Can I have two iPhoto libraries open simultaneously?

I have four different iPhoto libraries and one is corrupted.  Parts of it are still intact so I want to clean up the corrupted library and also remove the duplicates among my four libraries.  Is there a way to have two libraries open at the same time?  Thank you! Noreen

Thanks Terence.  Any suggestion on how I could go about cleaning out the duplicate events?  Is there a way to generate a list of event names that I could then print out?
I assume that I would not be able to have one library open on the computer and one from an external HD?  (That would be too easy.)
Thanks for your help! Noreen

I have two iPhoto libraries: one on the hard drive, and one on an external hard drive.  I cannot access the iPhoto library on the external hard drive.  Yes, it is plugged in!

How are you trying to access the EHD library?  Can you open it by launching iPhoto with the Option key held down and selecting the EHD library in the window that appears?

  • Can I combine two iPhoto libraries?

Following on from my previous post - "Missing Photos" - (what an idiot I am).
I now have two iphoto libraries with approx 10% differing content, ie they have about 90% the same. The largest is around 36GB.
How do I combine the two libraries?
One way I guess, would be to dump the smaller into the larger, and then run a program to eliminate the duplicates.
(iPhoto only rejects duplicates with the same name, many of mine have been renamed.)
Or is there a better way?

You can use iPhoto Library Manager and it’s Merge feature.

  • Can I have two different libraries for iTunes?

I would like to have two different libraries for iTunes. How can I do it?
    Regards.

To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Mac
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one.

  • HOW CAN I MERGE TWO  IPHOTO LIBRARIES

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MERGE TWO IPHOTO LIBRARIES?

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
It's possible to turn off caps lock too.

  • I have two iPhoto Libraries now after restore.  Can I delete one?

A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with iPhoto and used the restore feature.  Now I have two folders in my Pictures section of iMac.  One folder says iPhoto and the other folder says iPhoto (original).  They both had the same pictures in them except for the new folder in which I had added pictures that I recently transferred from my camera.  I saved the extra pictures and added them to my original iPhoto folder.  Now it seems like I should delete one of the folders but I am afraid to do that.   Both folders seem to be working properly now.
At the time I had the problem I had just installed a new camera software for transferring photos.  After restoring iPhoto, I deleted that software.  I don't know if that software was the cause of the problem and I don't know if deleting the software put the original iPhoto back to normal.  But now I do have two folders that have the same pictures.  What would happen if I deleted one of the folders (probably the newest one and keep the original)?  Would I create yet another problem?

Yes - you can delete one - but before emptying the trash fully tes tthe remaining one to be sure it is what you want

  • Why do I have two iPhoto Libraries on two different disks?

I have two external hard drives. At one time in the past I created an iPhoto Library on disk one, and then later I created a new library on disk two since it was larger, and that became my primary library. Now I notice using Finder after several months that the iPhoto Library file icon on both drives is exactly the same file size, with exactly the same modification date and time. How is this possible? I now do not know which library to trust. Thanks.

If you find the library1 on disk 1 contains files that do not appear in the library2 on disk 2 and want to get them into the library on disk 2 you can do so with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager.
Launch iPLM, load the two libraries into it and copy the photos from library1 into library2. Set iPLM's preferences to not import duplicates.

  • Can I keep two iPhoto libraries in sync?

I have an iPhoto library on my MacBook Pro, and I have an iPhoto library on my iMac.  Both are recent models, and both are running up-to-date Lion upgrades. The libraries used to be the same, but they've diverged over the past several months as I've changed the way my iPhone, my iPad, my wife's iPhone, and my wife's iPad sync (mine now sync to the MBPro, her's to the iMac).  Is there a way to make sure that the libraries contain the same photos? How do I make sure I'm subrscibed to her Photo Stream and she to mine?
Is there a way to figure out what photos are in hers that aren't in mine, and what photos are in mine that aren't in hers?
    Thanks.

What do you mean by "Sync".
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and you cannot do this automatically with iPhoto. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
You can have uni-directional copying - files in Library A are copied to Library B - this is essentially backing up. Obviously you can also copy from Library B to Library A.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus associated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated.
AFAIK you can only log into a single Photostream at a time.

  • HT1229 How can i combine two iPhoto libraries together?

    Hi all,
I am just transferring all my music and photos new a new computer and have photos in two separate libraries. Is there an easy way to combine these?
One is a folder from pre '08 and the other is a package from post '08.
Any assistance would be great. Thanks

I exported the photos from one library into a folder and imported them into the library I wanted as a default.  Then deleted the library I did not want to keep.  It worked well.
    Not really
You did not merge libraries - you now have one version of the photos in the old library with some (probably not all) metadata  - the only possible ways to actually merge iPhoto libraries is using Aperture or IPLM - exporting is not an option to merge libraries - it is a way to include a selected version of a photo in another library

  • Can i have TWO seperate libraries on seperate disks in the SAME computer ??

