Can I run Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion on the same iMac?

I have a late 2009 iMac with a 1tb hard drive running Snow Leopard. Can I partion the hard drive and upgrade to Mountain Lion on one part and keep Snow Leopard on the other? If not, can I partition my external back-up drive that I use for Time Machine to do the same thing?

If one owns an early Intel Mac say 2009 and want to have OSX Lion and or Snow Leopard on a partitioned HD.My setup is typical I use my Bundled DVD and clean format HD ,intall Snow Leopard ,update all and then go to App store download Lion and then you chose your set up .

Today I was talking to Apple about an issue with accessing repair and disk permissions on an encrypted volume in Lion recovery Disk Utilities usually greyed out because one must turn off File Vault then go to Lion Recovery Disk Utilities by Start up ,press options the 2 partitioned volumes 1 Lion 2 Snow Leopard 3rd volume Lion recovery Disk Utilities.
,If File Vault is on it will not be there but when one selects volume 1 Lion and Command and R Lion recovery Disk Utilities appears but Lion Volumeo Recovery Disk Utilities will be greyed out you go tho unmount and it will prompt you for a Lion Password.
While doing this and repairing I encounted a Storage can not be repaired Error in red, Apple told me that Lion Recovery Disk Utilities related issues are not supported if one has Snow Leoopard and Lion on a partitoned HD.
So one must upgrade on top of SnowLeaopard or use the Snow Leopard Bundled DVD to erase the volume 2 SnowLeopard ,then all will be well !
So what happens with Mountain Lion when using Snow Leopard Macs ?

Install boot camp snow leopard and mountain lion

Is it possible to install boot camp on a 2009 Mac Pro to run both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion? The startup drive is already partitioned. I need to run two different versions of Final Cut Studio (and all the accompanying apps) and this seems the best way to keep them segregated. I know that I can run them both in Snow Leopard, but I have two different sets of Motion templates which need to be accessed.

Just to confirm assumptions before I do this, sorry, I'm an engineer.
1. The startup drive is partitioned already.
2. Partition (1) contains Snow Leopard and a user account.
3. Partition (2) currently contains a media library, does not have an OS on it, and has 232 GB free.
4. I will install Mountain Lion on partition 2 using the dmg downloaded from the app store.
5. That partition will then become the startup drive when using mountain lion.
6. Partition 2 will have its own user account, applications, etc.
Almost forgot. Do I need to erase and install on that partition or can I simply install? After this I owe you a beer.

Yes as I said before. If your model Mac came with Snow Leopard and you are now running Mt Lion and have Windows installed in a Boot Camp Partition all you have to do is make the Mt Lion partition smaller, take the free space and make it another Mac partition and you should be able to install Snow Leopard into that partition.
I have Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion installed on my MBP. No Windows in a Boot Camp partition because I run Windows XP in a Virtual Machine on both Lion and Mt Lion.

Please don't double post. Look at your other thread.
If you want to get rid of Windows and the BC partition use the Boot Camp assistant program to remove the Win/BC partition. Don't do it manually with Disk Utility Use the BC A program.

First, your Mac model must be able to run Leopard. Second, you would have to partition your hard drive to create a second volume then install Leopard on the new volume using a Leopard installer DVD.

Running Snow Leopard on Mountain Lion host VM (and being able to develop apps)

I am a MacBook Pro owner and a game developer who wants to port his previous games for iOS.
My Mac came with Mountain Lion. The game engine that we used can't be compiled with Mountain Lion (it uses Allegro 4 library, which uses libraries deprecated by newer Mac OSX versions). I don't think it will take a short time for our game engine to be compatible with Allegro 5, so working in Snow Lion seems to be our solution in this case.
I have read that you can't install Snow Leopard to new Mac, replacing the main OS. But I know that it's possible to install it in virtual machine, hosted by Mountain Lion. My questions are,
* Can it be upgraded to the latest Snow Leopard? I have read that some guy tried it with his pirate copy of SL and he bricked his virtual machine. I won't suffer the same fate because I will have purchased SL, right?
* Will I be able to use XCode 3.2.6 AND submit my iOS game from virtual machine?
It would be great if I could use Snow Leopard without buying a new (actually, old) Mac. I already feel like being punished just because we aren't at the year when Snow Leopard was the current OS.

I have a Mac Mini running Snow leapard. I believe i can update it to Mountain Lion but have read I have to first update it to Lion. This is where Im struggling. How do I get a copy of Lion as I cant download it as there is not an App Store on Snow Leapard.

