Can I sync the same iTunes library on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro?

Can I sync the same iTunes library on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro?  I've been connecting my iPhone to each and it's causing problems for me with them being different, despite my purchases always being under the same Apple ID.

The easy way to do this is to keep the library on an external drive which you can plug into either computer.  Of course this isn't always the desirable solution.  You can try routinely copying the library from computer to computer though this gets tiresome.

  • Can i share the same iTunes Match account across my iMac and my MacBook?

I recently subscribed to iTunes Match and am in the process of uploading my entire collection of files from my home iMac into the Cloud. This works fine for my iPhone and iPad, but not for my MacBook (which I use at work). Every time I try to 'Turn on iTunes Match' on the laptop (which has no music files on it), it says 'only one library can be matched at a time. If you continue, the other iTunes Match session will be stopped and this computer's library will be matched instead.
I'm worried that if I press 'Add computer' on my laptop, it'll undo all the work I did on my home iMac (it took days as I have so many music files). Can iTunes Match be use across TWO Apple computers? It seems to be asking me to choose between one or the other.
    Please help.

    Hi,
Have you finished adding match from your imac. If so, wait until this is complete before using it on you MacBook.
If you have, you should not be getting the massage about matching only one library at a time. However, if you do select to continue, it wll not undo what you have already done.
Do you have any different music on your MacBook? If so, this will be added to your match library. You will see all your matched / uploaded music on your MacBook as it does on your iPhone or ipad.
If the match process had not complete on your imac, it will continue until complete.
Essentially, you can only match one library at a time.

    Hi julian KAYE!
You will want to make sure that both your computer and phone have all options checked in the “Start new conversations from” section in your Messages settings:
    iOS: Using Messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3529
You can change the address that new iMessage conversations are started with in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Start new conversations from. Note that this setting applies only to new conversations. If you would like to change the address from which messages are sent, first change this setting, and then delete the existing conversation and start a new one.

  • Can you use the same charging cable for both an iPhone and an IPad or are they different?  When I use the charging cable for my iPhone on my Ipad, it doesn't charge.

Can you use the same charging cable for both an iPhone and an IPad or are they different?  When I use the charging cable for my iPhone on my Ipad, it doesn't charge.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro with two different iTunes libraries. Hello henrik100,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Home Sharing in iTunes is designed to let you easily share your iTunes media libraries between up to five computers in your household.

  • ITunes on both current iMac and new macbook pro

I've been searching the forums, but not finding my answer. I have my iMac with my itunes media library. Just got a macbook pro and signed into itunes on the macbook with same itunes user account as I use on the imac. I had some impression all the media from the itunes imac library would mirror over to the macbook. Didnt happen. So do I need to physically copy the media folder from the imac itunes to the macbook itunes media folder to mirror itunes onto the two macs? And what about apps? My main concern are music files and movie/TV files that I want mirrored.
I was just going to copy the one imac itunes media folder over to the new macbook itunes.
But wanted to check if anyone had any other suggestions, first.

If you want to have a copy of the whole iTunes library, keeping your actual settings and everything else, you have to copy the whole "iTunes" folder, on the Music folder, to the MacBook. This will copy everything: apps, music, TV shows, books, etc. If you don't need the settings, just copy the "iTunes Media" folder to the "iTunes" folder of your MacBook.
You can do this with an external drive > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751 (Do the last step on your MacBook)

  • How can I sync the same iTunes 11 library between 2 users on the same Mac?

With iTunes 10 I was able to have one main iTunes library under one user and have a second user (on the same Mac) access it by putting an alias of the iTunes Libray.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml files in the second user's iTunes folder.  This ensured that the library remained synced regardless of which user added or made changes to it.  With iTunes 11, I am no longer able to do this.  If I try I get the following error pop up:  'The iTunes application could not be opened.  An unknown error occured (13014)'.  If I delete the aliases in the second user's account the error message goes away but nothing shows up in the main iTunes window.
I've been able to at least access the iTunes library (which is stored on an external drive) with the second user by changing the iTunes media folder location in advanced preferences to the main iTunes library and then selecting file/add to library and selecting the iTunes media file which (eventually) pulls up all the song/movie/apps etc. information.  However, the 2 libraries do not remain synced (i.e. a change in one does not show up in the other).
Anyone know of a way to get one library to remain synced between 2 user accounts on the same machine with iTunes 11 or am I going to be forced to delete and recreate the second user's iTunes info frequently to 'catch up' with the original?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm surprised the alias method worked, and it certainly isn't the prescribed method.

