Can I use migration assistant from a mac with leopard to a mac with tiger?

My old mac was upgraded to leopard, (don't ask me why), and I just got a new mac with tiger, although I ordered leopard up to date. Can I use migration assistant to move stuff from the old mac with leopard to the new mac with tiger, or do I have to wait until I get the copy of leopard? Plus, if I move files over now- like through email and/or network connection, and then when I get leopard and archive and install, what happens to my files?

That is correct. You'll need either an ethernet cable or a firwire cable and a firewire to thunderbolt adapter to connect the two macs together. Here's info on Migration/Setup assistant

  • Can u use Migration assistant from 10.5.8 to 10.7.2?

My new MacPro is OS X 10.7.2 and my old one is 10.5.8.   Migration assistant does not work either from eithernet hookup or Firewire 800.   Is there a software patch or update for either box to allow migration from Old OsX 10.5.8 to 10.7.2?

Yes, but you must use Migration Assistant from the new computer and boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.

  • HT4796 can i use migration assistant from one windows laptop to another

I need to set up iTunes on a new laptop but I don't know how to do it. Migration assistant seems to be only from a windows p.c. to a mac laptop. I want to transfer all my music from old (vista) to new (7). Can I do this?

No.  Migration Assistant only works when using OS X on one of the computers.  You would have to ask Microsoft Support.
    Hope this helps

  • Can I use Migration Assistant from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion?

I've done a clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.1 - a 'test' installation on a new clean partition on my main HD. It boots fine and runs fine. But Mountain Lion's Migration Assistant does not recognise my external HDD which contains a bootable clone (CCC) of my entire SL installation (my present computer). The little progress clock icon just keeps going round and round and round...
I want to migrate my account files, settings, bookmarks etc etc from SL to Mountian Lion but I'm stumped because of ML not recognising my SL installation.
Plus, I'm considering buying a new MBP Retina in near future and don't want to be caught out with this problem with that either.
Because this is my only computer, and it holds all my business, I can't afford anything but a seamless migration without problem-down-time (which I had unbearbly with Lion and reverted to SL almost immediately as a result).
Thank you in advance for any advice offered.

To reinstall iPhoto you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the:
    HD/Library/Receipts folder (10.5 and earlier)
    or from the /var/db/receipts/  folder (10.6) .
or from the /private/var/db/receipts folder (10.7 or later)
Then install iPhoto from the source it came from originally, i.e. the disks that came with your Mac, an iLife disk or the App Store if your Mac came with Lion or Mt. Lion preinstalled.

  • Can I use Migration Assistant to Copy files from one mac to another, but not delete the original files off of the original Mac?

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro Retina, and I have an old Macbook Pro w/o Retina and wish to use migration assistant. I still want to use the older Macbook Pro and keep all the files on it, but copy them and also put them on my new Macbook. What I'm trying to say is, can I use migration assistant to move files to a new Mac, while keeping the files on the old computer?

You can omit some broad categories, but you can't pick and choose individual items.
See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion (preferred method), or the similar Using Migration Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details.

  • How to use Migration Assistant from OS 10.7.5 mac to new mac Maverick?

Got a new imac.  I'm trying to use Migration assistant from my non-Maverick imac to the new one.  I'm told that I have to update my former mac, but it's too old to update to Maverick.
So, how can I use Migration Assitant to transfer files?
    Thank you.

The easiest method is to use the Time Machine backup from your old computer and connect it to the new machine. Then launch Migration Assistant on the new machine and use the TM backup HD to migrate to the new machine. DO NOT do this wirelessly, your profile indicates you have a Time Capsule, if you use that for your TM backup then connect it via eithernet to  your new iMac to do the migration.

  • Can I use Migration Assistant to install Tiger on my old Mac?

I am about to buy a MacBook that will, of course, come with Tiger and I will use Migration Assistant to bring my files over from my Powermac G5 which has just Panther installed. Since I am keeping both machines, can I use Migration Assistant to migrate the Tiger OS over to my Powermac? And can I do the same with the newer versions of software that will come with the MacBook (iLife etc.)?
    Dual 2GHz Powermac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The Migration Assistant can only transfer data to a computer which already has the Migration Assistant installed, and it will not transfer the whole Mac OS X setup in any configuration. Furthermore, the version of Mac OS X which comes with a MacBook is not compatible with your Power Mac G5. If you want Tiger on your older computer, you need to purchase a new copy.

