Can I import .dat files into FInal Cut Pro?

Hi..I received 2 .dat files which play in Quicktime. They are pieces of 2 movies which were converted from Video and given to me on a cd disc with a wesite.
I want to edit the movies and also lighten them up, because they is very dark.
I am wondering if I can do it in FCP? And how would I get them in there, make a duplicate (in order to save these originals) and then do editing and use them both for the website, as a mpeg4 or 3 and also as files for output to cd's? Can I get them out of the .dat file format? I have FCP 4.5.
Obviously, I know nothing about this. And I have posted this also in QT and iMovie..to see what I can do. Thank you.

Thank you.
I will try this.
I cut a cd on Toast 7 and it plays on my DVD player, but still in the DAT format.
I was also given this link
You may want to try this freeware and use it to convert the dat file to a DV Stream which you will be able to open in iMovie, do your editing, and then export or "Share" to a .mov file. Mpeg StreamClip < </div>

I will try what u have written first, as it seems simplist.
I also found out that these clips are in PAL format. Will that matter?
Thanks for the info from Apple. I am in India and will see how I can do this.

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?

  • Can not import MXF files into Final Cut Pro

I am full of anger and frustration!!! I purchased final cut pro only to find out that it WILL NOT import MXF files. How insane is that? ADOBE - NO PROBLEM. Then I had to go back to YOUR STORE and buy two different file converter applications before I found one that worked. Now FINAL CUT PRO will only import the audio segment of converted files after converting to PRORES in PAVTUBE. Are you BUCKING kidding me? This work flow BLOWS. Why the FELL does this have to be sooooo hard!  I am gone to creative cow and other forums to try to find out why I am sooo stupid that I can't get this simple process sorted out. YOU BUCKING MONEY MACHINE! How many more aps will I have to buy before I can edit CANON XF100 files in Final Cut Pro. BUCK politics! You should make your software with plugins that would allow you to edit without this kind of added step. JUST LIKE ADOBE. I want refunds for my final cut pro purchase. This is BUCKING rediculous. What a waste of time!

Good thing I still have an iMac on Snow Leopard with FCP7 where I can import these files.  I was hoping to upgrade that system next month when the new iMac comes out
There is definite upside to dragging one's feet on upgrades until necessary and this is a prime example. On a desktop running 10.6, and the XF Utility, FCP 7 L&T works reliably. And like you, that's my workflow for FCPX projects. Running 10,7 on a laptop, the EOS plug-in works well for FCPX imports – no workarounds needed. When I finally get around to updating, I will partition the HD, with one SL partition and the other partition with a later OS. Of course this strategy will work only as long as my hardware holds up.

  • Can't import mov files into Final Cut Pro

I can't seem to import some .mov files into FCP.  The codecs showing in "info" for the files are DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Linear PCM, Timecode.  I have other files which I can import into FCP and they show the exact same codecs in their info page.  I have no trouble opening either in Quicktime.

What is the origin of these files?  You may want to use QT or Compressor to re-encode them to the same codec.  Possbily they are very old QT versions.  But yes, where did they originate from?

  • I can't import mpeg files into final cut pro10

Hi, I have been given a whole load of old home video footage that I want to import into final cut pro to put into a music video. The files play on quicktime but when I go to import it it won't import.
I've already had this problem with MXF files but these are quicktime so how can I import it. Final Cut Pro 10 seems to not want to import anything that I actually want to use.
Anyone know what the problem is?
    Thanks
    Tom

What version of FCP X are you using?
Also: open one of these files in Quicktime Player, press Cmd-I to open the Movie Inspector, and post a screenshot of that.
When you say "it won't import", what exactly does happen? Do these files appear dimmed in the Import Window? Or something else happens?

mpeg streamclip and DVDxDV will convert DVD VOB files into workable DV files.
Mpeg streamclip is free, and can be found at versiontracker.com
DVDxDv costs $25, and can be found at dvdxdv.com

  • Can you import Quicktime movies into Final Cut Pro X

I have a one week old Macbook Pro retina which replaces my old iMac 24 with Snow Leopard. After my purchase, I found out that Mountain Lion will not support FCE 4. The problem is that I have a lot of unfinished FCE projects and a lot of video clips that were imported using Final Cut Express 4 "Log and transfer" on my external drive. I was going to purchase Final Cut Pro X and edit them on  my new computer but first I was going to convert them to Quicktime videos. So my question is, can I open Ouicktime movies for editing in Final Cut Pro X? Or perhaps someone has aneasier way for me to achieve what I am trying to do.
    Thanks in advance........

all of the videos that I imported using "Log and transfer" will only open in FCE 4.
Do you mean the media in the capture scratch folder? These don't open in any other application? Not in the QuickTime player?
If you mean the FCE project files, that's correct they will only open FCE4 or FCP7.

