Can I connect TWO external firewire drives?

Hi - i have a G5 Powermac 2.3 DP
I have a Lacie External Hard Drive connected already to the firewire 800 port, but I want to know if I can have another connected to the Firewire 400 port at the same time (and actually transfer data betweeen the 2 external drives).
ie. are the firewire 800 and 400 ports independent?
Thx

No problem on connecting a second and even a third FW drive. I have 1 FW drive connected to the FW 800 port and two others daisy chained to the FW 400 port in the rear of my G5, still leaving the port on the front open. They all work fine and I can easily copy files from one to another. Only two issues: some people claim that if you have a FW 400 device and a FW 800 device connected, then everything works at 400 speed. I don't know if that is true and may some other poster will confirm. The only other "problem" is that my Canon Optura Camcorder will not interface via FW if anyother FW device is connected. Apparently this is true for Canon cameras and maybe some other cameras as well. But HD drives are not a problem.

  • I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when USB.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when using USB external drives.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

It is not clear if these are the same drives, just connected
    differently, or different drives?
One thing that may be happening is that the drives firmware
itself is putting it to sleep when inactive.  Many drives on
the market have ths feature and it is turned on by default
and require a drive utility from the manufacturer to disable it.

  • Can i connect an external hard drive?

Can I connect an external hard drive to the ipad? How about the new one or the iPad 2?  I would like to be able to watch movies stored on the external drive.

Ordinarily no but I seem to recall someone once describing such a device.  Mr. Google is your friend.

  • Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule for off site back up?

I like having a copy of everything at another site in case of a house fire. Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule to make a duplicate of what is on Time Capsule? I would store that hard drive at work and bring it home monthly or something to back up Time Capsule. Thanks!

Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule to make a duplicate of what is on Time Capsule?
That is exactly what the Archive function on the Time Capsule is for. Connect a USB drive and click Archive, and a mirror image of your Time Capsule will be copied over to the USB drive.  It's a slow process that will take 4-8 hours depending on how much data is on the Time Capsule, so best to start things late at night and let them run overnight.
Another option would be to use a commercial application like Carbon Copy Cloner to keep your backup.  The advantage to this approach is that once the first "master" backup is done, the application will only back up the changes on the Time Capsule that have occurred since the last backup. So, subsequent backups will be much faster, probably only taking about 10-15 minutes.

  • Can I connect an external hard drive to one of the ethernet port of the airport extreme and access it from my Mac or PC?

Can I connect an external hard drive to one of the ethernet port of the airport extreme and access it from my Mac or PC?

If this hard drive is part of a NAS device, then yes it should be accessable from either a Mac or PC while connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by Ethernet.

  • Can I connect an external hard drive, with a FireWire connector to AirPort Extreme?

  • Can't connect two external drives via USB hub to the same port.

I have two external hard drives connected to my MacBook Air, along with other USB devices, using a powered USB hub. When I connect both external drives to the same port via the USB hub, one of them disconnects with an error message saying it was improperly disconnected. The same thing happens when I connect one of the hard drives and an external DVD drive via the USB hub. The two drives work fine when connected to separate ports. Other USB devices coexist with one of the drives quite happily. Can anyone explain why this is?

External drives may well require more power than a port can supply. Also, many USB hubs cannot be used for external drives. It's always best to connect an external drive directly to the USB port. If the drive enclosure has a second USB port on it, then you can daisy-chain a second drive to the first, sometimes.

  • Can I connect a external hard drive to the TC thru the Ethernet instead of the USB port so it will transfer data faster

I Want to connect the external hard drive so that I can transfer files faster then the USB 2.0. There is a thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter that you can buy  I I just want to know if the hard drive can be accessed thru the Ethernet line instead of the USB.  I think it will work faster than the USB.  But not sure

It won't work.. the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter doesn't work without drivers and the external thunderbolt drive is not now or ever a network drive.
Yes you can plug an ethernet type drive into the TC.. or into anywhere on the network.. it is after all another network drive..
eg Another TC is a network drive.
Seagate or WD make reasonably priced network drives. But they will not have the HFS+ format which the TC does.
You can buy a NAS from any of a whole range of companies.. A NAS is an ethernet connected drive.
See the reviews here to pick a NAS.

  • Can i connect an external hard drive to my ipad?

I am getting an Ipad Air soon, and will be getting a Macbook next year, not decided which one yet but is their any chance i can connect an external hard drive to my Ipad? Im getting the less memory one because i cant afford the higher one yet my parents have offered to get me an external hard drive... With me going to uni next year and having to use my ipad in lectures this could really help :/

There are WiFi Hard Drives that you can use within iPad, but by the time that you factor in the price for that you might be better off just asking mom and dad to help pay for the larger capacity iPad and use iTunes and your Mac for the "external storage" that you might need.
Really - if you are going to purchase a MacBook and an iPad, I don't see any need at all for an external drive. But take a look here.

