Can I install Safari 1.2 on OS X 10.3?

I am using a G4 PowerBook3,5 with OS X 10.3 and got the unhelpful message "Unable to install Safari 1.2 on this computer".
There was no other explanation.
According to the Safari download page, I should be able to install 1.2.
Any ideas?
Jolyon

Thanks for replying, sorry about the delay.
The operating system is just 10.3, no extra suffixes.
The version of Safari I am using is 1.1 and I am having some problems with some javascript on some web-sites, mostly with drop-down menus. This is not a life and death situation, merely a nuisance.
I think I will update the operating system and see if that helps. How far can I safely update the OS on this machine, which is now a few years old?
Jolyon
Hi Jolyon,
Technically yes, you should be able to. What
particular version of OS X are you running? 10.3.1,
10.3.2, etc? You can check via the Apple icon in the
top left of the screen -> About this Mac.
If you installed a later version of Safari onto your
machine at some point in the past, you will have some
more recent WebKit files installed (these files
contain the code that draws the webpage for Safari
and Mail.app) and the installer checks to see the
version of these too. If they are more recent than
the installer then it won't procede.
Before going any further, can you clarify if you
already have another version of Safari installed or
not, and why are you trying to install version 1.2?
If we know the full picture we'll be able to offer
more specific help.

  • I can't install Safari!!!

A couple of months ago I had a Kernal panic. The panic seemed to be associated with letting the computer go to sleep, using a screen saver kept my computer up. After the panic opening safari would panic the computer immediately. So I uninstalled safari, and started using firefox.
I have since found and used and app called applejack which seems to have to cleared up my original problem.
But, I can not install Safari back on this machine. When I get to the point that I have to choose where to install safari, neither of hard drives can be used.
    Any Ideas?

    Hi
Thanks to Andy Ball in this forum, a simple method exists for installing Safari 2.0.4.
First, open Firefox and go to this site to obtain a zip file of Safari. On this site page, select "free", then on the following page you'll need to wait about 30 seconds for the target site options to appear. Select one of them, fill in the "alpha/numeric prompt", and the file will download.
After the new Safari application has mounted on your HD, go to the Finder and move the Safari.app to your Applications folder.
Go to the Utilities folder>Disk Utility and "repair permissions".
Drag a copy of Safari from your applications folder to the dock to create the icon.
    Start Safari.

  • Stuck in a limbo: can't install Safari or Lion/Mountain Lion, can't access App Store

If someone would take up this challenge and attempt to solve it with me, I would appreciate it! I have troubleshooted for 2 days now to no avail.
    This is what happened:
    1) I accidentally installed Safari 6.0, even if I have Lion 10.7. which doesn't run the new version
    2) This disabled my use of Safari and my access to App Store
    3) With a combination of AppDelete + Pacifist I tried deleting all Safari files, and re-installing old Safari 5.4 from scratch.
I rebooted, repaired permissions and did a disk check.
    4) Rebooted again, tried to open the newly installed Safari, but it gives an error:
"Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X."
    5) At this point I thought to revert back to a previous point in Time Machine. Unfortunately all the points in Time Machine somehow showed Safari 6.0 (even a month-old points), so reverting back to an old point didn't help.
    6) I try logging into AppStore to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but I can't do that, since it needs Safari to run and I don't have a Safari anymore!
    7) Now I tried re-installing Lion from restart + cmd+R, and it asked for Apple ID to start the installation.
--> At this point I am getting desperate, as this computer was purchased second-hand, so I don't have the Apple ID used to install Lion!
    8) I try searching for Apple's official support, but obviously my warranty has expired, besides it's based in another country so they can only call cellphones from that country!
So I cannot enter App Store; reinstall Safari; reinstall Lion; or upgrade to Mountain Lion. I have no access to Apple official support. I currently work in a developing country with limited access to any MAC support.
I don't know what to try anymore!
    - How can I enter App Store without Safari?
    - How can I reinstall Lion without the original Apple ID?
    - How can I upgrade to Mountain Lion without App Store?
    I'm STUCK! Please help!!

