Can I use a cable to connect my macbook pro to a tv?

I have a macbook pro (late 2008) with intel GMA x3100 video adapter.  I'd like to get a cable to watch dvds on a tv using the mini display port.  I've found several mini DVI to HDMI cables and adapters but want to make sure that these will work prior to purchasing.

There is no way to gurantee that they will work, buy one, exchange it if it does not work.

• I bought an HDTV cable to connect my MacBook Pro to my Sony TV via HDMI so I could watch videos from my computer on my TV.  My TV then shows my basic computer background but the videos won't play.  What am I doing wrong?

I bought an HDTV cable to connect my MacBook Pro to my Sony TV via HDML.  The TV recognizes my computer; I see my basic computer screen on the TV. I tried to watch videos on my TV but got nothing. (tried via my facebook vidoes and Youtube.  What am I doing wrong?

I've got a similar (but different!) problem: I have a MacBookPro3,1 running Mac OS X 10.6.8. I want to connect to my HD TV using a HDMI to DVI cable but the MBP cannot detect the TV display. What's the solution? Is this a bug in Mac OS X 10.6.8 ? Any ideas what I can do to make things work with the HDMI to DVI cable. (N.B.: I have separate audio cable running from the MBP to amplified speakers for the sound side of things. It’s the video that’s the problem!)

There was some updayts for my iPad 4 automatically downloaded. After installing it, the iPad began to restart itself every few minutes.
I tryed to update my iPad using iTunes. After connecting to MacBook Pro, where is installed all latest software, iPad is recognised as "iPad", Serial Number: n/a. iTunes run recovery mode, trying to restore iPad firmware, and in the end unknown error occured (3). Tried many times, not results. And now iPad stays only in recovery mode, can't switch it off.  How can I solve this problem please?

When I restart my iPad the connect to iTunes comes up and stays on until it shuts down again, I have read a report from Apple support suggesting I reinstall iTunes so I might try that again and also your suggestion which i shall also try, but thanks again - rg1547

• Can I use an USB disc with my macbook pro bought in 2005.  What capacity will it take 2.00 or 3.00?

can I use an USB disc with my macbook pro bought in 2005.  What capacity will it take 2.00 or 3.00?

The first MacBook Pro's were not released until the beginning of 2006, and they had USB 2 ports.
Anything available new in 2005 would have been a PowerBook G4 and they also had USB 2 ports.
A USB 3 disk will just transfer data slower then it could do, if you plug it into a USB 2 port though, so you can buy either.

• Can I use Dell AOI 922 printer with MacBook Pro?

Can I use Dell AOI 922 printer with MacBook Pro?

Cisco:
Very helpful!   My set up was Mac/ Lion trying to Print off a Dell Photo A10 922
Lion does not store any Lexmark, nor dow Apple, but I went to the lexmark site, and found this-
http://support.lexmark.com/index?productCode=LEXMARK_X5270&page=product&locale=E N&userlocale=EN_US#1
Downloaded that, then hooked up the printer, Cmd-P, and the Mac found the drivers I had loaded.
Works fine.  Now when I go to my sisters, I can print!
byw, I'm probably just a Level 2  "GIYF"er, but your the only one ( of MANY folks) who thought to search Lexmart. I've seen posts by MANY geeks saying a Mac could not print to ANY Dell printer.

• Can I use straight cable to connect trunk ports between 2 switches?

Hi,
Am I able to use straight instead of cross cable to connect trunk ports between 2 switches??
thanks!

Hi Devang,
When a 10/100 Fast Ethernet interface is enabled, one end of the link must perform media dependent interface (MDI) crossover (MDIX), so that the transmitter on one end of the data link is connected to the receiver on the other end of the data link (a crossover cable is typically used).
The Auto-MDIX feature eliminates the need for crossover cabling by performing an internal crossover when a straight cable is detected during the auto-negotiation phase.
HTH, if yes please rate the post.

• I used an HDMI cable to connect my MacBook Pro and my TV, however, my computer won't recognize that my TV is connected. What do I need to do to be able to watch a movie from my Mac on my TV screen?

My Macbook doesn't have an HDMI port, so I bought a converter. So I now I have my HDMI connected to my Mac and my TV. The problem is, I can't figure out how to make my computer screen show up on my TV. Do I need to download different software or update something? Or is it as easy as changing a setting?
When I go to my display settings, my computer screen shows up as an option, but my TV does not. I don't think my computer is reading it is connected. Please help me.
I will openly admit that I don't know very much about computers, so if you can help me, please break your explaination down for me. This is the info for my Mac:
I have a Macbook Pro 13-inch,
Mid 2010 OS X
Version 10.9.3
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB

I am assuming that you are using a Mini Display to HDMI converter and then a HDMI cable.
Have you opened System Preferences>Displays and selected Detect Displays?
Ciao.

• Can I use the HDMI Out on my macbook pro retina for audio without connecting a video device?

