Can I install 10.6 Snow Leopard to a New Empty Hard Drive?

I could use some help.
*I simply want to boot off a 10.6 retail install DVD and install to an empty hard drive on my Mac Pro 8-core (it came with and currently runs 10.5).*
I will be pulling my 10.5 hard drive (for back up), installing a new drive for SL to start over from scratch.
After talking to Apple pre sales, I was told the $29 disk — MC223Z/A — was an "Upgrade" disk and would require an existing 10.5 install on the target hard drive.
The Apple rep also told me if I wanted the "Full Retail version" to install on an empty drive that I would have to buy the boxed version to get the Full Retail install disk.
Confusion at the store caused me to by BOTH the $29 disk MC223Z/A and the boxed version MC209A/A (it contains iLife and iWork which I don't need).
After scratching my head here and searching Apple and Google — I have concluded both MC223Z/A and MC209A/A are Upgrade disks.
I've upgraded many Mac OSes and thought I knew their terminology and between "Upgrade" and "Full Retail" but it is unclear on the retail boxes I purchased and their is no requirement noted for having a previous 10.5 installed.
Can anyone please take a moment explain how the Upgrade installer works (if 10.5 needs to be installed on a HD before the 10.6 installer can run on it)?
Lastly, what Apple part number is the actual Full Retail 10.6 SL Install CD?

Definitely yes. I definitely have done it. All three Sno DVDs do exactly the same thing; everything.
Or do I need to have an existing 10.5 install on the target hard drive?
I want to remove my 10.5 HD so their is zero chance SL can modify it.
You do not need to have 10.5 installed. All 3 Sno DVD's will install on a clean drive.
I don't mind spending extra for Full Retail as long as I can confirm the >correct model number...
The two disk you mention both are "full retail." The up-to-date DVD that was mailed to those entitled to Sno because of their new-machine purchase dates is called an upgrade disk. But, as indicated, it will do anything the other two will do.

Been reading a lot about downloading Lion. Recommended to back up hard drive to ext. drive, erase hard drive, install Lion and then re-install apps and files from ext. drive. Can I just install Lion over Snow Leopard without erasing all apps and files on hard drive?

If you do an upgrade install then be sure to do this first:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Make a bootable backup just in case. Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

What you get from the Mac App Store will be an Installer Application. You will be able to transfer that Installer from Mac to Mac. I have not seen it yet, but we may also be able to burn an installer disk, we shall have to see just how things work.
Apple has always been known as an innovative company. And when they announce something new folks always go nuts with reasons that this cannot work. When Apple stopped making Macs with floppy drives and iMacs only had optical drives, people went crazy. Today no one makes computers with floppy drives.

Yes - I just did it the other night. Took five hours, but it finally finished and is working great.

I say 'sort of' because I used Carbon Copy Cloner to do a block-level transfer. I just didn't want to get hung up with a Finder copy.
Give CCC a try - you have to enable the block copy in Preferences before using this method, but I was quite happy with it. I used it to move over 1TB of TM backups from a FireWire 800 drive to a 2TB Thunderbolt drive. 5 seconds short of taking 5 hours.
It should work well for you.

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If the problem remains, update to 10.6.8 and repeat.

Snow Leopard upgrade - now iomega external hard drive cant be seen

I've been using an Iomega External Hard Drive (RPHD-C) to run Time Machine as my back-up. Upgraded to Snow Leopard yesterday and - no external Hard Drive. Doesnt show in Disk Utility. Any ideas?

Disconnect the disk and power it down for a few minutes, then reconnect, see if Disk Utility recognizes it.
If no help, disconnect again, and Restart your Mac, then reconnect the drive.
If it's connected via USB, try FireWire; or vice-versa.
If still no help, try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (sometimes a plug that works fine in one port won't make good contact in a different one).

Fire up *Disk Utility*, click the Restore tab, then drag your old and new TM drives into the Source and Destination fields. Click Restore, and a complete copy of your old TM files will be made on the new drive. Go to TM preferences and select the new drive, and it will continue backing up just as it left off.

