Can I put two GT120's in a Mac Pro?

I just put a ATI 4870 in my Mac Pro and I took out the standard GT120. My father has a Mac Pro as well and I thought about putting the card to use by installing it in his Mac Pro.
Both our Mac Pros are the most recent version. Only difference is that his is 4 core and mine is 8.
So can I do this? Can I put two GT120's in his Mac Pro, and would it even make a difference for him. He mainly uses Aperture 2, and Office apps.

Two cards only allow more displays to be connected.
Rendering for all displays is still done with only the primary card.
The information is then passed along the PCIe bus to the additional cards.
What additional cards actually do is to increase bandwidth loading of the PCIe bus, which can result in a net decrease in performance.
Some applications are not multi card aware, and can result in negative performance.
One example is the case of two identical cards and FCP:
http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/non-linear-editing-mac/145449-dual-graphics-cards-ma c-pro-final-cut-pro.html
Note that the "solution", that is to use two different cards, is a result of the fact that rendering occurs on only one card.

  • Can I put all 4 disks in my Mac Pro in a single RAID 1 set?

Can I put all 4 disks in my Mac Pro in a single RAID 1 set? I have tried DU but it will not let me add the disk that holds the OS. Machine is brand new. I am looking for one big disk.
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    I am on OSX 10.5.4

Yes, but since it will wipe out everything on all four drives, you have to use Disk Utility on the install DVD. Be sure to have another drive for backup with another copy of OSX. You can't do firmware updates from OSX on a RAID set.

  • Can I put my iMac HD into my Mac Pro?

I recently purchased a new 1 TB drive for my Late 2006 iMac, installed lion and transferred all my data from an older computer.  I just recently was given a Mac Pro Early 2009 unit with only 640 GB in there.  I'd like to use my new 1TB as it is compatible with the Mac Pro, and I was wondering if I could remove the 1 TB drive from the iMac and merely install into the Mac Pro as the primary drive with the OS?  The goal being to not have to reinstall everything on a new drive in the Mac Pro, and then run a migration of over 400 GB.  Would this work, what are my risks?
If this would work, I'd just wipe the 640 GB and put in the second slot and use for additional storage or backup.

All SATA 3.5 in form-factor drives are compatible, and SATA 2.5 in drives can be used with an adapter for proper mounting.
The Mac Pro, with its multiple drive bays, can get a big performance boost by establishing a "Boot Drive". This is a drive with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files for paging/swap. User files are moved off to a data-only drive or drives, and only the Admin account used for actual administration (not daily use) is left on the boot drive for emergencies. You may want to think about transitioning to a Boot Drive setup in the future.

The OP didn't ask how.  They only asked if it was possible, which would consist of either a yes or no answer, which is exactly what Niel provided.

  • Can I put two iMac's back to back on the same desk.   I noticed the computers feeling hot.

Can I put two iMac computers back to back on the same desk - I share a table with my husband and our computers have to be placed back to back.   I noticed the tops of the computers feel hot!

There should definitely be a little space between them to allow for ventilation, but it's normal for the top area to get hot.

  • Can you have two apple ids on one mac?

Can you have two apple ids on one mac? We each have iPhones and want to utilize iCloud.  Is this possible?

No, in this case the 2 user accounts with its own Apple IDs would be completely seperated.
If you want to share this things like music and app purchases you will have to to something else.
    1. Create two user accounts on your Mac (user A and user B).
    2. Create two iCloud accounts just for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, etc. (one for user A and one for user B):
On your Mac (with Mac OS X Lion or Mountan Lion):
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > iCloud > Create an Apple ID (button in left corner)
On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch (iOS 5 or later):
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > iCloud > Get a free @me.com address and create a new Apple ID
    3. It is not recommended because you shouldn't share your Apple ID account information with other people but you could set up your old Apple ID as an account just for store purchases (Apps, Music, ...) so that everyone of you can manage the purchases in their own library (Access is limited to 10 devices). Therefore you have to setup this "old" ID in Settings of your iOS devices (Settings > iTunes & App Store) and in iTunes on your Mac.

can I have two contact lists on one mac book pro?  I need one to sync with my iphone, one to sync with my husband's iphone.

I agree with Chris CA that this is the way I would *expect* iTunes to behave.
When I look at iTunes from my account (my music is in ~/Music/iTunes/ and not available to my spouse's account), I can see in my music library all my rips and my purchases, just as I would expect. I can use Store>View My Account (<myAppleID>) and all is as expected. Home sharing is NOT on.
Doing the same from the other account is not much different, actually. Nothing in the library yet, of course. Store>View My Account (<herAppleID>) also works. I CAN authorize my computer to play her music. I CAN view her iTunes purchases. When I attempt to download the purchases to HER library, though, I get the following dialog box:
Now I interpret this to mean that this computer (mine) will not download from a different AppleID (also mine) for 90 days. Is that [interpretation] correct?

  • How can I hook up 3 screens to a Mac Pro 8 core 2010 model?

How can I hook up 3 screens to a Mac Pro 8 core. One is a 23' Apple Cinema Display, the second is a 20" Apple cinema display and the 3rd is a 32' Sony Bravia HDTV (connected to mini port with mini/HDMI connector) Do I need to buy another video card? I have heard  about 4 different scenarios about this, and they all sound a bit complicated. I thought that you could automatically connect 3 displays with the card that comes with the MacPro. It has a DVI port and 2 mini ports, so it appears that would be for 3 displays. But this is where it gets strange. Any thoughts?

Which video card?  5x70?  If you read about the various scenarios thern for 5x70's you need two active adapters for thee monitors (TV considered a monitor).  And you should have seen references to these apple docs:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
It's not really complicated.  Search out the appropriate adapters and hook 'em up.   For the 23" and 20", if they are DVI, you need single link adapters.  For the TV, if you end up using the DVI port for it (because possibly you can't find the appropate adapter cmbination) then you need to handle the audio separately since DVI doesn't carry audio.

  • Two hdmi displays to the Mac Pro  cylinder

How do i hook up two hdmi displays to the Mac Pro  cylinder?

There are cheaper adapters and cables
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA824ZM/A/belkin-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-adap ter>
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA825ZM/A/belkin-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-cabl e-2-m65-ft>
but they are passive not active.
The new Mac Pro can use a maximum of two passive adapters (the built-in HDMI port counts as one), so you could use one passive adapter, but any more would have to be active.
Some useers have reported problems with cheap Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables.

Don't know! You'll have to give us more details of what's happening when you try. Can you print other documents OK? When you try to print, does the printer icon appear in the dock - click on it and see if there are any printer messages.

How large can an internal hard drive be on a Mac Pro part #ZOD8 ?

Mac Pro tower can support drives up to 4TB is size.
If running 10.8.4, 10.8.5 or 10.9.0, there is a bug in Disk Utility that precludes proper erasing of drives over 2.2TB as Internal drives
