Can I switch to an external monitor on boot without OS?

I have a cracked screen and I freshly formatted the hard drive on Windows (So basically, my MAC has no OS but I have an installer). Will I be able to switch to an external monitor on boot so I could see the OS installation well? if so, how do I switch?

Not in a position to test this exactly right now so I am just speculating.
IF this is possible, it should just be a matter of connecting your external display prior to booting, then booting the computer up (I suppose into the recovery partition, or an install disk). Since the computer recognizes the built in display and doesn't know its cracked, it will still display on there (unless you go into clamshell mode by closing the computer after it loads up the external display). I don't know if it will default to mirroring or extending.
Again, that is if it will work. Without an OS installed, I am not sure how it will behave.

How can I set up an external monitor to extend my screen in windows 7 bootcamp?  I have updated bootcamp to the latest version.  The monitor I have works while I am using Mac OS X. While in bootcamp the monitor is dectected and I am able to select the settings and displays however the external monitor remains alseep.  I hooked it up using a mini display port to VGA adapter.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks

On your Windows desktop right click and select Screen resolution from the menu. You should see a window like this:
Make sure you select Extend and then set your resolutions for each monitor.
If this does not work for you try asking on a Windows forum about extending displays to a second monitor.

  • Can't sign in on external monitor with MBP after Yosemite upgrade

After Yosemite upgrade, when I turn on my MBP, I can't sign in using external monitor with MBP, always could before Yosemite.  Blurred image of my wallpaper shows on monitor, can move arrow on external screen but sign-in only shows up on my computer screen, with no arrow.  Since there is no arrow on the computer screen, and no sign in box on the external monitor, I have to unplug the external video to sign in on the computer, then plug in the monitor again.  Any ideas?

    NOWEK,
Thanks for this suggestion, but so far no joy. I have zapped the PRAM, jammed the Frabitz and smashed the Gafrogsnicker, all to no avail. When the MBP restarts I get a blurred image (extreme "vibrancy") on the external monitor, but no images of the login accounts to choose from or the other options. However, on the MBP screen I get all that. The keyboard and mouse respond, but just doesn't display on the external monitor. This is of interest to me because I have the MBP down in a credenza with other related gear and the external monitor and keyboard up on my desk. It's true I don't have to do this often, but still, it just started this aggravation with Yosemite. Thanks for trying to help.

  • External monitor in boot sequence

    Hi all,
i have a hp dv6000 laptop with a busted monitor.. so far, i had managed to get by using an external monitor. but the problem is, the external monitor only works when windows loads up..
how do i 'force' the laptop to detect the external monitor during boot sequence, especially now when im trying to reformat the laptop.
i know you have to press f11 during start up but if i cant see anything. the external monitor will only start detecting during windows login screen.
    help..

I have a HP Mini 1000 and I am having the exact same problem.  I think I need to change a BIOS setting, but I can't see anything since the LCD was broken, and I completely removed it.  I can see when Windows starts, but I need to see the boot so I can install a new operating system.  Does anybody know the BIOS sequence key by key so that I can do this blindly?  I can get in with F10 as Windows does not start when I am in the this mode, so I am definitely in the BIOS.

  • Can I run two big external monitors on my 2012 MacBook Pro?

I understand that my NON-retina 2012 MBP can be set up to drive two Apple Thunderbolt Displays, but am I out of luck on driving two generic 27" DVI or HDMI external monitors?
Boring details: I've just bought a mid-2012 MBP, with a quad-core i7 and 16 Gb of RAM plus the high-end GPU w/ 1GB of video RAM, but non-retina. I'd like to run two external 1080p or DVI HD-equivalent monitors (I have several new Samsung 27-inchers). I can live without the laptop 15-inch screen while I'm doing it!
I know that the retina MBP has two Thunderbolt ports, plus a DVI port, which would have easily given me what I need. However, I didn't get the retina MBP because it's totally non-upgradable by a user. There were a couple of other potential additional issues, including some reported problems installing Windows into Parallels via external DVD player. There's also the $mid-3000's price for retina, tricked out the way I'd like... Tradeoffs! At least I still have Firewire.
The two big externals help a lot with video editing. Even with my old G5 PowerMac, you could immediately drive two 1080p-equivalent displays. I expect that someone will release a much-more powerful solution than the Matrox USB 2 screen driver dongle, etc., sometime soon, using "superfast" USB 3, but I'll lose one of my two USB 3 ports; I'll want to have 'em both free for other externals, I'm sure.
    Thoughts and/or solutions?

