Can i use an external drive in macbook pro mid 2012?

replaced my optical drive with new matshita UJ8A8 drive in my macbook pro 13 mid 2012. problem was prior to replacing every type of disc wold be ejected, now when disc goes in new drive makes a sound and then ejects???? any ideas? I have 16 gig of ram in pc

I'm not sure why it wouldn't? The Apple external USB SuperDrive will not work with your machine, but there are a lot of other third-party drives out there that should have no problem. Even though you have USB 3.0 ports on your machine, any USB 2.0 external optical drive should be fine -> a slow optical drive (and they're all slow at writing and reading asa  limitation of the media, not the port) is the norm.
If I were you, I would just check out one of the $30-50 Asus, LG, etc., external optical drives out there. It should work with any Mac.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • Can I use 1333MHz RAM in a MacBook Pro Mid 2012?

    Hi.
My MacBook Pro Mid ´12 comes with 4GB 1600MHz RAM. I upgraded this to 8GB 1333MHz. Does this cause a hot MacBook Pro near the battery?

    phlek wrote:
Can the 1333MHz RAM be the problem for heating?
Not likely.  Usually it will be a function of the stress placed on the CPU/GPU by applications.  Hardware faults may be another source of heat such as the fans.
I will buy Corsair Vengance, what do you think about this brand?
If the specifications are the correct ones, it should work.

  • Migration Assistant can't find External HD on MacBook Pro Mid-2012

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2012 running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and I am trying to use Migration Assistant to transfer Time Machine backups that are on my external hard drive, that I backed up from my old MacBook Mid-2010. The problem I am having is that Migration Assistant can't find my external hard drive. My MacBook Pro can find it when I plug it in (I see it in Finder), but Migration Assistant can't. Can anyone help or should I go to the Apple Store?  I need help with this problem as soon as possible.
    Thanks in advance,
    - Daniel 

Since no one replied I figured out how to do it myself.
1.) First I plugged in my external hard drive with my Time Machine backups on them, then I opened Finder and click on my external hard drive under devices.
2.) Next I clicked on and opened the folder named "Backups.backupdb"
3.) Once inside that folder I could see folders with the backups from Time Machine and all of the folders names were the date I backed up that backup. I clicked and opended the lastest backup folder.
4.) Inside that folder, I clicked and opened the folder named "Macintosh HD"
5.) Inside that folder, I clicked and opended the folder named "Users"
6.) Inside that folder, I clicked and opended the folder named "Daniel" which was my Username on my previous Mac.
7.) Finally I could see and access all my folders from my Time Machine backups from my previous Mac.
Keep in mind this is only helpful if you are trying to access old backups (backed up from another Mac) on a new or different Mac. (Sorry for the blurry images)
Hope this somehow helps someone else,

  • What are the things required to upgrade internal hard drive For Macbook Pro mid 2012 13 inch?

    Hi,
I want to upgrade my internal drive but I don't know how to do that. I have already purchased a WD 1TB internal hard drive. However, I contacted apple support and they said if I try to upgrade the hdd myself, then the warranty of the macbook would be void. I am from India . I currently have a Macbook Pro mid 2012,13 inch.
Also, do i need to download a setup of Yosemite before changing the hdd?
    Please guide me
    Thanks and Regards
    Abhineet Arora

You know what the impact will be on the warranty terms.  If you want to install it yourself, look at this video:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_13_unibody_mid12_hd/
It is not very difficult.  You will need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Torx drivers.

My answer was based on it's not really that much harder to use than plugging it in.
but I think the follow up would be ---HOW
Follow the very. very simple instructions that came with the AppleTV.
    Plug AppleTV in
    Connect it to your TV.
    Turn on AppleTV.
Launch iTunes on your computer and enable Home Sharing.
Settings > Computers and turn on Home Sharing. Use the same  AppleID as you use in iTunes on your computer.

  • What external raid devices can I use on my Non-Thunderbolt Macbook pro (Mid 2009)?

I'm looking for the best external Raid drive options for my non-thunderbolt port 2009 Macbook Pro.  I only require 2Tb total storage (prefer RAID 1 so it'll be 2x2tb drives, removeable).  Can I still use a thunderbolt drive or would I be wasting my $$ if I can't take advantage of the speed?
I have a 17" Macbook pro 5,2 (mid 2009) running 10.6.8 OS X (Snow Leopard), Intel core, without a Thunderbolt port.
    Thanks!

  • Solid State Drive For Macbook Pro mid 2012

    Hi Apple Users,
I would really appreciate some advice, a link would be great too.
I am using a mid 2012 macbook pro with 16gb ram. After trouble here and there, slowing down here and there to the point I'm about to crack - solution = Solid State Drive.
I use a variation of 2D & 3D Programs to design with which include photoshop, maya, modo and Mari. My laptop just can't cut it most of the time and I need whatever I can so I can get jobs done without any lag, freezing or spinning ball while my laptop tries to catch up.
I have browsed around for A solid State drive but what I found is confusing or at least I get somewhat lost in my search of plug and play. My built in hard Drive of 500gb has 350gb spare so going for a 250gb SSD seems the sensible option as I use my external HD to store my files, music etc.
I don't want to open my macbook and fiddle too much so any suggestions which are near enough 'plug and play' would be great. I am aware I will have to take the casing from my macbook but I want an SSD that -
    - Fits straight into my macbook pro from out of the box
    - I can use my time machine backup to put onto my new SSD without trouble and Can continue getting my design work done.
Budget wise I don't want to spend over £250 and that reminds me I would like to purchase from A uk website or retailer.
Please Point me in the right direction of what SSD to buy.
    Really Appreciate your advice.
    Thanks

Any SSD with a SATA formfactor of 2.5" diameter and a thickness of 9.5 mm will be compatible with your MBP.  Another possibility you might explore is OWC.