Suggest you try the password for the Macbook, not the previous one.

    using migration assistant is problematic.
at this point yes, you should uninstall everything migrated, clean and then reinstall properly using the installation files.

  • Can I use Migration Assistant as a tool to move my iphoto library back and forth from my imac to my MacBook Pro?

I purchased a macbook pro so I can work on my iphoto projects when out of the house. Instead of buying an external and having my iphoto library on that, would I be able to use Migration Assistant to update the iphoto library from macbook pro to imac and imac to macbook pro -- depending on which machine i am using at the time?

    Do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Can I do a clean install of 10.5 and use migration assistant from backup ?

I want to install OS 10.5 on to my Macbook. If I do a clean install rather than an archive and install can I then use migration assistant to transfer my accounts and emails from the cloned Superduper backup I have made on an external drive?
Or is Archive and Install better?

I think 99.9% of the people know what you want to do by "clean" (ie, erase or reformat) and that insures there aren't any file or directory problems when you start, that the new OS is all that will be taking up space. Clean has two connotations: Windows or OS 9. There are lots of words that are "no longer used" but everyone knows what "initialize" or reformat means and does.
If you said, "Scratch that" you could mean, "scratch that idea" even though you can't actually scratch anything. And the idea isn't in stone (scratch out) or written with a pencil where you could erase the word or line. Or draw a line through words to "scratch out the line." There can be multiple meanings. Some languages have 5 words for "blue" to denote different shades of blue, and meaning.
Your drive is 60GB which is on the small side so that is one more reason to reformat.
And because installers will create and delete a lot of files, and scatter around, I would do another SD backup (and leave your old backup as is) so you have a copy of Leopard you can boot from and that would be just Apple OS (maybe after applying the 900MB of updates required to get to 10.5.4+).

  • HT204350 Can I use Migration Assistant to transfer data from macbook running 10.7.5 To a macbook air running Mavericks? On first attempt destination machine says that os versions are not compatible for Migration Assistant.

I am trying to transfer contents from old macbook running os 10.7.5 to a macbook air running os 10.9.1 using migration assistant but the destination macobook air says that migration cannot proceed (yellow triangle) because the os on the macbook is not up to date (assuming that eans 10.9.1).  However old macbook cannot be updated to 10.9.1.
Can anyone suggest a way around this please?

  • HT4889 Can I use Migration Assistant to update iTunes (only) from my optical drive Mount Lion computer to my Maverick OS computer?

Already migrated my data, settings, etc. to the new Maverick OS iMac. Then realized I had lots of CDs that I hadn't burned into iTunes, which I can do only on my old Mountain Lion iMac. Can I just choose "Data" if I invoke Migration Assistant? Will it move only the new stuff, which would be the new iTune playlist library? Don't want to reload the entire computer again!

What you should be able to do is simply copy everything that's in the home folder under iTunes from the old computer to the same spot on the new one - just drag and drop. That should bring over all your music & your playlists. You shouldn't have to use Migration Assistant for that.
I did that during one of my many moves from one computer to another, but I have not tried recently. It won't hurt to give it a try.

  • Downgrade from server can't use Migration Assistant

I have leopard server installed on one internal hard drive.
I want to run non-server mountain lion and migrate all my info from my server version of leopard.
I am having a problem with Migration Assistant not recognizing the installed leopard server os on either an internal drive or a cloned external drive.
Here's what I've done so far.
    1) installed mountain lion (non-server) on a second intenral hard drive.
    2) made a bootable clone of the leopard server os onto an external drive.
    3) try to run migration assistant from the Mountain Lion drive asking it to migrate data from an external disk.
When I run Migration Assistant it never finds any other drives (internal or external).  I am wondering if a non server install will simply not interact with a server install.
I'm at my wits end.  How do I get all my apps and settings migrated over to the fresh Mountain Lion drive?
    thanks.

OK, I just noticed that Bounce Back did not copy my System folder. I put a system folder on the drive, and Migration Assistant worked just fine now.
