Can I put these drives from my old PPC power Mac G5 in my brand new Mac Pro

My old Mac stopped working and it was time for a new one. I think the motherboard died. Can I put my old hard drives in the empty bays on the brand new Mac? I have
Seagate ES 2 750 GB Serial ATA
Hitachi HDS722525VLSA80 SATA 250 GB
Thanks in advance
Steve

Should not be a problem, but that doesn't mean that just having the PPC system doesn't / hasn't affected one or two users.
The safest way is to put it in a FW case of course, a way to mount it after boot up.
Run the Mac Pro as is for a day. Clone the system, may as well get started with backup and fall back if needed. Even run Apple Hardware Test. Get to know everything works, booting, monitor and everything, and that it sleeps/wakes and does all the normal things it should properly.
Guide to using migration assistant answers most.

Aha OK then, that should work fine.
The only snag might be, if your missing the original thermal sensor from the original 24" Hard Drive.
Then again, you should be able to use the one that came from the original 17" Hard Drive.

I want to install Photoshop/bridge on a new Mac.  Can I transfer these apps from my old mac? Or can I get an update installed on my new Mac?

Do not transfer.  Install using installation files.  If you need to you can download most older applications thru the following page...

  • Can I put hard drive from a 2011 model into a ~2008 model?

Me, I'm a Windows guy. I have two identical laptops, and two other computers for parts. When one dies, I just switch hard drives from on computer to the other and I'm up and running again (assuming the HD is not the problem)
My wife uses a Macbook Pro for work, and hers is in need of a good amount of work. Charge board, track pad, keyboard.. probably other stuff.
Hers was purchased new in 2011. For Christmas, she was gifted a used Macbook Pro, of identical size and case, same black keys. Estimated as a 2008 or 2009 model.
Can we simply pull the hard drive from her worn out machine and install it in the older unit and have all files, programs, OS, etc work on the new older unit like I do with my Windows machines?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Hi and welcome to Apple discussions!
Yes they both use the same type/size hard drive.

  • How can I use the speakers from my old iMac (with miniRCA? plug) on a new iMac

How can I use the speakers (M-Audio) from my old 24" iMac on a new 27" iMac?  There is no jack on the new iMac - is there an adapter that will use the mini-RCA (?) plug from my old speakers to connect them to a new iMac?  Thanks ...

    Thanks again!
Hmmm ... I wonder.  The input jack for external speakers quit working on my old iMac (it made lotsa static noise for a while when I moved the plug or computer, then quit working completely; I figure something inside the computer got loose or crapped out - and I'm too cheap/lazy to take it the 20 miles to the nearest shop that might fix it).  When I plug the speakers into the headphone jack on the old iMac, I get very low volume or just one channel.
I don't have the new iMac yet, but I was hoping to use these old speakers instead of buying new ones.  I will certainly try your solution - what do I have to lose?  If they don't work, then I get new ones - or try something else.
    Many thanks for your time!

    Manually migrating
If you prefer to move your files one by one between a Mac and a PC, consider the following options. Some are easier than others, and some require more computer experience, equipment, or resources.
Generally, you can migrate your files to the Mac by:
Copying the files from your PC onto external or removable storage media and then use that media in your Mac to transfer the files to your hard drive.
Sending files over the Internet. If you have an email account, just send the files to yourself from the PC and then pick the mail up on your Mac and save the attached files to your Mac hard drive. You may want to compress larger groups of files first.
Connecting the Mac and PC together through a network to use file sharing to move the files.
Tip: If you're moving files over manually, you'll save yourself some time down the road if you organize your files during the process from the get-go. For example:
Move your PC My Pictures photos to your Mac’s Home folder Pictures folder
Move your PC My Music song files to the Music folder on your Mac
Move your PC My Videos files to the Movies folder on your Mac
Move PC text and PDF files to your Mac Documents folder
Export PC contacts to vCards, and import them into your Mac Contacts
    Use external or removable media
If your Windows PC has a CD or DVD drive, or a USB port:
Copy the files from the PC to an external hard drive or storage device, then reconnect the drive to your Mac and transfer the files to your Mac hard drive.
Burn files to a CD or DVD on your PC, and then use the discs in your Mac to transfer the files to your Mac hard drive.
If you don't have many files, transfer them over email, create zip files for larger groups of files. Mail your files from the PC to yourself, and then pick them up using Mail on the Mac.
    Use a network connection
Connect your old PC to your Mac—either directly or over a network. Before you start moving files over, you should install any Mac software that is needed to open the files. Once you're done, use one of the following migration methods:
    Direct connect
To move files by connecting your Mac directly to your PC (if both have an Ethernet port):
Connect your Mac to your PC using a standard Ethernet cable.
Make sure that both computers are turned on.
In the Finder on your Mac, choose Connect to Server from the Go menu to open the window.
Type your PC's network address in the Server Address text box using one of these formats:
    smb://DNSname/ShareName
    smb://IPaddress/ShareName
    Click Connect.
Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your PC's workgroup name, user name, password, and the volume or folder you wish to access.
Your PC volume should appear in the Shared section of your Finder window on your Mac.
Open the volume and drag and drop files directly from it to anywhere on your Mac.
When finished, click the eject button to right of your PC volume to unmount it.
    Network connection
To move files by connecting your Mac to your PC on the same network:
Make sure that both computers are turned on and connected to the Internet.
In the Finder on your Mac, choose Connect to Server from the Go menu to open the window.
Type your PC's network address in the Server Address text box using this format: smb://ServerName/ShareName, or select the name of your PC in this window (if it appears).
    Click Connect.
Enter your PC's workgroup name, your user name, and your password when prompted, then select the volume or folder you wish to access.
Your PC volume should appear in the Shared section of your Finder window on your Mac.
Open the volume and drag and drop files directly from it to anywhere on your Mac.
When finished, click the eject button to right of your PC volume to unmount it.
    Alternative methods
Copy files to a shared file server.
Purchase PC Data Transfer service at your local Apple retail store.