XServe with Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion Clients

Okay, bare with me, as I'm fairly new to the whole Mac Server world. I have learned a whole lot over the last year and I've been able to completely manage our 60 Snow Leopard Clients on our XServe.
Last year, I came into an existing setup with ~60 clients running Snow Leopard and an XServe running on Snow Leopard. We utilize Server Admin and Workgroup Manager to manage our user accounts and our clients. We have over 300 users and utilize Portable Home Folders with our accounts.
Over the last year, I've learned a whole lot about managing the system that is already setup. I've made quite a few preferences and file structure changes utilizing Server Admin and Workgroup Manager. After getting new hard drives in three machines, I learned how to re-image them and get them set back up with our Workgroup Manager. I learn things pretty quickly and have a pretty high technology aptitude.
So, here is the predictament I'm in now...our county just purchased 31 new Macs to add to our network. These are running Mountain Lion.
I have a few questions, and I'm not exactly sure where this post should have been. I think the major questions/issues I face right now include:
Will I be able to manage the Mountain Lion clients utilizing our existing server and Workgroup Manager?
We need our server to work seemlessly with the 31 Mountain Lion clients and the 60 Snow Leopard Clients.
Once I get one machine setup correctly, I need to create an image of it so that I can then utilize this image on the other 30 machines.
How do I create an image and then deploy it?
Do I complete this step before or after I have setup the first client with Workgroup Manager?
Also, am I missing something? I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything important in regards to getting these new workstations setup on our network.

No, you don't need an new license.
But the Mac App Store doesn't allow you to download software, which you originally bought on DVD. Logic Studio is/was only available on DVDs, while Logic Pro, MainStage and Compressor are available in the Mac App Store as inidivdual applications.

How can I revert to Snow Leopard from Mountain Lion on a 2013 iMac?

I have a brand new 27" 2.9Ghz iMac, bought a few days ago, equipped with Mountain Lion. I'm using it for recording, and at the time, my recording software and hardware are incompatible. On Snow Leopard, however, it all runs flawlessly. I know I can't simply revert to Snow Leopard, as there is some sort of firmware that blocks these types of downgrades. Can I partition the internal hardrive and install Snow Leopard and boot from that partition? I have no real use for Mt. Lion for the time being, so I wouldn't need to boot them both simultaneously or even go back and forth. I just want Snow Leopard...any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

You have different problems with a Late 2012 iMac and Snow Leopard:
1. The firmware doesn't allow you to run it.
2. Snow Leopard isn't compatible because it hasn't got the drivers for the hardware of the iMac. Furthermore, you can only run OS X 10.8.1, 10.8.2 or 10.8.3 on a Late 2012 iMac at the moment, because older versions haven't got the drivers it needs.
3. It's illegal.
As you can see, you can't run Snow Leopard natively. If this is a requirement, I suggest you to return your iMac and search a Mid 2011 iMac with Snow Leopard (there are some Mid 2011 iMacs that came with Snow Leopard, although most of them came with OS X Lion). If you don't find anything, buy a Mid 2010 iMac.
Another possibility is to buy Snow Leopard Server and install it on a virtual machine, but I doubt it's legal

Am using Macbook pro mid 2010 running on OSX 10.9.5. It does not read my old Seagate back up plus ITB ext hard disk which opens and works on snow leopard. The back ups were made on snow leopard and mountain lion. How do I make it work on Mavericks?

I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

I want to make a new partition and be able to boot to either OS. Is this possible, if so, how? I would think just make a new partition and install the dmg file to that new partition.

@jimmyk11: AppleCare has actually informed me that "No - this MacBooPro9,1 cannot boot Snow Leopard".
It originally came with lion 10.7.4 installed. I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8 and (today, after a week or so of ML) I reverted to Lion 10.7.4. But now I find I can no longer boot into Lion 10.7.4 from my external FW800 drive (for troubleshooting and housekeeping). So it looks as if the "boot problems" are not confined to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Interestingly, I can use this same external drive to boot my iMac (10.7.4) and my older MBP8,3 (10.8) into 10.7.4 - but not the newer MBP9,1.
The MBP9,1 with Lion and Mountain Lion is turning into a disaster when it comes to external booting. If I could, I'd demand a return and a refund. After bottle-feeding Lion for a year, 10.7.4 seems basically stable and can still boot into Snow Leopard and Lion from my external drives if needed. But now I see I have a worse problem: Crippled Hardware. I suspect this bug needs a firmware update - if it is fixable at all.