While the MBP has TOSLINK output from the headphone jack, TOSLINK does not have the bandwidth to carry the high resolution audio from many blu-rays and DVD-Audio disks. I would like to hook my MBP to an audio-only HDMI sink so I can pipe the multichannel output to my surround speaker setup.
My concern is that the MBP will get "confused" and do one of the following things - both of which are "bad":
1) It will decide that a video device is there, and put the desktop on the nonexistent HDMI display OR
2) It will decide to send no signal at all (no video, no audio) because it sees no video device.
Any thoughts on this?
In short - thinking of using something like this: http://www.ambery.com/2hddodtsdihd.html
with the HDMI out of the MBP and then piping its 6 discrete analog outputs to my old (but excellent for computer speakers) Logitech Z680 setup.
But I want any movie video to remain unperterbed on my Thunderbolt display. And if I am not watching a movie and am just listening to multichannel FLACs or something, then I'd like to run the media player normally and have the usual desktop on my MBP or Thunderbolt display.
Any thoughts?
Thanks to all!!

QUESTION 1: Is there anyway that I can buy a new logic board with upgraded graphics card and it will work?
Not from Apple, you can go to the grey market if you choose but it is most likely that the only MB that will work is the one you already have.

I have also read a little bit into using the Thunderbolt port as a means to run an additional graphics card through, the hardware for it being built by a company named Sonnet.
QUESTION 2: Is this an option that will actually work with my Macbook Pro setup and give me better graphics card capabilities?
Maybe, if the Sonnet is properly Thunderbolt compatible it should.

• Can't use Install Disk to repair my MacBook Pro HD

Hi,
I ran the Mac Disk Utility on my MacBook Pro's HD and I got this screen:
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l320/brunotapia/help.gif

So I inserted the install disk so that I could boot up from the CD and run disk utility to repair my HD.
But the MacBook Pro keeps spitting out the disk. It reads other disks fine and this install disk reads on my friends computer so I know that both the MacBook Pro drive and the install disk are ok. So what could be causing my problem?
I have also tried to boot the computer from the disc holding the "C" key down, but the computer spits out the disk and boots up from the HD.
How can I repair the HD if I can't get the OS to boot from the install disk? What else can I do? Can I boot from another HD or Thumb drive? How about an iPod?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Bruno

Are you using the OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer? To startup from the installer disc first insert the disc in the optical drive (label side up.) If the computer does not allow the disc to mount on the Desktop then either your optical drive is bad or the installer disc is damaged or is not a valid installer disc for your model.
If the disc mounts on the Desktop then restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the spinning gear appears beneath the dark gray Apple logo.
If this still doesn't work then boot the computer into single-user mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white print. At the prompt enter or paste in the following:
/sbin/fsck -yf
Press return and wait. If you receive a message that the drive required repairs, then re-run the above command line until you receive a message that says the filesystem is OK. If you have to repeat the command more than seven times without receiving a filesystem OK message, then that means the drive cannot be repaired by fsck. If you have a utility such as Disk Warrior 4.0 or TechTool Pro 4.5.2 then you can boot from their CDs and attempt to repair the drive. If either or both fail then the drive will need to be reformatted.
I highly recommend backing up.
Yes, you can boot from any external drive provided it has a bootable copy of OS X installed on it. If you have a second Mac with Firewire ports then you can connect it to the MBP via a Firewire cable. Boot the MBP into Target Disk Mode and the other computer normally. The MBP's hard drive should appear on the other computer's Desktop. You can then repair the drive using Disk Utility or other disk repair utility.

• What is the best ethernet cable to connect a macbook pro to a wall jack?

Hey everyone, I have a 2012 macbook pro and next year for college I will need an ethernet cable for my dorm room. The only info my schools gives me about what cord to get is, "you will need is a standard (straight-through) Ethernet cable to connect the computer/device to wall jack." So my question to you all is, what is the best one that I can purchase? Thanks-Kevin.

Go to Best Buy, tell them you need to connect a computer to a wall jack.  Most of the cables out there are the correct ones (literally ... 95% of the ones in the store are) and you need to ask for the corss-over cables used to connect routers to briges (do not ask ... really, do not ask).
Do not pay top dollar for it.  I have a rag-tag fleet of cables in various stages or repair, but they mostly all work.

I currently use a 4TB My Cloud drive with my MacBook Pro. Great drive! I order another one yesterday, without first check to see if I can use two My Cloud drives on the same Mac. I have an iMac and I'm using the magic mouse. I just got a Macbook Pro and would like to use the mouse with this computer too.
How can I make it work in both computers?
I won't use them at the same time of course. I use one during the day, and the other at night so I'm hoping to make the mouse work in both.
Thanks in advance!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
You have been very helpful! I will try that! Thanks!!
PS: One last question, will it work if I put it in "sleep" mode or it has to be shut down?
Thanks again!