You may be able to install SL 10.6.8 (assuming there was no firmware update) if you follow these directions. Check with MacTracker http://mactracker.ca/ and download their free app detailing more info you ever thought you needed to know about Apple products.
- you can re partition partition the mac drive so that you can retain the pre-installed lion install
- or use an external drive
- attach your computer via firewire 800 to a Mac computer (capable of running 10.6.8 )
- boot the your computer holding down the T key to get it into target disk mode, it will appear on desktop as an external drive.
- install SLS v 10.6.3 Retail version from the DVD onto the new partition or external drive where you want Sl installed.
- install the 10.6.8 combo update.

Can I install the ordinary Snow Leopard onto a Mac Mini Server?

I have a just-purchased 'Mac Mini with Snow leopard Server' (i.e. the model with two hard disks and no superdrive). I also have a copy of Snow Leopard - the ordinary version, not the server version. Although you might think this a weird thing to do, I may want to install 'ordinary' SL onto the Mac Mini. Is there likely to be any problem with that (I am hoping that the result will be more or less identical to purchasing an ordinary Mac Mini, except that I would have 2 disks instead of one and a superdrive)?

How do I install Snow Leopard onto a COMPLETELY BLANK hard drive?

My Macbook Pro's hard drive bit the dust last week so I bought a new one. This has NOTHING on it. No operating system, no files, nothing. I have a Snow Leopard installation disk avaliable to me. I can put in the disk and it will show the Apple logo but before long my computer beeps at me. I looked up that problem and it seems that there is something wrong with the RAM, however, there was nothing wrong with it before my hard drive died, so I can't imagine what could be wrong with it. I tried to take it out and put it back in but that didn't work. I have tried starting up with the alt/option key, but I cannot get my computer to connect to my wifi, not even through a direct connection. I "stole" a neighbor's and clicked on the internet recovery option (the only one that showed up on the screen. It then said, "Internet Recovery Starting. This may take a while." And the little globe started to spin. But then the globe stopped and there was a triangle with an exclaimation point in the middle of it. Underneath it said "apple.com/support" and underneath that in pale letters it says "-1005F". I have NO idea what that means. I tried typing it into my internet browser (on a different computer, of course), but to no avail. I have given up for now, with the hope that someone out there holds the answer. Thank you so much for reading and I hope you know what to do because I am going absolutly insane.

Can I run Tiger and Snow leopard on a new macbook pro 15"

I have a Macbook running Tiger, soon to be replaced (I hope) by a
15" Macbook Pro Sno Leopard. Can I partition the drive on the MBP to run
Tiger also, as I have Adobe Creative Suite 2 and can't afford to upgrade that too. And I really don't want to run to computers.

Snow Leopard and Lion on external hard drive

I successfully installed Snow Leopard on an external hard drive in one of the partitions. I am also able to boot from the Snow Leopard on the partition, access the internet, get my email and have successfully installed Evernote. I am also able to access Apple Store and needed items on my laptop.I am using a MacBook Pro as the laptop so it starts up with Snow Leopard from the external drive and I can still access my original info because I used Super Duper to clone my hard drive (running 10.5.11). My question is when I access email and the internet when Snow Leopard is booting does that change the settings on my MacBook Pro. All was fine for a couple of days but today I was unable to access the Internet or get my email when I booted from 10.5.8 on my laptop. (The external drive was not connected.) I was able to figure out what to do to get everything working again but I'm not sure I could repeat it. So, if I boot from an external drive does that change the settings on the laptop? If so is there a standard way to change things back. I did make screen shots of the settings on my laptop once I got it working again.

Unless you are using the same common home directory for running both versions of the OS (which is possible) then when booting from two distinct volumes, and it doesn't matter where they are, doing something on one does not affect the other.
You have two home directories, one on each volume. You are using the one on whichever volume you booted from. So if you defined your mail settings on each exactly the same way (pop, smtp, etc) I would expect them to behave the same way. Similarly for the network settings.
