Can I run Leopard OS X v10.5.8 on a Power Mac G5 (2004)?

I am wanting to upgrade to CS5 but I see more and more people are having problems with Snow Leopard not running on the Power Mac G5 because of it not having an Intel Processor. Mine does have the Dual 2 GHz Processor is it able to run the new CS5 on Leopard OS X v10.5.8? Please advise and thank you for your help.

Adobe CS5 requires an Intel Mac.
That Intel Mac can be running OSX 10.5.8 and still run CS5, but it has to be an Intel machine.
The good news is that even today's Mac Mini is likely a more powerful machine than the biggest G5 available (not just the faster CPU, but every single one of the sub-system components is significantly improved).  And the cost of a new machine isn't so bad, in the context of what Adobe charges for their apps.  Your best bet would be to start scouting around for a new machine that would be ready for CS5.5 when it starts shipping next month.

  • Can I run Leopard OS 10.5 on my PowerBook G4

I have an older PowerBook G4. Can I run Leopard OS 10.5 on this machine? Right now it is running 10.4.11. I purchased a new Verizon iPhone but that needs iTunes version 10.2.1 and that will not run on anything less than Leopard 10.5. I own a retail version of Leopard so that is not a problem. I just want to know if there's enough power to not have it bog down. It has 1.33GHz PowerPC G4 processor with 1.25 GB of RAM. Thanks.

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*.
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Can I run OS 10.6.x in Paralleles installed on a Mac running OS 10.7.2?

Can I run OS 10.6.x in Paralleles installed on a Mac running OS 10.7.2?
This question is related to my need to continuing using Quicken 2005, which is not supported by OS 10 7.2.  If I could load Mac OS 10.6.8 into Parallels and run Quicken 2006 in an emulated version of Mac OS, I could then run 10.7.2 and move onto iCloud.  I've looked at a couple of altehrnaftves to Quicken 2005 but none are as comprehensive as Quicken.

    Hi John,
That is an interesting question, to which I don't know the answer. You might try it on a separate drive or partition and see how it works. I run Snow and Lion but on separate partitions on my internal HDD. If you try it please let us know how it works.

  • I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

OK, it looks like all but the first G5 1.6 Ghz, & the last 3 G5 Dual Cores will take PC3200 RAM...

  • Can I run FCS (1), and Tiger latest upgrade on an Intel Mac?

Hope this isn't too whacky a question,

I plan on buying an Intel Mac, but am in the middle of
a fairly large FCS(1) project and don't want to upgrade to 2.whatever quite yet.
Can I run Tiger 10.4.11 on an Intel Mac?
    Also running QT 7.3.0
    (ducking)

Yes. TIger was the operating system in use when Intel Macs came out. Works fine.
Leopard? Well...that and FCP on any Mac is a crap shoot.

  • Leopard won't wake monitor from sleep on Power Mac G4

I had no problems with my Power Mac dual G4 867 while running Tiger, but immediately after a clean install of Leopard (a fresh install - no third party apps) my Dell 17 inch LCD monitor will not wake from sleep.
The monitor comes on just fine when the computer first boots, but if the computer sleeps, and I wake it by hitting a key on the keyboard, the drives spin up and I can hear that it thinks it's working just fine, but the monitor won't wake.
I know that the computer is working fine despite the sleeping monitor because I can hear VoiceOver working after a clean install of Leopard (if I let it sleep after the Welcome movie) while asking for user information.
I reinstalled Tiger, and the problem disappeared. The monitor wakes reliably from sleep with a fresh, clean install of Tiger. But with Leopard, even turning off and on or unplugging the monitor doesn't wake the screen.
I have reset the PRAM, the PMU, and the Open Firmware (the firmware is up to date). I even opened the case and pulled and re-seated the video card. Nothing seems to work, so I have just set the computer to never sleep. Not a great option, given the insane fan volume in the G4 MDD model.
Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer.
    KHult

I'm having similar problems with both a new MacBook Pro and a new Mac Mini, both connected via a Gefen DVI switch to a Dell 2005FPW monitor. Putting the MacBook Pro to sleep while in dual monitor mode will crash the machine. Putting the Mac Mini to sleep won't crash it, but the monitor won't wake—the computer wakes, but the monitor stays black. I can use Screen Sharing to connect to the Mac Mini and restart it (the only fix, as far as I can tell).
I suspect this is a software issue, because my old PPC Mac Mini would usually wake from sleep. The Gefen support people say this shouldn't be happening.
Anyone having this problem should probably post it as a bug at Apple's Feedback page. I think reinstalled, resetting PRAM etc. is probably a waste of time. Meanwhile, don't sleep your monitor.

  • TS1702 Hi, I bought The Truth About Love album on itunes as a complete my album from my Iphone4S.  I can see the name of the album as a purchase on my Mac Notebook 2004, however I am not unable to add the music to my itouch and is doesn't show up in music

    Hi,
I bought the Truth About Love/Pink's album on itunes as a complete my album purchase as I had bought a song from the album previously. I bought it via my Iphone 4S.  When I turn on itunes on my Mac Notebook 2004 (IOS X 10.4.11) I can see the album as a purchase but it is not listed in my library music nor can I add it to my Itouch 2nd generation.  Do you know why?  I can access the songs on my iphone but nowhere else.

