Can't use iPhoto with OS X Yosemite.

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite a while back and just tried using iPhoto. It won't work and said my library needed to be prepared. So I went through the steps to update my library, and I still can't use iPhoto. I still tells me it needs to be prepared even though I've done it 2 or 3 times.

Did you also update iPhoto to v9.6 at the App Store? If so:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

How can I use iPhoto with Drobo? Library not copying...

I know from searching this forum that Drobo wasn't suitable for use as a host of the iPhoto Library in the past - but now that Drobo can be formatted as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) drive, I thought the problem was solved.
However, I can't get my Library to copy over successfully from the external drive I've been using up to now, I get the following error:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)
This is confirmed by the fact that the copied library is much smaller than the original: The original is 94.88gb, and the copied file is 55.57gb.
When I open the new library, no thumbnails are visible, and no photos can be opened.
What's the recommended workaround for storing and using iPhoto on a Drobo?
All help much appreciated!

That means there is some file(s) or folder(s) within the library that cannot be copied because the permissions on them are wrong or they are damaged in some way.
The Drobo has nothing to do with it.
Workaround: use a back up app like Chronosync to copy the Library to to disk. Any back up app that makes a straight copy of the Library (rather than increments) will do the job.

iPhoto 9.2.3 is incompatible with MacOS 10.9.3 Mavericks. If you are running Mavericks on your system you need to update iPhoto to 9.5.1. Only, the problem is, that this version is no longer available at the App Store.
The easiest way to get a compatible iPhoto version in that case would be to upgrade to Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10, and then download the most recent iPhoto version from the AppStore, iiPhoto 9.6, like LarryHN suggested.
If you cannot download iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6 post back.

No you won't necessarily lose your photos when upgrading but it's very very unwise not to back up first. Backing up is like using a seat belt in a car. You can drive without one for years and have no issues, but if you do have a problem the outcome will be a lot worse. So, too, with back ups. And upgrading is one of those times when the risks of a problem are higher.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).

Using iPhoto with an existing directory structure on HD full of jpgs

I'm using iPhoto 6. I recently moved 7,000+ photos (jpgs) off my PC onto my new Mac harddrive. They are organized into dozens of folders and subfolders. How can I use iPhoto to work with the pics within this directory structure? I tried dragging and importing several different ways, but it never preserves my extensive directory structure (just puts them all together into one big pile). I set it not to make a copy when importing. I just want iPhoto to "point" to my existing directory structure, so I can see my folders and subfolders on the left side (and from there I'll create albums and pages stuff). Thanks, Robin

Welcome to the discussions.
First, you have to consider that iPhoto organizes differently from what you are used to doing. It is designed to allow you to do your organizing from within iPhoto, using film rolls and albums. That way, you do not have to be concerned with how and where iPhoto stores the actual photos.
If you want to keep the same type of organization that you have now, you can import the photos one folder at a time, so that iPhoto puts each folder into a separate film roll. You can change the date on import, since iPhoto will give the roll the date of import, not the date of the photo.
To get the subfolders into folders, use the album creation feature in the Source pane and create the albums and folders to suit your organizational needs and drag the photos into the appropriate locations. One of the great features of iPhoto's album function is that you can have a photo in more than one album.

I can't use iPhoto on my new MacMini. Why?

I can't use iPhoto on my new MacMini. I transferred my photo library from my old Mac tower's iPhoto library. The photos are in there - I can find them in the photo library - but I can't get them into iPhoto - or even open iPhoto. What happens is a message: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." Then, when I choose "Upgrade", I get : "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable." It goes on to tell me to Quit iPhoto, Reopen while keeping Option & Comand keys pressed." Did that over and over. Nothing changes. It also says: "Try restoring our photo library from back up" but I don't know what that means. Help.
Note: My transferred photos are in there via: Finder / Judy / Library / iPhoto Library. But I can't work with them, e.g. edit, in iPhoto or access them any other way than one at a time in that library... not exactly what I want or need.

I did everything you suggested and it seemed to be a repeat of everything I did yesterday. Going through "Macintosh HD" just got me to the same place I was in yesterday, going through Finder to 'Judy' to 'Library' to 'iPhoto Library'. There just isn't anything there that looks like what you describe: 'Permissions' or 'Rights & Priveges'. From everything I see when I monkey around in my 'User' folder, there are no restrictions on anything.
BDAqua is indicating one of the standard paths/locations for the iPhoto Library:
Macintosh HD -> Users -> Judy -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library
At least that's where mine was on Snow Leopard and is on Lion. The location you've indicated, isn't standard:
Macintosh HD -> Judy -> Library -> iPhoto Library
When you get to "iPhoto Library",
- select/hightlight it
- Then click cmd-I (or under the "File" menu, select "Get Info")
- At the very bottom of the "Info" window you should "Sharing and Permissions" -- that's what BDAqua is asking about.

There are a couple of apps that do video calls on 3g. One in particuplar called tango. The quality is not very good on 3g, but that is pretty much what you should expect. Both parties need the app installed. Works on phones, and the pad.

Thank you for the update. I recommend verifying that you are signed in with the same Apple ID associated with or used to purchase iPhoto on the App Store under the Store menu.
If you are signed in with an alternate Apple ID, I recommend signing out of the App Store, signing back in with the correct Apple ID, and then trying the update again:
Sign out
Choose Store > Sign Out.
Sign in using an Apple ID
Choose Store > Sign In, or click Sign In in the Quick Links section. The Quick Links section is located in the right part of the window shown when you click Featured, Top Charts, or Categories in the toolbar.
Enter your Apple ID and password, and then click Sign In.
