Can I sort by relevence in finder?

Finder in Snow Leopard had two sorts at the top with the labels "Content" and "File Name."  I liked to use file name a lot because it would return results by relevence.
I have not figured out if or how to do so in Lion OS.  I can search by "name" but only arrange by alpha.  Please tell me they didn't delete this feature and I just haven't figured it out.
Thanks,
rk

Smart previews have nothing whatsoever to do with searching, and you can't sort by keywords in either LR or Bridge. I really think the best advice for you is to install LR and try its searching capability. With LR you are always doing searches by telling it to do a database query, which is quick, while with Bridge it's having to interrogate all the files in all the folders. Searches are always much faster with Lightroom, and the more photos you have the bigger the advantage of using Lightroom.

  • Can I reverse the order of finder lists or icons?

    Hello,
I am finding some problems with Lion that I never seemed to have with Snow Leopard and would very much appreciate someone's help.
To cut a long story short I want to reverse the order of the files in finder, either in list or icon view (or maybe any kind of view). At the moment they are in date created order, but I have also tried in name order and cannot see any way to reverse the order.
At present the are show the newest file first but I want to see them in oldest first as they always were for me in OSX 10.6
Also... in date created view they appear in groups (eg previous 7 days, previous 30 days) I have never seen this before and find it particulalry annoying. I'm sure some people love it but for me it is one of the things that I most hated about windows, but at least in Windows I found it easy to turn off (along with reversing order!). Can anyone tell me how to stop OSX from doing this?
    Much obliged,
    Pablo

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're users here and don't speak for "Apple, Inc."
In Finder icon view, click the Arrange button and select which column you'd like to sort by.
In Finder list view, click the top header of any column to sort by that column. Clicking the same header again reverses the sort order (and the small 'arrow' at the end of the column name reverses direction too).
And using Finder, View, Customize Toolbar the Finder window toolbar can be customized to display icons only, text only or both, as well as adding additional icons to the default toolbar:

  • Photos for iOS: How can i sort all of my albums automatically in alphabetical order

    Hey there,
first off, why isn't there a a community for the new Photos app?
    Anyway, here is my problem:
How can i sort my albums on the new Photos app on iOS?
I think it's not possible at the moment.
I am using the iCloud Photo library and uploadet all of my 15.000 photos from the last 15 years.
And because of that, i now have many many albums on Photos now.
Overall i love the new app and i love the iCloud Photo library, but i cannot sort my albums on the iOS app automatically in alphabetical order.
I can sort albums manual, but who wants that, when you have so many of them???
I have Photos on my Mac too and there i am able to do sort them in alphabetical order. But it is not adopted to iOS or the iCloud Web-App.
Because of that, i have a complete picture chaos on my iPhone and when i am looking for this one pic in that one album it takes me forever to find it.
So please Apple, fix this and we all can live happily ever after!
    Thank you!

Moments in Photo are the new Events.  T
here's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When the library was first migrated there was a folder created titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events are represented by an album in the folder. To open the sidebar if it's not open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window showing all of the albums.
The downside to this simulation is that the Album/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title while viewed in the Folder in the main window or in the sidebar. But they can be sorted manually.
Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

  • How can I sort my photos by size?  I need to get rid of those which are too small to print.

Is there a way to sort individual photos in iphoto by size.  (I know you can sort photos in finder- picture by size, but mine are in iphoto). I am organizing my thousands of photos into files within iphoto in order to print hundreds.  I am finding that many are too small to ever print (20-30kb) , and would like to delete those en masse rather than waste time sorting them, but cannot find a way to do that.  Does anyone know if there is a way?  It would be a terribly useful function.  Also, sorting by size would enable you to resize photos that take massage amounts of room unneccesarily.  Thanks for any info.

No there is no way to do this.
Also, sorting by size would enable you to resize photos that take massage amounts of room unneccesarily.
No it wouldn't. There's no way to change the filesize in iPhoto, it always preserves the original file.

How can I sort the words in a document into an alphabetical list? Thanks!