    For those following this thread...
There is a posting elsewhere here in Discussions that describes how to get two large external monitors running on a recent Macbook Pro by using only ONE Apple Thunderbolt Display, then daisychaining a LaCie Thunderbolt drive after the T-Bolt display, and this allows adding another large DVI display in the chain after the LaCie.
Still pricey, since it does involve buying one Apple Thunderbolt Display, plus a LaCie drive, and cables, plus the DVI display, but it's around half a thousand dollars cheaper than two Apple T-Bolt displays, plus you have a very fast LaCie external drive.
Still not what I'm looking for, but if you're interested, here's a link...

  • Can't see timeline on external monitor?

This may end up being something painfully obvious that I missed - in that case, sorry in advance. =)
I can't see the timeline. The setup is as follows: Firewire DV to camera>Svideo out of camera to external monitor.
AV settings: device control preset firewire ntsc, video playback Apple Firewire NTSC. AV Devices: Apple Firewire NTSC (mirror on desktop).
Under view menu: External video> all frames
    Video playback: Apple Firewire NTSC.
The camera is in VCR mode. I can control it from the log and capture window, so all connections are working. But the timeline will not show.
When the camera is in camera mode, I can see the number display on my external monitor.
Any idea where the problem lies here?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Aero switches off when extern monitor is rotated by Nvidia ControlPanel

    Please see subject
Aero works fully when desktop is expanded to the 2nd monitor in normal view.
    any workaround ?

sorry, I forgot to mention my hw: Satellite a100-02b ( geforce go 7600 )
.. and when I reboot Vista behaves a bit strange.
a few seconds all seems ok but then it sets back the external monitor to 16-bit colour and minimum Vfrequency ( 60 HZ )
and a message pops up that the "Desktop windows manager" has been closed due to a problem.
    Is this perhaps because..
    1) It's an old CRT, not specially known ( standard pnp-driver )?
    2) the vista capability of the graphics adapter is not sufficient in this configuration ?
I heard somewhere that there is a switch in the registry, that disables the dwm.exe's test, whether the hardware is
able to support the aero-technologies. would that be a way to fix that ?

    Hi,
    and thanks!

    > You have switched the display to the second external
    > monitor then you have changed the display position
    > (you have rotated the display) and you have tried to

    > Am I right???
No I've EXPANDED the desktop to the 2nd monitor. In normal view Aero works right then on BOTH monitors.
Only when I rotate the extern monitor this problem occurs.
I think, that this special configuration is a bit unique ( but very comfortable to work on )
and therefore not foreseen ( eeh, sorry for my english ) by the programmers of the drivers or
    the dwm-team at MS.
ok, when I add the 1280*800 of the laptop screen and the 768*1024 of the CRT
I end up at 2048*1024 ( the unused area included )which is quite near to the absolute maximum of 2048*1536 the graphics adapter
supports on ONE monitor at all. Perhaps that's just too much...
on the http://support.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB7101O90002R01.htm you mentioned, the limit for aero with my 128 MByte VideoRam
would be 2.304.000 pixels - but only when one monitor is in use. There's no information about multi-monitor use.
so what, Aero is not that important, but when I have some time again, I will experiment a bit...
    Ciao !

  • Can I have a dedicated external monitor in Premiere CS5/CS5.5 using two nVidia GPUs?

    Hi there one and all.
I have a new Windows 7 64bit system and I am trying to work out if I can use my 2nd graphics card in a way to give me a dedicated external monitor output when using Premiere CS5.5? (and After Effects too if thats possible???)
My cards I have are the nVidia MSI GTX 470 and I have the choice of either my old nVidia 8800GT or old nVidia Quadro FX3700.
I can hook up 4 monitors as a desktop no problem, but I do not know if or how it is possible to display my Premiere timeline on the external monitor as a dedicated connection? If not do I maybe need something like the Black Magic Intensity/Shuttle card or Matrox Mini?
Any help would be very greatly appreciated.
    Thanks - Bradley

Thanks Harm for such a quick response! much appreciated.
I see you said a GTX 450 would work to give the dedicated external monitor, does this mean that my poor old 8800GT has finally dried up in terms of helping my system or is it possible to use this card to provide a source monitor for Premiere?
With regards to the setting up of the 2nd card to not use the Hardware MPE, is this set from within premiere?
    Thanks again!

