Can I share my iTunes library with other user accounts on my computer?

My kids have their own user accounts on my laptop. Can I share my iTunes music with them? If so, how? If not, can they import their own music from cd's without opening a store account? Anything else I need to know? I appreciate any help you can give!

  • Can I share my iPhoto library with other users accounts on my computer?

My wife and I both have our own user account on the computer. Right now all the photos are on my account. If we put the iPhoto library in users/shared will this allow us both to access the photos?
    Thanks.

Yes, this is exactly how I use iPhoto on my system.
You do need to update the permissions on the iPhoto directory after it's moved to the Shared folder. the default permissions will only permit your account to fully access the files, your wife's account will get errors or not see thumbnails correctly when accessing the pictures from iPhoto in her account.
After moving the iPhoto Library into Shared (and with iPhoto closed), Get Info on the iPhoto Library folder and change the Others access to Read+Write. Let it apply to all enclosed folders, also. Then hold down the Option key while starting iPhoto and choose the Shared version of the folder as your Library. Repeat the iPhoto launch w/option key on the other account as well and each user will access the same set of pictures, albums, keywords, etc. Just make sure you don't open iPhoto from both accounts at the same time. Close iPhoto before walking away from the computer or letting the other person logon.

  • How do I share my iTunes library with other users on my iMac computer?

  • Hello there - how can I share my iTunes library between two users on the same computer? I put the library in a shared folder between both and have selected this library on both as well, but when I update iTunes with music etc it only appears on one?

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • How do i share my itunes library with other users on the same mac

I'm trying to share my itunes library with other users on the same mac.  I have tried moving my library to a public folder but when the other user logs in they can't see it in the public folder?

Presuming you moved the entire iTunes folder to the shared folder the other users need to start their iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and select the iTunes Library.itl file in the shared folder.  Only once should be necessary.  Note that any changes anybody makes will be seen by everybody, so you have to trust each other a lot.
If all you moved are media files each user will have to add those files to their iTunes library.

  • Does home sharing allow me to share my iTunes library with other users on the same imac

Does home sharing allow me to share my iTunes library with other users on the same imac?

Apparently so (as long as each user operates out of a different Mac User account).
After setting up home sharing in the various different user accounts on the Mac, you need to have iTunes open in the account that you want to Home Share from.
Now use fast User Switching to get into the account that you want to Home Share to. Launch iTunes in there. The library in the other account should appear as shared for you.

  • Question re. sharing iTunes library with other user accounts

    I have seen this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
I want to share one library with four users on my account.  I'd like for any music purchased or ripped to this computer to end up in User 1's iTunes library, and for Users 2, 3 and 4 to have access to User 1s library just as User 1 does.
When I follow the directions for "Listening to another account's music files" in the above referenced document, it tells me to navigate to User 1's library through the dialog box that pops up after User 2 clicks "Add to LIbrary".
The problem is, when User 2 is doing that, and User 1 has put the iTunes library in ~user1/public, as the directions suggest, that dialog box won't allow user 2 to access User 1's Public folder.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance...
    Chris

Another long description in store here...
iTunes has two main elements. One is the library.itl database file.  When you open iTunes it is this that you see. It contains what music is in a library, playlists, date added, playcount, etc.  It is this that is really the library.  The other element are the media files. When you tell iTunes to play a track it checks in its library file which music file is associated with that track and goes and plays it.
Now you say, "for Users 2, 3 and 4 to have access to User 1s library just as User 1 does."  Do you really want User 4 to be able to go and delete or rename tracks, or change the playlists? This can be done if you really want it.  Or do you want each person to keep their own library [file] and share media?  Even that has disadvantages as a person might still be able to rename a file or even delete it for all.  At least everybody would have their own playlists, ratings, etc, though a person could delete a file and then it would appear as a broken link for others.  To be honest, iTunes isn't great for sharing.

Exactly what you want to do will involve different setups so before going into detailed insructions it would help to know which ones to provide.  Here's an sampling:

iTunes Home Sharing now works between users on same computer - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3865597  The problem with HS is I think you then end up with multiple copies of files, one for each user.  At least they cannot damage another's collection though.

  • Can I share my address book with other user profiles on my computer?

My wife and I both logon to our iMac with different user accounts. However, we know all the same people and would like to share the contents of the Address Book. How do we go about this so that if I add a person to the address book, that my wife will see it when she gets on with her account?
    Thanks.

