Can I replace my 250Gb SATA HD in my 2008 aluminum MacBook with a new SATA3 Solid State Drive?

I would like to replace my 250Gb SATA HD in my 2008 aluminum MacBook with a 500Gb SATA3 SSD. I want to do it because of the age and to increase capacity, access speed and reliability. Is SATA3 backwards compatible to SATA? Should I save some money and just stick to a regular SATA higher capacity HD and forget about a SSD?

I replaced the hard drive in my early 2009 model with a Samsung 840 ssd. My book has the same sata interface as yours and accepted the newer drive without a hitch. It's the best $160 I've ever spent on a computer upgrade. My macbook feels like a new machine. I would highly recommend it.

  • Can a A945US laptop with Vista have a solid state drive installed?

It doesn't appear many questions get answers around here... I can forsee driver problems...

    Hi:
Many times questions don't get answers because people just don't know. No one is deliberately ignoring you.
There are hundreds of HP notebooks out there, and unless someone has actually installed (or attempted to install) a SSD in that particular model, all we can do is speculate.
I will offer you my opinion. That is all I can do, since I do not own your model notebook and I have never installed a SSD in any notebook or desktop PC.
    Let's start with the manual...
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01295803.pdf
Chapter 3, page 21 lists the supported drives for your notebook series.  No SSD's are listed as optional drives.
Let's take a look at your PC's architecture...
Your notebook either has the GM965 or the GL960 chipset. I can't say for sure since I am not quite sure if the T2390 works with just the GM965 or the GL960 or both.
You can run the Intel chipset ID utility to find out what chipset you have.
    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-009266.htm
If you have the GM965 chipset, theoretically, it should.
You can see if your notebook is listed in this Crucial site as supported for an SSD
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/ssd.aspx
And according to the site, a SSD is supported.
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20a900%20Series&Cat=SSD
I just happened upon the Crucial UK site. I'm sure the crucial US site has the same search engine.
    Hope this helps,

  • Can I put a SATA 3 Solid State Drive in my Compaq Presario CQ57-447SI?

I would like to upgrade my Compaq Presario CQ57-447SI and replace the hard drive with a solid state drive.  I'm considering the OCZ-Vertex-4 2.5 inch SATA 3 Solid State Drive (128GB) but I'm not sure if this will be compatible with my notebook?

    Hi:
If a SATA II drive is a lot less, then probably yes.
    Notebook specs are very sketchy.
The chipset may be capable of SATA III transfer speeds, but HP may not have SATA III controllers on the motherboard.
    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/value-chipsets/mobile-chipset-hm65.html
As you can see from the specs at the link above, the chipset has 2 SATA III ports and 6 SATA II ports.
You would think that HP would hook up the primary SATA AHCI controller to one of the 2 SATA III ports, but that may not be the case.
That is the best I can do for you since I don't have your notebook and cannot confirm the speed the drive runs at.
So, if there is not much of a difference in price, I would take a gamble on the SATA III SSD.

  • Can Apple replace iMac 24" drive with a solid state drive?

Can Apple replace my early 2009 iMac 24" drive with a solid state drive?

An Apple Store will most likely refer you to a local Apple Authorized Service Provider for that type of work.
Go to > Support > Find an AASP > click the Service Box > enter your Zip code and call some of those AASP's to see which one's do that type of upgrade.

  • I have an internal 256 Solid State Drive on my MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade it to a larger solid state drive? If so, how?

I am trying to free up space on my solid state drive on my MacBook Pro, but am not having much luck. I have come to the point where I am asking myself, "is it possible to upgrade to a larger internal drive?" Please help. I appreciate the feedback.

Yes you can upgrade it. Unless your MBP is one of the new Retina display models. Is it one of the new models with the Retina display?
If not it is the same as changing a regular hard drive. you buy a new bigger SSD. Take the bottom off, aboput 8 screws. Take the part that holds the SSD drive inplace. Remove the cable connector. Remove the 4 mounting screws on the side of the original SSD and istall them on the new SSD Re-Connect the cable. Slide the drive into the drive area. Replace the hold down part. Then put the bottom back on.
Then connect the original SSD to the compuiter with a SATA to USB adapter. Boot the system and hold down the Option key. At the screen that come up select the USB attached SSD and boot the system from it. Open Disk utility and Partition the new drive as 1 partition, format it Mac Extended (Journaled) giving the partition the name of Macintosh HD (or any name you like). Once that is done exit out of disk utility and get a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper then install that. Run it and clone from the USB attached SSD to the SSD you just installed inside your system. Once that is done shut the system down, disconnect the USB attached SSD and then power on the system. It should now boot to the internal SSD you install. To nbe on the safe side go into System Preferences, Startup Disk and make sure the internal SSD is selected. You are done.

