost.

  • How can I get the MAC address

    My machine has two NIC's. I need to add another network interface, however when I do so it gets assigned to the same MAC address as the interface in use. Why is that and how can I determine the MAC address of the other card to be able to assign it to the new interface?
    thanks

    If necessary, change the value of local-mac-address? as follows:
    eeprom local-mac-address?=true
    When you reboot the system, the interfaces with factory-installed MAC addresses now use these factory settings, rather than the system-wide MAC address. Interfaces without factory-set MAC addresses continue to use the system-wide MAC address.

  • Understanding Wireless Mac Address

    Hi,
    I would like to know te range of mac address used for only Cisco Wireless, and I would appreciate to know how the ap and the controler assign the virtual mac address they use and how to get them from the WLC gui.
    WLC - 4400
    AP - Air1131
    Thanks

    As you add SSIDs (Service Set Identification(s)) to an access point each BSSID (Basic Service Set Identifier) receives a virtual mac address. This allows for wireless network segmentation as well as for wireless clients to communicate via LAYER 2 with each access point BSSID.
    A Cisco access point takes the base radio mac address and then virtualizes the mac address as additional SSIDs are added. What is interesting is how the virtual MAC addresses are selected. Pay very close attention to the 2.4GHz and 5 GHz radios and BSSIDs.
    BASE RADIO MAC ADDRESS
    You can find the base radio mac address under WIRELESS->Select Access Point
    Virtualized BSSID(s)
    I configured a controller with 16 SSIDs. Each SSID named as 01,02,03,04,05,06, 07,08,09,10,11,12,13,14,15 and 16. I then enabled both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios. Cisco WLC access points have a limit of 16 SSIDs on each radio.
    I then fired up AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer Pro to conduct a capture.
    Note: The access point base radio mac address ends in A9:10.
    2.4 GHz – Notice the first SSID ‘01’ is assigned the BASE RADIO MAC ADDRESS A9:10. The second SSID is appended with a .11 and so on.
    5GHz – Notice the sixteenth SSID ‘16’ is assigned the BASE RADIO MAC ADDRESS A9:10. The fifteenth SSID is appended with a .11 and so on.
    NOTE: The VIRTUAL MAC ADDRESSES get reused by the access point on both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz radios.
    Virtualized BSSID Assignment
    Keep in mind, the assignment or order in which the virtual mac addresses are assigned in the above example has nothing to do with the WLAN IDs that are configured in the WLC. Rather, the virtual mac addresses are assigned in order by how the SSID is assigned to the access point.

  • AEBS and Comcast (can I clone a MAC address?)

    I am currently an Earthlink DSL subscriber. I love Earthink, but DSL is giving me all kinds of trouble. Covad owns the lines in my area and they are aweful... in any case...
    I am going to switch to Comcast Cable Broadband. I have set up many people in the area with Comcast and a wireless router. It seems that Comcast does not do this everywhere, but in my area they "bind" to the MAC address of the NIC that you use to setup the connection (MAC Address Authentication).
    If I want to use NAT on my router, it will not work unless I can spoof the MAC address. This is easily done with a Netgear or Linksys router. This does not seem to be a setting in the Airport Admin Utility.
    Is there a hidden setting or a third party utility that I can use for spoofing the WAN MAC address on my Airport Extreme Base Station?
    I could switch to a different wireless router or put a small router between my Cable modem and the AEBS, but I would rather not add a layer of hardware or switch hardware if I don't have to (I really like my AEBS).
    Thanks for any advice.
    WT

    It should be possible, if manual registration of the MAC address of connected equipment is required on Comcast's service in your area, to get them to either clear the binding to allow a new device (ie the Base Station) to associate with the connection, or to ask them to manually register the MAC address of the Base Station's WAN port. I realize you would rather not have to deal with Comcast's tech support people, but (as pointed out above) the only other option is to use a different wireless router that does support MAC address cloning.

  • Can't add new MAC address to MAC ACL on Airport Express

    Hi,
    I just recently got a new iPhone 3GS. When I logged into my Airport Express to add it's MAC address to the ACL I found that the + icon was greyed out. I can modify old MAC addresses in the list and delete addresses, but I can't add new ones. Anyone have any idea why this might be the case. It seems like I can modify all other settings without any problems. I restarted the basestation, no help. I also even reset the password just incase, as you might expect that didn't help either. Any thoughts? Thanks.
    Setup:
    WDS with 2 other access points
    Mac Address Access Control set to "Local"

    If you are configuring the router as MGCP, you do not enter the mac address, just the router name.

  • Where can I find the MAC address on ATV3?

    My internet provider is requesting the MAC address of from the Apple TV 3 I'm trying to hook up.   It is not plainly listed anywhere.  Is there another name for this address?  Where can I find it?
    Thanks,
           Pterodroma

    There will be two MAC addresses.
    One for wi-fi and one for ethernet.
    It should be listed under Settings>General>About, depending on which you are using.
    If you have ethernet cable plugged in wifi is disabled so it should be the ethernet address.  If ethernet unplugged it should give the wifi Mac address.
    Apple used to put the MAC address on teh product box, but for some daft reason had not done so with either the latest iPad or AppleTV3.