  • Can I connect an externa hard drive and access files from 2 or more computers wirelessly?

Is there a way to connect an external hard drive to my linksys modem and access the files wirelessly by 2 or more computers?
I have a wireless G wrt54G modem working on windows XP a desktop and laptop on my home system. I have a WD “my book” external hard drive with a usb interface. My modem does not have a USB interface.
At work I also have 4 laptops  using XP and vista and looking to have them all access an external hard drive and printers. I have not selected a hard drive for the work system.
If yes can I add 2 or more printers and print form all connected computers?
If yes, is it possible to access the files of the external hard drive (home system) via the internet?
Thanks in advance for all your help

First, your WRT54G is a router, not a modem. Different function.
Yes, you can  "connect an external hard drive... and access the files wirelessly by 2 or more computers," just not that external hard drive. You need one that supports network attachment, with an ethernet connection.
And you can print to printers from various computer, again if the printers are made to support that.
The answer to your last question is maybe. Oh, it's definitely possible, but may require learning about static IP addresses, dynamic DNS, firewalls, port forwarding, file sharing...

  • How to reestablish connection to external FireWire drive with iTunesLibrary

Hello all. Here's the scenario I would like help with, please:
I currently have a G5 Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac running Leopard 10.5.1 and iTunes 7.6 . I have my iTunes library of tunes on an external FireWire Drive. I expect to purchase a Mac Pro soon. I expect to use Migration Assistant to pull files from my G5 over to the Mac Pro. Good so far.
Everything I've read about having ones iTunes songs on an external drive always starts with the assumption that the iTunes songs are currently on ones internal drive. In my case, as you can see, that is not the case. Given that I already have my songs on an external drive, that I'll have a new computer with things in their default positions (unless Migration Asst. pulls over my iTunes preferences including iTunes songs location), how, then, can I make sure the new iTunes app on the new Mac Pro "sees" where my music already exists?
Thanks for any help you might give. I'd like to be able to get iTunes working properly from day one on the new Mac Pro without iTunes problems.
    Wayne

Thank you Airsculpture. What you laid out is the exact procedure I have used in the past. For some reason I thought switching to a new OS on a new computer might complicate things further. Glad to see that is not the case.
    I appreciate your help!

  • Can I connect two usb hard drives to my time capsule?

    Dear all,
I have bought a powered usb hub to connect two usa hard drives to my 3rd generation time capsule, as it is written in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421
I have formatted both hard drives, so now the file system is extended Mac OS (journaled). If I plug the usb hub to my laptop, I can access both hard drives. If I plug it to my time capsule, by no means I can access any disk. If I plug each hard drive directly to the time capsule, I can access each of them. I don't understand! what can be the problem? The file system is ok, the hub is powered and everything is working if I plug it to my laptop. Can anybody help me? Any idea? Thank you in advance!

A hub that works on a Mac does not necessarily work on a Time Capsule.. eg Some Belkin hubs do not work on TC even though they work on the Mac.. The TC having a small amount of ROM memory can only store drivers for a small selection of usb chipsets.. you need to buy a different powered hub..
What ones actually work with TC.. ?? Not sure.. google for success.
best usb hub airport (airport and TC are same thing)
This is coming up all the time.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3787224?start=0&tstart=0
Your problem is finding the right one, because even like belkin ones, a 7port might work, because belkin are rebadgers they don't make anything.. so it depends which factory they come from.. for a consumer product like a hub they probably care more about the outside and packaging appearance than the chip used inside. And lets face it.. all they care about in the end is to deliver it for the cheapest price possible to make money out of it.

  • Satellite P100: Can I connect two external monitor to VGA & DVI port at the same time?

The Satellite P100 comes with two external monitor port. A VGA and a DVI. Can you have have two external monitor working at the same time? Can you have two external monitor as well as your internal display working at the same time (for a total of 3 display at the same time?
Here is what I have confirm:
Internal display + DVI connector display
    OR
Internal display + VGA connector display
    Is it possible to have:
DVI connector display + VGA connector display?
    OR
DVI connector display + VGA connector display + Internal display?

As far as I know this is not possible and you can use either DVI or VGA port.
For signal output can be used only one port for external display.

  • Problems to connect two external firewire hardrives at the same time

I try to have both external connected at the same time one via Firewire 800 and the other via Firewire 400 and it doesn't work. My solution is to change to Usb 2.0 one of them. Maybe I have a problem with my Firewire? How can I check if the ports are working properly?
Thank you in advance for any help!

I'm having a similar problem. New iMac 24" with one FW 400 and one FW 800. I have a Seagate in an external case connected to the FW 400 and I got a new LaCie D2 triple interface and am trying to connect via the FW 800. Both drives have their own power supplies. When I connect the LaCie to the 800 port, it mounts and works fine. But as soon as I connect the Seagate to the 400 port, the LaCie icon disappears and I get a message about improper removal of a device. So, both drives work fine when connected one at a time, but don't play nicely together. I will appreciate any suggestions.