  • Can I install a solid state drive in my CQ62-215DX

I need to replace my hard drive in my laptop and I'm curious first on whether or not I can install a solid state drive in this laptop and if so, are there any recommendations?

    Hi,
Yes you can, SSD's are much cheaper now. You can buy from the following reliable vendor, it guaranties its products will work:
        http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/HP+-+Compaq-memory/Presario+CQ62+Series/Presario+CQ62-215DX-upgrades....
You can buy from 120Gb to 960Gb. I bought one Crucial 960Gb last week but from Amazon

Has anyone tried to put a solid state drive in a HP HDX16 and, if so, what problems, if any, did you encounter?  Thanks.

    Hi,
Like any laptop, you can replace existing HDD with a SSD. Please check the following guide:

  • Can I use a Solid state drive in my 21 inch iMac

Can I use a Solid state drive in my 21 inch iMac if so what manufaturer is recommended?

Yes. I have used and recommend OWC's Mercury models and OCZ's Vertex 3 models. They do work in Macs. Depending upon the model you have you should get either 3 Gb/s or 6 Gb/s drive. That will depend upon your computer's disk drive bus support - SATA II or SATA III, respectively.

  • 250gb solid state drive and 1TB on a second HD

I have an iMac with a 250GB solid state drive and 1TB on a second HD. I have externals drives for photos and videos, but everything on my computer is on my SSD and it is full. How and what should I transfer to the HD2? I have deleted several apps and other files from the SSD.
Can I move applications/programs to the HD2 or should they remain on the SSD?

If you are happy having your applications in your SSD and performance is good, there's no reason to move them to the HDD because you will lose performance, as read and write tasks time are higher in a HDD.
If your SSD is getting full, you can try to put data onto the HDD like movies, music or pictures. In most cases, you don't need an enormous performance for them unless they are for professional use, so they can be in the HDD without any problem. If you have them on an external drive, ignore this.
If you are decided to put applications in the HDD, note that not all applications are supported. Most drag-and-drop apps (the ones that are installed by dragging them into Applications folder) are supported, but not other ones that come with an installer, like AutoCAD or Microsoft Office

  • Sata 2 solid state drive

dv6 1030us - will this motherboard support a sata2 solid state drive as the primary drive?
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Yes, it will. You can use SATA III because all backward compatible. I believe dv6 3xxx machines use SATA II. You can check yourself using a program called PCWizard 2012.

  • Can i change the serial ATA Drive to solid state drive easily ?

I just Bought a MacBook Pro , With Hard Drive (500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rp) .
Is it easy to Change it later to to (Solid State Drive) ?

An SSD is simply going to provide much, much, much faster access than a standard hard disk drive. Your machine has a SATA II controller, meaning that it can have negotiated speeds of up to 6Gbps. You'll get very near that limit with a SSD but you won't be even close with a standard hard drive.
I've had a SSD in my late 2011 15" MBP since about a month after I bought it. I've also increased the RAM to 16GB. My machine flies - and so can yours.

No.  but you can sell it privately and use the proceeds towards a newer used model.

  • Can I migrate my data from a regular hard drive to a solid state drive using only a Time Machine backup from an external hard drive?

I just bought a Samsung 830 256GB solid state drive which I will use to replace my 15-inch, 2.53 GHz, Mid 2009 MacBook Pro's stock hard drive. I also keep an external hard drive in which I keep my regular Time Machine backups via FireWire. Would I be able to migrate all my data from it after putting in the solid state drive? I prefer not to use any third-party applications and I do not plan on replacing the SuperDrive with the hard drive that I'm going to remove from my laptop.

  • What is largest solid state drive I can install in MacBook Pro 8,2?  I want to perform a clean install of Mavricks and dump my old hard drive.

What is largest solid state drive I can install in MacBook Pro 8,2?  I want to perform a clean install of Mavricks and dump my old hard drive.

If the bank account permits, I suggest getting a 1 TB SSD anyway.  One cannot have too much storage.
Unless you are having issues with your current installation, a 'clean' install is not necessary.  It would be more efficient to clone your current drive to the new SSD, test it, and then do the swap.  The installation of Mavericks over Snow Leopard can be done either before or after the cloning process.
    Ciao.

how can I change my iphone username to update apps and download anything with the new email I have today?

Before you make an apple ID with the new email, go to appleid.apple.com.  login with your old email and password. change your old email to your new one. Now you can use your new email as your apple id, but beware if you go through the process of creating a new appleid with your new email address you will not be able to attach your old account to your new email.
