Can I use an Mac Mini without a monitor?

I'm using a Mac specifically to develop a mobile app, and the intention was that once everything was set up, I could just TeamViewer in to take control without needing a monitor. This works fine with a monitor plugged in, but when I disconnect the monitor, I stop getting the screen.
So I suppose my question is: if I disconnect the monitor, does it stop sending the screen to TeamViewer? I could kind of understand if this was the case, but I need to know whether I absolutely must have a monitor or if there's a workaround.
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance rendered.

It should work headless, but you might need to use a dummy VGA monitor as described in this blog:

can i use my mac mini for some users at the same time? i mean with their own screen, mouse, and keyboard

If you're asking whether more than one user can use the computer at the same time with multiple displays, the answer is no. Other users can log in over a network with Screen Sharing, but each one will need his own computer (not necessarily a Mac.)

  • Can I use a Mac mini with a VGA monitor?

The Mac mini web page lists an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter as an accessory, but the Mac mini doesn't appear to have a Mini DisplayPort.
The Mac mini also has an HDMI to DVI Adapter included, but would this allow a VGA monitor to be connected via an additional DVI to VGA cable? ie. can the HDMI port provide an analogue signal that a VGA monitor can receive?

Some Mac Minis do have mini-DisplayPorts.  In these two it is between the HDMI and the USB ports:
    (yes Thunderbolt should accept mini-Displayport).
In this one it is between the Mini-DVI and the USB ports:
Only the oldest Intel models would you need a different adapter to VGA
Those you would need a DVI to VGA adapter from Apple such as this one.  Note, DVI to VGA is converting digital to analog, and not very useful, unless your TV has neither DVI nor HDMI.  DVI is much better converted up to HDMI.  And the audio would have to come in separately.  So depending on your display model and make, you may be asking for the wrong adapter.  VGA is fine if all you are going to do is view DVDs on an old TV.  But if you want the ability to use the Dock, menubar, etc..., it is good to have a 1080p TV with built-in HDMI or better.

  • Can I use my mac mini as an apple tv

Hi I have a complete home server setup with one gaming PC and one home server PC, 2 apple TV 3rd Gen and some IP cameras. I would like to know if I can use a Mac Mini as an Apple TV. I feel the features are lacking in the apple TV as I need something with an Internet browser and something that can stream 3d movies to my TV and for the TV to recognize this content. Will it be worth it considering I have a server PC with all my movies, music, pictures and series on it. I don't own a Mac mini yet but I'm thinking of buying one.

I do not realy understand what you want to do. You can AirPlay to Mini with Reflector from the server if the serve support AirPly Mirroring
    A supported Mac
AirPlay Mirroring in OS X takes advantage of the hardware capabilities of recent Macs to deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models support AirPlay Mirroring when using OS X Mountain Lion or later:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
Mac Pro (Late 2013 or newer)
The Apple remote is very limited to what it can do with a Mini

  • Can I use my mac mini as a network drive on my wireless network?

I would like to redeploy my Mac Mini to be a network server drive off of my Airport Extreme router? Is this possible? Is it difficult? How do I do it? Thanks!

Yes, you can use your Mac mini as a network file server. The mini can be connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by either Ethernet or wireless to share files to other network clients.
Please see the following Apple Support article for details on how to configure your Mac for file sharing.

  • Can you use a Mac Mini to share documents between several devices? iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, etc...? We are a home based business with several locations across the state and are having Google Drive issues, looking into Mac Mini options.

We are having Google Drive issues (some files won't sync) and it's causing us trouble with our business communication. Is there any way to use a Mac Mini to share documents between two people in different areas similar to google drive? Would this just be done through iCloud?

If you use Numbers, Pages and KeyNote it si very easy to sync those document among all the Apple devices. You need montain Lion on the Mac  and at least iOS 5 on the mobile devices.
I show those document on my Mac, iPad 4 and iPhone 4S

  • Setting up and using a Mac Mini WITHOUT a screen

I use an IMAC, a macBook 15" and an old G4 Powerbook 15".
I have no external screen available and would prefer to avoid the purchase of an external screen.
I am considering to purchase a mac mini to operate my large Itunes library and store my movies. The mini would be installed close to the Stereo and TV, and would mainly be considered a multimedia storage and handling device rather than a computer.
Is it possible to perform the initial set up without the use of an external screen? Or could I connect it to my portable to perform the setup, and later access the device remotely with the WiFi network.
What would happen after I unbox the device, and start it? Would it automatically appear in my list of network devices, ready to be managed and customised via one of my 3 computers?
    Your advice would be appreciated.
    Patrick

Yeah you're going to need to use a display for the initial setup since sharing is not setup by default so you need to get in there and set that up before you can access it remotely.
Also, the mini was never designed to run "headless" as what you are trying to do is called so you may have to resort to strange hacks like this to keep it happy

  • Can I use a Mac Mini as NAS

I have had apple handheld devices for some time but am making the change to mac computers. We currently have a near dead dell laptop with 500GB of storage. We have used 400GB mostly in photos, videos and iTunes date.
What I would like to do is buy a:
    - MacBook Air with 128GB
    - Mac mini with 1TB of storage
    - Airport Time Capsule
The reason I am buying the mini is so that I can use it as a storage device for all the photos, music and video which can be tapped into and shared by the apple TV, iPads, iPhones and MacBook. I am basically using it as a shared storage device for out media files that will benefit from backups on the Time Capsule
My question to this forum is, will it work well in this capacity? Can I easily move data from my Macbook to the Mac Mini? Can I upload photos from a camera connected to the macbook and safe them on the mini.
    Please advise.
    Many thanks,
    D

  • Can. I use my MAC Mini in conjunction with my iMac?

Can I use my MAC Mini in conjunction with my iMAC? I can not upgrade the OS of the iMAC due to software that I need and Lion does not support it.
If I could bounce back an forth or use the software from the MAC Mini with the iMAC, this would solve my dilemma.

Before I buy a networked drive can I use the airport to connect with an external
USB drive and set both macs  use the  drive as a time machine
Can you hook this up? Sure.
Is is supported by Apple?  No.
Some users report that this seems to work when they try it.
Others....like me....have corruption problems anywhere from a few days to a few months after I set up a test....which I do whenever a new version of firmware or a new operating system becomes available.
We cannot predict your results, so if you decide to try this, and your backups are valuable, you might want to have a secondary backup plan in place as well....just in case.