  • Syncing the same iTunes library among multiple computers

I have two computers, a Windows 7 laptop and a new iMac. iTunes on both computers are signed into the same Apple ID. I currently have my iTunes library on my laptop, but I would like to also have the exact same library on my iMac. For instance, if I download a new podcast to my laptop, it should be placed on my iMac as well. When I delete the podcast, it should be deleted on the iMac too. When song metadata is updated on my laptop (play count, lyrics, etc), I want it updated on the iMac automatically.
I have not had much experience with Home Sharing, but would that do all of this automatically? I know I could manually transfer songs from one computer to the other using Home Sharing, but what about updated metadata or deleting files?
iCloud has made this situation more interesting. I know iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match will keep music files in sync among various devices (including metadata?), but what about podcasts or movies or files not purchased via iTunes? I know there are plenty of details that are yet to be released concerning iCloud, but do you think it will solve this problem entirely, or will manual labor be required to obtain the exact same library among multiple computers?
I have considered only using my iMac to maintain my library, since it is always on and I could use Home Sharing to listen to music on my laptop since they are on the same Wifi network. However, I feel it would be best to keep the same library on two computers for when I take my laptop on vacation away from my home network.
What would you suggest for this situation?
    Thanks!

sorry about the slight irrelevence of this post on this thread....i saw this much older post you had in my explorations and it is almost to a "T" my issue currently and i was wondering if you ever came to a conclusion or had any tips or resolution paths i could explore. your original message:
I have 2 computers I'd like to set up Home Sharing on. One is Windows XP and the other is Windows 7.
I set it all up but then the libraries never show up. Nothing happens.
The computers are on the same network and I can successfully share files and a printer. Both computers are      authorized using the same account. Both are signed into that account.
I don't know why it's not working. Can you please help?
              Thanks!!
is EXACTLY my problem with the only variable being that both of my computers run 7. furthermore, you went on to say you were experiencing issues with the "remote" app. that was the initial objective for me in my system that got me here with a deeper problem with home share. i want to home share my itunes library and control it from my iPod touch 4g. is that such an unreasonable request?!?!? lol. i'm incredibly frustrated and was hoping that since you had such specifically similar circumstances....have you found a solution? PLEASE HELP!!! thank you so much for your time.

  • Can I use the same iTunes library on 2 macs?

I have 2 macbooks. The audio files are stored on the external harddrive.
Does each macbook has to have its own library or can they be using the same library -- and always display the same playlists, etc.?
    How do I do that?
    Thanks,
    Sasi

Keep all the files for the library on the ext HD. This includes the Album Art, iTunes Library file, .xml files etc.
This way any time you are opening the library it will have all the files available. Hold down the 'option' key when launching iTunes and direct the Mac to the ext HD.

  • Can I have the same iTunes library on 2 computers?

I have iTunes on my desktop PC, but now I want to use it on my laptop.
I've downloaded iTunes on the laptop, but when I log in to my account, none of my music appears.
I have my library backed up on my desktop hard drive, so do I have to import all of that music onto my laptop?
I guess I assumed that my account could go with me where ever I signed in.

How to Copy and Move your Music Files from One Computer to Another
This is the conceptual framework with related and important links. Apply and adapt it to your specific situation and equipment resources.
The safest, quickest, and most optimal method to move your Library to a new computer is to actually clone the entire ‘iTunes’ folder (directory) structure, rather than just copying just the song files. By copying the entire ‘iTunes’ folder and all sub-folders, you capture not only the music files, but the all-important ‘iTunes Library.itl’ database file (usually located in the ‘iTunes’ folder), which contains all the data about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
Install iTunes on the new computer. Then go back to your old computer and move (copy) the "iTunes" folder which usually resides inside your "…\My Documents\My Music" folder from the old computer to the exact same place (both Drive Letter and complete Path) on the new computer. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will look and behave exactly the same way it did on the old, Play Counts, Ratings, Comments and all!
NOTE: It is usually safer moving files between computers with the same version of iTunes!!
Here's a list of methods to copy and move your music files from one computer to another:
    1) Use an External Hard Drive (ExHD) to move the complete files and Folder structures from one computer to another (my preferred option). You can clone’ the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure in one very easy step. Also great to have available for complete backups of your Library. External hard drives now run less than $100 for 200-250GBs of storage. See This Link
    2) Directly connect the two computers....
    - 2a) Connect them through a Router &/or Network
    - 2b) Directly connect using an Ethernet cable: Straight for using at least one Mac; or Crossover for PC/PC Instructions here.
    - 2c) Connect them via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. Example here. There are various types out there (use Google).
....Then copy the files from one computer to the other.
    3) Use the iPod as a transfer device, as this extensive Apple link explains. It will be a bit easier if your iPod has a larger capacity than your music collection, otherwise you will need to perform multiple copy/move transfers. This well written process also works fine while using any other data transfer medium (ExHD, Flash Drive, DVD, CD, Zipp, Jazz, etc.).
    4) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7GBs each) with your music data files and folder structure, and load them onto the new computer. Re-writable DVDs are more cost effective (if your DVD drive can manage these types).
    5) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #4 above and load the files and folders on the new computer. Re-writable CDs are more cost effective (if your CD drive can manage these types).
    6) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB - 4GB) to move the files and folders. Best if the flash drive is larger than your Library, otherwise you will need multiple copy/move transfers.
These are links to various additional instructions on performing the transfer (read them all, but some listed steps may not be required depending on your specific situation):