    Anyone?
I finally managed to download the newest combo update and installed it successfully!
However Safari still doesn't open. It keeps saying the following:
Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.
I also finally got access to App Store: but the download of Mountain Lion doesn't complete, because it seems to need Safari.
So I'm still stuck with the two issues:
    i) Safari doesn't work, and I can't get it to work unless I can reinstall/upgrade the OS.
ii) I can't upgrade the OS without Safari!
--- unless someone knows a way to install Lion/Mountain Lion _without_ Safari??
    Thanks for all your help!

I would like to purchase apple tv to make my HD tv in to smart TV. As i browsed the features of apple tv I dint see any browser like safari or Google chrome available in apple TV. So I want to know that is it possible to install the internet browsers in apple TV?

no you can't install apps on Apple TV and it does not have a browser
but if you have a supported iOS device like iPad or iPhone or iPod touch you can airplay mirror it's screen to the tv using the appletv
and if their screen is displaying a browser then you got what you wish

  • Can't install Safari 8.0.4 on Yosemite 10.10.2

    Hi!
I've been having problems with Safari 8.0.4. First Yosemite installed Safari along some security updates, but after restart I got a error message saying some installation failed and it was Safari. So I downloaded the standalone installer from the forum and I couldn't get it to install, I always get this installation failed message telling me to contact Apple. After that I've tried to reset App Store and got Safari installed without any error message, but my Safari is still on version 8.0.3.
In the App Store updates section it shows that Safari 8.0.4 is installed.

  • Can't install safari extensions, I get the error message "Safari can't install this extension, An error occurred while installing the extension "Pin It Button"." Any suggestions?

Every time I try and install an extension for Safari I get the error message "Safari can’t install this extension, An error occurred while installing the extension “Pin It Button”." I have all the latest updates, working on OS X Yosemite v 10.10.2 / Safari v 8.0.3. Any suggestions?

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to search for an item named "Safari Extensions List". If found, delete it. Quit Keychain Access.
    Quit and relaunch Safari.

  • Can't install Safari, Leopard thinks im on 10.5.1 but im on 10.5.4

    Hello!
I just removed the Safari 4 dev preview and Safari disappeared so i tried to install it again but i can't It says i don't have 10.5.2 but i got 10.5.4
What can i do without reinstalling Leopard??
    Any help would be appreciated!

I have the exact same problem. Safari would not open a window, it just wouldn't open anymore. I thought that by deleting safari and reinstalling it would solve the problem. I can install Safari 3.0.4 but when I try to install the update (3.1.2) it will give me a message that I need a version Mac OS X 10.5.2 or posterior, but I have 10.5.4.

  • Can't install Safari on Networked Windows XP PC

    Hi all,
Just wondering what people thought of this:
At my workplace the computers are all PCs, running Windows XP over a Novell network. Sorry, I don't know an awful lot about networks, and can't tell you what KIND of network it is.
Being an avid Mac user at home, having to use Internet Explorer at work is an absolute torture. I tried to download Safari 3.0 for Windows, and whilst there were no problems opening the installer file, soon after opening the installation file it says install cannot continue because I 'do not have the administrator privileges.'
Just wondering why that is with Safari? Because installing Firefox 3 does not result in this issue? How can Safari for Windows installation be customised so that it can be installed, even though I'm not an administrator?
What is it that Safari does during installation that threatens the Windows XP network so much?
    Curious...

It is possible that the network administrator has restricted installing applications or "Programs" onto the computers. I dont know allot about the installers of Firefox and safari but i would say your best best is to get a "portable" application for web browsing . You will be out of luck getting a portable version of Safari as its closed source and as such it is not posible for anyone to modify it to be a portable app. Your best bet is to stick with firefox.
    http://portableapps.com/
This page has a list of many windows portable apps you can use off a USB stick or from any folder you have write access to.
I know how you feel allot of places use Internet Explorer my work still use IE 5.5 :P and its so poor its silly i always carry as USB stick with portable firefox on.

  • HT6104 Can we install safari 7 in lower OS versions like Mountain lion or Lion?

