Can I upgrade my Power Mac G3 (Blue and White) to USB 2.0?

I have a B&W G3 (300 Mhz) and a slot loading iMac ((600Mhz) both running 10.3.9. My daughter is looking into buying an iPod Nano which requires USB 2.0 How do I know whether either machine is USB 2.0 compatible ? If not can a USB 2.0 card be installed ?
thanks

Currently you only have USB 1.1. To get USB 2.0, you need to install a USB 2.0 PCI card. However, not all USB PCI cards work in a Mac. Best bet is any card with a NEC PD72101 chipset (xlr8yourmac results recommend the same).Read this for more feedback:

All of these Cards are NEC chipset based

  • Can an OS  upgrade for Power Mac 5400, 5500, and 6500 be used for the 7200?

I have a Power PC 7200 with OS 7.5.1 and got an upgrade to 7.6.1 off ebay. The disc
is labeled 5400, 5500 and 6500 series. Can I use it on my 7200?

Looking at the initial sell date of the various models reveals the following:
    7200 - Aug 95
    5400 - Apr 96
    5500 - Feb 97
    6500 - Feb 97
Since the 3 models listed on the CD were released after the 7200, I would think that it probably would not work. But I would try to see if it works. You might get a message saying you can't install it on the 7200. What you might do is duplicate the System folder on the 7200. Then try to install. If the install doesn't work or corrupts the system files, you can trash the "updated" and then use the duplicated system folder.

  • Can I run airport on my Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White)?

Hi, I would like to get my old G3 to go wireless. Can this be done?

You can install an 802.11g PCI card in your G3, which will run faster than an AirPort card. Just make sure the card is Mac compatible and has drivers compatible with whatever OS you're running (the Yosemite G3 will run OS X 10.4.11 with no trouble). RealTek made one that worked well as I recall.

  • I need a monitor to access to older psd documents in a G3 blue and white

I can't access older psd and illustrator files i ran on OS9

    Hi,
Take a look at the upper PCI card of your Power Macintosh G3 blue and white. It should have a standard VGA (D-Sub 15) port, meaning that a whole range of monitors (Apple or third-party, both CRT and older LCD) can be connected. If an Apple monitor cable has a larger DB-15 plug, it is possible to use a Mac-to-VGA adapter.
BTW, since the computer apparently has been in storage for some time, check the condition of the 3.6 V logic board lithium battery. A low battery voltage can cause various difficulties.

Hi Aaron, should work if it meets these requirements...
    System requirements
Supported Computers:[2]PowerMac G3, G4, early PowerMac G5, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 orG4, or iBook computer
Amount of RAM Required: 128 megabytes (MB) (Although 256 MB to 512 MB is highly recommended by many people who have used Mac OS X v10.2.8 as the real amount of RAM used when only the Operating System is running is around 200 MB, but it can be run with as low as 96 MB) although it will not run at full speed.
Processor Type: PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 running at 233 MHz or higher.

  • Cannot upgrade my Power Mac G5 Dual Processor (CPU type: PowerPC G5  (3.0))  to Mac OS 10.4 - anybody knows how to do this

Trying desperately to upgrade my Power Mac G5 Dual Processor to Mac OS X.4 - what kind of upgrade is needed? How may I proceed?

    Hello Jens,
Might be easier to get Leo/10.5.x
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...
G5 PCIe options are listed here:

  • I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

i have a g3 blue and white 350mhz, and it has no video feed it powers up and the hard disk spins up but no video feed

That 17" NEC e700 display is a late-90s CRT type with a 4:3 aspect ratio.  The Apple/ATI Rage 128 in a B&W G3 can handle all of its supported resolutions.  When you wrote that you had tried booting from the OS installer disk as was suggested, what bootable disk did you use?  A model-specific disk from another Mac won't necessarily boot the B&W G3.   Do you hear the startup tone when the computer powers ON?  If so, did you try zapping the PRAM?  Immediately after powering ON the computer, simultaneously press/hold down these (4) keys: Command + Option + P + R.  Continue holding them down until you hear the startup tone a third time.  Release the keys and see if the computer starts up normally with a display signal.  Have you tried the NEC display with another computer, to verify that it works properly?  If it has a detachable VGA cable, have you tried another cable?  I don't know how you acquired the computer or what (if any) claims were made as to its functionality.  Sometimes, computers are retired from fleet use when the time and expertise needed for troubleshooting a problem aren't available.  Perhaps this B&W G3 had a bad graphics card?  I bought a "condition unknown" B&W G3 (Rev. 1) once that wouldn't display a video signal when powered ON.  The 9 GB Ultra SCSI hard drive was making such a high-pitched whine and was hotter than normal.  I removed and disassembled the drive, and found that the read/write heads were completely worn off the ends of the arms, which badly scratched the platters.  The point I'm making is that many of those computers are high-mileage units and are more likely to have a hardware problem.

  • Upgrading a Power Mac from a PowerBook?

I'd like to upgrade my Power Mac from Panther to Tiger, and have recently purchased a PowerBook that came with Tiger (gray 10.4.2 discs). I gather from physically trying it, then searching this list, that the grey discs won't work. What I've not seen addressed is whether it's possible to get Tiger on the Power Mac directly from the PowerBook?
    Thanks.

Correct. The discs that come with a specific model are only usable on that model. You would have to purchase a retail version of Tiger on eBay or from FastMac.com or by calling AppleCare and ordering a copy (it may be several weeks delay.)
If you were to clone from your other computer you'd have the same problem. The installed version of Tiger from the gray discs also will not work on your other computer for the same reason the installer doesn't work.

  • Hi, I would like to buy a power mac G4 quicksilver and install the latest hardware i.e. i5, SSD etc., is this possible?

Hi, I would like to buy a power mac G4 quicksilver and install the latest hardware i.e. i5, SSD etc., is this possible?

Intel i5 processor upgrade? No way, no how with the OEM PPC board.
The "Latest" hardware that can be used with the original G4 motherboard is imited to used 7445/7447/7448 3rd party processor upgrades (all obsolete), PCI expansion, AGP graphics (only used as all are obsolete), new IDE drives (capacity support dependant on model year) and PC133 memory.
SATA and SSD can be used, but only with PCI SATA controllers or the specially configured IDE modded SSD from OWC.
PCI controllers will get you about SATA 1 data rates. The adapted SSD on IDE won't get beyond 60 MB/s.
You could use the case and put a mini ITX or micro ATX board in to support the i5. Of course you could then run Windows 7. If you want to run OS X, discussion ends here and begins your use of Google and searching for "x86" and "Hackintosh".