  • Need help: Can't import old video into Final Cut Pro X or iMovie

I am trying to import some footage from my old camcorder into my iMac.
I have a Sony DVMC-DA1 connected via firewire. The setup works great in iChat. We were able to video chat to my wife's computer and she could see and hear the camcorder footage. iMovie does not recognize the device at all. Final Cut Pro recognizes it. It appears in the Camera Import window, but when I try to import some footage, nothing gets recorded. Oddly, there are two time counters in the import window. The one on the left increments as the footage 'imports' but the one on the right stays at zero.
My iMac is the newest 2011 model and I am using the latest versions of iMovie and FCPX.
How do I get either iMovie or FCPX to import my footage from the DVMC-DA1?

This guy did a tutorial for 2 free ways of importing video over FW:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVqkSlaTr-k
They both should accept any video over FW. The link for Vidi is old, here's where to find it: http://www.mitzpettel.com/
    Good luck.

  • How can I avoid pixilation and image degradation when I import PhotoShop files into Final Cut Pro X.9?

When ever I import a RGP file (11.8 MB) into FC 10.9 I get pixilation with jagged images showing up on the full screen view.
Any way or possiblity of solving this problem?
    Happy New Year!

An RGP file?  Not officially supported by FCP X.  Now, if you're going through Photoshop, save it out as a PSD or PNG, you'll be fine.  And make sure the frame size matches the frame size of your FCP Project tilmeline.  If it is smaller, and must be enlarged to fit the frame, it will pixelate.  Can't enlarge digital images much without distroying them.

  • Can I import MTS files into Final Cut Express?

It seems like FCE only reads MOV and MP4 files, and sometimes it doesn't even read those for me. Is there no easy way to import and edit MTS video files?

If the source files are HD, then use Clipwrap:
    http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
and convert the source files to Apple Intermediate Codec.

  • Every time I import an .fcpxml file into Final Cut Pro X, the timeline doesn't get imported

So I had exported an .fcpxml file from one machine, which i had to format. So, after formatting the machine, each time I import the .fcpxml file into Final Cut Pro X, The timeline remains empty

Use MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free software) to convert the media to something like ProRes 422, then import into FCP X.
MPEG Streamclip can cope with many codecs.

  • Importing AVI files into Final cut creates a pop

How can I stop getting a popping sound when I import AVI files into Final Cut. I figured it must be the type of file itself but I cant seem to find a free converter to convert my AVIs into what ever is need (which is what? .mov files?)
    Please help

The very basics of non-linear editing is to know what video and audio codecs your particular NLE works with natively. FCP works with many video codecs but only a few audio codecs. Typically it works best with AIFF at 48khz, 16 bit.
You can find out all the various native codecs and formats in the User's Manual, Help Files or by looking through the Easy Setup list.
FWIW, both AVI and MOV are not really codecs at all; they are both merely containers that could contain video and audio made from any number of codecs. So saying you have an AVI file or a MOV file is kind of like saying you have a car ... it doesn't really tell anyone much at all.
Both QuickTime Pro and Compressor (which you most likely already have installed) should be able to convert to a native codec for use in FCP.

  • How to Import AVCHD 1080/60p Files into Final Cut Pro 7?

How do I import AVCHD 1080 / 60p Files into Final Cut Pro 7? And if there is no direct way [I certainly haven't found one, but I'm no expert], what additional software would be used? I want to import the files from a Panasonic HDC-HS700 onto an Intel Mac laptop [Mac OSX 10.5.8]? Obviously I don't want to compress & compromise my footage.
I’m sure a simple, straightforward series of steps would help many people with this issue.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the response!
I'm guessing you've found ClipWrap2 to be better than competing products [such as AVCHD Converter for Mac, Toast Titanium, or Voltaic].
On to the next steps. Using Clipwrap2, would I leave the checkbox "Convert Audio to LPCM" selected or deselected [and what the heck is LPCM?]. In the pulldown menu would I choose "Rewrap (Don't alter video samples)" or do I save a step by choosing "Apple ProRes 422"?
And finally, am I gaining anything by shooting 1080/60p on this Panasonic HD Camera other than a headache? [Some have suggested this is not a True 60p.]
