Can I downgrade a new mac mini from 10.8 to 10.6?

Just purchased a new Mac mini as a filemaker development platform for work. It shipped with 10.8. About half-way through getting it all set up I realized that the Filemaker 11 software I'm using has older plugins, these plugins are only compatible up to OSX 10.6. Can I downgrade this machine to 10.6?  Or can I just upgrade the plugins on this mac mini without impacting all the users of my database who have older platforms and older plugin versions?

If you have no plans to upgrade Filemake, then I suggest you export your database to a more "universal" format such as Tab Delimited or CSV. These are text formats that almost any other database program can import. Then you can move to a new DB application compatible with Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion contains the SQL database for which there are numerous frontend GUIs.

Is it possible to downgrade a new Mac Mini from OS X 10.7 to OSX 10.5? If so, how is this done?

No. You can't install earler versions of the OS than that with which (any) Mac was originally delivered.

  • HT3231 How can I migrate to new Mac mini from Power Mac G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 (85165)?

Mac Mini's Migration Assistant requires a version of Migration Assistant on Mac G5 which isn't compatible w/ OS X 10.4.11. So Migration Assistant won't proceed with a migration. Any way around this?

Can I hook up New Mac Mini to my old imac to share the display? I want to upgrade my iMac since I can not add more memories... but thought may be I can add New Mac Mini and use that along with my old iMac.. Will this work?

If your configuration supports Target Display mode, use that. If not, not without a standalone monitor and a product such as ScreenRecycler.

Hi, I've just bought a new mac mini, its connected to my HDTV via the HDMI cable....it is showing as it should on my tv screen....but my question is: how do I connect to the mac mini via my macbook pro? • How can I connect a new mac mini to my old vga monitor? There doesn't seem to be a mini display port

I have an old monitor with VGA port, and was wondering if anyone knows how to connect this to the new mac mini. Older mac minis have the mini display port, and if that were the case I would use the mini display port to VGA adapter, but this new mac mini doesn't have one. It just has the thunderbolt port or HDMI port for displays... I've been looking for an adapter to connect my display to one of these but cannot seem to figure it out. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

The Thunderbolt port is the one to use; you use the same mini-DisplayPort adapter you used for the older minis.
    Regards.

  • How can i control my new mac mini using my new macbook air? Thanks

Hi, I would like to control and even file share my macmini using my macbook air... the mac mini is plugged into the family 50inch plasma... so getting access to it is not always easy! I'd like to play itunes, films, file share, just about do everything from the macbook air as if I was on and in front of the macmini... i'm hoping to do this from any country using wifi!
I've looked at screens - vnc client, but can;t find anywhere where it says I should download the app... is there a master to download to the mac mini, then waht do i download to the macbook air to enjoy control... also am i expected to download twice and pay twice?
I'm very new to the mac world... loving it, but lots to learn! Appreciate your help, thank you
    Chris
PS... bonus if I can also control the mac mini using my iphone4 and ipad 2 (yup, my bank balance took a major hit.... apple certainly got me hooked!)

Sceen sharing is built into the OS  go to your help in the finder and type in "screen sharing"
To set up screen sharing: (on the mini)
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
All users: Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
Only these users: Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.Click Add at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Accounts preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list and click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen: Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password: Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen.
It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • How can I connect my iphone 4 and my mac mini, running mountain lion, so that I can airplay music to my mac mini from my iPhone?  Or, is this not possible?

Just trying to stream music from my iphone to my mac mini speakers.  Any way I can do that in a similar way that I can do it via applte tv?

    No.
Since all music on your iPhone should be in your iTunes library on the Mini if that is the Mac you sync your iPhone with, play the music from iTunes on your Mini through the Mini speakers. If the music is in your iTunes library on another Mac, set up Home sharing to play the music in your iTunes library on another Mac with iTunes on your Mini.

  • New Mac mini audio problem - beeping from audio output

    Hi Apple fans
Please help me. I recently purchased a new Mac mini from my local store. It's three-and-a-half weeks old as of today.
It's an i5 2.3 with 8 GB of corsair RAM.
I like to watch movies and TV on it and have the audio connected to an external amp and speakers via the headphone output.
After a reboot today I lost the sound through that output. All that I hear through it now is an electronic beeping, six notes, descending in pitch, repeating.
I have no idea what it is, other than annoying since this happened on a brand new computer. Not looking forward to the idea of losing my mini for a week as Apple figure it out, but it may be all that's left to do.
Maybe somebody here can help me out - anyone have an idea what's going on? I did an fsck -fy already, and there seems to be nothing wrong, based on that check. For completeness sake, I ran the sound over a USB sound card, and the beeping noise was not there, and sound worked fine. Ditto for the internal speaker - no weird noise there, this seems limited to the headphone out port. I've tried different cables, and even amps, and a set of small speakers without amp. The noise is there when using the headphone jack, and it's absent when using the wee internal speaker or USB-based sound. Please help?
I captured the sound on a video which I've uploaded. It's kind of jarring, so keep your hand on the volume button.

Thanks much for any input - it would be very much appreciated.

    Hi Pascal,
Certainly strange, but I have no ideas other than having it looked at by Apple.

  • Can I use my iMac with a thunderbolt connection as an Display for my new Mac Mini with thunderbolt ??

Can I use my new Mac Mini with Leopard and thunderbolt in connection with my new iMac as a display ?

If it's a 27" iMac. I don't believe Target Display Mode is supported on the 21" model. But not with a Mac Mini running Leopard. It would need to be running Lion.

  • New mac mini and noisy dvd drive

Any time I have a DVD in my brand new mac mini, from commercial DVDs to trying to author a blank DVD, I get the dreaded chainsaw sound that plagues anyone who has owned an xbox 360. Has anyone else suffered with this with their new mac mini or should I send it back to apple

I should have been a little more specific. This happens usually when I try and do slightly disc intensive tasks, such as burn a disc, import a disc to itunes, and I can even get it to sound when I leave a disc in the drive, turn the computer off, and as it's booting it will make the grinding noise. I first thought that the computer couldn't lay on it's side as that's when I first noticed it (sort of like the wii on it's side because this fits my setup), but it makes the same noise whether I have it on it's side or not. This is also not disc specific, I can re-create the noise with different discs, DVDs, CDs when importing to itunes. Guess I'll be taking it to an iTunes store to get it checked out.

  • Imac has crashed..need new hard drive....had external drive connected...was using time machine.....so...itunes file should be on external drive....how do i import them to my new mac mini?

my iMac has crashed...was told I need a new hard drive.....meantime I bought a mac mini.....I had an external drive connected to the mac....and was using time machine for backups....so....how do i move itunes music files to my new mac mini from the external drive?

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.