They will only be on your computer's iTunes if you put them there. If you are in a country where you can re-download music then they should show under the Purchased Link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes. If they don't show there then you can connect your phone to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over.

  • Can you use the Sapphire PCIE Graphics Card on the Xeon Power Macs ?

    Hi,
does anyone know if you can use the Sapphire 11168-02-20R HD 5670 512MB GDDR5 PCIE Graphics Card on the xeon intel power macs  ?
I did see on on another discusion that the ATI Radeon cards were all good, but I wanted to check.
    Cheers K

If would have to be flashed to even have the possibility of working at all in a mac.
I suggest you start with the following MacRumors thread if you are considering such a thing:

  • Can I run Adobe CS, CS3, CS4, and CS5 software on Apple Mac upgrade forom Snow Leopard to Maveric OS X ?

I would like to know if I can run my older Abobe CS, CS3, 4, 5 on an upgrade from Mac OS X Snow Leopard  to OS X Mavericks ?

Might work; might not.  Legacy apps (CS2, 3, 4) that weren't built to run on modern operating systems may have trouble with Mavericks.   I think you'll be OK with CS5, 6 and CC.

  • Powermac G5 can't run leopard 10.5.x

I have a PM g5 dual 2.0. I am running 10.4.11 fine no problems. I have tried many times to install leopard 10.5 from 2 different black label family pack discs.
The install freezes at select destination disk. Both disks. Put g5 in target mode and installed 10.5. Booted in 10.5 and get freezes. Some quickley some after 2-15 minutes. I want to run imovie 09 which needs 10.5. I have done everything I know to solve the problem. If you have any advice it is appreciated. Thanks
Things I have done to solve the problem.
Unhooked everything but what came with the mac which is a june 2004 pm g5 2.0 dual
changed ram to different slots being careful to keep in pairs, removed all but apple ram, removed apple ram and installed crucial ram, reset pram, reset pmu, tried install on original harddrive. Erased and reformated orginal hard drive. Tried new reformatted hard drive. ran apple hardware test. all passed. tried to run the 10.5 hard drive externally via firewire
took to an apple authorized repair business (not apple store) They reinstalled 10.5 and updated to all but the newest update. They ran a more intensive
hardware testing. There results were all passed but 2 freezes in 60 hours of continous video loops, I’ve tried different hard drives new and old, used disk utility
to repair permissions and verify disk even took an ohm meter to see if the pram battery still has the proper voltage, it does
Why will 10.4.11 run with no problems ( safari, mail, keynote, imovie 08,photoshop elements 6, many other non apple apps)
And 10.5 freezes sometimes quickly sometimes after a few minutes. when the freeze happens i just get a mouse freeze and cant do anything. No fans come on.
Once I booted into 10.5 and made it to the activity monitor and saw that a root item called mdworker was using a lot of processer power. Maybe thats a clue.
Any help would be great. Thanks

It may be freezing because 10.5.x is more graphics intensive than earlier versions and the graphics card is overheating. Does your Mac's graphics card have a fan on it and if so is it spinning? Is the card clear and free of dust? Have the exhaust and intake vents been cleaned lately?
How are you formatting both the hard drive and partition(s)?
IIRC mdworker has to do with Spotlight.

Leopard is typically as fast as Tiger and in some areas a bit faster, so it's not likely you would notice a difference.

  • Can I run a 4-arch binary as 32bits on a 64bit Mac?

I created a 4-arch executable (ppc/intel & 32/64bits). On a 64bit Mac it runs as a 64bit program. On a 32bit Mac it runs as 32bits. I would like to force it to run as 32bits on a 64bit Mac, without stripping out the 64bit architectures. (some seldom-used plugins for the program can only be built 32bits on OSX)
64/32 bit OSX applications have a checkbox in Get info to open in 32bit mode, but CLI executables don't have this option.
    Can this be done?

If you using Leopard, look at the 'arch' command. It has been enhanced to allow you to change the search order for the universal programs. They also talk about using it to set up the specific type through an arch command. I could not find where they are keeping the search order yet and personally have not used 'arch' in this manner.
The man page for Tiger does not mention this functionality. So, I assume that it is not in Tiger. You might get further explanation from my message:

  • Can you run Lion os and Lion Server os on the same Mac mini?

I'm a windows convert to Mac and I'm interested in running a standard Lion Client, but at the same time running Lion Server on the same Mac Mini (Server Edition).  My needs for the Lion Server OS is to handle e-mail, a Web Site, and file sharing between the server to a secondary PC, iPad, and iPhone.  But at the same time I wish to dive into the Mac (Apple) experience.  I just wish to be able to do this on the same machine.
As a secondary question, is it possible to merge two different iTune Accounts into one?  Is it possible to share items purchased on one iTunes account with an iPad that is tied to a different iTunes Account?

    1. Yes, but you'll need separate partitions for each OS, or run the client OS in emulation.
    2. It isn't possible to combine the accounts, but a single iTunes library can contain content from multiple iTunes Store accounts.