    1)sony viao, running vista business.
2)partitioned hard disks, "C" drive ( 105 GB ) has the vista OS and everything else, "I" drive ( 121 GB ) has just the itunes media files.
3)"C" drive has 72 GB still free, while "I" drive is practically full of music.
4)my systems person tells me i cannot "shift" the partition, to increase size in "I" while reducing size in "C".
5)one option is to fit a new, larger hard drive, buti rather not take the risk unless absolutely necessary.
    6) can i create a "new" user, with his own library +in "C" drive+ ? this way, i can :
.. use the excess space in "C", and not have to change to a larger hard drive
...keep my classical music on "I" and sync to my 120GB ipod to play thru the home set up.
... keep my easy listening music on "C" and sync that to my 80 GB ipod and 3G iphone for use in the jeep and at the gym.
would this work ? would i have two installations of itunes , or just two libraries ?
many thanks to the experts out there who can figure this one out .

Personally, I wouldn't change the prefs to copy music to a different iTunes music folder everytime.
As long as it is playable in iTunes, it doesn't matter which drive it is located on.
Just change it to the C: drive and add music.
    1) i create a new folder in "C" for the music i want to store in C , and point itunes to this folder.
    Yes.
    2) i can move some of the current music in "I" to this new folder in "C".
Yes but it's not quite that simple. Once you move a song in iTunes via Windows Explorer, iTunes will ikely lose this link and ask you to point to it. Not aproblem if you move a few songs but if you do a lot, since you can only do them one at a time.
    3) depending on the type of music i'm downloading, i set the path in the advanced settings to either "C" or "I".
    If you want.
    But I wouldn't.
If you start getting close to full on the internal (as a general rule you should keep at least 10%-15% free space on boot drive) and get a larger drive, set iTunes prefs to the new drive then File Library -> Consolidate to copy everything the new drive.
Then you can delete the iTunes music folders on the C: and I: drives.

  • I want to have 2 active windows open on the screen so I can click either one as needed, e.g. I want to have two e-mails open simultaneously on the screen

The first e-mail will contain a verification code which must be entered into the second e-mail while the first e-mail is still open.

If those emails are from different accounts then open a second Private Browsing mode window and resize both windows to make them fit next to each other if you really need to see them at the same time (it shouldn't be a problem to paste content from one tab to another tab, just hover on the tab or use "command + ~" to switch windows).
That will allow you to login to a separate windows account.

  • How can I merge two iPhoto libraries stored on an external drive?

Today I was in a One-to-One at the Apple Store.  I want to merge two i-Photo libraries into one.  One library is on my Air, the other is on my iMac.  Both libraries have been moved to an external drive.  When I try to move one onto the other, they won't go.  Yet I am certain that while at the store today, the person there started to merge them.  He did not need the library manager software in order to do so.  We stopped the merge in order to move on to another issue.  Now that I am home, I can't get the libraries to merge.  What am I failing to do?  Thanks!

The only way to merge two libraryies is to use  iPhoto Library Manager which will merge two libraries and keep keywords, titles, faces, places, and other metadata intact.
If one imports one library into another library every image file in the first library, originals, thumbnails, face files, etc,  get imported as an original photo. You will end up with a total mess.  DO NOT IMPORT ONE LIBRARY INTO ANOTHER LIBRARY!
If you have backup copies of your libraries get them back and use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them.

  • Can I have multiple iPhoto Libraries?

My iPhoto library is getting quite large as it becomes the sole management tool for all my family & friends events (and sometimes extended family).
I've recently had twins so I've been taking hundreds of photos (and movies) of them and have created an event for each day (up to 2 weeks) then an event for each week since they were born.
I do like to have events sorted cronologically, but this means that other events - such as the imported photos from a family members visit or a friends wedding - fall in the middle of the baby photos.
I'd like to keep using iPhoto Events as my main tool for photo management as I make good use of the galleries and books etc, but is there a way I could have a second library which, say, just had my children's events in it, and another for friends and family events?
    Thanks for any pointers.

I find sending lots of photos is the only way to keep the grandparents at bay..!
Careful there buckaroo. We grandparents stick together. I may have to notify them of this thread. Congrats.
I think you'll find iPhoto Library Manager a very useful tool. It's a breeze to manage multiple libraries and copy Events or Albums between them while keeping keywords, comments and titles intact.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