SSDs are indeed expensive, but is is not my place, nor anyone else's, to tell you how to spend your money.  To dismiss your query by expressing personal bias is a disservice to you and the purpose of these forums.
I have installed in my MBP a Seagate SSHD (hybrid), 1 TB in capacity.  The cost is a very modest premium compared to a conventional HDD.  Boot and shutdown times are dramatically faster than before but it will not give the same performance as a SSD in processing resource intensive applications.  This is simply to give you an additional alternative to consider.
    Ciao.

  • External monitor problem macbook pro mid 2012

Hi everyone i have a really big problem.
I add a new SSD OWC extreme 6G and a Data Doubler with the original HDD of my macbook pro, i follow all the instructions, i install the latest OSX and install all my apps, till there everything went well and awesome, really fast and i was really happy, but when i connect my external monitor a Samsung SyncMadster T220M my macbook pro freeze but if i disconnet goes back to normal.
I shutdown and restart, connect again and the same.
If i shoutdown the mac and connect the monitor and then turn on, the OS does not start and stay loading.
SSD is the main Hard Drive and the standard HDD is the secondary for DATA
I follow almost all the advice on http://blog.alutam.com/2012/04/01/optimizing-macos-x-lion-for-ssd/ except the advice only for SSD because i have SSD+HDD
also i download the app Chameleon SSD Optimiser and turn on everything
    I really need help!!!
    PLEASE HELP!!!
I USE MY MACBOOK PRO FOR PRESENTATIONS!!!

I had never heard of "Chameleon SSD Optimiser" but I took a look at it after reading your message... I'm not sure that 'turning everything on' was a wise idea... enabling TRIM is fine, of course. I wouldn't think that 'Chameleon' options would have anything to do with your problem, however.
What sort of adapter are you using with your Samsung monitor? I would imagine that there is either a hardware fault with the adapter, or with either your Mac port or the port on the monitor.

  • Can't install Windows 8.1 on Macbook Pro (mid 2012) after installing/removing refit

So I recently installed and removed rEFit on my macbook (I was trying to clone a windows install to the drive to keep it handy, and thought I'd need it to boot from the install), and haven't been able to get Windows 8.1 (x64) to install since -- I keep getting an error message (0x C0000005). I've tried removing all the partitions the installer makes, leaving extra room, etc, but nothing works. I tried to run the EFI updater, but it says it isn't supported by the system (I downloaded the 9,1 version).
    Anyone have any ideas?

Quick update -- I've tried resetting the pram, running the windows startup repair, and running bootrec.exe through the command prompt. No luck with those so far.
Just opened disk utility and saw the screenshot below....could be part of it, but I've deleted the partitions several times...

  • Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!

Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!
The WD My Passport, I purchased back in early December 2013 & I just used it the other day after I updated my Macbook... & of course it says in the online manual it works for Mac Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard but not this new Maverick update. Is there anything I can do?

I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on some Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

It's almost impossible.  The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that.  Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15.  In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.
By the way, I found your answer by searching this forum.  I would suggest using the search function here in the futuere.

  • Can I use my macbook pro mid 2012 as an external display using thunderbolt port

    Hi,
I want to use my macbook pro (mid 2012) screen as an external display for a raspberry pi using a HDMI to Thunderbolt cable, via the thunderbolt port on the macbook pro. Would this be possible? Can the macbook pro's thunder bolt port act as an input and is any additional software required?
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You are referring to Target Display mode. Target Display mode can only be used in 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt, not MacBooks Pro > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Unfortunately, you can't use the MacBook Pro as a display. It doesn't support the monitor mode

  • I can not use CanoScan N670U with my Macbook pro. I download canoscan toolbox 4.1 from Cannon website. It keep saying "the scanner plug-in was not found". Please help

I can not use CanaScan N670U with my Macbook Pro. I download Canoscan toolbox 4.1 from Cannon websit. It still keep saying "The scanner plug-in was not found". Please help

There is a solution (I'm running Snow Leopard on a Core2Duo iMac, but this problem arose when I was running Leopard on a G4 PowerBook too).
    Problem:
You download the OS X driver for the scanner from Canon's site. I already had the CanoScan Toolbox (4.1) stored on an external drive.
You unzip the driver and run the VISE installer. After a search it finds your copy of Photoshop (and maybe even the CanoScan Toolbox), and you click to install on that/those location(s).
You get a couple of error messages, which you click through.
You restart your computer and try to run the scanner but you get an error that the driver is wrong or missing and the process will abort.
    Solution:
BEFORE you restart, and with the installer package still open -
    1. Copy the Into_CFMSupport_Login & Into_CMPrefs folders to
    Applications : Canon Utilities
    Applications : Canoscan Toolbox
and remove the prefix Into_ from each folder
    2. Check whether the installer placed N067U_Library.shlb into the top level (not User level)
    Library : CFMSupport
and if it didn't, move it there yourself
THEN restart, and try again. It worked for me (via Photoshop), but whether it will work for everyone, I don't know.
