Can I move the MAIL folder off my System drive?

Hi there,
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and using Apple's MAIL email.
I have a very small 32gig SSD on my Mac G5 8 Core and the folder in USERS>(My name)>LIBRARY>MAIL is 11GB in size. I'd like to move this to a different internal drive, but I imagine if I do so I will find that my mail doesn't work.
Can anyone help me with the correct procedure for getting this folder off my SSD and onto a different internal drive?
Maybe if I moved the MAIL application and that MAIL folder to a different internal drive it would work ok? Or can I continue to run the MAIL program from the SSD and move the MAIL folder, the program will find it?
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
With thanks,
Harry.

  • How can I move the passwords folder on a external drive?

    Hello!
    I have a simple question:
I do not want the passwords and filled forms data stored on my computer but rather on a flash drive. So, when I am done with the computer, I unplug the flash drive and take all sensitive data with me.
How can I do it? How can I change the default location C:\Documents and Settings\sun\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles to the flash drive?

That preference does not exist by default. Right-click in the about:config window and choose New > String, set it name to '''browser.cache.disk.parent_directory''' and value to where you want the cache. (Note there is an underscore in the name)

  • Can I move the application folder in 10.7

I have recently upgraded to an iMac 27" with the i7 - now using 256 SSD plus a 2 TB drive.  When moving "lots" of applications from my older MacPro I will need more room than 256 - can I move the App Folder to the 2 TB drive and continue to have full access?

It causes problems for backing up if you do.  Better to get a larger internal hard drive*:

Or archive documents you don't use frequently away from the internal hard drive.   But make sure you always have at least two copies of your data at all times.

  • HT1229 Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD? Will it work the same way after moving onto an external HDD? do I then need to have the external connected at all times, even when I don't use iPhoto?

I have a macbook pro, but the amount of pictures I have now exceeds 500GB
I want to have all the pictures in iPhoto, so I could see them and edit them in iPhoto.
Which means... I need the iPhoto file folder in an external HDD to use iPhoto that way.
Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD?
Will it work the same way, as if the iPhoto folder is on the internal drive?

    yes
    yes
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Can I move the Pictures folder to a different internal drive?

I would like to move the Pictures folder that shows up in the Finder sidebar from my Macintosh HD (boot drive) to a separate internal drive (Media Drive) where I store all my media files. I want to do this so that when I want to save a photo from a web site or email I can click on it, select the Pictures folder, have it saved to the Pictures folder on my Media Drive rather than on the Macintosh HD (boot drive) where it currently resides. I have tried dragging and dropping the folder from the Macintosh HD (boot drive) to the Media Drive but it does not work. Ideas would be most welcome. Thanks

    Baltwo,
a question - perhaps it might be safer to create a symbolic link to the relocated folder on the external drive instead of an alias. Otherwise Unix based image editors like GIMP will not be able to see this new "Pictures" folder in the file chooser dialogue.

    Hi,
Yes, you can move this folder - in fact it's not a bad idea to also save a copy to a dvd or flash drive.
The swsetup folder contains all the drivers and the majority of software that comes with your machine - if you use Recovery Manager to reinstall software/drivers, this is the folder accessed, so you would need to move it back before using this option.

  • I have so many photos I only have 1G of memory left.  How can I move the photos to my external hard drive that is connected to my iMac?

I have so many photos on my Mac I only have 1G of memory left.  How can I move the photos to the external hard drive that is plugged into my iMac.

1GB? It's a miracle your Mac is running at all!
This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I am over capacity on my #GS iPhone and I have  a very large amount of audio space that I think might be taken up by season one of Downton Abbey. I have tried to copy and save episodes to my external hard drive but I get a message saying I "don't have permission". How can I move the six episodes out iTunes ??

EXTREMELY poor idea! Leave the apps on the internal HD. You can move files and libraries from iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, Aperture, etc.. to an external HD but leave the apps them self on the internal HD.
Did you empty the Trash after moving all that data to the EHD??

  • How can I move the .thunderbird folder so I can sync it with Insync and 3 other computers.

I have had to move from Ubuntu One to Insync and the .thunderbird folder needs to be in the Insync folder to sync with all 3 computers. Is there a way to move it so that I can sync all files and settings?
I can move mail storage and local folders but what about calendar and other data?
    I'm using Ubuntu 13.10

have you considered using imap mail and synchronized calendars to a server. That is really how it is meant to work. Thunderbird has no idea about network drives or other programs interfering with it's files and they almost invariably cause massive headaches for the parties involved.

  • New quicktime player:  can I move the play buttons off the video?

Can I organize the Quicktime player like the old version?  With the play buttons / time line on the bottom, outside and away from the video?
E.g., I do not want the play buttons / time line to "float" over the video window. It's distracting for times when I need to pause and scroll over video to find certain spots.  It is really in the way.

