Can I upgrade iOS and still retain *everything*, if I didn't authorize Apple ID and didn'nor had I performed a manual backup?

I am an IT guy here helping 10+ iPad and iPhone users upgrading to iOS 5.  I have finished the first two devices, by the following steps:
Obtain the user's Apple ID and password
Get to a clean computer (precisely, logon to a clean profile)
Authorize the user's ID in iTunes
Transfer purchases (then it will download all installed apps)
Maannuly perform a backup (1), just in case.
Perform iOS5 update following the standard procedure.
Then during the process, iTunes backs up the device again (I am not sure if this backup (2) has any different from the one that I've done manually), but after everything is done, all apps with their data, account setting, camera roll, even the placing of app icons seemed to be restored to the updated device 100% successfully.
Deauthorize Apple ID.  "Next one please."
THAT WAS VERY TIME CONSUMING!!
My question is, what will happen if I upgrade a device without doing step 1 through 5 first ?  Will backup (2) still backs up everything and restore it,although the user's ID was not authorized in this copy of iTunes?
If this works then it wil save me a lot of time.  I can't risk to test it because if it doesn't work, I won't have a good backup to restore the user's data.
(PS) If you asked me why don't I do this on each user's computer?  The reason is because some of them do not have a computer, and for those who does have computer, most of them do not have iTunes installed.

In summary, there is no way, for me to fully restore all apps that my users had installed (purchased / free), without authorizing their Apple ID's to iTunes on the computer which I am using to perform the iOS upgrade for them ?
However, I found out it is possible that my nightmare will end after all devices get upgraded to iOS5. Through some tests that I did, I found an interesting fact:
- Backup to iTunes:
You need to authorize every single Apple ID on iTunes, so it can back up apps and restore for you.
- Backup to iCloud:
Since there is no action of authorizing, it will backup and restore all of your apps, whcih were installed by different Apple ID, or totally different than the ID of iCloud account.
*I tested this scenario by backing up a device with only 2 apps installed by 2 diffrent Apple ID's (of course, one of them is used as iCloud account to back up), this device has never been connected to iTunes on a computer, I performed a backup to cloud, wipe the device, restore from the cloud, and both apps, purchased by different Apple ID's, were restored!
But I need to run more tests and confirm that it works.

  • Since upgrade ios  and iTunes can't access homeshare on ipad

Since upgrade ios and iTunes can't access homeshare on ipad. I see 'share', when using music app on iPad. I click on it and then select my MacBook Pro. Circle starts goes half way the stops. My Apple TV works great. So iTunes on MacBook must be set up right.  Videos app is similar, the circle just spins and spins. My wifi is an apple airport. I beginning to think I have invested badly. I have signed out and in  again of home share on iPad and MacBook  as advised. I have read and re-read. Is there a solution?

    Hello Gary,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Home Sharing.  It sounds like you are not able to access iTunes from your iPad using Home Sharing.  I found an article with steps that I think would help with this issue.
I recommend reviewing the full article below, but I think steps 4-7 are specifically useful for what you described:

  • I have an older macbook pro os x 10.5.8 , processor 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo 2gb . Can I upgrade it and is it worth doing?

i have an older macbook pro os x 10.5.8 , processor 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo 2gb . Can I upgrade it and is it worth doing?

    Yes. Here's the information:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Only you can decide if it's worth doing.

  • Can I upgrade Student and Teacher CS5 Extended with Lightroom

The above is the question. I am no longer a student (Coupon Code can be provided) but can I add Lightroom to my CS5 Extended? Children all have left College or Uni and home.

