Can I use a Windows 7 backup in a boot camp installation

Hi,
About to buy a Mac and I was just wondering if I could use a Windows Backup System Image to install Windows 7 using Boot Camp Assistant in the Mac or if I need to have a brand new copy of Windows.
Apologies if this sounds like an incredibly stupid question.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Ben

If you restore the system from the backup, you would recover all your stuff, configuration, apps, etc. However I concur that you will need a new Windows license. MS offers no way of deactivating a previous instance and transferring it to a new host, at least in the workstation version. Were it a Server version, you can disable the activation on the old host and reuse the license on the new (just checked).
The license/activation key is tied to the startup volume's UUID number, which is unique.

Running Windows or using a suite such as Libre Office. It is similar to Office 2007 for Windows, but runs on a Mac, and contains a database manage that is Access compatible.

What the question said also it'll be Windows 8.1 because that's the only one you can download from the M-soft store now.

The answer is simple and has been stated many times before.  Boot Camp will not allow you to install to an external drive.  Until now, Windows made it nearly impossible to install on an external drive, although I hear that has changed with Windows 8.1 (but I do not have personal experience with that).
If you use a different EFI boot loader, you might have much better luck installing Windows on an external drive, but Boot Camp does not support that.

  • Can I use Time Machine to backup to partition on external drive and a Time Capsule?

    Trying to plan in advance...
I was wondering if I can (with a laptop) use Time Machine for both:
    1. Creating Time Machine backups on a partiion of an external drive. My plan was going to create  2 partitions: one to be used for Time Machine backups of another external hard drive (that holds all of my media) and then the other partition was going to be a bootable clone of my internal drive (totally separate from Time Machine)
    and
    2. Also use Time Machine for my Time Capsule, to create Time Machine backups of my internal drive.
Is this possible? I had heard that you can't use TM to make backups to a partition on an external drive, AND use it for another drive (like Time Capsule) at the same time. But I would think that this should be possible-
    Thanks everyone-

Yes you can, and if you are using Mountain Lion it's easy.
If you are using Snow Leopard (as in your profile - this is the Mountain Lion forum), you have to manually select the backup volume each time. Tedious, but possible.

What does this have to do with using an iPad?
But yes, you should be able to connect to your home WiFi network with multiple computers and devices. In my house my wife, my daughter and I will all be using the WiFi Internet connection at the same time with our Laptops and I will also be using my iPad, my daughter uses her iPhone, and we have no issues at all.
Is this what you want to know about?

It would appear under the organizer tab that the photos are organised in the lowest folder in the folder structure within Windows Explorer.  How can I use the Windows Explorer structure to organise the photos within Elements.

In a situation such as yours, I tend to consolidate items into folders so I have folders of nice workable numbers of images, somewhere between 20 and 200 images. Now, whatever, once you've imported, do your moving within LR, not the OS! I will select all in a folder and drag into a folder a level or two or three above, and then delete the newly empty subfolders. I hope this helps a bit!
Once you've reached just new Imports of camera output, you'll be flying along.

  • Can I use the Window XP bundled with MS virtual PC in setting up boot camp?

    Hi hi,
before having the new 24" iMac, I have MS office professional for Mac running on my 17" G5 iMac it. The bundle pack contains Window xp professional software running on Virtual pc program.
I want to install boot camp on my new intel mac but can i use the window xp program which is bundled with MS virtual pc software for setting up boot camp?
    please advise.
    iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Technically, so long as your bundled version is XP with service pack 2 then you should be able to use it.
Legally, no. When Windows comes with a PC, even a virtual PC, it's license is for an OEM installation. While it's still functionally the same as a copy you'd buy in the store its license is for use only with that PC it came with and no others.
    Hope this helps! bill

Can you use Windows 7 to partition a Boot Camp created dedicated PC drive (not just a PC partition on a Mac drive) into multiple PC partitions?

Can you download this utility, it is a close equivalent of the gpt command, but has more features? (It is more than likely that Windows took over and converted this to an MBR disk).

Once you have it installed you run it as follows. You can execute using either /dev/disk1 or /dev/rdisk1 as the parameter.
    type gdisk
    gdisk is /usr/sbin/gdisk
    sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
    Password:
    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.9

  • Can i use Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM for bootcamp?

    Someone suggested to use
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM for bootcamp.
Can i use Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM to use in bootcamp to install windows 7 on my mac book pro 13 inch?
    thank you.
PS: i bought my macbook pro 3 weeks ago.
Also, is there any other windows 7 installation CD that is cheaper?
    thank you.

    Yes.
OEM just means that the Windows OS is dedicated to that computer only. If you sell, replace or throw away the computer you use it on, the Windows CD/DVD goes along with it. (According to the Licensing dialog)
Just do a Yahoo/Google search for prices is the only way to find it cheaper. Or keep an eye on your favorite web store for sales.
If you are in college and have an .edu e-mail account thru the college then Microsoft has it for about $30 US. And other deals also.

  • Can i use both windows and OS X in the same hardisk

I want to install windows 7 ultimate(64 bit) on imac but if i install it can i use both OS X and windows in the same hardisk or do i have to plug in an external hardisk and can i still use OS X or only apple??

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. You can install Windows and OS X in the same hard drive, because that's the purpose of Boot Camp.
I see you are using OS X Mavericks, so you can install Windows 7 or 8 in Boot Camp > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US Then, follow these steps to install Windows > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf
After installing Windows, your Mac will start up in Windows by default. In order to choose in which operating system you want to start up, just hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting up.
If you do not want to do heavy tasks in Windows, another option you should consider is to install Windows in a virtual machine with the use of an app like VMware Fusion, VirtualBox or Parallels. This way is more secure and there's no risk to harm your Mac.
