Try this (assuming you're using iPhoto 12): make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

A refund may not be possible since the terms of sale for the iTunes Store, as Joey said, state that all sales are final. You can contact the iTunes Store, explain the reason for your request, and ask, though:

It's possible they'll make an exception for you. An exception is more likely if the app is defective in some way or doesn't do what the developer advertised and the developer has been unable or unwilling to help you.

Is the app not working as described ? All purchases are considered final, so if the app is working as described then you are probably unlikely to get a refund.
If it isn't then have you tried deleting and redownloading it via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your phone, and if that hasn't fixed it then you've tried contacting the develeper ? To return an iOS product requires a valid receipt. You have 30 days to return an iPhone. The iPhone must have all original packaging & accessories and be in new condition. Apple may charge a restocking fee on a returned iPhone.
If the iPhone was bought from a 3rd party, their regulations for returns would apply.

I lost my iphone 1 month into my 2 year contract. I have my old phone that I've had for the past 3 years while I was waiting for the iphone to come to Verizon, but I'd really like to replace my iphone. Because Verizon requires a monthly data package on smart phones, your old number will be charged until you replace it while under contract.
When adding the new number to get another iphone, transferring old number to your new iphone, you may be able to then transfer the "new" number to a basic device, minimizing costs. We have two landlines in our house, but we only need one and we'd like to stop wasting money. The first line, which is only used for phone calls, has the number which all our personal and professional contacts know – so we really don’t want to get rid of that. The second line is only used for BT Broadband Option 3 – so we want to surrender that line altogether and move the broadband service over to our first line (which, according to the BT website, will also give us much better broadband speeds). Sounds simple …. but somehow I’m concerned that the broadband transfer/line cancellation process could get screwed up. Especially since we would also want to downgrade the broadband service to (today’s equivalent of) Option 2 and add BT Vision to the mix.
So I’d be grateful for any advice on how best to proceed. Since our BT Broadband contract expired long ago, could I just cancel that and – at the same time – take out a totally new broadband contract (at a better price, and/or a new hub, with luck) on the phone line which we want to keep? Or will BT not let me do that, since both phone lines are registered to the same address/account? Or, if I really want to avoid things going wrong, should I think about leaving BT altogether and taking a competitor’s broadband/tv combination product? I’ve actually had no major problems - over many years - with the BT broadband service, so I’m certainly prepared to stick with the devil I know if I can be (reasonably...) sure that things aren’t going to go wrong and that the cost savings are going to make it all worthwhile.

No such thing has occurred. iPhones do not backup to one another.
It is not possible to backup a different iPhone from the one being updated.
If the iPhone was restored with a backup from a different device, restore it again from the correct backup.
