Can I open an imovie project in Final cut pro?

I have an imovie project that I want to open in final cut pro. It doesnt seem to want to let me. Any clues?

Hi mattyme,
It sounds like this thread might be answered, but I thought I'd offer a successful test case as my two cents. I just opened an iMovie project that one of our clients dropped off in FCP 5.1.4.
As Da Nam mentioned, open FCP, choose File > Open, navigate to the iMovie Project file and open it. It should ask you to save the new FCP Project file, and perform the rest of the functions for you automatically. (as it just did for me; project, clips and all)
Hopefully this offers a little reassurance.
Regards,
-James-

    The manual tells ..
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.1/?lang=en#ver41812c7c
keep in mind: just the 'plain cuts', not the eye-candy iMovie offers, wil be transfered.
    unfortunately it says ...:
You initiate the process from within iMovie. The project file and the media used in the project are copied to your Final Cut Pro library.
For more information, see iMovie Help.
so, if your iM doesn't work anymore, you can not transfer.
plus, my personal opinion!, I would start from scratch in FCPx...

  • Importing imovie project into Final Cut Pro

Hello I need help getting my HD imovie project into final cut pro. I recored the project in 24p and it's already imported into imovie. What is the best way to get it into Final Cut Pro so that I can edit it further without sacrificing the quality.
Another problem is that I have heard that imovie compresses the video and totally ruins the quality. Is this true? And is this reversible in any way? I have already recorded over all the clips for this project on my camcorder. How screwed am I?
    -Michael

First thing to do is find your original clips that you captured in IMovie. I don't have much experience in IMovie, but see if you can select a clip and control click and choose reveal in finder. If that works, open one of these clips in quicktime player and hit command-i and let us know the format of the clip.
Kind of doubt you'll be able to actually import your project into fcp, but you should be able to recreate it in fcp without too much difficulty.
Let us know what camera you shot and captured from. That may be of some help.
Hopefully someone with more experience in IMovie will speak up, but hopefully this will get us started.

  • How do i import imovie project into final cut pro

I movie 08 is seriously lacking titles and transitions, so I want to spruce up my project in final cut pro, but I do not know how to get the project into final cut pro
    thanks for your help

    YES!
Apple seems to be talking down to users with much of the workflow and nomenclature in the iLife Apps - it's almost insulting.
But I'm as old as the hills too - grumping has become one of my favorite pass times.
    And while I'm at it:
I still can't figure out why there is a "GO" item in the menu of OSX. WTH is THAT ? And why can't users change it's contents? Very PC. It would be more tolerable if we could use it like the OLD Apple Menu back in OS9. The Dock is cute GUI eye candy but I'd like the option of "docking" items in a menu too.
I'll shut up now before I get in trouble...

  • Problems Opening iMovie Project in Final Cut Pro

We created a 12 minute Video in iMovie for a client last year (basically starting Video editing as an experiment). However because they now want a multilingual DVD version we've decided to take the plunge and invest in FC Studio, thinking it will be able to open the project and allow us to add the additional audio tracks.
However, on opening the iMovie project in FCP, a lot of the clips along the timeline are missing, and the few clips that have transferred successfully seem to have spread themselves over 5 or 6 hours with huge gaps between them.
Are we doing something wrong? Final Cut Express seems to have a seamless upgrade path, does Final Cut Pro not have this ?
We don't really want to remake the whole video in FCP if there is a way of just importing the iMovie project.
iMac 20" G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Using latest FCP and iMovie

    Thanks everyone for your help.
I've just finished the project. As Steve mentioned I didn't actually need to add the audio tracks in FCP, in fact after adding them to Sound Track Pro and adjusting the volume I then realised they needed to be exported from there and added as separate tracks to DVD Pro. (everything has a timeline)
I used FCP to superimpose a new sequence and a logo to the top corner, I'm getting more comfortable with the programs now.
I think I've got my head around what application does what now, and have established a better work flow.
Once again thanks for your help.
PS. I get the feeling FCP is a slightly older program than iMovie or any of the other applications. The lack of live scrolling and audio wave forms (in the timeline) gives me that impression. But the whole FC studio an amazing piece of software, don't think I'll ever look back.

  • Why can't I open an existing project in Final Cut Pro X?

