Can I play games on my MacBook Pro by using an external graphics card and using windows via a software called "Parallels Desktop" or do I have to use Boot Camp (I have both installed)

Can I use Windows Parallel to play games? I mean will it not get enough power? Like I clearly remember that I read some where one my system that the Paralels is getting only 1 GB of my ram. I have the mid 2012 MacBook Pro, the $1500 one.

You shouldn't use Parallels to pay games. If you want to play games you need to install Windows via Bootcamp so that it has access to all the resources available.

  • Should I not play games on my Macbook Pro?

I heard that for laptops, gaming is not a good idea because of the questionable resiliency of the keyboards and trackpads.  Is this knowledge applicable to MacBook Pros as well?  I know Apple makes products that last, but when it comes to onboard keyboards and trackpads, I'm unsure of it.
So should I not play games on my MacBook Pro?  To avoid ruining the keyboard or trackpad?  Or is this something that I don't need to worry about?

    That's not true.
They have magic pixies inside that repel dust!
I doubt that, can you substanciate that claim?
I've never had a Mac "wear out". Not one in 27 years.
I'd like to see this 27 year Mac your still using, can you post a picture?
but my keyboards are shiny with wear and still work 100% flawlessly.
For a 27 year old keyboard they better be very shiny with wear!
If I had known they would have lasted that long maybe I would have treated them better.
So this 27 year old keyboard isn't working anymore, what happened you get mad and take a hammer to it?
"Tear" on the other hand is what happens when you dump a lot of money on a piece of junk PC. Lots of tears.
How would you know this if you used the same Mac for 27 years. LOL
Taking people's posts out of context is fun, thanks you two for teaching me this neat trick, I will abuse it well! LOL

  • How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver. I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. thanks

How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver? I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. There are 4 HDMI-in ports on the receiver - BD, DVD, DVR/BDR and audio. In my system preferences for sound, the receiver doesn't show up as an output option. Can anyone please advise. (ps, this is my first time posting a question, so I hope I can find your answers!) thanks, JP downunder

For sound, try the audio output port and connecting to the RCA  audio input ports on your Pioneer receiver.  Use something like this:

  • Can't play MIDI files on MacBook Pro 10.7.5

PLEASE help! I'm an old boomer and not too tech-savvy (know enough to get all messed up!).
I can't play MIDI files on MacBook Pro 10.7.5, and it's driving me CRAZY. I'm trying to play files from this website: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/ (just select a song under the "Titles" link), using Safari and/or Firefox browser -- to no good end!
What can I buy or add on that will enable the playing of MIDI files??
    Thank you!

I had heard that MIDI worked in Lion, but don't currently have it to test.
There's a somewhat involved way to get it working described here, or you may be able to download the files & play them locally.

  • Can we play bluray disc on macbook pro 2011?

i am keen to know that can we play bluray movies on macbook pro??

    No.
    Different format...  http://www.blu-ray.com/info/
"While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray."

  • Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)?

Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)? I need a laptop for college and the Engineering program suggests a dedicated video card with minimum 1GB of video memory.

I have a Intel HD 4000 in my Mac Mini (late 2012), and it's okay for what I need it.
    However:
    - there were a few issues with flickering on the video output to external monitors. These were solved through a firmware update that came with OSX 10.8.3 - for the majority of the users. There is apparently still a small group of users that still has issues. You can read long threads about this here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4472316?start=0&tstart=0
    and here
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4490924?start=0&tstart=0
So for most of us (me included) this issue is solved, but it seems that certain displays / monitors don't work well with the intel HD4000, don't know if there is a pattern or a list of monitor models...
    - there was an issue with the color calibration on the HDMI output. No matter how much you tried to calibrate, the results remained unsatisfying. All light colors were crushed to white, wrong contrast, ...
You can read about this here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1482487
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4480354?start=0&tstart=0
The same firmware update improved this a little, good enough for me, but I can imagine it's not good enough if you do graphic work and need reliable colors from your monitor. On HDMI output, the thunderbolt/MDP output is fine. So it's mainly a dual monitor setup issue.
If it's for graphic work, I'd go for a Mac Book Pro with dedicated GPU !

  • Playing games on a MacBook Pro: Safety?

I recently found old copies of my Half-Life 2, The Witcher, Call of Duty, and a bunch of other PC games. I was wondering if it is safe to play them on my MacBook Pro 15 (Winter 2011 Edition). I will be installing them on my BootCamp partition of Windows 7.
What I'm worried about is whether or not playing games on my Mac (or any laptop for that matter) will damage the motherboard in the long run. I once owned an old HP laptop that was completely decimated after forcing it to play games that were very demanding on system requirements.
I was naive back then, so this time I will be really careful when I play games on a laptop. How many hours do you recommend that I limit my gaming time in order to avoid damage?
    Thanks in advance!

it will be fine. the motherboard problem was probably not caused solely by gaming
i have basically had my macbook air at full strength, fans running for 12 hours a day for the last 18 months
    it's completely fine

What products at the apple store can i buy to upgrade my mpb 13 inch for gaming? Like video card etc.
    Thanks in advance!

ok ! so you need to disable that function from your settings. enter settings--> keyboard. in the middle of the screen you can see that setting

  • Can I play X plane on MacBook pro  13-inch: 2.5GHz?

Please answer me if I can play xplane on macbook pro, i would like to buy a laptop for a flight sim, can i download some good scenery ang good planes?

It won't plug both spots. To get 16 GB you will have to buy 2 sticks, one for each slot.
Apple only recommends and will suport 8 and recommends installing in pairs - so 2 slots of 4 GB each. You can always try the 2 slots of 8 and see if they will work. I would recommend ordering from crucial direct. They are one of the better memory companies around and have a website at crucial.com.
You shouldn't have any issues as the maximum non-Apple supported config is 16 GB.
    Good luck.

  • How can I play sound from my MacBook Pro through my iMac?

  • Can you play blu ray on MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro and I am wondering if I can play Blu ray movies on my MacBook?

    Of course you can...
I bought this off of amazon.com... Samsung SE-506BB. Took me a while to understand the difference between AB and BB, found that BB is the latest version with a few bugs resolved.
Get Macgo from http://www.macblurayplayer.com... Download the trail version... I have been playing Blurays using this...
    enjoy
    Thanks & Regards
    Techno.
Forgot to add... Unlike OWC, Samsung doesnt need an external power supply... Good for carrying around...

  • Can we play bluray disc in macbook pro

I am planning to buy a macbook pro. Can we play blue ray disc on the macbook. If no, is there any other mac model which plays bluray

    Dear Mr. Srinivasan
1st-this forum is for Mac Pro (the big desktop Machine, not portable)-a common mistake.
2nd-no. due to licencing/technical issues and stubbornness on Apple's part, that's the answer. You can try with VLC or 3rd party software, plus an external Blu-Ray drive, but out of the box, no.
    all the best to you