  • How to transfer mail accounts from old Mac running Tiger to brand new Mac?

I just ordered a new mac. Should be here on Monday (can't wait). I want to set it up with my existing mail (all my inboxes, and old messages, etc.). What would you suggest I do?
I was thinking I could move over my mail folder (wherever that may be) to the new account on my new mac. Will that work? Do I need to create the account first, then copy it over? Of copy it and then bring up Mail for the first time? I have several email accounts (gmail, .mac, etc.). Is all that in one place on the old mac?
I would appreciate some help. I want to be ready when it gets here.
    Thanks!

I've read that you can copy the ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and then start up Mail. The only worry I have is that Mail on Snow Leopard will not understand the "Tiger" version of Mail files. Can anyone confirm if this will or will not work?
    Thanks.

  • How can I put these files from my dropbox into MS Word?

After using migration assistant, I had 2 user accounts set up by accident. I finally figured out how to move/share files from the cloned user account to my new account. Anyway, I moved all my music and pictures into itunes and iphoto, but now, how & where do I drag and drop my pdf, excel, & word files into Microsoft Office? I am a new apple user, converting from a PC. Here is a picture of the Drop Box. Thank you

Similar to a PC, you can open Word, Excel, etc., and use the File/Open command to navigate to any folder, including that drop box, to open files. Also similar to a PC, you can store Microsoft Office files in any folder inside your Documents folder, so you can simply drag your Office files out of the drop box and into whatever project folders you have created within your Documents folder, and then open them in Office from there.
You can also open any of these documents in Word or Excel by dragging them to the appropriate application icon if they are visible, or if you have added Word, Excel, etc. application icons to the Dock you can drag the documents there too. That last part is much like on a PC where you drag a document from any folder to an application icon in the Windows Taskbar.
As you can see there is actually very little difference in how this works between a PC and a Mac.

  • My computer crashed but I was able to rescue my files. How can I transfer my bookmarks from the old Firefox browser and install them in the new computer? I can't find the bookmark file in the old browser.

I'm transferring my files from a HP laptop to a Dell desktop because the HP crushed. I installed Firefox 8 in the Dell computer (I had the Firefox 5 -I believe- in the HP). I'm looking for the old bookmarks file in the old computer but I don't find them. Where are they? I'll appreciate your help because I had a pretty good collection of bookmarks. Sadly I didn't back up them on time.

That's great, matthungo, I'm glad it worked and you've got your Bookmarks back. Wishing you and yours a wonderful and blessed Holiday season as well!

  • Can I delete backup data from my old iPhone which I used to restore my new iphone 5?

My iphone 4S was stolen, and I had to get a new phone. I had all my data backed up on icloud and it was easy to set up my new iphone 5 and getting all my data back, however, I still have my old'd phone backup data on my icloud and it's been taking up space (about 4gb) of data. Can I delete this data? Will it delete my iphone5's data as well, as I used it to restore all settings?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can safely delete the old back up now.

  • How do I get my old recorded songs to work on a brand new macbook pro?!

My old mac was with snow leopard. Computer says I need to upgrade to the latest Garageband version, but it already is the latest version. I have no idea what to do? Hope someone knows.
    Thanks

We need more information to see what is going wrong:
Which version of GarageBand did you use on your Snowleopard System to create your GarageBand projects?
The GarageBand Version you are using now - what version is that? Did it come preinstalled with your Mac or did you migrate it from Snowleopard? When GarageBand is running, click "About GarageBand" in the "GarageBand" menu. The version should be 6.0.5. If you see a different version you probably have two versions of GarageBand installed and are running the older one.
What exactly is the error message and when do you see it? When you try to open GarageBand, or when you try to open and old  GarageBand Project?
    Regards
    Léonie