I realize yours was a suggestion to investigate & not a recommendation, but I wanted to point out some of the method's potential problems in case it was taken as the latter.
Should anyone decide to take the safer option of sharing vCards manually, they can make the procedure easier by creating a shared folder in Users/Shared & an alias of it in some convenient location like the desktop. Then, after creating new contacts they want to share, they need only drag them from the name list into the alias. The other account holder(s) then can drag them from that common folder into their own Address Book.
A variation of this idea is to create individual folders in each ~/Public/ folder (changing permissions as appropriate), or to use the Drop Box folder to make the vCard available to other user(s). This would reduce the confusion between "incoming" & "outgoing" vCards. I haven't tried it, but it might also be possible to automate the importing or at least notification for the receiving user with folder action scripts.

  • How do I share my iTunes Library with other "users" on my iMac?

I have a new iMac that I restored my iTunes Library onto however, the library only appears in the account of the user that performed the restore. How can I share this library with all the users on this new iMac?

I followed the instructions to the detail, I've also used other sites and they all result in the same message when I try to select my library by holding down option and opening itunes: "The iTunes library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have written permission for this file."
I do have it located on a second internal hard drive on my mac that is completely empty. And under permissions it says everyone can "read and write". Is there something i"m missing or is it not possible to have it located on an internal drive?

  • How do I share my iTunes library with another user on the same computer?

I trired to follow the instructions provided by I-Tunes which was to move the ITunes media library to the shared section, however, the computer will not allow me to do this.  When I drag the file to the shared section, it will only allow me to drop it into the Airport.  I tried hovering it over the "shared" title but it's not working.
    Is there another solution?

    Hello Kathy,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when trying to move your iTunes Library.
It sounds like you may be trying to move it to the "Shared" titled on the Finder Sidebar.  When you see "Shared" in the Finder Sidebar, this is just a title and not an actual folder.
I recommend moving your iTunes Library to either the "Public" folder in your user accoung to the "Shared" folder listed in the Users folder.  You can access the Shared folder by clicking Go at the top of the screen with Finder open, and selecting Computer>Macintosh HD>Users>Shared:
Drag the iTunes Media folder to a public location. For example, you could move it to the Public folder in your Home folder (~/Public) or to a location outside your Home folder that other users can access (/Users/Shared).
Important: Don't move the iTunes folder, the iTunes library file, or the iTunes library.xml file.

  • How do I share one Iphoto library with other User accounts on the same iMac

I have created a shared Iphoto Library. When I add this to one of the user accounts, it copies all the pictures instead of sharing the same library. The result is that it uses memory.
Is it possible to create a shared library that is shared by all the users without actually copy all the pictures to each users Iphoto library?

    Hi MikaelK,
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • HT1198 Can I share my iPhoto library with other logons on the same computer

My iMac has three separate logons for members of my family. However, it would be very useful if we call all access the same iPhoto library. Is this possible?

To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using Shared Photo Streams in iCloud, if the privacy implications don't bother you.
There are more drawbacks to Shared Streams, than the privacy problem,Linc. Shared streams, imho, are perfect for showing off a small selection of photos, but nearly all work invested into the iPhoto library will be lost this way. Titles, caption, ratings do not transfer, and once added to the stream, you cannot rearrange the sequence of photos. Edits are no longer reversible.  If several family members are sharing photos this way on the same computer, they will all have to create their own photo libraries, create redundant photos, and have to recreate all the metadata. It is wasteful, if they really want to share a common iPhoto library.
The only practical way to do what you want is to let the two family members who need write access log in to the same account to make changes.
I am curious, Linc. Do you see problems with Apple's own recommendation, that LarryHN linked to -  - iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users  ?

  • Sharing itunes library with all users on the same computer

I am trying to share the itunes library with 4 users on the same computer. Please tell me how.

I've been trying to find a way to do this easily as well. It would be good if you could set iTunes to use the "All User" documents folder instead of the My Documents folder for the storing the main library and just use the My Documents Folder for individual playlists.
Follow the instructions in the link provided by Mimico Kid.
** It is not important that the shared folder is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music. It can be any shared folder on the PC. On mine it's H:\iTunes as I don't have the space on the C: drive.
When you've done that make sure that your Adminstrator account's copy of iTunes shows the Library, Playlists and Album art as you want the all the users to see them.
Then copy all of the remaining files from the Administrator Accounts iTunes folder into every other users iTunes folder.
    ** C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Documents\My Music\iTunes
If any user adds songs or modifies playlists the administrator will need to log on and copy the files from that users iTunes folder to everyone elses.
This might be a slightly cumbersome way around the problem but it works for me. It has the disadvantage or advantage whichever way you look at it that every User will see an identical view with identical playlists.