There are no students left in the house in fact the graphic artist is now in England and on his way in October to South America. Hence I will have to buy it for myself as CS5 is a little too complicated for a 74 year old like myself.
I assume that the $149.99 is either $ AUS or $ US. Perhaps you can tell me which and if a pension runs to it I will  buy Lightroom 5 as it seems more within my comprehension and considerably faster to do the things I need.  Many thanks for your prompt reply as I was more than agreeably surprised with same. I really am sincere about buying Lightroom5 for myself.
    Sincerely,
    Brian Gidley

  • Can't upgrade iOS 4.3.3 to iOS 5.1 on iPad

I'm trying to help a technophobe friend update her iPad from 4.3.3 to 5.1. She's done no upgrades to her iOS since getting her iPad. I've done each of mine seamlessly. I am completely perplexed and haven't found an answer to our dilemma since we embarked on this quest. To make it more challenging for me, she has a PC so I'm in foreign territory working on her computer. She also hasn't turned on her laptop in the year she's had her iPad so we had to update iTunes. That part went fine.
We ended up syncing her iPad about three times so all of her apps and music are up to date on the PC and the iPad. The update of the of the iOS appeared to work each time. It took the 89 minutes it predicted at the start. The update message says it's 5.1 and it says it will install after downloading. We have now gone through this process FOUR times. That's a lot of hours for nothing. The last time we actually babysat the process. It was as exciting as watching paint dry. It appeared to flow fine concluded in front of our eyes. The ipad switched to the wallpaper screen and had a small tone. The Apple came back to the top iTunes banner. Then NOTHING. I checked Settings>General>About and it still said Version 4.3.3. We uncounted the iPad, turned it off and powered it up again and it is still on 4.3.3.
    What are we doing wrong?
Her iPad is the Verizon model and I saw in one thread that said there are three varieties of upgrades but I don't know how to verify the right one is downloading from iTunes. I would hope the iTunes connection can detect which version is needed.
I also found on the Apple website the list of four upgrades she neglected before 5.1. It indicates those older updates are available in iTunes but I can't figure out where to get to them. The Upgrade button goes right to the 5.1 version. I'm wondering if there are components in those incremental updates that she needs before 5.1 will work, or does 5.1 install everything she's missed along the way?
Any help or insight on this frustrating situation will be appreciated.

I solved this problem with detective work and hints from another discussion thread. I detailed my solution here on the 3 April 2012 entry of the following thread:
iOS 5.1 won't upgrade my iPod & iPad 2 on my newer mac, but it will install perfectly to my sisters same model iPod using an old windows laptop in the same internet connection in the same house

Perhaps someone else is struggling with the same roadblock. You cannot jump from 4.3.3 to 5.0 or beyond over a wireless connection. You must be plugged in with an ethernet connection to your internet. After 5.0 you can update OTA, translation Over The Air.
I don't know if the OP (Original Poster) was trying to do it wirelessly with a Mac, but in my case it had nothing to do with being on a PC or Mac (with the exception of me being in foreign territory in her house and on her PC - MacLoyal, I am) and everything to do with not having a wired connection to the net.

  • Lost contacts when upgrading ios and merging to cloud

I recently upgraded to iOS ver 6.0  Came to a question to "merge with Cloud".  I had not intentionally used iCloud before but assuming merge ment the union of what was on iCloud and what was on phone, checked yes.
All my contacts were lost!  on the phone.  I have gone through the advice to turn off contacts/cloud etc to no avail.
The original data is not on the icloud.com!
Is there any way to recover original contacts?
    thanks!

They will be in whatever program/cloud service you have been syncing.
If you have failed to sync them, then they are likely gone.
You can try restoring from backup.

  • Upgraded ios and ipad doesnt work

my ipad just has the itunes logo with the cable icon and wont do anything else since upgrading to ios.
I have tried rebooting but to no avail - help

How long did you let it sit on that screen?  I remember almost turning off my iPad because it looked frozen on that screen but after I waited a little longer, it rebooted itself.  Honestly iOS 7 is horrible, it broke my wifi and caused many other problems.  Have you tried resetting the firmware to default?  If you can, do that and wait for an update to 7 to come out before thinking of upgrading.