  • Frustrated! Can't I use an external monitor?

I plugged in the adapter to my 17" LCD. My screen background appears on my LCD but that's it. No icons, no nothing, just the pic of my son. I changed my background settings on my Powerbook and nothing happened on the LCD. It just stays the same. The entire LCD is just a picture with no mouse, no icons - nothing. What am I doing wrong? Also, I thought on the Powerbooks, you can close the lid but the external monitor stays alive. On mine, it goes off when the lid is closed. Please help. Thanks

    P.,
In yr System Preferences, there is a 'detect displays' function in Displays. You shd find what you need there by clicking on it & then 'arrangement.' In order to have windows or items on the 2nd display (external) you need to drag them there.
    Here's the closed-lid tip: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Can MBA connect to 2 external monitors?

I have been using a dual-display graphics card in a PC for some time, with 2 monitors connected to make a large working area. Is it possible to do this with the MBA? Is the mini displayport to DVI compatible with dual-display? So far, I have been able to successfully use the MBA with lid closed connected with one external monitor. Cheers!

My impression is that the dual-display adaptor may work with one of those Y DVI splitters for dual-monitor cards. But is anyone certain about this?

  • Safari Can't Play Video in External Monitor

There have been a couple of threads on here about this but few answers that work.
For some reason, Safari 5 will not play web videos on an external monitor regardless of whether it's on YouTube or any other site. It will play videos on my primary Macbook monitor but only shows a black screen on my external. Firefox and Chrome certainly do. I prefer to use Safari and would like to know if anyone has a fix for this other than telling us to use the other browsers.
As indicated in the signature to this post, I have the original black Macbook and am using Snow Leopard.

This is ridiculous. Video windows simply don't show up on many sites for me, i.e., MacMost. No problems in Firefox. I tried all the aforementioned solutions, trashed prefs, disabled extensions, repaired permissions, etc. No good. Safari is supposed to be THE superior browser. I hate the idea of going to Firefox, but I may have to. Safari isn't worth the grief. Any other solutions are wekcome.

  • Can I use an additional external monitor for my mid-2010 MacBook?

I currently run my MacBook in clamshell mode with an external monitor, keyboard, etc.  I have researched usb to VGA or DVI conversion kits but all of the sources seem outdated.  I don't need HDMI because my sound output goes through my MiniPort Display, out through speakers connected to my primary monitor.  I am aware that a usb connection will come with lag, but it isn't that big of a deal.  Thank you for your help!

If I correctly understand you question: you have an external monitor, and you use your mac with lid closed (not a good idea at all if used for a long time, especially in warm/hot weather). Now, you want a second monitor connected via USB.
My small piece of advice is to use your MB with lid open and thus you have two monitors, beside this, you protect your mac by a proper ventilation, which is better when lid is open.
    Other ideas are here:

  • Can't use only the external monitor, leaving macbook open on Lion

    HW
    macbook pro 15-inch, Early 2011
external samsung monitor, attached using HDMI to Thunderbolth adaptor
    Previous Situation
With Snow Leopard I was able to keep the macbook screen open but turned off and use only the external monitor. This way I was able to use the front camera to make conference having everything only in the external monitor.
    Current Situation
With Lion as soon as I open the macbook monitor the image splits between the two monitors and I'm not able to set the extenal one as only one.

Support today quoted Apple's engineers as saying it is "expected behaviour" under Lion for the MBP's internal display to reactivate upon opening the lid, even if you want to use only your external display. A new version of the clamshell mode-related knowledgebase article (replacing HT3131) is due shortly confirming this.
    This is despite:
    - the obvious temperature-related benefits that were achievable (under Snow Leopard) by opening your MBP lid whilst continuing to output solely to, say, a 27" cinema display
    - potential wifi connectivity benefits of having the lid open
    - the waste of energy and inefficient use of graphics processing power in needlessly running two active screens (ie if running your MBP in clamshell mode would otherwise make it too hot and/or noisy or you need it open for wifi)
    - the negative longer-term impact on the battery and other components from running the MBP any hotter than it needs to be.
To have any hope of getting the previous behaviour back, we need to lobby Apple to change how Lion handles clamshell mode. Options available to them include changing Lion's expected behaviour or adding a user-selectable option within System Preferences.
If you haven't already submitted feedback, please do so below. Now the situation has been clarified as intentional, user feedback has become all the more important.