Is it possible to install Safari 7 in Mac Mountain Lion or Lion OS?

    Yes you (we) can!
Just download the latest Mavericks update 10.9.5, open the .pkg with pacifist and extract Safari 7 to Desktop. Right-Klick it and choose "Show Package Contents". Now open info.plist with TextEdit, search for "LSMinimumSystemVersion" and replace "10.9" with "10.8.5". Keep in mind that extensions will not be loaded because of the passwd from Keychain's "Safari Extensions List" isn't the one needed.
    Cheers!

  • Can't install Safari 1.3.1 Update

Having previously trashed Safari & gone back to 1.2....I tried to work back up to current status. Permissions Repair done before and after. First, I applied the 10.3.9 Combo updater. Then, when trying to do the 1.3.1 update (and 1.3.2) I get that bloody msg telling me I can't install...that the system can't use this software. I know there was a previous thread on this, but didn't see a solution to the problem. How the devil can I get back up to 1.3.2???????

Permission repair after the removal of the packages. and a restart of the computer. I am not speaking about after the 10.3.9 Combo Update.
I have the Security Update it is not evil. The perm. repair should be run after every software update you do. Combo, run perm repair, security run perm.

I would resolve the Kernel panics first.
I thank you once more for trying to help, but I'm still open to anyone's assistance in getting the 1.3.1 & 1.3.2 updates done.
Your welcome, however if you have those package in your Receipts then the software updater will recognize them and the install of the updates you are looking to do will not happen. Perhaps some one will pipe in with more help for you.

  • Can't install Safari AdBlocker

I have now downloaded and installed (I thought) Safari AdBlocker from four or five different sites. Each time the process ends with the words, "Successfully Installed". The problem is that it has yet to be installed. I say that because I have searched for it with Spotlight many times, and I have also looked for it independently in my Hard Drive. Nothing. I can't find "Safari AdBlocker  (It's called AdBlock" someplaces) anywhere. From browsing the Internet, I see that I'm not the only one having problems with this, so I came here in the hope that someone here knows the answer. Oh, one more thing. I keep seeing something that seems to indicate that when I open Safari, I should see AdBlocker loading. That has never happened.

    Niku wrote:
hasn't an ad blocking program always been installed in Apple operating systems?
Safari has a pop-up blocker. Safari > Preferences > Security > Block pop-up windows. There's no ad blocking function in OSX.
    Now what?
In your post you said you downloaded "Safari Adblocker" from 4 or 5 different sites. That's strange, because there's only one app called Adblock, and it seems like it's only available at one site, from the developer: AdBlock - Browse faster. Ad-free. It's not called Safari Adblock, or Safari Adblocker. It's just called Adblock. I have Adblock 2.6.34 installed, and it works. Do you have that same version?
I'm not sure what you installed, what version, and where you installed it from. What were these "four or five sites"?
    Just so I'm clear:
Is Adblock in the list of Extensions in Safari Preferences? Is it enabled?
If it's enabled, try unchecking the box, and then checking it again.
What kind of ads are you seeing? (Adblock can't block in-line ads, like the ones that are at the beginning of YouTube videos (or annoyingly, in most embedded videos in most websites these days).
Adblock also has some learning capabilities, which means that sometimes it can't tell if something is an ad or not, but you can help it learn by right-clicking or control-clicking on the ad and selecting "Block this ad". For me, though, it works well, and I've only used the "Block this ad" thing once or twice.
If you do have Adblock installed, and if it's not working, try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it.
If it's still not working then maybe you have some other extension or internet plugin that is interfering with it. You could try disabling your other extensions and uninstalling your internet plugins.
Maybe there's something wrong with your Safari installation which is interfering with it, in which case you could try reinstalling Safari.
If you have any third party "cleaners", "optimizers", or other "maintenance" utilities installed, for example, CleanMyMac or MacKeeper, this may also be the problem. If you do, you could try uninstalling them and see if that makes a difference. Uninstalling them might not fix the problems they have caused, however, and you may need to do a clean reinstall of Mavericks.
I'd also try some basic Mac troubleshooting maneuvers, like booting into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and using Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery

  • Can not install Safari 3.1 although I run OS X 10.5.4

When trying to install the newest Safari 3.1 this is the message I get: "You cannot install Safari on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or newer.". And I do have OS X 10.5.4. I have tried several times, with fresh downloaded Safari files and get always the same message. And unfortunately I deleted the older Safari in the process, so now I have no Safari whatsoever. Anybody know what I need to do in order to install it?