Copy the words to the Mac's clipboard (Edit menu> Copy)
    Paste into TextEdit
Next open the Edit > Find > Find window in Text Edit.
Highlight a space between two words and Edit menu > copy, paste into the Find field
Next create a return in the middle of your text and copy that and paste into the Replace field
    Click Replace All.
Now Edit > Select All and Edit > Copy
Open a Spreadsheet program with Sort ability and paste into the second column cell from the top
place a "a" into the top column cell, select the entire colum
    Sort desending order
Now if you need it out of spreadsheet format, then your going to need to copy just the data cells (not the entire column to avoid problems) and Paste "Special" as unformatted text into a word processing program
If you need to get rid of the Returns, do the opposite you did in Text Edit, replace the Returns with Spaces
A chore, but it's rare one needs to sort words into alaphabetical order.
FYI, I used TextEdit and the free LibreOffice (Spreadsheet and Word Processing) for the above effects.

  • Can I sort Reminders by due date in IOS 8?

Can I sort Reminders by due date in IOS 8?

So true! I have to agree: "It appears Reminders in 10.8 did not get a whole lot of thought put into it regarding how folks actually use reminders."
With Mountain Lion, Reminders no longer resembles a task-management (to-do) app in any way. I used to be able to limp along using it for my to-dos (although it never did accommodate this need well). This upgrade has made Reminders completely unusable for task management.
Once I got over my disappointment, I did some research and decided to try "Things." This application has all the functionality I've been wanting all along. It has a Mac version, an iPhone version, and an iPad version (among others)--and it keeps all devices synched via the Cloud (just not the iCloud ... but who needs the i ?). I wish I'd discovered it years ago. I'm glad now that Mountain Lion put Reminders over the edge; otherwise, I would not have made this discovery.
"Things" (oddly named though it is) comes close to the old Franklin planner software I used to love and haven't been able to find a substitute for. It can import items from Reminders, and it works with Siri. It's a joy to use, and it does everything I want it to do plus some things I never thought of and will use all the time. I downloaded the free trial version last night and within an hour paid for it with gratitude.

  • Can I sort books by Author in iBooks?

Can I sort books by Author in iBooks?

For sure. That is a life saver for me till I get a Sort by Author option on the Right Most menu. Currently when I need to find a book by its author I click the middle selection which does not sort books by the Author but gives me the option to see all the books by each author in my Library. Thing is I can not organize me Book Rack sorted by the author. I can organize it by the Title. Or I can organize it Manually, now that is a huge job. Not worth the time it will consume.
    Many thanks for your attention.
Hoping Apple will give us "Sort by Author" option in the right-most button and the Sort option in the View menu; along with the existing Purchases, Title and Manual options.

  • Can I sort on metadata?

I just posted a message asking about filtering on metadata, but I didn't want to confuse that thread with this second question:
Can I sort on metadata? For example, can I sort on "Date Time Original"?
I know I can sort on "Date Created," but that's not the same thing as the metadata's "Date Time Original" field. E.g., I have jpg files where the "Date Time Original" is in 1990 but the Date Created is in 2012. Sorting on Date Created doesn't order the files chronologically based on when the photo was taken.
    Thanks.

I have jpg files where the "Date Time Original" is in 1990 but the Date Created is in 2012. Sorting on Date Created doesn't order the files chronologically based on when the photo was taken.
To me it seems Date Time Original in Exif data from camera equals the Date Created from IPTC. This makes also some sense because exif is created using the Camera software and when you have set the date and time correctly this reflects the moment the file was created.
When using images that don't have its origin in a camera able to provide exif (analog camera or scanner etc.) you have to provide this data yourself and fill in the right places. I don't know if you were able to add this in the filed Date Time Created in an earlier version of PS file info using CS6 I can't find an editable field in the file info that is called 'Data Time Original', only date created is available.
Hence Bridge (although the options for filter and sort could be somewhat expanded) will not likely provide this option in future versions but you can always put a Feature Request for this, but if only 1 or a few people have the need for this it is not very likely to get realized I'm afraid.
So your only chance might be a script that reads your metadata and for example replaces the 'date created' data with the 'Date Time Original' data if this is in the metadata written.
You could try the dedicated Adobe Bridge Scripting Forum for this, their are some very helpful people in there:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/bridge/bridge_scripting
And make sure backing up the files before trying to alter them, if it screws things up you always have the originals to refer to.
Also a small tip that won't help you now but can do in the future. Think of a proper naming convention of your files and stick to it. Personal I rename all my files with first "YYYYMMDD" and then a short subject description followed by a sequence number for series of that same subject.
This will place your files always in a natural sort order for date. And when scanning pre digital files create a template for the metadata in Bridge with your common copyright info and use the IPTC core fields to immediately fill in the important fields like description, keywords, place and date created. You can select multiple files and use this template to ad the info in one go.