Wow, that is unfortunate.  It's really annoying to have that in the screen.

  • FW vs. USB & can you move a backup folder to a larger drive later?

I'm about to get an external drive to use for TM. Is Firewire (400 or 800) going to be noticeably faster than a USB drive? I ask because I would think that a single external platter can only transfer so much data to the disk at once and USB might be fast enough to keep the drive maxed out as far as write speed.
I have a 320 GB internal drive in my iMac and have used 125 GB so far (195 GB free). I'll probably get a 750 GB external drive for TM. If it fills up in 6 months (give or take - I don't add/change that much data per day) can I then buy a larger, say 1.5 TB drive and copy the TM backup folder to the new drive and have the TM app see all the old backups on the new drive?
    Thanks in advance

    engstrom,
Best I can tell, drives are currently topping out at about 1.5 Gbs/sec. This is for 7200 RPM external drives, connected on an eSATA bus. So yes, a very large benefit can be realized by using your best bus for connecting an external drive.
I have just such a drive, but I am using its Firewire 800 functionality (I haven't yet picked up an eSATA Expresscard). In real-world use, it will transfer about 3 GBs (that's gigaBytes) a minute, over the Firewire 800 bus. I am interested to find what it will do over eSATA, once I pick up a card.
If transfer speeds are a concern to you, I do recommend that you get the best drive you can, and use the best connection you can. USB will be somewhat slower than FW 400, and FW 400 is half the speed of FW 800.
I'm not certain that you're going to be able to transfer the backup on one drive to another. You may need to start over with a new "full" Time Machine backup, then continue from there. There's no problem with copying the Time Machine backup to another drive, and there is no problem with then changing Time Machine's preferences to use this new drive. What I'm not sure about, however, is that Time Machine will then recognize the existing backup as "its" backup, and not some other machine's. Not having had the chance (or cause) to test this yet, I'm just not certain.
Even if it turns out that Time Machine will not recognize the copied backup, it's not that big a deal. Your older backup will still remain on the old drive; you'll just have your backups spanning multiple drives. In the end, this might be better anyway, since more space will be available for your future backups.

  • Something wrong with my email it keep eat up my hard drive.  how can i get into the system and delete the mail folder

how can I delete the mail folder in the hard drive.. it keep redownload the emails and eat up my hard drive

If you have your mail set up as an IMAP account, then it will download everything that is in your Inbox (on the online site/server) again and again. You can move your emails to another folder online after you've read them or you can also delete them online after you've saved the ones you want to keep.
If you have your mail set up as a POP account, emails are downloaded once and then reside on your hard drive; you can indicate in Mail Preferences > Accounts if you want the messages online deleted immediately or after one week, etc.

  • Mail does not accept that the Mail folder is on an external drive

On Snow Leopard and on Lion, I have moved the Mail folder (from the Library) to another location (on an external drive) which happen to also be my Dropbox folder. In these two OS, it worked well so my Mail folder is portable and also online. I have used aliases that lead Mail from my Library folder to the Mail folder on my external drive.
On my new MacBook Pro preconfigured with Mountain Lion, Mail, as soon as I launch it, tells me that it can not use the Mail folder located on my external volume because it has not Read&Write permissions.
OK but my Mail folder, inclusing all enclosed folders, have the right Read&Write permissions.
I have read here and there that there are many issues with Mail on Mountain Lion so I was also wondering if there are no solutions if I can install Lion on this brand new MacBook Pro or did Apple did again something stupid to prevent us to do so.
Any solution on my Mountain Lion problem would be appreciated.

  • Set mail folder on an external drive

Does anyone know if it's possible to keep the Mail folder on an external drive. I'm wondering 'cause I use POP mail with Eudora and I like to keep my mail on an external drive. That way when I move to different computers I just bring my external drive with me and all my e-mail comes too. I'd use IMAP but my host doesn't give me enough room to house all my e-mail. I like Eudora but am worried since they are no longer going to be supported and thought I'd give Mail a try. Has anyone heard of this working or if there are any tutorials out there on setting up Mail to read from an external drive? Thanks so much.

sorry, you are quite right! It IS possible by using symbolic links! I should have thought of that right away.
    here is what you do.
Quit Mail and move the folder homedirectory/Library/Mail to your external drive. After that's done move the original folder to some other location outside homedirectory/Library like the desktop or simply delete it.
open terminal and enter the following commands:
    *cd ~/Library*
    *ln -s /Volumes/"externaldrivename"/Mail Mail*
Substitute the name of your external in the above.
Also, the above command assumes that you moved the Mail folder to the top level of the external. if not, modify the path accordingly.
That's it! what this does is create a symbolic link to the Mail folder on your external inside the Lbrary folder. I tested it and it works quite well. just make sure that when you start Mail, the external drive is mounted.
To undo this, trash the symbolic link we created and move the mail folder back to ~/Library.