I am ALSO in the same boat. I have OS X Leopard 10.5.4 with the latest software updates. I recently uninstalled Safari from my system because I wanted to exclusively use Firefox. I decided to reinstall it after about a week, so I went to Apple.com > Downloads, and downloaded the latest version of Safari. When I tried to install, I had the same problem as everybody else reporting this problem, by getting the following error message "You cannot install Safari on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or newer."
I ran the custom-install of Safari from my OS X Leopard install DVD, and when running "Sofware update" from the Apple menu in my OS, it tells me I have the latest software. So, once again, after I had Safari installed from my Leopard DVD, I downloaded the latest Safari pkg. from Apple.com, and it is giving me the same error.
WHY is this happening?? Why can't I upgrade from 10.0.4 to 10.1, even though I have Leopard and Safari installed again from the Leopard disk itself? I thought Apple's objective is to make everything so easy and hassle-free, unlike Windows/PC, which is why I switched nearly a year ago.

  • Can't install Safari 8.0.4

Hello, I got a notification to Download and install iPhoto and Safari 8.0.4 but It doesn't let me install Safari. iPhoto is fine. on the list of installed software it lists 8.0.4 several times but when I check the version of Safari that I have, it is 8.0.3. Does anyone have a solution to this? Thanks.  I have a mid-2010 Macbook running Yosemite.

What happens when you try to install it? Does it download? Did you quit Safari before trying to upgrade? Try booting into the Safe Mode to see if you can install it there.

  • Can't Install Safari 1.2

My sister came to me with a question about Safari on her iBook, and in investigating I may have made it worse. Basically every time Safari would open, it would open a "Contents" folder. I thought this odd, and tried tract down where the folder was. For some reason the computer was registering Safari as a folder and not an application, and the "Contents" folder (as near as I can now tell) was the guts of the program. However, not realizing this at the time, I moved the folder to the Desktop. Problem was that as soon as I did this, the application failed to operate. It was like I separated the soul and the body of the program and despite all my efforts I couldn't get them back together. In the end I tried to download the Safari installer and reload it. This didn't work and I suspected it was because I had yet to trash the remains the of the old program. So I trashed the program and then tried to install it again. It still says that it can't install on the computer and I have no idea why a) Safari decided to have an out of body experience and b) why I can't reinstall Safari.

    Hi,
What version of Mac OS X is your sister using on her iBook?
If she's using 10.4.x then you should re-install Safari from the Tiger installation DVD.
    The installer is at /System/Installation/Packages/Safari.pkg
    a) Safari decided to have an out of body experience
This is only a guess, but it sounds like your sister might have moved Safari from the /Applications folder, then updated her system with an update of Mac OS X. Historically the installers haven't been too good at finding versions of programs if you move them from their default location. This results in partial updates being applied to the default location and causing various amounts of 'weirdness.' That's just a guess as I say though.

  • Can i install safari 4 on external drive to try it out?

This is probably a dumb question, but hey, I have asked dumb ones before, what's one more?
I have Safari 3. Would like to try Safari 4, but from what I have read, I am not sure I will love it. I have an external hard drive. Would it be possible to install Safari 4 on the external and keep Safari 3 on my internal until I decide which I like better?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jane:
In addition to the good feedback from It, if you want to clone your system, I like SuperDuper ($28 at www.shirt-pocket.com). If you use Time Machine, you could also restore to a previous copy if you did not like Safari 4.
FYI, I have found a couple of small issues with Safari 4(that I have reported), but no "show-stoppers." I use Firefox as a workaround if I ever have a Safari-specific issue.