  • Can you sort ibookshelf books by collections and list all of the books in each collection?

can you sort ibookshelf books by collections and list all of the books in each collection?

The collection changes a little by the criteria you use to view the books, and you can view them by Title, Author, and Category. So, yes, you can.
The default view is Book view. On the upper right part of the page, you'll see four white blocks - that's the icon for book view. The icon on the right has three white lines; that's where you find Title, Author, and Category view. You can't create folders in any view.

  • HT1338 How can I sort folders in descending sequence

How can I sort folders in descending sequence?

There are two display options in the Finder, Arrangement and Sort. They are both under the same menu item/toolbar button. A regular click brings up the Arrangement menu. Holding down the option (alt) key brings up the Sort menu.
Except for Arrange by Name, all of the Arrangements are groupings. It groups the items by whatever criteria you chose. Within the groups, you can sort the items by other criteria.
If you arrange by Name, you can't sort by anything else.
Also, with an Arrangement set, you cannot adjust the sort direction.
To control the sort direction, set Arrangement to None, and sort by Name. Open the List view of that folder and click on the sort triangle in the column header.

  • Aperture 2.1 can´t sort webgaleries on .mac

i published many webalbums on .mac. from differnt macs. everything works perfect, but i have only 1 problem: i can´t sort the gallery´s. on iphoto i can sort i by drag and drop. this doesn´t work on aperture. any ideas? thanks from germany

I'm having the same trouble after updating to 2.1. Aperture says my referenced images are offline, and will only show me previews & thumbnails. I know my drive is online because it's the same drive I keep the Aperture Library file with all the previews and I can access the drive in Finder. If I move an image to a different drive and then import to the supposed offline drive and select "Show in Finder" I don't have any problems. Then if I select an image from before 2.1, Aperture tells me the drive is offline even though the photo is sitting right next to the other one it just said was online. Going to Manage referenced files, shows the same drive twice, 1 online with the new imported image and 1 offline with my main reference library.
Have deleted preferences, didn't fix it.
Have tried to re-import all the images without duplication, didn't fix it.
Have tried restarting system, didn't fix it
Have tried importing the images again to a different location, Aperture hung. Like always has when I try to do a big import.
Downloaded Lightroom demo, imported my whole library in one go without a problem. Have been playing around with it for about 6 hours no problems. How can Adobe make an app that is more stable on the Mac than Apple. If Aperture doesn't become stable in the next 30 days, I will reluctantly have to make the switch to Lightroom. Aperture is great but currently not usable for commercial purposes.

  • Sorting pdf files in FINDER according to date or name

Hi. I don't know much about apple computers I am contemplating buying a macbook, which I will use to store and view about 15,000 pdf files/articles (total memory ~ 15 gigs).
On windows explorer it is easy to sort by the date the file was created or by the name. Is this easy with Finder?
    Thanks.

    Very easy, especially by name.
You can do it in all different Finder views, adjust icons and texts sizes as you wish, choose a faster option with or without "preview" etc, very easy to set.
    As for sorting by date:
    As easy as by name,
except when file was not created by yourself: then it's often you'll have to use the sorting as the file was originally created.
    Also:
Still as easily as the rest, there are also some other kinds of Finder sorting: by kind, by size, by label...
Welcome to the world of Macs!