I am new to FCP.  There is no "save project" option anywhere.  So I assumed it saves my project automatically, since it always reopens.  So I went and started another project, assuming the first one was saved.  Now I can't find the first project.  I spend over 100 hours on it, and now it's gone?   I'm a PC user not used to macs and never used FCP before.   But I turned out this amazing project for work, got me a promotion, and now I just need to tweak it, and the deadline is tomorrow, and I have to start over again?   HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you look IN the events? If not there and to be certain it exists, try Open Library to see if there is another Library. If you are using 10.1.1, in the finder, in Movies, rt. click on the fcpbundle Library Icon/show contenets/projects.  Do not change anything while in there. Perhaps you have more than one library? The projects are in the seperate libraries/events.
Yes it auto saves. You can make a project snap shot to freeze in time and save everything in the project up to that point.
    Hope This Helps

  • I can not open my iMovie project

I can not open my iMovie project. Everytime I click on it, the spinning wheel keeps spinning and spinning until I force quite the iMovie. Please help?

OK Let's take a step back.
If you imported video clips from a camcorder there would be an Events folder in the Movies/iMovie Events/ folder.
You have the option as you import from a camcorder to send your Event to an external drive instead. In this case, it would be in the iMovie Events folder at the top level of the external drive.
If your project has no video clips, but only photos, there may be no events folder, only links to iPhoto.
Similarly, if your camera imported your video clips to iPhoto, and you used the iPhoto event in iMovie, then your clips are in iPhoto, and there is no separate iMovie event.

  • Can I open an imovie project from an external hard drive on a different computer than my own? If so how?

Can I open an imovie project from an external hard drive on a different computer other than my own? If so how?

If you used the Finder to move the files, iMovie will have lost track of them. iMovie holds the locations of the Event files, and Project files contain references to those locations. If you move the files, iMovie has no way of knowing where they are.
If you can, first move all the files back to their original locations. Plug in the external drive. Open iMovie and move the files in iMovie's interface (help explains how, but basically, just drag and drop in the event pane).
Then you can connect the drive to the new computer, and iMovie will see them.

This method didn't work for me, I've created an alternate thread for mi case. I'd appreciate any other alternative.

you can't just move a project that way. It all needs to be contained properly. If you can find the original imovieHD project folder, you can start again.

You can't directly. You can either export a file, or you can save it as a template, effect, title, transition, or generator, that can be used in FCP.

  • Mavericks' iMovie won't export project to Final Cut Pro

Upon updating to Mavericks and its accompanying versions of iLife, I do not see where the option in iMovie to open a project in Final Cut Pro X is.
Likewise, attempting to import an iMovie project from Final Cut only creates a blank project with the iMovie project name and then crashes Final Cut Pro.
Is there any way to regain this feature?

If you are on iMovie 10.0.2, use FILE/SEND MOVIE TO FINAL CUT PRO. If you are not on 10.0.2, let us know what you are on.
This sends the iMovie to FCPX 10.1. If you are not on FCPX 10.1, it will not work.
I recently tried this with one of my iMovie 10 projects and it all worked perfectly. Nothing changed in Final Cut Pro X (unlike when using the previous method with iMovie '11). All clips, titles, transitions, audio tracks, edit points and so forth were intact. I was then able to add further embellishments in FCP X. It's a delight using FCP X, given its flexibility and greatly expanded feature set compared to iMovie 10.

I can't get my projects in Final Cut Pro X to work in 1080p. One turned out to be 1080p by "accident" but I did everything the same as the ones that did not. Same camera/settings (shot in 60i).  I didn't really care cause I had to get some stuff done, but now I know I "can" dp them in HD but can't figure why the one went up to YT in full HD (and made a copy in my movies folder.  That one project acted totally different than the other 5 but I didn't change anything.  Can't get it to work again. ***?  Any ideas?

No problem! If you're worried about more complicated edits (which in all honesty, should work no matter how many clips you select or how many effects are attached to them), you can always compound a clip first, and then copy it over after if you're afraid of lots of track clutter getting in the way. Not sure if they would break apart afterwards though if you wanted them to.

    Hello everyone
I've recently messed up my Mac OS X Lion by deleting Aperture, but I need to get my data out of the computer. I've tried to repair it using DU, but it said I needed to backup all my data and reinstall the OS. How do I backup my data to an external drive?

Hope you guys can help me!

You need to back up 2 folders, Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects which by default are located on your Movies Folder. You can always check by clicking on a clip inside Fianl Cut X and selecting Show in Finder in the contextual menu for the selected clip.
